    I've just purchased Tamron SP 70-300mm USD. I installed this lense using Viltrox EF-M1 mounting to my Lumix G7. Some reviews I can share:
    1. Autofocus, as you said, quite slower than my native panasonic lense
    2. Lens stabilizer (VC) of the lens works well in autofocus mode, but in manual focus mode this VC keep turn-off by itself every time I take a picture. I have to turn off and turn on again after take a picture to get the VCIs it purely because of compatibility issue?
    3. Sharpness is very good. I am satisfied with that.

    Interesting review Matti. I've found the Viltrox with a Canon 50mm f1.8 is a useful, and sharp combo' on my Lumix. Of course the AF is nothing like as fast as native lenses, but it's workable. Most useful is the f1.3 maximum aperture the Viltrox creates, making for a fast, cheap, portrait lens. At only £100ukp, it's worth having if you have Canon and MFT kit.

      I've heard that people use that cheap Canon 50mm and that it works well.

  • @GeorgeStar

    The only good thing is it's basically a universal adapter. If you want to mount an OM 50mm f1.8 for example you simply get an OM>EF adapter which gives you about a 72mm f1.3 equivalent.

    Hey Matti, have you tried with the Metabones speed booster, this looks like a very bad focusing with the Sigma, I was thinking for this combo for event photography with my OM-1. Of course, the Pana-Leica contrast AF is far worse, but looks like even with PD AF will be bad...

    I use metabones for some of my canon lenses. I like the short DOF I get with sigma 18-35 and metabones. I don't get very short depth of field with my Panasonic F2.8 lenses. That being said, I don't need short DOF every time (or actually that often).

    This adapter does nothing but freeze my Panasonic G7. I was so excited to get this and made sure everything was up to date and then constant freezing have to take the battery out. Contacted Viltrox and they told me it's only tested to properly work in regards to Panasonic the GH4, GH5, GH5s, GX85 and the GF1.😭

    That's the difference between the Metabones and Viltrox. Precision and the firmware. On a long comparison I saw, I noticed the autofocus works much better with the Metabones. DFD, also, uses lens profiles for it to work quicker - can we create these profiles? Thanks!

    My suggestion: I would have FIRST just tried one of the old Olympus 4/3 lenses (like 12-60mm or 14-54mm lens) with a 4/3 to m4/3 lens adapter. How is the G9's performance with this kind of setup? I would then compare the G9's performance with the Viltrox EF-M2 and 3rd party lenses to the performance with the 4/3 lenses.

  • @markschneider3915
    @markschneider3915 3 года назад +1

    So I saw one youtuber preferred the Nikon version, as the Canon versions AF was worthless and he's only using manual focus anyway and the Canon version is AF only? Most people using this setup are video content creators and us it on a tri-pod anyway. I assume the Metabones is better but it's a lot more expensive.

  • @bege4394

    Thank you for your thoughts over this little adapter. Few points: the adapter seems to be unrealiable with my Sigma but not with my Canon lenses. I've thought that it may be because Sigma's backward-engineered and thus not 100% the same as Canon EF lenses. About focusing near and to infinity: the adapter can be adjusted by turning the glass element clockwise or counter clockwise. No tools needed, just a good grip with index finger and thumb. This way I've adjusted the adapter they way that all my lenses will focus to infinity with it.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for those tips. I didn't have Canon lenses available, but you could be right about the reverse engineering. My problem was only that it would not AF to very far with the Sigma at 18mm, but it would focus at infinity manually.

      @bege4394 5 лет назад +2

      @@mattisulanto Oops, missed that bit @ 3:28 , just watched your video again. And wow, well that won't be fixed twisting the element. :D A Lumix camera + Metabones Speedbooster + Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 is very common combination - and nowadays Viltrox is raising its popularity over Metabones. So this might be a known problem. I haven't guugl'd about it tho. And about that common combination thingie, let's see how Panasonic 10-25mm f/1.7 will change the scene... I hope we'll see that zoom on your channel in the future. About the native Canon EF lenses, if you ever stumble upon an EF 100mm f2.0 USM lens, well that one's sharp with m4/3 even with a dummy adapter a real joy to use with Viltrox.

    Just got my very affordable Pixco M42 - MFT adapter from ebay. First impressions are great! Been using it with my Helios 44M-4, and I see no difference in image quality, while getting a better focal length (about 83mm) and more light gathering. Very interesting alternative to the more clinical Olympus 45mm 1.8. There's a Mir 37mm on the way, and I'm looking forward to testing it out on the adapter.
    All manual of course, and I'm no pixel peeper, so maybe the Viltrox/Sigma combo is a more sensible choice for more sensible people. ;)

    Thank you for the in-depth testing! I like my "straight" adapters for old/manual lenses to micro-four-thirds -- as I have a *LOT* of old lenses with various mounts. The only issues that I have had with very few lenses/adapters was infinity focus. But there are no elements to get in the way of focus (of course, manual focus) or image quality. And those "passive" adapters cost around $20 US -- a lot cheaper. Hey -- I saw Peter in your pictures! Haha! And it looks beautiful there in Helsinki!

    Great review! I own a Metabones Speedbooster 0.64 with my Lumix GH5 and I love the perfect bokeh with Rokinon lenses to say an example. I wouldn´t use native Panasonic lenses due to that leak of bokeh and that awkward distortion that a 25mm ¨converted to 50mm¨ makes. Native Panasonic lenses are more like ¨video¨, not cinema. Regards from Stockholm,
    Hi Neighbour!
    Off topic, but I need some help!
    When I set the camera to Manual in Creative Movie Mode, the shutter speed jumps from 1/50 to 1/120 the moment I press the record button and reverts to 50 upon ending the recording.
    I went into the menu options in Creative Movie Mode and chose Exposure Mode. I tried choosing M and S. In both cases, as soon as I press record, the shutter speed disappears from the screen and reappears after ending the shoot.
    Is that normal?
    Any ideas?

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  4 года назад

      Your camera is the G9? You probably are not on manual mode. On the rear screen, there should be a small red movie camera symbol with the letter M, in the upper left corner. If the letter is not M, you are not on manual mode. If you don't see the symbol, press the DISP button until you see it. Go to menu and change your exposure mode to M, if it's not M. That's all I can think of based on what you said.
