Welcome to Epica. Simone and the band will blow your mind.
Rivers is one of their more recent ballads. If you liked it you should check also these -
Epica - Once Upon a Nightmare - Omega Alive
Epica - Chasing the Dragon - Retrospect live
Epica - Tides of Time - album version
Epica - In All Conscience
While they have such amazing ballads, keep in mind they’re generally considered as one of the heaviest bands in the Symphonic Metal scene. Their diversity ranges from soft to very hard and all in between, including acoustic versions of their songs and long progressive masterpieces.
And the lyrics.. and the showmanship.. everything is top notch.
These recommendations are spot on!
@@emirridane2608 thanks! Heard them before?

Hi NittPicc, the singer's name is Simone Simons, she is a trained Suprano, Simone and Floor (both Dutch) have been close friends for a very long time, and have sung together many times, here is one example, Simone and Floor singing Opera together,
EPICA - Stabat Mater Dolorosa w/Floor Jansen (Retrospect 10th Anniversary DVD I)
Tides of Time is another song that will grab you in the same way.
Simone is my favorite singer-she’s just such a master of her instrument and for me strikes the perfect balance between contemporary and classical style. And the ease with which she moves between them, even in the same phrase, is just incredible! Epica as well is just one of my all-time favorite bands; several members have music degrees and their composition work is insane, and when they perform live they always look like they’re having SO much fun.
Highly recommend checking out Unleashed or Code of Life from this same show-Live at the AFAS Live. They also have a great online concert they did during lockdown called Omega Alive, and a few great ones to check out from that are The Skeleton Key, Cry for the Moon, and Victims of Contingency.
So much beauty... it hurts
Amen to that.
She sings opera with Floor, look up Stabat Mater Dolorosa from the Retrospect show. Also, she sang Ombra Fai Fu on Epica’s Classical Conspiracy live CD, although there is no official video of that, just a low res fan video with the original CD audio, still magical though.

Epica formed in the early 2000's, as a symphonic metal band from the Netherlands. Singer Simone Simons reportedly had started studying pop music singing in school, but changed to classical singing after hearing Nightwish's 'Oceanborn' album. She was still a teenager when the band formed. I became a fan of the band in about 2007, and I got to hear them live at a small local venue in 2014. Simone also did guest vocals on a couple of Kamelot songs in 2005, and eventually married Kamelot's keyboardist, Oliver Palotai. Simone is good friends with Floor Jansen.
Apocalyptica, from Finland, started off with an album of Metallica covers on 4 cellos, in 1996. They started making their own songs, added a drummer, dropped to 3 cellos, and brought in guest vocalists from other bands on some songs, like Corey Taylor, Till Lindemann, Cristina Scabbia, and others.
My appreciation for Simone and Epica has only grown over the years. Simone, like Floor Jansen of Nightwish, have spent decades honing their craft, and damn...does it show. The tools in their arsenal that they can seemingly reach into and grab at any time means their performances are almost always captivating.
Simone is flawless in every aspect! 🌀🌀🌀😍😍😍
I was there... 5 rows from the podium. Still tear up hearing this.
In september we will see them live afain with the Orchestra
Great heartfelt reaction. Epica are just awesome.
There is another version of this song from their Omega Alive livestream, recorded during lockdown, where Simone sings it ‘a cappella’ with just a choir for backing, it is just as stunning. It is also immediately followed by another Ballad, Once Upon a Nightmare.
If you want to see the ultra heavy side of Epica, I would suggest The Essence of Silence official live video.
I agree.
The Essence of Silence is a great song to do next.
Short
Heavy with grunts
And Simone operatic as well
You have rected to "Rivers" and Nightwish "Ghost Love Score," now it's time for "Kingdom of Heaven part 1" (another side of Epica: the heavier one) and "Sancta Terra" from Retrospect Epica's 10th anniversary (Simone and Floor duet with orchestra).
adding links Kingdom of Heaven pt.1: ruclips.net/video/PF56D9mrlck/видео.htmlsi=mraFUlyVUiZ1sXUX since they didn't specify a version, this is the one I chose. Sancta Terra- Retrospect: ruclips.net/video/cx22Yuj2nzg/видео.htmlsi=q1eJSc4wOeccvG2T

