Thank you both so much! Sounds like the recovery is doing great! When I had my first flareup I was so scared I retore it too but surgeon and said it was extremely unlikely. Ice and turmeric have been very helpful for me as well. Congrats on getting to run! I hope you continue to meet you running goals.
Thanks! How far post op are you?

I just had to say I love how supportive you are of your wife. it's a beautiful thing to see people support one another. All the best to you two
Thank you so much!
Thanks for the update Steven. Great job on your recovery Valan!!! I appreciated your honesty in answering those questions.
Thank you, Sage!
I'm so glad you're recovering well!! You WILL do that 2022 half marathon! Thanks for all the useful information.
Thanks, Kelly!!
So glad you're on the mend, Val. Love the transparency, and I have no doubt this will help other folks out there!
Thank you so much!
Guys you’re absolutely awesome! Your advices are wise and valuable for all of us that goes over the same experience. I’m one of them. I’m happy you getting better! Way to go! Keep us informed. Thank you.
Thank you! Glad this was helpful! Just remember we are not doctors or physical therapists, so be sure to consult your own medical team
A couple who has fun doing videos together stays together 🙃 Val glad you’re running and healing well 🥰
Very true! Thanks, Celine!
Thanks for the update Val. This information is very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
I’m doing physical therapy now and I can relate to thinking that you’ve re-torn the labrum! My physio said it takes around 3 years for your brain to stop having anxiety about the repair! Definitely agree with listening to your body and to rest when you’ve been moving too much. Thank you for the video!
Yep, good info
As someone who will be having this surgery soon, and as an individual who does sports almost daily, this video is inspiring and extremely useful! Thank you!
I’m so glad it was helpful. Best of luck to you!
I have a tear also. Did you have a PT prior surgery? How are you now?
Thank you for sharing your story. I’m waiting on my surgery approval, really looking forward to getting back to my normal activity level. Currently, I can’t even go for walks for more than 10-15 min, stopped running about 4 mo ago which has been a difficult adjustment. Your journey is inspiring, thank you for sharing.
We hope your surgery gets approved quickly! It’s a long journey, but one valan would do again if needed
So glad you're doing so well! 😊💕
Me too!!
This will be so helpful for many people.
I hope so!
Looked good running! Thanks for the update on how the hip is doing
Thanks for following the journey! Good luck to you!
Thanks for sharing!
I had surgery in feb,and I'm slowly getting into running again😄
Glad to hear you are recovering!
Swear I’m dealing with a flare up, along with the paranoia like I retore it. LOL
I have been searching for this exact video for some reassurance that I was all good. Just gotta tell myself It’s just a flare up! Much needed content.
Hope it’s just a flare up!
This is a late comment to a vid thats been out for 3 months but have been eyeballing your channel since i just had FAI surgery (very likely it was FAI that caused my aches at least) and the road to recovery feels a little intimidating. It'll take a long while to regain all the lost strenght in my right leg.
Good to see positive vibes, look forward to hiking long distances again, hopefully pain free when the time comes! :) Gotta be careful not to overdo it both at work and doing what i love most.
Thanks for making this!
Good luck in your recovery, Yuri! Yea definitely take it slow and follow your surgeons advice.
Thanks! Chin up 💪
This is so encouraging! I’m getting the FAI surgery next week and I’m so nervous. I just want to get back running again, so this helps ease the anxiety.
You’ll get there! Valan is close to her first 50km race since surgery
@@UltraTrailSteven WOW! Congrats to her! That’s awesome.
How are you post surgery? Would love to hear!
@@jonathonnowers9757 Well, I am currently training for a half marathon on Thanksgiving day and I am happy to say that I have ZERO pain. Surgery and recovery were both a breeze. I took all medications as prescribed, and I had no pain at all. Physical therapy was great (and it felt soooo gooood to have someone gently move and flex my leg after being sedentary) - all in all, I would give this experience a 10/10 and would easily do it all over again if I had to. I am now running pain free - it's unbelievable! I just did a 6-mile tempo run today and my coach is impressed with my recovery progress. I am very happy. Thank you for asking, and continued wellness to you both!
