Can't believe that they spend a lot of time recording and 'creating' new songs to find out that those are the 'best' solos that Kirk can come out with.
I can't believe someone is getting paid to listen to that and say "that's great Kirk, we'll put it on the album". Bob rock told him his unforgiven solo sucked and he came back with a solo that was good
No no. That's the other way around. Kirk occasionally lays good enough solos. He plays a couple of variations. Then Lars comes in and selects the "most lively" one out of them. You can watch it happening in the "Making of Death Magnetic" movie.
I think the guitar solos that Kirk Hammett has done on The Black Album all the way to 72 Seasons were inspired but that inspiration leads to repetitive ideas and confused writing. I think it's Kirk wanting to be edgy and technical while maintaining his signature tone, keeping it in the confines of the song, and doing something different. Being inspired to play or create a solo he is always down for. He needs to do a solo none metal album I think. He needs to maybe not do a metal solo project but one inspired by blues and jazz. This could restart the creativity for metal guitar solos. Different ideas that does work in blues or jazz but can translate to metal also. Maybe even add more delay or more distortion even reverb to the over used wah. What does Kirk like to drink? Wahter. When Kirk isn't performing or surfing what does he like to do? He likes to wahlk on the beach. Why did Kirk's wife get mad at him? He wanted to name thier kid Wahlter Wah Wah Wammy Bar Hammett.
Also the Hardwire solo is not bad. It just has this power speed punk attitude and I love it. And this coming from someone who’s favourite solos are Blackened and Creeping Death
The fact that there are no pre Death Magnetic songs (except for I Disappear) included in this list says something. Judas Kiss though? Felt
I love how he says “I like Kirk, he has a few good solos to his name” yeah he actually has like 15 ultra memorable and iconic guitar solos that utilize shred techniques. Something like 2% of metal and general shred guitarists can say. Making this crap sound good is hard.

So maybe he is responsible for Kirk’s awful solos recently. Because he is directing him way to much, so Kirk doesn’t have space to express his own ideas freely
I'd rather have bad solos than none at all. It's a mortal sin to play metal without guitar solos. My Death Magnetic theory: Rick Rubin produced Reign In Blood album by Slayer. Kerry King said he got a bit lazy for the solos in that album but people thought his abstract style of lead playing suited the aggression of the album so he stuck with that style. Kirk hasn't been the same guitarist since St Anger. It's as if that took something out of kirk psychologically. Rick Rubin's metal experience was mostly with Slayer so he didn't push Kirk the way Bob Rock did on The Unforgiven and Wherever I May Roam. Also, there's a clip of Lars telling Kirk he preferred an improvised solo over one Kirk really worked on in the Death Magnetic sessions. So Lars' poor taste in what a solo should sound like also had a bad influence on Kirk.

In the realm of Metallica, it sounds fitting. If you're looking for bands with legendary solos that stand out on their own, Megadeth would be a standout choice. Some bands shine through their general formula, while others find success with distinctive approaches, such as sarcastic or noisy solos, which may be more valued than technical virtuosity in certain genres. That's what really made me dislike Kirk as a guitarist - their modern stuff. I really enjoyed some James' work on the Death Magnetic, Hardwired, and 72 Seasons. He came up with some really good riffs, and his vocal work improved a lot (especially on 72 seasons) only for Kirk to come and shit all over it with his improvised, horrendous solos. It's like he was doing a fucking gig out of Fiverr or something to write 12 whatever solos and cash his money.