I haven't read all the 100+ comments but I'm sure there are a lot of good suggestions for Epica.
I'll just mention that there is another version of this same song that will also impress you as a music educator: A live a capella version with just a choir! Epica had a pandemic project called "Omega Alive", which was a "concert without an audience" -- a bunch of their songs, performed live in a studio with a full stage performance, but only performing to the cameras. It was then later streamed as a concert, and eventually also got released on DVD/bluray/etc. During that show, they did that a capella version of "Rivers". Look for it, it's amazing.
Replying to myself to add about Simone Simons and classical music: She hasn't done very many recordings of that, but in 2009 Epica did a special show in Hungary with a symphony orchestra and choir, and she did two there: "Ombra Mai Fu" by Händel (from the opera "Serse" aka "Xerxes") and "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" by Pergolesi (with a much older libretto), the latter done as a duet with the lead soprano from the choir. The concert was not professionally filmed, but the audio was recorded and this was released as the album "The Classical Conspiracy".
In 2013, on Epica's 10th anniversary, they again did a special concert with a symphony orchestra and choir (actually the same ones), and reprised "Stabat Mater Dolorosa", this time with Floor Jansen replacing the choir's lead soprano.
* "Ombra Mai Fu" -- this is a fan-filmed (several mobile phones around the audience) and fan-cut video that uses the official audio from the "Classical Conspiracy" CD, not great to watch but great to listen to: ruclips.net/video/OidxfaRSJLg/видео.html
* "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" from 2009: same caveat as above, fan-filmed and fan-cut, official audio: ruclips.net/video/gJpYGkGxgBk/видео.html
* "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" form 2013: ruclips.net/video/nhtOORYTGx8/видео.html
There are other things Simone has done that are not strictly classical, but let's say classical-adjacent, such as well-known music from musicals and movies. Here are some:
* "Memory" from Cats, performed in 2004 when she was just 19 years. This was for a TV show in Netherlands where bands got invited to film a special recording with live musicians. This later got released on DVD/blu-ray/etc as "We will take you with us". They mostly did Epica material, but threw in this one as well: ruclips.net/video/85tBXrGsN78/видео.html
* "Sally's Song" from "A nightmare before Christmas", performed on Halloween during a concert in Toronto, fan-filmed and fan-cut video so don't expect great quality: ruclips.net/video/fd9aovYpyS0/видео.html
* "Part of your World" from "The Little Mermaid": ruclips.net/video/aau6nI04G9k/видео.html
Have you seen her interview with The Charismatic Voice? She talks about her love of old Disney music there.
What a nice reaction! Welcome to EPICA universe! YOU'VE GOT WORK TO DO! Cheers from Greece!❤
best band ever! 🤘😎🤘
Simone is one of the few artists i can listen to all day without getting tired. She's the best
Welcome to the symphonic splendor of Epica! Symphonic METAL, and I mean often times very heavy and dark but the lyrics of many of their songs are so meaningful. A couple salient differences between Epica and Nightwish is that Epica incorporates a lot of harsh vocals from Mark Jansen the founder. He is “the beast” to her “beauty”. So and they’re heavier music there’s a lot of harsh vocals sometimes from some of the other guys backing up. Another difference in Epica from Nightwish is they are a big advocate and embracing collaboration with many other fantastic artists and also some performances with orchestra and choir live which they’re doing 4 major orchestral with choirs shows later this year. In my opinion they are the ultimate in symphonic metal done right and I’m thankful to many good symphonic metal bands like Therion, Nightwish, visions of Atlantis, within temptation etc. that were my gateway up to the high bar of Epica. Simone has a very pristine and highly controlled voice and along with Tommy Karevick of Kamelot probably the most perfect pitch you’ll ever find. Great reaction and I just sub to your channel!

