It's not just that, every note he plays HAS to be there. With nearly all guitar solos there's some point where you think "Now you're just showing off". Not so with Gilmour. Changing anything in his solos would be like touching up the Mona Lisa with a marker. I have yet to hear a Pink Floyd cover that's an actual improvement over the original and I doubt I ever will.

This song completely captures the band's history, what they all went through in their youth, starting from Syd Barret till the time Roger left the band. This album is almost like a last breath of the band, reminiscing their past, as it being their last studio album, with High Hopes being the last song of the album, and their final words being "The endless river, forever and ever". The thought put behind their music is deeper than anything I've ever heard. The greatest band ever!

The album "The Division Bell", is largely about (non-) communication and especially about the mentality where simple words can often solve many problems in life.
The Division Bell is the name of a bell that rings at the Palace of Westminster, Houses of Parliament (London, UK).
The bell indicates to parliamentarians that the debates will resume, or that these debates are coming to an end, that it's time to move on to the final vote.
To put this song in context, you could try: Pink Floyd - Keep Talking (PULSE Restored & Re-Edited).
Here's a sample of what you might hear in Keep Talking: "Why won't you talk to me? - You never talk to me - What are you thinking?"

The sounds at the begining are the sounds of the English countryside which transports me back to when I was a kid.
    Quite fitting for the song.
A couple of decades back I was suffering from a form of depression, I hadn't felt anything for what felt like months and thought I was dead inside.
One summers day driving home from work this song came on the CD player and when I got to the slide guitar solo at the end I felt for the first time in what felt like a long time and all my emotions came out all at once.
I had to pull over because I was crying so much and couldn't drive.
Once I composed myself the rest of the drive home I felt lighter and clearer than I had in weeks and the depression never came back (it's flittered round the edges on occasions but never settled since.)
It was the most amazing catharsis I've ever felt.
This song still takes me back to a childhood in the country with church bells ringing out from villages on a Sunday, endless summers, bees and simpler times.
    Music is amazing!

I was only 17 years old and it was an unforgettable experience. It was incredibly emotional, and even today I am moved listening to them, just as I was moved that day at the concert. Groups like them should be eternal; they would never have to grow old to continue writing songs, or rather, poems. 'High Hopes' is a composition rich in poetic images and symbolism. Released on the album 'The Division Bell' in 1994, the song is often interpreted as a reflection on the past, the loss of innocence and the progressive passage of time. The lyrics, written by guitarist David Gilmour and his wife, Polly Samson, evoke a sense of longing for an idyllic time and place, possibly the band members' youth and the early days of their musical career.
The expression 'world of magnets and miracles' can be seen as a metaphor for the fascination and enchantment of childhood, where everything seems possible and the world is full of wonders. The song also mentions 'the long road' and 'the boardwalk', indicating a journey that the band members have traveled together, and questions whether there is still a common meeting point, 'by the cut', changing changes in relationships and the dynamics of the group.
The song's chorus, with its repetitions of 'The grass was greener, The light was brighter', highlights the human tendency to idealize the past, seeing it as a time of greater vivacity and happiness. The song ends with the image of an 'endless river', perhaps symbolizing the continuity of life and the eternal search for satisfaction and fulfillment, despite the many times we have already walked the same path. 'High Hopes' is a melancholic meditation on the human desire to achieve our dreams and aspirations, whilst struggling with the realities of life and the weight of our ambitions.
The story about the creation of "High Hopes" is extremely curious. For those who imagine that such a crafted and detailed song would have required a long time to mature, David Gilmour brings a completely opposite reality. He says:
"High Hopes was actually supposed to be the last song on the album (Division Bell), a kind of finale, in one way or another. It's one of those songs that you work on quickly but beautifully, almost immediately. I carried some ideas with me into a cassette tape, with just a few bars of piano, and I went to a little house somewhere with Polly, to try to make some progress on writing lyrics. She gave me a phrase and very quickly we wrote it. Then I went back to the studio, with no one else there, I completed it and put it in a demo. I did everything myself and I can say that it was completed virtually in a single day."

Wonderful recitation as always! You recognize the key things in Pink Floyd's music very well. I think you should listen to both "I wish you were here" and "Shine on you crazy diamond" as soon as possible. Those two compositions are in a way anthems of many generations ... also pay attention to David Gilmour's solo work after Pink Floyd. you will hear more absolutely phenomenal music. Some say that actually David Gilmour is some kind of god walking the earth. And I mostly agree with that.😇 By all means keep it up. Your reactions are really wonderful.

