The unresolved XIII cliffhanger is to this day the one that hurts the most.
I couldn't believe that a game so amazing was not being confirmed for a sequel.
The comics continue the story!

The remake makes me appreciate the original game more.
True I wish the og was on ps4/5 cause I want to play it again
Now I feel like playing the original one after watching this badly made remake.
I know. Fucking pisstake!
A relative of mine gifted me a ton of CIB original Xbox games including XIII. After this video, definitely looks like it's still gonna hold on to its value. lol
Indeed. It´s far better than the version of 2020
Not really sure who was asking for a redo of a remake but maybe people just love Adam West. I certainly do
If a sequel ever miraculously comes out, he'll be dearly missed.
well I just kinda want a way to run the original. it looks good enough. I don't get the point of the remake but last time i tried to run the original it was.. it didn't want to run like at all.
Lol that breaking bad intro was great
"Hey, _errand boy_ , why don't you fetch me another cigar?"
@@lasskinn474 I own a PS2 copy, you can have it for a PS5.
Friendly reminder for people to check out the "What Happened?" episode on this game.
TL:DR - scumbag studio manager picked up the contract to do the remake despite the studio developers not at all being qualified for such a thing. This combined with a lot of the original game's files simply being completely lost, lead to them essentially needing to figure out how to develop a game of this size on the fly.
man. that would explain so much.
@EasterBurn definitive edition moment
And then they double dipped and tasked the studio with the Stubbs The Zombie remake as well
@@killingtimeonline thankfully I don't think they did Stubbs after that. ASPYR ended up doing it themselves.
That "lost files" excuse doesn't even cut it for me. How hard is it to just decompile the original release, if these original files are legitimately "lost?"
I will give the new devs this.
They tried fixing this awful mess.
It still doesn't look that good, but I give them credit for trying.
I agree with you. I was surprised seeing the video title on my feed. Did not expect them to try and patch up this mess.
and they should thank their consumers for beta testing their game at launch lol
Blame management, not the devs. They were tasked with creating a large project that the management team never should have taken on.
It's kind of like making DLC for Rambo: The Video Game, I'm impressed... But why?
Trying that’s a laugh.
The biggest problem with this remake is that I've never played the original and id rather play the original then a remake
Actually tried to play it and in some places the original is just frustrating.

