well....yes and no. Making a mistake here or there is one thing, but playing terribly is another thing entirely. I don't particularly believe Petrucci would ever play 'terribly', he's too much of a perfectionist to let that happen. It could happen with a badly setup guitar, or some other setup problems. Otherwise the culprit it probably because one hasn't learned the pieces well, or worse, the general technique and general musicianship isn't up to scratch. Yes, one can still make one or two mistakes, but it should never happen twice on two different shows. A mistake happens for very specific reasons :)
Does nobody realize that he’s just a decent guitar player. It’s obvious that he does play the cleanest, or in tune, and lacks a since of timing. I’m not even in the band and best believe I would never be a whole measure behind on the “One” solo. His been playing for years and I may not play the fastest but I am technically better than him as far as technique and he’s been playing literally 3 times as long as me. Yeah I've noticed that they played really good music but they are mediocre. I noticed that Kirk isn't that good but he managed to make it work. Lars is considered the lowest in the great metal drummers list. Their best members were Dave, Cliff, and Jason. I haven't heard much of robert but i hear he is good, not great but not bad.
Kirk Hammett is the reason that kids pick up a guitar and starts playing. But when the kids become good at playing, they realize that Kirk isnt better than the avarage guitar player, and starts listening to greater musicians. Still loves Kirk by the way. He was a huge inspiration back then...
yep, then i got into buckethead, michael romeo and paul gilbert. I was really into metallica in middle school. Then freshman year in hs, a sophomore introduced me to symphony x and i was blown away. Of course being self taught back then, Romeo's work was way out of my league. Now 20 years later, with more knowledge and experience about proper technique, I'm finally cracking some of Romeo's stuff.
I understand how difficult it can be as a guitarist to watch someone else play a riff and then play that riff yourself. It's clear that he learns differently than other guitarists. It may take him longer to ramp up and get the riffs down, but once he gets it, he has a stone cold lock on it. Kirk is awesome, end of story.

Hey guys, does anyone else believe this is a silly mix from few bad takes or some rehearsals when you just start to learn a new stuff. E.g. James brought some new material and said, "Kirk, try it..." So the name of the video should be "Everybody sucks sometimes" or smth. like that because as everyone can see sometimes Kirk misses some notes (as we all do, by the way) but in 99 cases of 100 he is great. But as we all know it is very comfortable to find evidences that nobody's perfect... He has been one of the most influential guitar players in metal music since mid 1980s. Thumbs up for Kirk!!!
To be a truly great guitar player is not only about playing the fastest are most precise, it also encompasses being creative and original and doing ground breaking things, and be a true artist of your craft. If your just simply up their trying to play as precise and as fast as the next guy and thats your only goal, than your only a one dimensional player, but to be a decent guitar player and to also be creative and charismatic and see guitar playing as an are and not a competition
Amazing. I know alot of musicians put players up to "God" status, but Kirk is a human and no matter how talented you are you will have off days. It happens. That doesn't mean he sucks. I have been playing guitar for over 10 years. Most of the time I play pretty well, some days I never make a mistake and play incredible, and there are other days that I can't play one some without messing up and I get frustrated as hell. It happens people. Give the man a break whether you like Metallica or not.

I'm aware this comment is 5 years old, so you or anyone will likely not see this, but Kirk is the lead guitarist for one of the most well known metal bands of all time. I highly doubt anyone in this thread could take his place. Also, James Hetfield is one of the best rhythm guitarists out there, so I'd imagine everyone would have a hard time learning his new riff at least once.

If you actually play guitar you’ll find out that when you play similar songs sometimes you’ll end up fucking up because you’ll be thinking of the similar section of the other song and accidentally slip into playing the other song. I’m pretty sure it’s that or something similar that is fucking with Kirk. I wouldn’t compare this to everyone having a bad day, I’d call it a brain fart. Also if you aren’t the one who created the riff sometimes your own mind will feel like the riff needs to be played a little differently.
@anthony but they do use pitch correction in the studio. Everyone does. It's really common to use live as well. Even bands that's been around for ages. And there's nothing wrong with that necessarily, but there's a real cult of people not realizing this, reiterating the same lame bashing for modern studio techniques.

I keep watching this and I can only defend Metallica to a certain point because this is pretty bad. When Metallica was younger they worked great as a team because they had a lot in common but now they all have other interest. The only thing they have in common now is that they are in the same band. Death magnetic was and is a good album for a band that grew apart for years but I don't think Metallica is perfect but they ruled the 80s in thrash metal.
It's about time they quit. I'm actually planning on celebrating their inevitable break up/demise because enough is enough. If they completely quit after St. Anger I would've understood, and I still actually like that album. Everything else afterwards is EVEN WORSE than that rubbish.

Anyway, I've heard Atlas Rise a lot before because of the Justice mix instrumental fan version (I think before the album was released) and even in that "sound" it's still more of the same stuff. It made me realise I'm happy to have what I got from 1980s and 1990s Metallica and I can never ask for more, because they keep changing because they're human beings and it would be human of me to quit with the expectations considering they're past their physical prime. I just hope they quit before they become geriatric and are on top of their game and world when they'll be remembered the most, rather than to fade away into obscurity which would be the biggest shame.
Everyone fails, or not? Kirk has been an inspiration to A LOT of metal guitar players in the world (including myself). Even Andy James, John Petrucci, Steve Vai or Satriani have failed sometime in their career. He's not the "best player ever", or any kind of "guitar god" (anyway, he's really good), that's true, but saying that he sucks makes me wanna punch you in the face.