The questions at the end of the video were really helpful. I have FAI, my bone is also not round and the doctor recommended surgery. I wouldn’t say my pain is that bad. And some days I don’t even notice it. But each year that goes by, I notice that the pain starts a little sooner than it did a few weeks ago and I’m feeling myself lose distance in runs. I’ve been hesitant to get surgery because it looks like others have so much more pain than I do. I have tried Physical Therapy and it’s been really helpful, but I think you’re right. At the end of the day, my bone will cause an impingement and it’s the underlying problem. Until that’s fixed with surgery, I feel like I am just delaying the inevitable with physical therapy.
Yep that’s what led Val to make the choice for surgery.
@@UltraTrailSteven Appreciate that. It's helped me start to prepare for the reality of surgery. Now if only my home didn't have so many dang stairs.🤣
Great videos and thank you for sharing this. Hope Val is feeling much better.
FTYI - My spouse got recently diagnosed with hypertrophic labrum on the right side with possible superior labral tear . She got it through injury after a bathtub fall (:. As of now doc has not suggested surgery but we think he will get there in due course. Few questions :
1. How is Val feeling now. I think it's almost a year now post op...
2. Did they talk about what kind of laberal tear (Superior/ anterior etc..)
2. Were any risks of developing Orthoarthritis discussed post surgery
3. We are exploring non-surgical methods also- did the ice machine and others help prior to surgery in calming things down...NSAIDs/ strength training
4. Did they give any CSI / Lidocaine injections for diagnosis or treatment
I’m so glad these are helpful. We will do a follow up at a year.
1. Val feels a lot better. She is ramping up her mileage now, so she is dealing with a little fatigue as her body adjusts to the mileage.
2. She had an anterior labral hip tear. She received 6 anchors in her surgery.
3. Yes the surgeon discussed arthritis with her. Her PT helped.
4. She did not have the ice machine prior. She was doing strength training up to surgery. Whether it helped or not, we are not sure.
5. No injections.
Best of luck to your spouse!
One week after labral repair
Walking pretty much normal. Had a couple of pedals on exercise bike, but not ready for that just yet.
First physio session on Friday. Interested to understand when you make the incremental increases in exercise load.
Best of luck in your recovery!
Thank you for this! I have a torn and frayed labrum with FAI. I want to avoid surgery but it’s not getting better. Did you try PT to get better prior to surgery?
She opted not to try PT as her surgeon said more than half of people that go through weeks/months of PT still end up getting the surgery. She wanted to just get it done so she could recover and get back to building back up. Good luck to you!
I can't wait to be able to run and squat again. After wearing heels for few hours my hip was killing me for 2 days. I hope I will get the surgery done this year and get it fixed. My other hip is acting up as well. On MRI the tear didn't show, but i have even worse symptoms there so maybe i need to do an arthro mri. Did you have a tear on one hip or both? When recovering, your other hip did not hurt when putting all weight on it?
Valan only had the tear on the one side. She had some discomfort at times in the other hip, but not too bad. Good luck to you!
I’m at at 4 months post op for the same thing for my left hip and it doesn’t feel good. Did yours pop and click or ever go back to popping and clicking after surgery?
No. She never had clicking or popping after the surgery.
Yah I observed that when laying in your stomach will give ur hips a break but nobody told me that probably I learned that thing from this video.
Yeah that was something her PT told her to do. She found it helped a lot!
It’s scary that the impingement causes the tear. I almost want to get a scan of my left hip to know if I’m dealing with two deformities.
Yeah might be worth it in the long run.
My TFL muscle give me a problem which make my it band so thigh and cause stiffness and pain the side of my knee and it’s hard to bent and weak probably the reason until now I can’t walk without crutches.
I would definitely talk to your PT and hopefully they can help with your TFL and stiffness. Valan was very proactive and did the exercises at home at least twice a day.
