It's okay, I didn't even know it was a remake and I still have the original installed.
Also you can buy it on GOG where most old games are better preconfigured (or don't lack fucking SETUP executables as in case of the classic DOOM games, and expansions are included in the base game, as for Quake I/II and DOOM II's Master Levels)
Except Serious Sam 1 (I'm referring to TFE and TSE combined), because it uses an older version of the game that still uses Gamespy and has no native widescreen support (and even if you do set widescreen through the PersistentSymbols.ini file, it will cause the weapon to appear closer to the screen than intended, making a big chunk of the weapon viewmodels appear offscreen, or in other words, the weapon field of view doesn't increase to compensate for widescreen)

@@kakophonien6514 tbf I never played the OG half life and actually enjoyed black mesa, actually propelled me to replay HL2 and both HL2 episodes. But I can dig it if you didn't like it.
@paula maybe in a few years I'll dig it up and play it. I think the recent update to black Mesa told the story respectfully and was an acceptable substitute for to tell me the story of the original HL. It was just too long of a game for me to want to attempt to play the original at the momebt.

Holy shit, the 2020 one looks worse. I don't think I've seen a game with more poorly animated cutscenes.
The original was made by a team of talented artists who worked hard to capture the feel of "Comic book noir" in their FPS, that used the visual medium and onomatopoeia to enhance gameplay- seeing where enemies are by looking at the "tap tap tap" of footsteps through the wall, getting a heads up of a sniper or RPG user popping up in a window, sneaking around during a cutscene without pulling you out of the action, by having the cutscene play out in a window and giving you a timetable to sneak through before the people in the cutscene spot you. This seems like something made by some gaming sophomores who didn't really grasp the original other than it was Cel Shaded and had some comic book elements and instead thought "oh, we'll go hi-res, and everyone will love it." The enemies and characters look not just like fortnite, but like Dead Island NPCs, with a kind of Ken and Barbie level of detail.

@@Gruntvc They’re all pretty cheap. Ended up loving the game so much I bought every console version and the PC. If you’re going to buy it your best bet is the Xbox or Gamecube versions for Deathmatch, as they both have 4 player capability. The Xbox has an extra level the Cube doesn’t have IIRC.
This review is, point-for-point, exactly how I feel about the remake - even the comment about the character models looking like they're from Fortnite.
It feels as though the studio focused too much on overhauling the graphics and then barely remembered to tack on comicbook influences. For half of the time that I was playing the remake, I couldn't tell if certain cutscenes were removed intentionally or because it failed to load in properly.
I was hoping this remake would do great and then we'd get the sequel we have been waiting for.
I'll have to keep on dreaming.

Wow. I was kinda curious about this “remake” because me and my friends used to love the original game (played so much splitscreen deathmatch in The Hunt game mode).
Normally, I don’t get too hung up on petty changes to a remake but you actually did a great job of highlighting how almost all the original stylistic elements were somehow made objectively worse.
Ironically, the original XIII is "inspired" by the Bourne Identity Book
_"inspired"_ insofar as the author started reading The Bourne Identity and then gave up about two chapters in and just made it up as he went along for the rest of his story.

No it isn't. Hell, the Bourne book series is only _now_ 40 years old.
When XIII (the game) came out and introduced american audiences to the series, a lot of people got confused because of the very early similarities between the stories. The author of XIII very clearly drew some small inspirations for his story but it obviously wasn't an attempt at an adaptation.
It has been probably 15 years but I think I remember reading that the original author of the series even admitted that he had started reading Bourne Identity but never finished it until well after his series was successful.
So it was kind of like a writing prompt, I guess.