5:57 when the music is just too good
IMHO - three of the greatest female voices of our time all come from the Netherlands - Simone Simons , Floor Jansen and Anneke van Giersbergen . All unique - all beautiful - all wonderful ! ❤
Great reaction Nitt Picc! That's the same way I felt first time seeing/hearing this. I never knew there could be such beautiful music created. Still brings me to tears after dozens of listens. I'm forever thankful to You Tube reaction channels, which got me into this whole Symph Metal genre just a year ago...never knew how empty my musical world was until I was first introduced to Nightwish and the not-from-this-world vocalist Floor Jansen (my personal favorite, fwiw). And then along came Epica and this dear siren named Simone Simons....OMG! This band...wow! Love them!!!!!! They just hit different, and I'm here for it! Wish I lived in Europe so that I could reasonably have a shot to see their Amsterdam show in Sep with the full orchestra. Bucket list moment for me, but alas, it's not going to happen. Take good care! 😊🤘✌💙
Super cool to see someone have a similar reaction to this song as I have, but can also put into words the feelings I got from it! Thanks so much!
Omg, how you have not disappointed me with your reaction. I approve being a subscriber to your channel. You have an exceptional and sensitive hearing combined with a warm personality, love it love it love it. Ty 😘❤️
............no words........... just blown away...............................................
Epica is the band I am most excited for you to see more. They have a special place in my heart. Their music is top notch. Lyrics are amazing and uplifting. I would say Chasing the Dragon Retrospect Live or Kingdom of Heaven 3 Omega Alive would be 2 of my first suggestions, but you can't go wrong with anything they have done. There is also Stabat Mater sung with Floor that may be good for you to hear a more classical sound. Happy Listening!

By the way if you want to hear more Apocalyptica they have a tremendous discography but a treat to having them with queen Simone again is her appearing with them this time in their gorgeous ballad with beautiful lyrics titled Rise Again. I would highly recommend their live performance from a year or two ago recorded in London. It is beauty times 10!
Heavy Metal was never a boring Music
hell ya. music without rules or limits
Hi NittPicc, welcome to the wonderful world of EPICA, you just discovered one of the worlds greatest top tier bands, here is another song from the same show, this is more like their Symphonic Metal sound 🙃
EPICA - Unleashed (Live At The AFAS Live)
Netherlands and Finland, the deadly combo. :o)
Epica has some of the most beautiful ballads you'll ever hear. They are often a much heavier band than Nightwish. My favorite ballad is Once Upon a Nightmare from their Omega Alive virtual concert.
Simone Simons' singing range is amazing! Aside from her work with Epica, she has also appeared in at least one of Ayreon's projects (who coincidentally she teamed up with for her debut solo album)...
Next up I would suggest ‘Once upon a nightmare’ from the Omega Alive concert for more amazing vocals from Simone (she has such amazing control across a huge range) and a little more prominence for the other band members too. It’s amazing but then again most of their songs are!
I can't not crying listening to this song, truly. 😭
Thank you so much for your very positive reaction to my favorite band. 🙏🤘
My favorite singer Simone Simons. Love the band Epica. You have alot of great songs from this band. And yes, Operetic is not uncommon in their songs.
Epica - code of life (live at AFAS) is a good one.
Apocalyptica - Rise Again (FT Simone Simones). Another beautiful song with this singer. Might be some copyright problems with that band 😒.
there's a pole on David Heretic's youtube channel in the community my request is about to just lose to king lizzard would like to win grate on epica vote! i typy this to random peaple just to win hope you are oke with it haha
I have heard this song at least a 100 times and it stil gets me. especially her belting voice wich is getting bettter and better over the years. if there is a band wich is growing with every year they excist, it will be Epica. keep on digging in their music.
I knew you'd love Epica and Simone! You've really got to hear the band properly now. No shade to this one, it's wonderful, but you've got to hear the full metal experience and the addition of Mark Jansen's harsh vocals. :)
You might also like to look up some of Simone's guest work with Kamelot. You'd probably like them a lot as well, and Tommy Karevik (vocalist from 2012 on) is one of my favourite male metal singers.
Hi NittPicc, EPICA made a series of studio vlogs while making their latest album 'Omega'
This episode is all about the making this song 'Rivers'
EPICA - Behind the music OMEGA (Part 13) (Official Vlog)
Hello Lady Nittpicc! I've been a part of your channel since your reaction to "Nightwish" and congratulate you on both the reactions of "Nightwish" and "Epica"! Great job! Thank you very much for that! As you can tell from my nickname, my heart beats for both groups! I recommend "Sancta Terra" from Retrospect 10th anniversary (Simone and Floor duet with orchestra) and your heart will melt. Good luck and success and health to you and great growth for your channel. Kind regards from a German guy!