They still make AJFA songs but in a more plastic tasting way if that makes sense. It’s too clean. His portals EP was amazing. But oh well. Get that check Kirk.
With the exception of a few most of modern day Kirk hammett solos feel very improvised but not that good. Like I honestly do think he thinks he's a far better lead than he actually is. Nothing is really all that memorable
Hahaha. He has the most memorable solo’s in Metal. At least thrash. He has the best sense for melody in a raw creative way. For example all top Metallica solo’s are way more memorable then top Megadeth’s solo’s. Even more memorable then Pantera’s solo’s (though Dimebag really kicks ass)
I've been a Metallica fan for years, but akork has gotten lazy and sloppy. This whole business of Lars supervising and Kirk being allowed to do them by the seat or his pants is ridiculous. I LOVE the fact that James' so on S&R dusts Kirks. Generally speaking, Death Magnetic has the last Kirk solos I really like. I love My Apocalypse, but you're right; that's a weird ending. Murder One sucks, period. But that solo? He has no feel for the tone of the song. I could just imagine the Bob Rock cringe from the early Unforgiven solos. He's been downhill since the Black albim. Satriani and others assisted him on the early albims. Bob Rock coached the hell outta him on TBA. When has he ever been completely on his own. Some of his riffs that made some songs is his only saving Grace.
I still stand by the fact that Murder One is his worst solo. I can FEEL how sloppy that solo is, it’s painful. As a whole that song sucked, and that’s a shame, because it’s supposed to be a tribute to Lemmy. Like, damn, they made a better tribute to Layne Staley ffs (Rebel Of Babylon).
To be fair, maybe the problem is the underlying rhytm guitar riff. They sound bland, uninspiring, mediocre and boring. From my experience, a good riff may invoce his own solo.
Not only do these solos suck from the point of view of note choice, above all they are played terribly. Bending and vibrato are the essence of the electric guitar.
Kill ‘em all and ride the lighting solos were very good, master and justice sloghtly worse, black album sloghtly worse and so forth. After st anger is 90% garbage solos ngl. Sounds like Kirk stopped trying
I don't like to come across harsh or as a hater but it's really difficult not to seem like that. I just want to preface by saying, it's not Kirk's fault he has all the fame and success, he just wanted to play music and then he and the band got extremely lucky. However, I just need to say it and it's as simple as this, not one single Kirk Hammet solo is good, literally none of them. You can name any you want, they are all littered with Poorly bent notes, horrible touch and intonation on kirks part, slop, thin whiny tone, regurgitated and cliche blues licks. If you were to ask the "Best" guitarists in the world, the ones who have a phenomenal ear and can hear the smallest errors in anyones playing, Guthrie Govan, Marco Sfogli, Matteo Mancuso, etc. They would all tell you it's intolerable to listen to Kirk's playing. I understand that the average music listener doesn't have a trained ear and can't hear what I'm hearing because it takes many years of playing to develop it. Just understand it's very frustrating to see the level of success he has achieved with his very below average level on guitar. I say this humbly and without suggesting I am the greatest by any means, it's just something that I had to get off my chest.
The Judis Kiss is a GREAT song and so is the solo and the solo to My Apocalypse is great and I Disappear is a sheite song. I agree with Murder 1 btw but na...totally don't agree with u

@@Atlas65 I do believe I said modern day like death magnetic and forward...mainly from hardwired and 72 seasons though.
I think ManUNkind’s solo should have been on Confusion instead, to make that track better live up to its name. 😂
Confusion itself is up there
An objective critiscism of Kirk is that he uses 4 or 5 moves all the time and is very predictable. It's never a good thing in any creative endeavour.
The Enter Sandman solo is absolute dog water too.
Hardwireds solo isn’t bad, it’s just uninspired. It fits well
I've been a Metallica fan for years, but akork has gotten lazy and sloppy.
For whom the bell tolls?
Basic doesnt means bad
Nah My Apocalypse is great
I disappear has a very good solo
I still stand by the fact that Murder One is his worst solo. I can FEEL how sloppy that solo is, it’s painful. As a whole that song sucked, and that’s a shame, because it’s supposed to be a tribute to Lemmy. Like, damn, they made a better tribute to Layne Staley ffs (Rebel Of Babylon).
To be fair, maybe the problem is the underlying rhytm guitar riff. They sound bland, uninspiring, mediocre and boring. From my experience, a good riff may invoce his own solo.
I love Metallica not for Kirk's guitar solos, but for Lars's drumming. No seriously, I mean it! 😉
Where's Lux Aeterna?
The end of the lines solo is just a kerry king solo
my apocalypse solo is amazing
He said that what bothers is the ending of the solo, not the solo itself.
@@gabrielpaiva9070 i can agree lol
@@gabrielpaiva9070 also w pfp
We can at least praise Murder One's solo for not being mindless wah wah spam, however uninspired it is
Everything u said about murder one I strongly disagree with
buddy tried to hide dave
Not only do these solos suck from the point of view of note choice, above all they are played terribly. Bending and vibrato are the essence of the electric guitar.
i respect it but u did my apocalypse so so wrong
murder one is actually pretty good but the solo sold the somg
Some of their best recent solos. Gotta say, awful take.
Terrible solos, I fully agree with your choice!!🫣
Kill ‘em all and ride the lighting solos were very good, master and justice sloghtly worse, black album sloghtly worse and so forth. After st anger is 90% garbage solos ngl. Sounds like Kirk stopped trying
Master was the best phase for Kirk imo
AJFA has his best all around performances @@Ryu_Ake The Black Album has his best texture and tones to me (best use of wah, too imho).
Lately since like 2008 or so Kirks solos have been getting worse he lost all the passion in Metallica
I disappear is actually a james hetfield solo
Played by Kirk in the recording
Manunkind is only confusing to you because all the lyrics are based on biblical scriptures
The Judis Kiss is a GREAT song and so is the solo and the solo to My Apocalypse is great and I Disappear is a sheite song. I agree with Murder 1 btw but na...totally don't agree with u
Judas Kiss solo slaps tho idc
I don't know why they even bother with guitar solos anymore. The new solos are worthless and forgettable. I can't imagine anyone listening to those and being like "that's awesome, I wanna learn that on guitar"
TRUE. this thread is nothing but a bunch of cope. dude must have dementia to play this bad