For those who didn't read the comic, I'm gonna spoil like hell.
The whole XX's conspiracy is only a small part of the story... XIII's story dive into KKK shenanigans, south american revolution stuff, CIA/NSA corrupt boss, italo-american mob, mexican drug cartel, IRA and even early XXth century italian mob vs irish mob and the bloody mexican revolution. It even dive into the vietnam war without openly naming it.
And that's only the first comics serie. There is actually a new one going on, linking XIII to british royal familly and the mayflower.
Also, the continuity of the series is kinda fucked up. Early issues of the first series are clearly set into the 80's, in a post vietnam era. But it kinda dive into a more 90 esthetic at the end... and the new series is basically happening during the Obama era.
Man, this one hurt. I had such high hopes wen I was surprised by the news they were making it in the first place. I nearly bought it upon release, but, this being the modern times, waited a bit to see if it would be worth the hype and also, worth my money. I'm sad to see you had to suffer for it, but I appreciate that I don't have to.

I saw the game on the PS Store and thought, "Oh, it's ported to the PS4 now, that's cool." Didn't even realise it was a remake, didn't really think it needed one either.
I'm so disappointed to see how the remake shaped up to be. I wasn't looking forward to many games this year but this was one of them. So saddened to see this.

These guys had half the job already done: voice acting, music, sound, story etc. I'm sure most players would simply prefer a remaster instead of a remake. I'd love to replay the original on my ps4, I remember how good the AI of the enemies in multiplayer was. I'm planning on getting this one, but when the price drops. Also for the love of god, give us a sequel.
This game lasted exactly 40 minutes on my PC before I asked the kind folks at GOG.com to refund me.
I had this feeling this looked off from the first reveal trailer, Doesnt really capture that same vibe the original "In the comic" feeling XIII had back in 2003......

The greatest thing that can be said about this game is that it brings awareness to the original.
Fun fact: in the U.K., the original game actually received higher sales than the remake in its launch week. I repeat: a 20 year old game on steam sold more than the brand new one available on all modern platforms
1:05 that's why I love Cel-Shaded games. No matter how much time passes, the games will always for the most part look pretty good. Just look at Sly Cooper and Okami.

@@Ponaru Masterpiece is relative but It's a very good game. The graphics were impressive at the time but that's not it. It's the storyline and characters above all. And the music is amazing too.
I really want to slit my own throat when I hear "masterpiece" used to describe something especially when it's followed by gripe. It's such an overused term.
It wasn't perfect, but the visuals really carried it. To remove or tone them down would highlight the errors of the game.
It was mediocre shooter with boring gameplay, forgettable story and lethargic voice acting from Duchovny. The only memorable thing about it was it's cel shaded graphics.
I pirated this game, and I didn't even bother installing it.

Fun fact: Mouse acceleration was made for hardware drivers to make it easier to flick your mouse all the way across the screen without running out of space on your pad. They achieved this usually by accelerating the speed by two connected y=mx lines with m as the multiplier. The first would be a reasonable rate for more precise movements, and the second a steep vertical factor that kicks in as soon as you surpass a certain speed. This was never meant for gaming, but it can be useful if tuned in a more logical way. Similar to the programmable curves in the console versions of Titanfall 2 and Modern Warfare, some people have had luck with an exponential multiplier using custom drivers that gradually kicks in as you turn faster, allowing for both precise aiming and quick turns

The game's SAVE system was absolute garbage.
I still remember playing that game on PC when it was first released all those years ago.
The games SAVE checkpoints were HORRIBLE ... to put it nicely.
Oh, now I remember why I did not finished the original. The checkpoints, my GOD the checkpoints. And this is in 03 when waaaay much less games used checkpoints on the PC, making the issue literally a deal breaker.
The beginning clip alone had me audibly going "Oh no..."
Glad the original is available on steam now though.

He will likely still enjoy the remake. This is the guy that recommended legendary and Red alliance. Two of the worst fps games I have played.
@@Largentina. Honestly play one of the games I just said and tell me that there not objectively bad or in some area's almost unplayable. Legendary has a 100% chance of a bug at the end of the game that causes the player to clip out of the map and die. The only way to finish the game is to go into the files and mess with the fps cap so the last level loads. That's if you can force yourself to play that long. Red alliance on the other hand is mostly functional but still suffers from awful level design and the worst feeling guns in any fps.