10 days post op. Not feeling the best but im off the oxy. Sleep is a real problem. Any advice in that department would be much appreciated.
Ibuprofen, melatonin and ice. Hope it gets better!
Are you still feeling any soreness or tightness sitting or working out today?
Sometimes when the weather is rainy she will feel achy, but no.
I need this surgery and I am so scared that it will limit my mobility. I am extremely scared of the recovery especially that after I lost 80 pounds 5 years ago I am very active. Hot yoga, Pilates, bike, hiit training and I am so scared I won’t be able to go back to those
Well Valan has since run multiple ultramarathons, and is training for a 100 mile race. Just trust the process!
Do you use Cpm machine? Hips brace?
No. Valan never used a CPM machine or hip brace. Her surgeon never recommended one.
What was her symptoms before surgery?
Check out the playlist; she’s discussed a few times.

How about traveling? Any issues with long car rides
Yes. She says it was quite uncomfortable in the car for a couple of months
How are you now? Do you have any problem?
She is great! She ran her 50km ultra and has recovered very well with no pain or issues.
ruclips.net/video/pVu3Layq6JA/видео.html
What level of tear did you have and did the doctor support the 1/2 goal marathon goal (whatever timeframe when therapy and training were complete). Reason I am asking is for the concern of arthritis (of course not fixable). Did the ortho say you could do that type distance as long as the recovery and pt was 100% - the concern I have is the impact to the joint after the change in bone structure (reshaping).
This is all relatively new so thank you for the details in the videos. I have surgery in one month, average tear between 1 and 3 O’clock. I’ll ask this question to my ortho but wanted your perspective since it’s another three weeks before I meet with him. I can’t wait to be where you are. Thank you again!
Goodluck to you! Be sure to check out the rest of her videos, and the 1 year update
1 Year Post Op Labrum Repair and FAI Surgery / Running After Hip Surgery
ruclips.net/video/pVu3Layq6JA/видео.html
I’m unsure of what level the tear was. He put I think 6 anchors in 🤷🏼♀️. My surgeon supported my desire to run, but didn’t set any specific time goals. I didn’t tell my surgeon I had a specific time goal frame. I think the biggest take away was to be flexible and follow the running protocol.
So far I’ve completed. 50K and train normally. Every now and then I’ll feel achy in the joint. Arthritis is a possibility, but my surgeon never led me to believe I would make that worse by running. Best of luck for you!
Thank you for responding Valan! It’s so impressive what you have done and I appreciate you sharing. For me, It’s taken seven years to get diagnosed correctly. Since the tear can cause arthritis (at least in my case), I am glad I didn’t do what the first two orthos suggested, which was to continue to run and take inflammatory med. If I had done that at the rate I use to go over those years, the minor arthritis would have been a lot worse probably resulting in not qualify for the labrum repair surgery. It took two MRIs to get this right - first one three years ago, not a blemish but yet the same pain persisted. Got another one a month ago (very strategic slices by this new ortho) and there it was - the labrum tear. I’m 42 now and at retirement, I still want to hit those trails and run, even if it’s just a hard 5 or 10k. I can’t wait to do it again.
Thank you for your videos!
@@sallyirvin4871Sally how are you doing? Did you have the surgery? Looks like I’m facing the same diagnosis and I’m your age. All the info about this surgery is negative that I can find except this video. Would love to talk to you about your experience.
Hallo, four months after hip arthroscopy my hip and back ,illiopsoas are stiff and and my gait pattern not still correct . I have knee pain during walking , is all that normal?
Thank you for your answer.
Definitely sounds like something you should talk to your physical therapist about!
@@UltraTrailSteven thank you very much.
My wife is being suggested the laberal tear repair using the keyhole surgery for what is essentially glute pain or symptoms like sciatica. Did you have any such symptoms before the surgery? If so, how are you feeling now?
I will have Valan comment, but she was having lots of sciatic type pain before. Not now though.
I’ve not heard the term keyhole surgery. I did have lots of glute and sciatica before but none now.
