When I got my new embroidery machine and took classes with it, the instructor suggested turning the metallic thread spool upside down, which she said helped to avoid shredding and breaking. I haven't yet tried using metallic thread, but if that doesn't work, I will definitely try your tips!
Thanks Deb! I love working with metallic threads and found your tips to be very helpful as they can be tricky to work with sometimes. Friends have laughed at my improvised thread stand but I figure whatever works is the way to go.
Excellent info. Especially putting the thread in the coffee cup instead of on the spindle. I have had many dilemmas heaps of time with my thread Arrghh
Thanks for this video. Thanks for all the tips. I never knew about slowing the speed down. I use metallic thread in many projects to just pop areas. The most important thing is to use a metallic needle!! I am pretty lazy and keep the needle in for the whole projects if using metallic and non metallic threads.
I had a project I did with a neon thread. the feel of the thread is different from my other polyester threads but it is polyester. I had a lot of breakage with it and I was wondering if you have heard of others having problems with neons. Should I apply the same principles as the ones used for metallic thread.
Rebecca Gibb Neon thread is tricky, Rebecca. It doesn't behave the same as metallic, so I don't know that the same tricks will work. We used neon thread in a few Halloween projects and it does break very easy. My guess (and this is just a guess) is that the dying process makes it susceptible for breakage. If I do find a way to stitch easily with it, I'll definitely let you know!
this info help hopefully will help me. I'm new to embroidery and last night i was trying to embroider a piece of craft vinyl with metallic thread and it kept shredding. any help appreciated! thank you. Just subscribed! i also have a youtube channel.
Hi Deb, I tried a FSL design with metallic thread and used that in the bobbin as well, what a mess I had. I don't know if its just my machine or if it is the thread I used. What brand of metallic thread do you use? Maybe my thread is old but that should not matter because its matallic? I want to try this again but not sure if I will. Janet
I have made several of these snow flakes. I have had nesting on a few. I find that the stabilizer isn't snug enough most of the time when this happens. also I now use a thread stand and it helped a lot. I've been told if the thread is old it will break more. Someone suggested misting with water & putting in a ziploc bag just for a while. then take it out to finish drying. I haven't tried it so not sure if it works. Hope this helps. I love all FTL. Good luck
ginger0174 Sometimes they'll curl up when they're soaking in water. Pressing flattens them out, and any excess water-soluble stabilizer left in the thread acts as starch.

Hi Michelle, we have a Brother 6200, a Brother 2500, a Janome 12000, and a Baby Lock Destiny.
why do you press the free standing lace items?
