I heard about a guard who worked with my dad who was stabbed 35 with a brutal hole especially on his cheek where you could see his teeth even with his mouth closed. He survived. Prison shanks come in a variety of shapes and sizes but structurely mostly can only handle superficial damage. The shanks often need to be as small and concealable but that doesn't help their effectiveness much.

Otherwise, PC is a mix of police/LEOs, CHOMOS, ex-STG members & those who are being threatened/extorted due to some incident with a cellie or other inmate (such as your cell getting blamed for running a store & you being innocent, is just a small example). We had guys with chomo charges all throughout general population. But the STG activity I was at wasn't too prominent (at a State men's facility of all-security levels). But it might a lot different in the Federal BOP.

The fact that Chauvin is still alive after 22 stabs makes me suspect the "knife" wasn't too long. It probably was tough to stab far enough to hit anything vital, and it was probably mostly stabs instead of long cuts. Luckily for Chauvin, the knife must not have nicked any, or at least not a lot of, arteries or other vital spots. Either he got lucky or protected himself well, or the medical team was fast to respond and did an amazing job, or both.