Hey I have an impingement and Labral tear. Dr keeps saying don’t get surgery but after PT I have severe sciatic like symptoms and I can’t drive, sit or walk for long. It started as extreme pain in the butt and hamstring and now it feels like it’s in the back. Are these the symptoms your wife had? I would welcome any feedback about this, I’m miserable. Thank you
@@stephanielafferty7078 she's been recently finally diagnosed as having facet joint issues . She is supposed to get Radio frequency denovation to sort the pain. Apparently the sciatica like pain is rooted in the facet join.
We never got her laberal tear fixed as doc didn't think it was a problem and steroid injection to her hip did not give her any relief
I had a lot of sciatica too. Infact my FAI, was misdiagnosed as a back issue for several years.
did you have both hips done
No, Valan only had her right hip done.
I had an arthroscopy and a Labrum repair followed by three attempts to tighten the joint. 5 years on and I still have a weakness in my left leg. It’s so so so frustrating. I have a huge aerobic capacity but a leg that will not do what I want it to.
Oh no! Sorry to hear that. Hopefully the doctors can get it sorted
@@UltraTrailSteven I’ve given up on surgery. In retrospect if I had my time back I most likely wouldn’t go through it. A friend of mine who was an excellent 10k racer said it finished him.
I’m still running but sustained effort on even the slightest gradient reduces my left leg to jelly. I’ve gone around the block and back to find out why , but no joy.
I love endurance running but when you feel like you’re running on one leg it really frustrates me.
@@williamwalker3837 so sorry to hear that!
is it possible to run through a hip labral tear? i can't afford surgery at the moment. i rest it until i don't feel pain, but even after short runs the pain is so severe it lasts for 3-4 days afterwards.
Yes. But it will be painful.
@@UltraTrailSteven awesome, as long as it doesn't make it too much worse. I'll just take a lot of ibuprofen and Tylenol before and after my runs. if it's just a pain tolerance thing I will fight through it! just hoping it doesn't make it significantly worse.......
@@hineighbor well it could get worse. I’m not a doctor though, so consult your physician
It is possible, but you will injure it worse. I played hockey with a torn labrum and was able to play through the pain, until one day I took it too far and did more damage that made hockey impossible. I have since had hip surgery and am now in recovery.
I am 3 months post op. I am having tfl and hamstring spasms that I haven’t had. I did have tendinitis in the hip flexor at 8 weeks. Will these spasms go away? I’m fine during the day and at the end of the day I have pain.
My wife had some tfl spasms. After the PT worked then out they went away b
@@UltraTrailSteven did she start to feel she turned the corner after the third month?
Also did she do dry needling w pt for tfl?
When I had spasms, I ended up taking. A full week off and did lots of stretching and foam rolling. My surgeon said that it was a signal to back off on rehab. I’m at 5 months now and things are pretty smooth.
@@valankornhaus8353 did you pt do any dry needling with you?
Hi, this is a great video, thank you. I had R hip FAI arthroscopy with labral tear back in March of 2022. I was feeling amazing, and then, all of a sudden, while chasing my daughter up he stairs, felt a "ZING" in the front of my hip. It's been 2.5 months of flair up since. Your video is very helpful in assuring that everybody has these from time to time. I'm wondering, even with FAI surgery that removes the impingement and fixes the labral tear (I had debridement), it's not common to re-tear the area? Is that true? Thank you so much!
Hi and thanks! I have heard in the first few months re-tearing has happened for some. Best of luck to you!
How is your hip now?
Seriously 4 months? You start running? I can’t even walk without crutches I’m on 7 week plus. My knee get locked up my pt said my TFL muscles and IT band flared up. Maybe I’m just old I’m 47 years old plus My muscles in my legs weak.
Valan followed her PT and Surgeon's protocol to the T, and got the clear to run. Hopefully you will too soon!
@@UltraTrailStevenwhat is IT😊
I'm 3 months post op and just started walking more without a crutch. I'm still in a lot of pain though. I only pray I'm active again one day soon too. Hang in there.