You should always play the original before any remake.
Me too ! I tried the original on emulator and it plays kinda clunky but I wanted to play this when I was young and was praying this would be good
@@gmorgcyborg it is on steam.
it dosent make sense to me how it was so hard to remake this game in the first place, even with the background information its absurd
exactly. literally all they had to do was giving it higher resolution textures and maybe some other modernisations and maybe even some extra content and thats it. the only way different graphics could have worked would be, if they found out a way to make it look even more 2d like a comic. that would have been fun too. but this remake tried to make things different where nobody even complained? its weird.
@@Mr.Marbles Well unfortunately they couldn't simply do all that because the original game source code was lost meaning the game had to be rebuilt from scratch in a new engine. Oh yeah, don't forget covid-19 was happening as well.
Look up Matt McMuscle's Wha Happun on the game to get the full story. Long-story short, the original developer's director was a godddamn charlatan who did nothing but make promises to publishers his team was not equipped to deliver on.
They hired off the bat new out of university devs to make the game, no one on the team was experienced at making something to this scale.
@@chrisossu2070 i saw that and it really just surprised me that everything that couldve gone wrong went wrong when it so easily couldve not lmao
For me, it really feels that the cel-shaded aesthetic really goes best in the less shader intensive, blocky models of "PS2 era" graphics. Having relatively flat and simplisitc lighting system necessitates artists to be incredibly mindful on making their handrawn texture works appealing in multiple ranges(simpler bilinear and trilinear texture filtering where the norm back then). And back then, the line works where not achieved by some post-processing effect, but by making a buffed-up, black-filled copy of a single model, then reverse-draw it(as in, draw those copies "inside out"). Incredibly crude, and yeah, doubling all models' polygon count is incredibly unoptimized. So most games utilizing the style even go with just adding the cel-shading and the lineworks ONLY into the relevant objects and characters.
But this approach oddly lends itself the naturalistic effect where visually relevant stuff in a given scene, like enemy characters and active/interactable objects, visually pops out against background stuff, giving you a not-so-subtle cue. And given that they are actually part of the model, the lineworks' thickness goes in hand with the range of an object, the closer objects, most notably, weapons in first person view, have thicker lineworks, while farther objects have less. Besides XIII, most of my best examples where japanese games of that time, Naruto Ultimate Ninja PS2, Dragonball Z infinite World, and of course, one of the best known example of the style; Jet Set Radio.
Now, for anyone who got through my rant, here's something really interesting. Anyone curious about getting into the OG XIII, I recommend getting the Opaquit patch; xiii.opaquit.com/downloads.php
It's essentially a fan patch that further does minor fixes on some missed bugs and glitches in the campaign, more optimization and compatibility stuff for modern OS(like, more widescreen HD resolution options for one), and my favorite additions; mutators(it's an unreal 2 engine after all), allowing more custom MP gameplay tweaks like custom player maxhealth, custom weapon spawns on maps, modified jump height, etc...and some more custom maps for MP. Also yeah, the guys that created that patch are also apparently hosting some online servers so having that patch also re-enables online play functionality, but I'm not really into that.
Oh yeah, for those not in the know--and I find it incredibly weird that so many people who covers OG XIII isn't mentioning this; That game has offline-MP/botmatch support out-of-the-box. Available on all maps and gamemodes. One of the things why I personally love and keep coming back to that game.
Somebody pin this comment to the top.
It's not just the polygon count. The outlines here are much thinner, the textures aren't made in the comic book style at all, and the shadows are too soft.
Thanks 👍
U probs have but play the fear effects from psone similar reasoning tho it's a fucker of a game looks good use of motion fx on the pre rendered stuff aswell
@@masontrevelyan2254 Oh I haven't played those. And I only became aware of it somewhere in 2013(read up on some gaming article list site). I might get around to check those games out if I got the time.
I'm thoroughly convinced by now that XIII is one of the last games that ever needed any kind of remake. A nice, well-polished remaster for modern consoles would have sufficed but it sucks the original source code and assets were lost or whatever.
A remaster would have been awesome.
And weirdly, some of the best remasters were made without the source code. Bluepoint games apparently reverse engineered some of their remasters from a retail game disc.
@@WH250398 Square Enix rebuilt the first KH game from scratch because they lost the assets years ago. Aside from a few minor qol improvements, looks exactly like an HD version of the original 2002 game. Labeled as a remaster but actually a ground up remake, graphically faithful to the ps2 original.
Too bad they can't be bothered putting that kind of effort into other remasters. The FF8 one had the main character's signature gimmick not work properly during his various ultimate attacks. The input indication onscreen doesn't actually match the required input window in the HD version, apparently because the battle animations and menus run at a different frame rate.
On one hand they went to incredible lengths to faithfully recreate something, on the other they somehow fucked up the battle mechanics of a turn based game and ruined the most iconic element of the game in the process.
@@zeroattentiongaming820 Man that is impressive! Just wish they left the Destiny Islands music the way it was, because that's the only remixed track I don't like.
The PS2/GameCube/Xbox/Dreamcast era was the best for gaming, so many new IPs and developers trying new ideas. It was cheaper to produce games so developers were more open to try things.

either that or you need dosbox to run them, that's where things get ugly and annoying
@@zXPeterz14 this what actually they planned to do, but all the assets were lost, so it was easier to make a remake. Full history of development is on "What happened?" to XIII episode if you're interested

Instead of a remake, they should've made a sequel.
Called it XIII-2 or something

Considering how badly the remake went.... It's safe to say that of they made an original game it would have been much worse.
Or a remaster maybe?

@@YourChannel-r4v there's room for remasters remakes. As long as they, you know, actually are warranted and improve upon antiquated games. Companies like Sony lately just want to remaster actually still modern games just for profit.
If they did this one right from the beginning, I definitely feel it would be warranted. The original is a bit archaic by today's standards and it didn't sell well.
Videogames in 2022 are like watching a chemist blow up their own lab You'd think they'd understand what chemicals do what by this point in time and yet every time we are left with an explosion and a promise the debris will be swept away.
It reminded me of the case of Carmageddon, in 2014 Carmageddon Reincarnation was released and was buggy mess with awful score. Later developers pulled Reincarnation from the stores and released Carmageddon Max Damage, same game but fixed
Yeah Reincarna had pretty long loading times, otherwise it worked OK for me. Well draw distance was ass too. Max Damage also added some cars but yeah, it was basically the same but with better performance. I was surprised too they pulled it off like that. EDIT: then the carma brand was sold to someone else
Kinda wish they just polished the broken shit and gave us a 4k version
Gaming has come to the point where you pay 60$ to 70$ to play the early access version
(being marketed as the full release), and if you're smart you wait 6 months to a year and pay 30$ for the (hopefully) completed game.
PSA! The original & classic version is currently on sale on Steam, sure it's dated, but with a couple of tweaks to the ini file you can have it looking sharp and in widescreen
XIII classic will always be in my heart but not this remake
@don't be surprised I hate you
Sounds like all this game ever needs is the original game with a few patches that support modern OSes and hardware. Because part of the point of highly stylized art is that it doesn't call for a "remake".
A spy theme comic book styled FPS is too cool of an idea to let die.
Do the patches and updates also apply to the console versions?
My parents were cleaning up their house and they found my old xbox. I had this game but found it so hard at that time I gave up after a few levels. I'm excited to give it another try now I'm an adult.