I know you are trolling. But speed isn't everything. And Kirk was a good guitarist in the 80s and early 90s. He has now got a lot sloppier. He's just getting old. But really, you may have been faster or more accurate than Kirk (which I doubt if we are talking about late 80s Kirk) but that's different than being a good musician. Nobody cares about how fast you can play if you can't play musically. Kirk is a guitarist and a musician. He writes songs and solos and influences people. He has his own recognizable playing style (and I'm not talking about his wah abuse). Most guitarists that say they are better than Kirk only think that way because they can play Kirk's solos (why would Kirk's solos be the most technical stuff he can play?). They completely forget that Kirk wrote those solos and he needs to play them in front of thousands of people. Being a good guitarist/musician is more than speed and accuracy. It's about being creative, having your own voice.
I mean, if you played guitar, you would know Metallica has to be played rhythmically correct, or the whole thing needs to be thrown out. These outtakes are Kirk learning a song for the first time, by ear, and by watching James in front of him....I don't understand why this video even exists, you get an insight to their creative process, and call the guitarist bad? I don't understand people sometimes lol
It's simple stuff, and someone with Kirk's years and years of experience should not have such a hard time with it. I might sound elitist, but he's clearly grown more sloppy over the years. You can love Metallica and appreciate Kirk's good contributions while still criticizing him.

The great thing about Kirk, is that he never plays the same lead or uses the same sound on every song every time every album. No wait, that's someone else.
Mesa boogies & rat pedal for James, I definitely agree but Kirk’s playing is worse than Jame’s tone. Which used to be great. James is better all around skill wise as well. He plays rhythm but that doesn’t mean he can’t do leads. Trust
I keep watching this and I can only defend Metallica to a certain point because this is pretty bad. When Metallica was younger they worked great as a team because they had a lot in common but now they all have other interest. The only thing they have in common now is that they are in the same band. Death magnetic was and is a good album for a band that grew apart for years but I don't think Metallica is perfect but they ruled the 80s in thrash metal.
It's about time they quit. I'm actually planning on celebrating their inevitable break up/demise because enough is enough. If they completely quit after St. Anger I would've understood, and I still actually like that album. Everything else afterwards is EVEN WORSE than that rubbish.

Anyway, I've heard Atlas Rise a lot before because of the Justice mix instrumental fan version (I think before the album was released) and even in that "sound" it's still more of the same stuff. It made me realise I'm happy to have what I got from 1980s and 1990s Metallica and I can never ask for more, because they keep changing because they're human beings and it would be human of me to quit with the expectations considering they're past their physical prime.
I just hope they quit before they become geriatric and are on top of their game and world when they'll be remembered the most, rather than to fade away into obscurity which would be the biggest shame.

Everyone fails, or not? Kirk has been an inspiration to A LOT of metal guitar players in the world (including myself). Even Andy James, John Petrucci, Steve Vai or Satriani have failed sometime in their career. He's not the "best player ever", or any kind of "guitar god" (anyway, he's really good), that's true, but saying that he sucks makes me wanna punch you in the face.

Man, anyone who’s ever put the time in on the guitbox… Thousands upon thousands of hours and built their skills to a level you never dreamed possible have all had those moments… I feel for him there. Even times I’ve worked on something super simple, hell, I had it down perfect the day before and then for some reason I just can’t get it right. Can still play everything else superbly, but that one stupid riff just isn’t vibing with me at that moment & I just can’t seem to Fkn play the damn thing right!!! Wtf!!!! DAMMIT!!!! 😂

I know you are trolling. But speed isn't everything. And Kirk was a good guitarist in the 80s and early 90s. He has now got a lot sloppier. He's just getting old. But really, you may have been faster or more accurate than Kirk (which I doubt if we are talking about late 80s Kirk) but that's different than being a good musician. Nobody cares about how fast you can play if you can't play musically. Kirk is a guitarist and a musician. He writes songs and solos and influences people. He has his own recognizable playing style (and I'm not talking about his wah abuse). Most guitarists that say they are better than Kirk only think that way because they can play Kirk's solos (why would Kirk's solos be the most technical stuff he can play?). They completely forget that Kirk wrote those solos and he needs to play them in front of thousands of people. Being a good guitarist/musician is more than speed and accuracy. It's about being creative, having your own voice.
I mean, if you played guitar, you would know Metallica has to be played rhythmically correct, or the whole thing needs to be thrown out.
These outtakes are Kirk learning a song for the first time, by ear, and by watching James in front of him....I don't understand why this video even exists, you get an insight to their creative process, and call the guitarist bad? I don't understand people sometimes lol
It's simple stuff, and someone with Kirk's years and years of experience should not have such a hard time with it. I might sound elitist, but he's clearly grown more sloppy over the years. You can love Metallica and appreciate Kirk's good contributions while still criticizing him.

totally agree kirk is an awesome guitar player and has been an influence for many many bands these are just some videos where he fails but EVERY GUITAR PLAYER OR SINGER OR MUSICIAN FAILS NO MATTER HOW GOOD THEY ARE he is personaly my favorite guitar player