If you want more Simone , Apocalyptica and tears watch live version of song Rise Again from London
It’s about toxic relationships and domestic violence
A song of strength , beauty and overcoming … it’s breathtaking
I concur

Apocalyptica is a finnish metal band who, instead of electric guitars and bass, use cellos. Their first album was an instrumental Metallica tribute album, where they covered some Metallica songs, on cello. Since then they have released quite a few original albums, and added drums and guest vocalists/lyrics on some songs. Epica is a symphonic metal band from The Netherlands, and as the name implies, epic. The vocalist's name is Simone Simons, she and Floor are good friends. Epica's song Sancta Terra featuring Floor is a must watch and listen.
If you want some Apocalyptica I'd suggest the song "Rise Again"" ft Simone Simons :) Great reaction, thank you!!!!

Enjoyed your reaction! Epica is one of the best symphonic metal bands and IMO a close second to Nightwish. Depending on my mood, sometimes my favorite. This is one of their many beautiful ballads. Their are so many great versions of this song including the original music video, the live one shot from Chile, and the acapella version from their Omega Alive pandemic livestream. My current favorite ballad of their's is Once Upon a Nightmare from Omega Alive and with a close second is Tides of Time. Studio version is the way to go although their is a beautiful acoustic version of the song from Pinkpop in 2010. Metalwish's remastered video of the whole 4 song set is the way to go.
Epica can also go much harder then Nightwish. I find them to be more symphonic, heavier, and darker musically. They also make extensive use of choir's which I love. Unleashed or Design Your Universe from their 10th anniversary Retrospect concert are good videos to get their more typical sound. Their best song/performance IMO is Kingdom of Heaven Part 3 from the Omega Alive show. A true masterpiece. For something that goes hard try Essence of Silence live from Brussels. Another one of my favorites is Sirens- of Blood and Water. The music video is stunning and you get not only Simone's beautiful voice but also Charlotte Wessels (ex Delain) and Merkur (Danish Black metal/Nordic folk singer). If you get Disney princess vibes from Simone you are not wrong. She did a cover of Part of Your World from Little Mermaid on her YT channel during the pandemic. ruclips.net/video/aau6nI04G9k/видео.htmlsi=G6JCg3iVBdGPZ_A0. Simone has been a spokesperson for L'Oreal in Europe and has website called Smoonstyle where she explores her twin passion of beauty and photography. She often posts videos of her stage makeup for concerts on her Instagram.
Don't know a lot of Apocalyptica but concur on Rise Again. It is another song where Simone's voice is so pretty and the cello's are very prominent. Both the music video and the live performance from London are fantastic.
As a flautist I think you would love the song Amazing Flight from the Dutch project Ayreon. Ayreon's music is composed by Arjen Lucassen and they are progressive rock/metal operas. The live performance of Amazing Flight from The Electric Castle and Other Tales features a great flute solo by Thijs van Leer.
Hard to believe she’s the lead singer of a metal band and not a Disney princess, right? 😂 She did once do a cover of Part of Your World tho and it was as fitting as you can imagine. The woman *literally* looks like real-life Ariel.
I love this performance of Rivers.
I also concur with all the other suggestions for Epica's 10th anniversay show with full orchestra and choir. Simone and Floor classically duet in Latin with only the Orchestra for the centuries old hymn Sabat Mater Dolorosa(metal audience goes silent in awe), and duet with everyone for the second song.
Apocalyptica with Nina Haagen, doing the Rammstein cover Seeman, is an absolute triumph.
I concur❤
great reaction. what might interest you is a piece she sang on their 10-year anniversary concert: a duet with Floor of Pergolesi's Stabat mater dolorosa. Something tells me you will enjoy that
I here Epica for 20years Simone is one of the best sopranos in Metall 🤘
Simone, Simone, Simone........you ANGEL!!!
Oooh definitely check out Apocalyptica. I adore their song Rise. You could do a twofa and check out Rise, and then Rise Again (re-imagined collaboration they did with Simone). They are glorious.
Both are on RUclips.
Simone and Floor played the flute in their youth😊. And you will find different flutes/windinstruments in a lot of songs by Nightwish
This makes me EXTREMELY happy!!! 🥰🥰🥰
Love ur reaction ❤ Epica is an awesome band, one of the best out there, Simone is a very talented and gorgeous singer I'm sure you'd enjoy their music, you should check:
- Once Upon a nightmare (Omega Alive)
- Tides of Time
- Stabat Mater Dolorosa ft Floor Jansen (live at Retrospect)
- Sancta Terra ft Floor Jansen (live at Retrospect)
The terrifyingly beautiful Simone has had our hearts and souls for some time now. She is divine.
Addendum: you must listen to the van Giersbergen women, Anneke and Dianne. You will be utterly blown away. They are not sisters, save for sisters in music. Dianne's spinto soprano in particular will cause your soul to leave your body. Anneke is for all intents and purposes a founder and mentor of the pantheon of goddess Dutch symphonic metal singers. She is loved by Floor, Simone and Dianne alike.
Dianne is in my top 3 with Simone and Floor.
some Simone / floor in one song