Seeing them flounder so hard with this remake when the original game was so good just hurts. They should have finally made a proper follow up that included a basic remaster of the original. Shame.
I think they lost the code for the original so they couldn't do a basic remaster of the game.

For someone who played the original multiple times as a kid, I was extremely disappointed in the remake. Still beat the game but never touched it again. Im glad the update has made it playable and a lot better. Compared to the original It’ll never come close though.
I straight up never buy games on day one anymore. (Recent exception being Elden Ring which is turned out great regardless, but even that improved and fixed a bunch of issues much later).
I just wishlist it and wait a couple of years check their state and then might try an extended demo or get them on sale
Lol Elden ring is garbage and shits on everything good about the original Dark Souls, it’s the most normie tier Bloodborne, DS3 copy paste job ever, and you normies Eat. It. UP!
Pretty much. If you have any patience there's little reason to buy games on launch. It'll be better and cheaper later.
Could you imagine telling your childhood self playing PS2, "Enjoy good western games while they last, sonny Jim, because they will only get worse. Pretty soon, they're even going to forget how to finish them."
The thing is, the modern "indie" scene is now about as big and similar in quality to the games of that era. It's just that AAA mainstream games are so expensive that 1. Only sure bets are made. 2. They're made under sweatshop conditions where the devs probably haven't had a good night's rest in years
@@Langtw 3. Mismanagement. It is always number three because this is the reason you have number one and number two. It's people who aren't hired for the right reasons making calls that are completely outside of their depth, aptitude, and expertise.
are there no sound settings in the game?
Re-downloading it now, was met with an update so we'll see how this goes.
It astounds me how well the original game has held up in terms of its graphical style and sound design. It's just as surprising that the remake completely missed those two aspects of what made the original game special. Here's hoping we'll see a proper remake someday, but so long as the original game is still available it seems as if it provides the superior experience.
thankfully they haven't done that same dirty move that Rockstar did to push their shitty remasters of the original 3D GTA trilogy. I don't know why many still fall for the "remake" trend when the vast majority are soulless cashgrabs, and even the better made ones miss certain aspects like art direction or sound design in favour of updated graphics.
This really hammers home that companies have no obligation to preserve art. The original was a pioneer in cel-shaded aesthetic in video games. If it weren't for physical copies and emulations, it would have been entirely lost.
My biggest pet peeve with ironsights is when they actively affect the shooting when you're not using it.
Personally, Ironsights should only be there to help assist aim for more precise shots and not effect the shooting at all (Serious Sam 3 and 4's Desert Eagles are a perfect example of this)
I loved this game so much, I still remember playing it on PS2 and loving every minute of it, its too bad they screwed up the remake so badly.
what game is 15:24? it looks so familiar but i can't remember it
im playing it now again, and its not great, the enemies seem to detects me even when I Can't even see them. Seems like the lush environment is just added over top meaning the enemies can't see the new environment
A simple fix to the shooting would be to have ADS and shooting from the hip have the same level of accuracy. There's a few games that've done that, but I'm blanking on their names right now. But yeah - if they tightened the crosshairs, worked around the same movement values of the original, they'd be getting closer to the 7/10 I know this remake could be. 'Cause for them to score any higher, a more or less complete re-remake would be needed, imo. New assets, completely remade cutscenes, and an art director who could more closely capture the look of the original comics - etc. And with all that considered, they'd likely have to at least *double* the game's total budget up 'til now lol
Yeah, in Borderlands 3 hip firing is so accurate I hardly ever aim down sights
I bought the OG Xbox version of this from an old computer shop in a small town. It's still in shrink wrap and cost me like 5e xDD
Totally worth it |D
XIII is a fine little shooter with timeless graphics. It never needed a remake. If I ever want to play XIII again, I will just play it again.
thing is, these remakes prey on people who either want to play the game again but simply don't have the hardware anymore (and are not willing to or can't emulate the game) or people who want to play it for the first time, but due to the fact that it's an older game, they'd prefer to have an "updated" version with space age graphics and mechanics for their brand new console or rig, instead of going through the hassle of seeking out a patch (which apparently is too much).
Speaking as someone who just beat the original game for the first time (GOG version), I would not want to play it again. It was fun enough, but it had a lot of headaches I don't want to subject myself to again, mainly the graphics - there was no way to adjust the brightness, and there were plenty of times when the environment was so dark I literally could not see where I was supposed to be going. A couple times I even fell to my death because I couldn't see the pit. The checkpoint system was frustrating (I have nothing against checkpoint systems in general, just the way this game did it was frustrating), the menus had problems, navigating your inventory had problems, etc. Fun, but too many little headaches that I don't want to play it again.
I know remakes and remasters are basically an easy way for publishers to make a quick buck, but honestly, I'm grateful for them (if they're done well). Maybe it's because I'm getting old, but it's becoming increasingly rare for me to find modern games that I can actually sit down and play all the way through. I'm tired of giant open world games full of meaningless sidequests, I'm tired of third person action games that force you to slowly walk forward while looking at some big set piece, and I'm tired of games releasing with "roadmaps" and having to wait a year to get the complete experience.
These days I mostly just replay old games I love and the occasional indie game. I've also been catching up on old games I missed out on, and remasters/remakes make that even easier. I don't really have the space to keep a bunch of older consoles or a CRT (much as I would love that), and I'm too damn lazy to deal with emulation. The last time I tried to use PCSX2 it was an absolute nightmare. Half the games I tried didn't work, and the ones that did took a lot of fiddling. Maybe it's gotten better in recent years but I just can't be bothered.
This game has better rag doll physics than Saints Row
OK, I might give this a chance now. I'll still play the original, but hearing this remake being repaired as is might give me hope.
What I hate about modern game devs is they can't seem to put in details that existed 20 years ago, and even worse is when they are remaking a game and they can see the exact details needed and still fail or don't care.
Same with modern Rockstar, it makes you lose all faith in their ability to make a game better than they could, or it makes you wonder just how good games could be, if we had those old devs back.
I don't think it's about the devs. the gaming industry today is not the same as it was two decades ago. business practices and the ways in which games are made have changed drastically over the years. it's no longer an outrage to release a broken game that will be patched later, it's expected, and though many complain, they'll still give their money to these companies. graphics and so called fidelity (and microtransactions for useless cosmetics or pay-to-win bs) are over emphasized over actual story or gameplay, so it's no surprise that a classic like XIII has been treated like shit.
What is the game at 15:17 ?
I think your weapons changed in the OG but only if like a big cut scene where you're off to somewhere else happens right after.

