Dead Space 2 did this. Elevator sections were used to disguise loading screens between areas, but in one of them they drop a monster on your head whilst you're cruising on up to the next part of the game.

What you failed to mention regarding Karateka Is that when you are in your standing/running stance, the one you need to use for the princess, it only takes a single hit to kill you. So you go through the whole game avoiding it just to be safe (made worse because the attack birds from later fights can fly at you at any point just as you are about to exit a fight area, so you generally maintain your attack stance right through the door). So the whole game trains you one way, just to screw you over with it at the very end.

Hitman: Blood Money. The mission Requiem. I already accepted that 47 was dead and this was a legit funeral (due to the credits rolling) but then I realized that he was still alive and would be cremated alive if I didn't start pressing buttons. Not to mention that the bad guy and his armed henchman are the only attendees at the funeral and they are not too happy to see the infamous clone assassin rise from his grave.

In the Borderlands DLC The Zombie Island of Doctor Ned (who is TOTALLY a new character and not some reskinned character from the main game with a mustache) the programmers give you the ol' bait and switch. Kill human Dr Ned and the credits start rolling. A couple of seconds into the credits and Zombie Ned tears through them like a certain character from The Shining. There is even a trophy/achievement for this point.

  • @jdonvance

That's a good tip for Karateka. It's a mirror of the mistake EVERYONE makes at the beginning when you run toward the first enemy without being in fighting stance and get instantly owned. (Moving forward in Fighting Stance is painfully slow, so how and when to switch between Fighting and... Running Stances is important.)

And earlier, in Hitman: Contracts cutscenes you were in a serene hotel, peacefully bleeding all over the room, only to find out that you're being raided by a local police and now you have to Leon your way through SWAT teams ready to shoot on sight.

Then, a gank battle where Friede gets back up and the giant Father Ariendel joins her in the battle. Then, after you beat the two of them, you're rewarded a titanite slab, a high tier item. And since you have only ever recieved items after defeating a boss, you relax, thinking you've won. Donkey Kong Country was one of the games I loved when I was a kid. Back then I was playing it in our family's computer, not knowing what the title of the game was, nor the fact that I was playing it on an emulator. When our computer got reformatted, the game was gone since backing up games wasn't something child me knew about. After that, I scoured the internet for Donkey Kong games, only to be disappointed. Who knew that almost 20 years later, I would get to know the name of the game I loved, as well as it's original platform. Thanks OX team, for filling the gaping hole in my childhood :)

Though phase 3 Sister Friede, Soul of Cinder and the Demon Prince fight come to mind thanks to the fact that there's no cutscene to indicate another phase for those fights after depleting the health bar all the way.

In Megaman Zero for GBA most boss fights end with the boss exploding or running away, like every megaman game created up to that point. So, when 18 year old me who'd been conditioned through over a decade of megaman games fought Phantom in the boss rush in Megaman Zero for the first time I didn't expect him to take me with him in a Kamikaze attack when he lost, especially since Harpuia, Fefnir, and Leviathan all don't have such dedication to the cause.

Death Duel for the Sega Genesis was the one the game that really got me. First person perspective scrolling shooter where you face enemies one at a time as mechs with exchangeable weapons and walls that can be destroyed being the only thing between you.
At the end of each fight the score would ring up but during the last fight while the score was ringing up the seemingly exploded opponent opens up to reveal a hidden one shot one kill rocket launcher. If you don't kill him before he shoots it you're dead.
I remember being 7 and it taking me forever to get good enough to make it to the last battle only to be blown up by that cheap shot. Pretty good game too.

There's a Borderlands DLC I don't know what it's called but at the start the villain falls down the stairs and dies, you laugh and watch the credits roll. Then he rips the credits in half as a hulk-thing and THEN you fight him. And it's hard.

For sort of the reverse of this, a time I thought I was in danger, but was actually totally safe: In Skullmonkeys (the console sequel to Neverhood), there's a bonus level where you're just running around collecting powerups, sort of like the hidden pipe areas full of coins in Super Mario Brothers. The music is soft and gentle, with a singer even going so far as to tell you "you're safe, there are no monsters here." And then suddenly the music shifts to what sounds like boss music with the singer screaming.... for all of about three seconds, and then it returns to normal. Nearly gave me a heart attack.

Not to mention when the Lets Dance Boys theme rolls, where you revisit certain fights throughout the remainder of the credits? Another one: in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, you fight an optional secret boss called Paranoia which is a jester who keeps going inside the mirrors in the room and shooting beams at you. However, once you won this somewhat easy boss fight, you go to the next room, expecting some rewards, but what you get instead is the same boss again, except now he's 5 times the human size and noticeably harder to beat.

In Silent Hill 4, you're trapped in your apartment and the only way to go "out" is a portal to a creepy reality with Ghosts and Monsters in your typical Survival Horror way. Everytime you return to your Room, your health restore automaticly and you can organize your inventory. However, after the fisrt half of the game, the Ghosts from the Other World can invade your room and even kill you, unlees you use specific items to cast them out.
