Same with the lighting. Whether it's the scene or specifically on a characters model, some manage to be nice improvements, and others are suddenly missing shadows/details from natural lighting, leading to an almost plastic look
There’s a lot of little choices that I’m not sure on. Particularly in the desert areas… lots of the “lush green” has been emphasized, and the yellow/ochre was toned down. But… isn’t it supposed to look yellow? Isn’t that filter what gives an area its visual identity?
Yeah, I can see the added foliage, but some of that looks like a filter was switched off more than anything. In some parts, I would expect more muted colors. Foliage will look less colorful to our eyes when light is blocked by trees.
I'm not sure the pop-in like at 6:50 is worth the extra weed either. It seem a mixed bag overall. Some is better some is worse. The only thing I'd prefer throughout is probably the water. "nice water!" 😹
@epmcgee Just keep a look at the grass on the timestamp. I mean.. What's the point of increased draw when there is more pop-in right under your nose instead.
Just one quick suggestion for what it's worth, put the old or "worse" looking version on the left side and the newer or "best looking" one on the right side imo, it somehow feels more "natural" comparing and analysing them like this
Same here. I wanted to replay the game after 4 years, and the remastered version came out at the right time. Horizon series are my favorite modern games along with TLOU series and Skyrim.
The lighting in the original was very special, they explained that in an interview: they wanted to create a look that always feels like sunset/sundown, which was inspired by nature documentaries as far as i remember. This created a stunning look with warm and very strong colors. They removed that in the remake. Plus they could have used that possibility to change at last the major complaint of many players: not enough weapon slots. A second weapon wheel would be such a great addition to the game, because at some point you just start to not use many weapons because it's not fun to change the weapon wheel everytime before a fight.

Yes, that is totally true, and that is due to global illumination and indirect light, but if you doesn't have raytracing Ambient occlusion, it kills all the shadows. so it looks plane dull and oversaturated, there are not contact shadows neither on models

The decay and pollen isn’t in Zero Dawn because it takes place earlier in the year and the biosphere hasn’t started breaking down yet, it’s not an issue with the remaster it’s a fact of the world.
This is one of those remakes that is made with love, for the love of the game by the developers, wanting to bring up the experience of the game to the level of Forbidden West, you can tell that they truly love their game and want us to see it in it's best light. and just £10 for all the work they have put into this remaster is not much to ask at all. It's just a pity that Sony got greedy and hiked up the price (that had been reduced for well over a year) right after the remaster announcement, to cash in on this.
6:49 the new plants look so much worse I'm surprised John didn't mention how they are basically glowing this obnoxious green color. Otherwise nice comparison of course, but the foliage color is crazy, looks like a bug.
I think it’s the sun going through the leaves. Shortly after that time they’re walking through an area with those plants and they seem to be normal when looking at them from above or when behind a wall. Also the trees show this with bright green only on the edges.

They went so hard into trying to make it a collectible game for upgrades, it made normal combat worse. They way the bots would leap on top of you from across the screen was lame too. @@TamTu The hints they dropped at the end of FW that the next foe is some disembodied pool of ideas didn't bode well.
I'm not fan of fluo green vegetations like at 5:00, I définitely prefer the original DA version.
Yeah, I feel like they mostly just turned plants bright green and called (that part) a day
I'm not sure the pop-in like at 6:50 is worth the extra weed either.
They turned the green ferns and trees into neon lights. 😂
Just one quick suggestion for what it's worth, put the old or "worse" looking version on the left side and the newer or "best looking" one on the right side imo, it somehow feels more "natural" comparing and analysing them like this

Agreed!
Yeah. This game was already epic. Nog it's just perfect to do the new game plus. Just amazing game !!
Warm colors? Did u see the video all the way through? Look at the canyon and dessert scenes, it's still there
That was just PR

Do those plants at 6:49 not look a bit flat in the remaster compared to the original? Like the subsurface scatterning and shadows present in the original are missing completely
Yes, that is totally true, and that is due to global illumination and indirect light, but if you doesn't have raytracing Ambient occlusion, it kills all the shadows. so it looks plane dull and oversaturated, there are not contact shadows neither on models
They look over saturated and almost neon. Also I thought the actual plant assets themselves looked worse In the remaster, especially the ferns
3:14 Editing error here where the same line of dialogue from the script is stated twice: "Beyond image quality differences, however, these three modes are all roughly the same.
Personally, the quality in performance mode is strong enough I recommend this mode over the others."
I am curious what Nixxes did to improve the PC port further now that they get to fully redo alot more of the game.
Take a look at the PC trailer for the remaster. Immediately you can see that background characters run at full FPS instead of half or quarter.
Clearly seen at 4:39, the Proctor's beard is not moving in the wind, and his mouth is glowing like it's made out of frosted glass. This issue of the mouth doesn't seem to be confined to just him, but to many incidental characters as well.
Also, at 10:42 you can see Bahavas having a lot of issues with his sleeve clipping.
At 13:55, you can see Aloy's eyelashes disappear when she turns her head.
18:17: That is draw-dropping.
I noticed this immediately! I instantly couldn't get on board no matter how lush the plants are
Poor Rost looks like wax figure in this remaster
As someone who just got a PS5 last year, my last console was PS2. I just started playing horizon and this remaster will do wonders for me.

Horizon series is much more than graphics : gameplay, combat system, lore, story, characters are second to none.

The foliage looks more overly bright and artificial in the remaster
If I remember correctly, the decay started after the events of Zero Dawn.
The red pollen never existed in zero dawn, it came with forbidden west
The decay and pollen isn’t in Zero Dawn because it takes place earlier in the year and the biosphere hasn’t started breaking down yet, it’s not an issue with the remaster it’s a fact of the world.
It's not "missing" the red pollen didn't exist in the original game.

1 - I didn't like how they turned Aloy into a whiner. Her interactions with Silens were cringe worthy.
2- The "invincible shield" mcguffin simply shows the writers couldn't figure out how to make the Zenith a credible threat. Requiring Silens to come up with his own mcguffin to defeat the shield was more lame writing.
3 - Aloy diving head first into doing chores for a native dictator, to try to put down another dictator (Regalla) who didn't agree with the first one was lame.
4 - The combat was nerfed compared to ZD. They went so hard into trying to make it a collectible game for upgrades, it made normal combat worse. They way the bots would leap on top of you from across the screen was lame too.
The environments were great for the most part. I enjoyed the exploration part of the game. The writing and plot had none of the power of ZD. It was like fan-fic.
@@quademasters249 Note that I didn't state anything in regards to the narrative choices in HFW. I agree with you on some parts, but from a game dev and tech perspective on what happened under the hood, I'm optimistic.
I'm sure they've had a lot feedback on the story and narrative, nothing to do but to see and wait and see what happens on that end. Overall I'm glad that the total gaming and visual experience will be consistent at least in the future.
@@TamTu The hints they dropped at the end of FW that the next foe is some disembodied pool of ideas didn't bode well.
My take on what happened with FW is that story was originally going to be all Regalla and the civil war. Then when they realized that wasn't enough, they patched in the silly "rich people are bad" plot with the invincible shield BS. Because the rich enemies were never really fleshed out.
It smells of a "decisions made by committee" game. It was full of things that made no sense, that had to be there for the plot to happen.
