I'll tell you what else Yamaha guitars are missing: distribution. Five or six years ago, I could find a Pacifica at Guitar Center. These days, they're putting Revstars in the hands of RUclips artists but not in retail stores. I can go put my hands on an Ernie Ball Majesty and a Luke iii on a showroom floor right now, but I can't try a Revstar.

My first electric guitar was a 1980 Yamaha SA-2000 that I bought used and in excellent condition for $375 in 1983. I loved how this guitar played and sounded, so in 1984, when I found a strat-style Yamaha SSC-500 on sale for under $200 out the door, I went for it, mainly because it felt similar to the SA-2000 and had the single coil sound. I fooled around with different hardware and pickups on it because I wasn't thrilled with the sound at the time, but I really liked the way it played. I later found an early 80's Les Paul style Yamaha (I don't remember the model number) for sale used for ~ $200 and purchased it for the same reason as the SSC-500 -- because it, too, played like the SA-2000. Later, I bought a new mid-80's P-bass-style Yamaha bass for ~ $250 because it played wonderfully, also.
I never exclusively looked to buy specifically Yamaha. They just ended up being really quality instruments for a great price and fit what I was looking for and within the budget I had at the time. Yamaha was producing some really high quality and inexpensive stuff in the late 70's - early 80's.
Sadly, in the early 90's, I had my rehearsal studio broken into and lost all my guitars, along with amps (including a Yamaha G100-112), effects, and sound gear. I especially miss the SA-2000 and am unable to afford a used one as they are going for thousands of dollars these days. I did find another SSC-500, shortly after, and have been playing that one ever since. I've had really good experiences with Yamaha.

There is something about these Revstar II! After I saw Matteo playing his Revstar a few years back, I tried to see if the custom shop was making the same model for everyone, but they were not. So I did not expect that they would be releasing this upgraded models until I saw the ads recently. Very decent all around guitar! P90s, steel frets, and obvious Matteo's string spacing for guitar finger picking.... excellent plank! Very sophisticated chambering plus the carbon strips. Reminds me of what Bose does to speaker case chambering. I think this is definitely a keeper. May try the orange one. The gloss on the blue really shows those finger prints, but it is a gorgeous blue. Tom Anderson seems to suggest the days of the strat are over because he finds the Jazz Master style body as less sticking in your gut! LIke to see you play Stern's Pacifica for an assessment.

My Yamaha SA 1100 turned out to be a sleeper. I bought it used at a good price from a local shop, just to have a semi-hollow style electric in my collection (and because I love Phil Keaggy's work on an SA 2000). The quality of the pickups really struck me in the store. I thought it might have been a lucky combination with the amp I auditioned it with, but in fact they really are great pickups. This guitar has become my main electric guitar. I so love the pickups/circuitry that, even though the pots are now kind of scratchy (even after I disassembled and cleaned them a couple years ago), I'm reluctant to replace the pots, because they're a non-standard resistance, and I don't want the tone to change.
Probably my favorite way to play this guitar is with the switch in the middle (both pickups), the bridge pickup maxed in volume & tone, the neck pickup with the tone rolled quite a bit down, and then using the neck volume knob to control both volume and tone. Small adjustments near the top of the range take me through some really appealing tones, with the bright bridge pickup playing against the rolled-down neck pickup. -Tom
PS: Here's Keaggy talking about his SA 2000, and doing an incredible improvisation on it, featuring his volume knob and eBow work: ruclips.net/video/NIWMrK67_bk/видео.html. Like Phil, I've swapped my neck volume knob with the pickup switch, so I can get pinky access to the volume knob. That's the "missing" thing from Yamaha (and lots of other makers) from my perspective-make sure there's pinky access to the volume knob *always*.

just bought a Japanese revstar from Andertons exactly like the one in your video (even the same colour). amazingly comfortable, well-finished guitar and the P90 tone is to die for. electrics must have great shielding as well, because there is very little ground hum from the pickups - a bonus from a P90 equipped guitar.

I dunno... I took my extremely cheap EG-112, stripped it of all hardware, and made it the high quality S-type guitar you're talking about. CS69 and Seymour Duncan pickups, CTS pots, Callaham bridge, Graphtech nut and tuners. What more could you need?
Sure, some people don't like messing around with their guitars. But the way I look at it is that what a Yamaha guitar gives you is a very good bit of wood for an affordable price on top of which you can build exactly the kind of guitar you want.

Their pickups leave a lot to be desired. They have been using G&B pickups, which people either love or hate, on all their guitars. I own the first version Revstar p90 model and always thought it sounded lifeless/thin. Replaced the pickups (G&B again, even though they claimed it was Yamaha designed/voiced) with some Wilkinsons and instantly heard improvement. Given that the guitar sold for about 600 bucks you'd expect better pickups.
I've owned other various Yamaha Electric guitars that varied in years made and they all had G&B pickups and i've had to upgrade pickups on all of them.
Pickups are definitely their weak point.