@@Largentina. It was Jarek. I bought legendary off his recommendation in the video. Another person had told me to play it but as the game had a mixed score on steam I decided to check if it was worth playing and he said it was. So I bought it and fair to say it wasn't very good. Whilst the concept was cool everything else was a mess, bad weapons, lack of colour in the visuals, a bland story with characters who seemed to have no personality, a lack of proper options menu, annoying music, endless bugs, bad level design. Overall sloppy at best. I didn't watch for a while. About a month after playing legendary I found Red alliance on steam for a cheap price, id never heard of it but it had a very HL2 looking trailer so I thought "Hey, I'll give it a shot." Bad move. Red Alliance still stands as worst game I have played. Everything wrong with an FPS is in red alliance. A few months after playing it Jarek did a video on it where he looked over the many problems with game as if they were mild little quirks rather than just really sloppy design. I am sure Jarek's a nice guy but he reviews need to be look at as entertainment rather than something to base a buy off. Whilst I do buy games based on reviews from Gman sometimes I won't be doing the same for Jarek as I think he is way to lenient when it comes to bugs and design problems.

I loved reading these comics as a kid. There is a huge mural about this comic in a street in brussels, used to walk passed it alot when i went to work. Never knew they made a game about it.
I hate how the remastered cutscene leads to the ambulance falling into a shallow dip in the ground instead of a legitimate canyon.
Don't know why they didn't bring back the cut content from the original, like dog enemies for example. (Yes, really, they were supposed to be in the original.) I mean, if its a remake, then there is gotta be some restored cut content.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but Mouse Acceleration originally existed to help those with rubber ball mice from the old days of computer gaming; nowadays it's a novelty option which I can only imagine benefits people using those ball-mice you rotate to use.

In all fairness, Mr. Sam Fisher clone in the front cover of this looks more like the original comic book character than the model in the old game. The same can be said for Jones. I really like the classic game, though. It's the reason I read the comic later, which is awesome as well. Too bad they fucked up the remake.

You are speaking facts it is just sad how some of these game companies don't put the same passion and effort into their work that previous did like my childhood games some of them just can't be remade to perfection because these people feel like they know what we like when we told them when we bought the game millions of copies sold and I mean this game wasn't one of the greatest but to me and my childhood this was and time splitters the series and we still haven't got a remake on that and I'm praying that that comes out good when it does because this is crazy how destroyed this game looks for it to be something from the year 2020 kind of like cyberpunk on PS4 what is wrong with these people we got to stop allowing these people take our money I mean they refund people for cyberpunk but it's still trash they're selling us trash great video explain why

Demake is often used for remaking a game on worse hardware than it originally ran on or in a style imitating retro hardware

Damn bro I hated it, the contrast in that game is so intense that I thought the first level was after a sunset or very early in the morning, the last levels are almost pitch black and I cannot count how many times I got stuck in the prision because I didn't knew there was a door in a shadow, and the fov is the worse, most of the time you are in hallways and interiors and this shit zooms the fuck in like wearing binoculars is better than glasses

Played this game as a teen and I loved it, when I heard about the remake I was actually really excited but, the fact they took away most of the cell shading effects and all the comic book effects plus cut scenes. Like WHAT? Why would you take out the comic book stuff on a game based on a comic book, absolute insanity on their part. The new cut scenes and character animations look horrid.
The original was a really good game. Also, XIII was voiced in the spanish version by Ramón Langa, the most badass voice actor in History.
For those who dont know Ramon Langa, he has been Bruce Willis's voice actor in Spain for so many years, and honestly had improved every Willis acting, from Die Hard series to the Shyamalan trilogy.

so, uh has anyone noticed that Jason Fly(the protagonist) sometimes has and sometimes doesn't have the white line of hair on the sides? it can change like 3 times a cutscene, one shot he has white strips, the other he doesnt, and another he has it again, its driving me crazy