I hate how this remake takes a photorealistic approach. Part of the original game’s charm was in its cel-shaded look and cartoony presentation.
Can’t you just adjust the volume levels in the settings?
On Steam the original XIII is available for $1.50 USD while the Remake is $30. I still have the demo of the original game from Computer Gaming World magazine and was into the gameplay and design but I was a kid at the time whose limited money went to other things.

Can you get the original anywhere?
I'm hoping the 13 the remake continues to get more life improvements especially the cutscenes rendered as animated panels like in the 1st game & the option to fire both from the hip & down sight plus extra attention to the levels so they retain the comic art look of the original game including the musical scores n sfx. It hurts to think this great game even wasn't hailed as specially as some other games that came before it. Very underrated game man.
I have a question: Are you gonna review Metal: Hellsinger game?
It didn't happen after *every* level change, but I have my Amazon review of the original game to look back on and, yes, it did not-infrequently pull the "Hey, you know that rocket-launcher ammunition you were squirreling away last mission? *YOINK*!" trick between levels.
the headshot animation looks so weird, it's just zooming in the face 3 times
Even if it’s not great, I’m glad it’s at least playable. The original is one of my all time favorites. The story mixes the tone of Jason Bourne and the campier X-Files stuff, which is two of my favorite franchises. On top of that David Duchovny voices XIII, and Adam West is great as always. The cell shaded graphics are still beautiful to this day, and the music is amazing as you’ve pointed out here.
If nothing else, hopefully this will keep the original game alive and a better developer will pick up the IP for a sequel (or a spiritual successor)
I'd say it's good now, it's a decent remake if not great.
99.9% sure the og game resets weapons in between levels - I kinda liked it, each level felt a bit more unique because you only had a certain fraction of the games arsenal at your disposal
If they keep improving the game I might grab it, I never played the original but it always looked cool
the original is dirt cheap right now