Whenever my time comes, i want them to play THIS song full blast at my funeral. I bet nobody will keep it dry when David starts his solo! It's so beautifull!
Also i'm jealous of people that where there at the pulse concert in 1994. I was 4 years old in '94 so i was too young to go. My parents did see them multiple times, so i grew up listening to the records. But i've never had the chance to watch them play live.
One band that still plays progressive music is Porcupine Tree. They started out when bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis, Marillion etc "stopped" making new records. But they are imo just as good, and have an amazing drummer!
I did see them live in their Closure/Continuation tour in the Ziggo Dome Amsterdam. (They released it as a live album/blu ray) It's hands down the best concert i've been to. You should really check them out.
    Especially their live performances!

My favorite Pink Floyd song is Coming Back to Life. It is one of their very few feel good songs. It's about, no matter who has put you through the wringer and crapped on you in the past, saying screw that I'm going back to my hopes and dreams and goals, with or without you. The bell tolling at the beginning is The Division Bell, a bell that is rung in British Parliament to signal and time (8 minutes) to vote for or against a resolution. It also signals the start of the day and 2 minutes of prayer. You're not far off, it's actually an epilogue, looking back on your life in old age and the High Hopes you had for your life when you were young.

Eight months later I know, Stacey but if you haven't heard the song yet I heartily recommend
    "Learning to Fly."
That one gets played at my remembrance after I'm out of here. It's a song about life of course and it hits like all of the three I've seen you hear so far.
Like the Classical music from the past, Floyd will be remembered centuries from now when the rest have turned to dust on the lens of time.
The guitar David did his solo on was a steel guitar which is actually very much used in country music. Leave it to David to lift such a beautiful solo from it. At 78 I've been following Floyd from the very beginning and loved it all.

No surprise at all Stacey. This song taps into some really deep stuff. For me it's a sadness of realizing how short this life is and how I've got less time left than I've already experienced. It's so hard to articulate, but when David starts into the steel guitar solo, I lose it every time. He's such a gifted musician to be able to make a song mean so much to us. It's universal. I am incredibly fortunate to be able to see David in concert next month in the Hollywood Bowl. I never thought I'd have the chance. High Hopes is in the set list, and I'll tell you right now I'm going to have a lump in my throat when the bell starts and a complete puddle when he does the solo. Thanks for posting this.

This song evokes childhood memories of summer in a typical English village set in green rolling countryside on a sunny Sunday morning, the village church bellringing, playing in the corner of the farmer's field with friends where hollows in the hedgerows became our dens, and we'd jump across a small brook, occasionally losing our footing and getting our feet wet. Happy days.

The bell is the parliament’s division bell, but to me, sounds here as a powerful symbol : it is the bell that rings the time when you depart from childhood’s fusional experience of the world, the time when you set out for fame, money, ambition and other social decoys … and lose touch with the sensuous and rapturous matter of life. Eventually, it is the tolling bell of your childhood’s funeral. And the beautifully elegiac music targets the core of your heart. Once again.
Pink Floyd is the only band I know of whose music merges so perfectly emotion and meaning.
All my love to you all who are as moved by it as I am.

Another great reaction, Stacey. You are definitely not alone when shedding soulful tears during Pink Floyd's transcendent music..... I'd like to break down this great Pulse concert for you, in regards to the type of music they perform at this show. For more beautiful, moving ballads, check out Shine On You Crazy Diamond (the concert opener), Wish You Were Here, The Great Gig In The Sky, and Us And Them. When you want a break from tearing up, go to their faster songs, which have a unique, mesmerizing power all their own: Keep Talking, Another Brick In The Wall, One Of These Days, Sorrow, and the concert finale: Run Like Hell.... Another great rocker from an earlier concert (1987): The Dogs Of War (from the same Delicate Sound Of Thunder film you watched for On The Turning Away). For me, it is one of the great over-looked gems from Pink Floyd's live performances.

When David was allowed to close Pink Floyd out with the last three albums you realize what could have been. High Hopes is my favorite Pink Floyd song ever and would have not been allowed under Roger. Theatrical Pink Floyd is just the best and David shined in the last three albums. Thank you David, Nick and Richard!!!!