I concur, you saved me the the trouble of posting it 😅

@@Columbasta don't get me wrong.. I' like Nightwish as well.
Even before Floor joined them.
But the Nightwish fans ask to react on Sancta Terra and Sabat Mater Delorosa only because Floor sings too in those songs. Rather see they ask to react on real Epica songs
Nice reaction. Listen and react to EPICA `Tides of Time and Once upon a nightmare and Design your universe. If you want to hear Simone of Epica sing opera listen and react to "Stabat mater dolorosa". Together with Floor Jansen from Nightwish.

EPICA and Nightwish have hundreds of songs with this quality of music. Different, but beautiful…. And Simone & Floor are close friends…
LOL, good point. Simone's voice is acoustic honey so yes, probably you would get healed.
I highly recommend "Code of Life" (from the same concert), or "Tides of Time" if you feel like checking out another stunningly beautiful ballad. For something more classical/opera there's a live "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" performance with none other than Floor Jansen of Nightwish
Simone Simons so AMAZING ! MY FAVORITE SINGER ❤
First time viewer.. good reaction!
Rather than gush over Simon's vocals, just a bit about Apocalyptica...
They are an acoustic band without a dedicated vocalist. Rather, they write their own music and perform with with guest singers from multiple genres (mostly rock/metal) They have performed with more professionals than I can count, and everything they touch turns to gold. Simply youtube them and you will be shocked. It's all great!
Great reaction! It's nice to see a reactor paying real attention to what's happening in the music and with the voices. Simone has stolen many hearts with her voice. Please react to “Code of Life” and “Unleashed” from AFAS live. You might be impressed ;)
Bonus track: “Once Upon a Nightmare” (Omega Alive)
Cheers!
Someone slow the bus down! It has been ten years already since I saw Apocalyptica, here in Toronto.
Otra hermosa balada de Epica es Tides of time, que de hecho es mi favorita
NittPicc, I agree with you - this was incredibly beautiful. But Simone, of Epica, was classically trained and you may of heard of her roommate (if I remember correctly) Floor Jensen (of Nightwish). Together they did a wonderful concert with full orchestra called Epica -Sancta Terra ruclips.net/video/cx22Yuj2nzg/видео.htmlsi=0D6u-wDTVAjLL1pD. I’m sure that you will enjoy this- can’t guarantee any cures though.
@s1mperadicator13 And have never been roommates. I think people think that because there is a video of them back in Floor's pre Nightwish days rehearsing to sing Sweet Curse with Floor's band Revamp for the Metal Female Voices Festival. Just the two of them in someone's living room goofy around and having fun.
Sorry to say but this urban legend will never die they were never roommates and her vocal training came from her schooling and also Amanda Sommerville
Don't know also much about Apocalyptica, but they recently did a nice collab with another of my favorite singers, so check out this one :
Apocalyptica feat. Elize Ryd of Amaranthe - What We're Up Against (Official Video)

