If you think about it, Outside Xtra is like a gritty reboot of Outside Xbox, except when they were writing down the concept for it, they accidentally mistook "morbid" for "adorbs" or something.
It's like a gritty de-boot. Like back in the 80s when they made a kid's cartoon out of "Rambo", a film series about a traumatized veteran who embodied the national scars of the Vietnam War. Fun, kids!

The game was also inherently flawed in that it flagged the mission as complete when done, so you couldn't replay the missions. At all. So it was basically a game you could play once.
To be fair to Warrior Within, from a pure gameplay standpoint, it was the best of the Sands of Time trilogy. More varied and less grindy combat than the first game, less Vizir Butterfly puzzle bosses than the last game. Large areas to explore with a focus on learning the areas instead of just passing through once. The Dahaka chases that have you racking your brains at times to figure out how to platform your way out while running from one of the more alarming creatures in gaming at the time. Also, from a story perspective, I liked the idea that the Empress of Time was creating the Sands of Time in hopes of finding a way to not get murdered by the guy who wants to kill her to stop her from creating the Sands of Time. Tragic irony is fun!
From my perspective, Warrior Within was the best game of the three. It had a compelling story, the best combat mechanics, puzzles in nearly every room and the tone that was never replicated in any of the POP games so far. I also liked The Two Thrones, due to similar combat mechanics but still, I deem Warrior Within to be the superior one.

Can Oxbox get a gritty reboot ? Like, Mike could be a post apocalyptic paladin dragon thing , Andy a cool cowboy and Jane , well she just needs to throw away her mortal disguise . Simple

*I never Warrior Within were cool, nor that it tried to. It was meant to be gritty. After everything the prince went through in Sands of Time he was bound to become grim and moody - it just made sense.*
While darker and edgier (TvTropes is your friend) than the first game, it is not reboot as it a canonical sequel like PoPWW) and the IP did not lie fallow for a decade or so.
The Legend of Spyro series is actually super fucking awesome. Even if it's a bit darker, A New Beginning is really a great story and game. The Eternal Night is obviously even darker but stupidly engaging. Third game in the series was okay, I guess.
Cam Well, not every country on the planet. You'll get laughed off my country if you ever say any PoP game is better than Warrior Within. And Two Thrones is the worst, according to everyone here (including me).
I am only just now finding out that Spore had a sequel, and I’m already disappointed that EA made it a dungeon crawler of all things. The original Spore had so much potential, and just because it had a lot of flaws didn’t mean they couldn’t be learned from to make a really good game, instead of abandoning the concept altogether.
So when is the Oxbox gritty reboot? Jane as a leather-clad biker gal, Mike as the grizzled veteran cop, and Andy as the ex-Marine who has seen too much...
Tomb Raider's become a bit too dark and gritty. Gone are the simple days of shutting your butler in the freezer and wandering through ruins occasionally blasting the heads off endangered animals: now it's all sneaking round camps of trigger happy dudes with automatic rifles and nightmare fuel close-quarters freaky corpse ankle grabs. Times has changed.
Alone in the Dark did one thing I thought was really cool. Every time you loaded your game it did a "Last Time on Alone in the Dark" style loading screen inspired by drama series.
Lots of people are saying it in the comments, and I'll say it too. The Legend of Spyro was my jam back when I first bought and played Dawn of the Dragon (before any of the other two). People are still to this day ignoring the fact that he used the “puny god” move four years before it was cool, and used a chain to prevent split-screen and provide cool gameplay features in single player and coop which would be later evolved in Astral Chain (makes me want to play Dawn of the Dragon again due to that vibe). Not to mention it had great music, and in Dawn of the Dragon it spared us the embarassment of falling to our deaths every few minutes despite having wings meant for flying. When you consider it the bosses in the franchise went from a coward who would only run from you and took two hits to defeat to a hoard of rock and lava giants and a dragon version of Ganondorf. Not to mention Cynder who became a fan-favorite people are asking for in a sequel to the Reignited Trilogy to replace Enter the Dragonfly and anything after it. Though not perfect due to time and budget restraints for all three games, it was still great for what it was for new and returning audiences who felt it was fair that Spyro would only grow up with its audience. Thanks to reignited I'm glad I finally know what made him special in his classics, I will always love both of those trilogies, and I hope the Legend of Spyro at least gets considered for the same treatment that the originals received. And need I mention that classic Spyro burns innocent sheep alive for his own benefit instead of buy armour so he doesn't have to? It's pretty dark when you think about it that way. Does that make both of them gritty?
I actually like Shadow the Hedgehog. I will freely admit that the controls were touchy and the plot, depending on your choices in the game, could be disjointed and hard to follow sometimes, but the concept was amazing and I wish Sega would make a sequel to it that improves on the choice based storyline progression and gives it more polished controls. I played the game for months making sure I unlocked all the possible endings and the true ending
Honestly really surprised that DMC wasn't on this list. It went from a witty, charismatic, and really cool main character who; yes, lost his family, but seeks to get his revenge through helping people deal with their demonic problems. To a dark and gritty world where demons rule and cause the world to sin through media and the only one who can stop them is an edge lord nephilim, who doesn't care about anyone else other than himself until way later in the game. That is the perfect example for this list.
Fun Fact Shadow the Hedgehog was suppose to be Sonic’s fatherly mentor like figure. But decided to be the emo rival. Like Knuckles wasn’t enough. I do love all Sonic characters. Just still wanted to see that.
I find it hilarious that Prince of Persia the Sands of Time had the main character inadvertently start an apocalypse causing everyone except 3 people to turn into vicious sand monsters and forced the main character to kill his own father, and yet it is less dark than the sequel. I think Warrior Within is more fun though.
The prince of Persia was not trying to be “cool” he was desperate to free himself from the monster haunting him and no matter how hard he tries he kept failing...Plus everyone he loved is dead
BOMBER MAN! I’ve been trying to remember the name of that game forever! Ever since playing it at my neighbors’ house as a little kid! Thank you for reminding me!!
Who the hell keeps including Warrior Within into these lists? It was honestly the best of the trilogy. And it was only overly dark in the beginning. The environments later become VERY colourful and pretty.
I enjoy watching the subtitles for all Oxbox videos, mostly because it says that ’there’s nothing prettier than a man with no memory!’! Also Ellen have you looked behind the fridge, everything I’ve ever lost is usually there!
They are talking about a game they most likely never played. After playing PoPWW, all the other games in the series seemed weak by comparison. When Godsmack was playing in the background, you felt like a total beast; but then when the Dahaka was after you, it was time to run like a scared b!tch,,,,,,,,,,,,and that switch-up made the game feel more realistic and involving.
It's not a reboot (which makes the tonal shift even more jarring), but Jak 2 was so much darker than Jak & Daxter. Where the first game was more like a Super Mario 64-style game, the second one opens with Jak being experimented on, gaining dark eco powers, his first-ever words being his proclamation of his intention to murder the leader of a city, a Grand Theft Auto-like open world, and the very liberal use of many types of futuristic guns.