What I love about Apocalyptica is how much their sound differs for their original song depending on the guest vocalist they have, also Apocalyptica has a song with Simone called Rise Again. I actually was at this concert and Apocalyptica was so much fun they played Nothing Else Matters and you could hear the older people in the audience sing the lyrics. They also did play Rise Again but sadly Simone did not sing with them, I think the song was too new because Apocalyptica did release a live video of Rise Again with Simone. Just from later in the tour.
😊❤
How would you like to listen to Floor Jansen of Nightwish and Simone Simons of Epica singing together? Spoiler Alert: they used to be roommates. Epica's 10th anniversary concert with a full orchestra: "Sancta Terra" and "Stabat Mater Dolorosa". As a classical musician I'm sure you've heard of the later: a 13th century prayer set to 18th century Baroque music by Pergolesi, only this time sung in front of a 21st century metal audience by two metal queens. Despite being a soprano, Floor sings the alto role.
OK this urban legend is constantly propagated by the Nightwish crowd it is absolutely false Simone was never a roommate with her. Floor also was never a vocal coach to Simone… Simone went to two vocal academies and the classical trained crossover to metal Amanda Somerville was also some of her vocal coach no one else please stop these rumors good grief
Simone start her singing by Epica with 17years now she is 39years and one of the best soprano in Metall ❤️
Hi I'm from East London England
If you want to hear Simone sing a classical composition there's no better than Giovanini Battista Pergolesi's 1st movement of Stabat Mata.
In Epica's Retrospect 10th anniversary concert, where Floor Jansen of Nightwish joins, Epica and sings with Simone. Stabat Mata dolorosa. Is a must. Great video reaction.
It's surprising that some people still write in the comments that Simone's singing is absolutely emotionless and lifeless, and I sincerely don't understand why these people themselves are so deaf or emotionless if this is what they call lifeless singing. Your reaction proves otherwise.

How about some Apocalyptica feat Simone Simons 😉
If you want to try something classic check out Stargazer by Rainbow. In particular the vocalist Ronnie James Dio is a legend, and the guitarist Ritchie Blackmore is insane. He actually composes all of his guitar playing on a cello and his slides are out of this world.
Try Apocalyptica ft. Simone Simons - "Rise Again" (Live in London) ruclips.net/video/dCplcb8NaJA/видео.htmlsi=i_D5n5pn43E0DhMb
Apocalyptica is a metal band from Finland. Apocalyptica started with four cellos - of which there are now three left - played by Paavo Lötjönen, Eicca Toppinen and Perttu Kivilaakso and with Mikko Sirén on the drums.
At first they mainly played covers of Metallica for fun. After their successful first album Plays Metallica by four cellos a second album quickly followed: Inquisition symphony. On this album they play covers of Metallica as well as covers of Sepultura, Slayer, Pantera and Faith No More. The band also gave an introduction to their own work in this album. In the meantime they have released many albums. Their 10th is Apocalyptica Plays Metallica Vol. 2 and they are touring Europe this year. ruclips.net/channel/UCru9ErWdSgEG8VO8xtBHFuQ