If I remember right they’re literally called team dark, because subtlety.
Yeah but then you have THAT DAMN CROCODILE IN TEAM SONIC
That's quite funny actually aha. I never try to be on top though >_
Sonic Heroes was amazing tho, so I can't be too critical of Shadow
*I never Warrior Within were cool, nor that it tried to. It was meant to be gritty. After everything the prince went through in Sands of Time he was bound to become grim and moody - it just made sense.*
You'll forgot to mention Smash Blue Whale and his Dark Souls variant.
I remember when my dad got a Sonic game and I managed to convince my little brother that Knuckles was actually Shadow
Jane is so cool.
I actually loved Prince of Persia Warrior Within. That may have had something to do with me getting it as a free game on my new PS2 though...
...........or perhaps the game's tone was way more in keeping with the theme of the game ?????
Jak and daxter had a gritty reboot as well. In jak 2 main protagonist jak's the first words that jak ever says is, "im going to kill praxton."
darksoul yeah but at least jak 2 was good
Yeah but that actually worked.
While darker and edgier (TvTropes is your friend) than the first game, it is not reboot as it a canonical sequel like PoPWW) and the IP did not lie fallow for a decade or so.
So Spyro just never noticed that he was several times larger than any of his relatives? Hilarious.
I liked the legend of spyro a new beginning saga tho
Skylanders was the bad one imo
Skylanders isn't even a Spyro game, we need more Spyro games
The Legend of Spyro series is actually super fucking awesome. Even if it's a bit darker, A New Beginning is really a great story and game. The Eternal Night is obviously even darker but stupidly engaging. Third game in the series was okay, I guess.
Hey! Warrior Within is the best Prince of Persia game ever, period.
agreed
Cam
Well, not every country on the planet.
As soon as I saw Shadow in the thumbnail, I KNEW this was gonna get edgy!
Tell me about it. Not to mention the puzzles are much easier and Lara falls down all the time.
Umbra pressure is the best pun I've seen in weeks.
Top class punsmanship, OxBox.
I loved the Legend of Spyro games! They were amazing and I played them for a very long time as a kid. (And they were my first Spyro games after all.)
Wow, Jane is SOOOOOO cool! :P
And Andy is SOOOOOO gritty! XD
OMG shadow the hedgehog was AWESOME ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.
Yas
Alone in the Dark did one thing I thought was really cool. Every time you loaded your game it did a "Last Time on Alone in the Dark" style loading screen inspired by drama series.
God Jane looked cool not trying to present a RUclips video I’m gonna try that in my job as a train driver

M&S advert voiceover: This isn't just an early 2000s goth makeover, this is an early 2000s cybergoth makeover.
I kinda liked the Legend of Spyro series, but the original trilogy will always be the best
Jane doesn't seem really sorry for bombermen...
So you mean to tell me that the dragonflies had to tell him he wasn’t related to them?
Honestly really surprised that DMC wasn't on this list. It went from a witty, charismatic, and really cool main character who; yes, lost his family, but seeks to get his revenge through helping people deal with their demonic problems. To a dark and gritty world where demons rule and cause the world to sin through media and the only one who can stop them is an edge lord nephilim, who doesn't care about anyone else other than himself until way later in the game. That is the perfect example for this list.
I almost forgot Shadow was a thing, he's hilariously edgy and I love it
One griddy reboot that had ZERO business existing is "The Banana Splits Movie".
I loved the whole that prince of Persia trilogy. Worked my butt off to get the good ending.
Fun Fact Shadow the Hedgehog was suppose to be Sonic’s fatherly mentor like figure. But decided to be the emo rival. Like Knuckles wasn’t enough. I do love all Sonic characters. Just still wanted to see that.
Legend of Spyro's on this list? Them's fightin' words.
A new beginning for the gamecube was the first spyro game i ever played, i loved it!
Outside Xtra is the grittiest of reboots...(looks at Labo video thumbnail)...yep gritty af.
Jane has me weak “yup science checks out”
The Legend Of Spyro trilogy was actually pretty good imo
I enjoy watching the subtitles for all Oxbox videos, mostly because it says that ’there’s nothing prettier than a man with no memory!’! Also Ellen have you looked behind the fridge, everything I’ve ever lost is usually there!
Prince of Persia Warrior Within was the best game in the series, what the hell are you talking about?