Last winter, I purchased two brand new Yamaha Red Label FGX5's, their top of the line, made in Japan acoustic. Both were terribly messed up. One had deep circular sanding gouges on the top with more gouges around the bridge. The other had weird giant gaps of stain modeled all over the sides with were easy to see from across the room. These are flaws you wouldn't see on any guitar at any price point but I got two in a row. Obviously they went back. I sent two respectfully worded, hand-written letters to Yamaha with no reply. I think the biggest issue with Yamaha and you alluded to it in your video, is that a lot of guitar players associate them with lower priced acoustics. It’s a brand where people tend to ignore their higher priced offerings which are incredible. Their 26, 36 and 56 acoustics are up there with Collings, Martin, Taylor etc but they don’t get enough credit. I think there’s even a slight negative bias with the Revstar line. Wonderful guitars but because Yamaha doesn’t have that “wow” factor of traditional brands, they kind of get knocked down a peg.

Yamaha is who I'd point to a new player to for someone who wants something that is good quality but not a huge price. "Bang for your buck" so to speak. I just don't know that I'd ever invest in one and I guess that's a consequence of marketing in my head.
That being said, I'd love to see you do a review of the THR modelers (if you haven't already done so). Would be really cool to hear your perspective on them given your experience with some of the other units you can use to play at home when you can't crank a tube amp
Edit: I just did a search and see that you've reviewed the THR10...because of course you have hah.

mmm back in the late 70/80s there were many yamaha strat/les paul copys, the yamaha studio lord etc and then theres the legendary yamaha sg,a real les paul killer, they also make some of the best flamenco guitars in japan, outside of spain.then theres the pacifica, problem with pacifica is many think its a budget guitar, where as you know the high end pacificas made in japan are top notch, since yamaha and a few other japanese brands opened factories,or outsourced cheaper models from china/indonesia/korea they have lost a bit of kudos, but older japan made yamaha sg etc go for big money

I've just boxed up the pacifica 611 to return to sweetwater
The fender squire thinline telecaster with P90s blows away the pacifica as far as sound and playability
I'm waiting for an open box revstar to try out....
    But the pacifica is midrange
    Decent..at best
I didn't expect the squire to be that much better
    But it is.......

I'm inclined to disagree with this thesis. The guitar market is bloated with strat-a-likes at every price point. Why I like the Revstars is that they aren't a copy, or homage, they are a Revstar & that's why they're cool. Now to do a more Fender like guitar electronically, cool. But I feel it should be a different shape (even if it's just Strat pickups on a Revstar body) Like those Yvette Young Talmans super cool Strat & Tele alternatives. That'd be my preference for direction.
Like if Chris Buck wanted to do a Yamaha that blends his love of his Revstar & his Strat & do something unique, dunno a Chris Buck Yamaha "Silver Sky"? Personally that's got appeal.

Great video! I disagree about a high end pacifica. I just don't like knock offs and a pacifica is just a knock off. In my own small way i like to give my support to manufacturers who create original designs. That's why I love the revstar and looking to get the standard with p90s. i would never buy a pacifica.

  • @chrishandley

Yamaha's are a bit quirky, for some that's thier appeal I think? Like Gretsch guitars perhaps. (they've made some quite mad technically advanced guitars in the past; the Rgx A2 for example) and still make the silent acoustic guitars
They used to make good cheap beginner guitars Rgx and Rgz (had the former wanted the latter) but got a YSG, which is an ugly PRS copy, really well made though.
I've never like Pacificas, are the expensive ones Indonesian?
A really well made 'attractive' 'S' type might be a thing, a signature model for you perhaps?

I just picked up a used 2022 Revstar standard with p90’s in blue after watching the previous video. I grabbed it for a quick play and suddenly it was hours later.
It rates very well against my other guitars which cost 4 to 5 times as much and it stands as a leader in that price range IMHO.
I think the revstar is one of the freshest designs in years and does its own thing very well. Great vid John and thanks for turning me on to this axe.

Yamaha are missing QUALITY CONTROL. A new Revstar Standard (Mark 2) arrived at my place yesterday but I've sent it straight back to Andertons: G-string and a top E that both sounded like banjo strings - obviously something seriously wrong with the way the nut had been cut. Poor quality control from Yamaha and just as bad from Andertons - they either a) didn't bother to check the strings by playing a couple of chords before sending out the guitar, or, b) they just sold it online without even opening the box. Both are unacceptable, so now I'm sending it back and buying the same guitar from another online company in the UK Here's hoping it's not another Yamaha dud. PS: I can report that the sound of four of the six strings on the Revstar was awesome!

What Yamaha really lacks is stage presence, meaning, they have no high-profile players using their guitars. I'm talking much bigger than the Chris Buck's of the world. There are great players using their guitars but what you see on stage and screen is Fender, Gibson, PRS, Ibanez, and then a hodge podge of other brands. Yamaha is one of the least visible brands on stage and screen. It's really a shame because they make quality instruments.
I do agree, however, that they also need to tap the "high end" market with a version of the Pacifica or something else to inspire interest like they did with Revstar.

Big Name? In 70s and 80s, Carlos Santana used to play Yamaha SG2000 until he switches to PRS. When I grew up in Japan, almost all of “guitar” friends in my high school had Yamaha SG. When we say “SG”, it meant Yamaha, not Gibson … hahaha..
How about Kyoji Yamamoto? Vow Wow? I think they earned “some” fame in UK in 80s. Neil Murray(ex-whitesnake) was in the band. Issei Noro , Japanese fusion band “Casiopea” ? They had a few fame in UK, too. I played guitar and drum in my school years, but I played in the 1st band in high school as a drummer. I was 16. (because most of the guys wanted to play guitar). 1st song we ever played was “Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile)”- Carlos Santana.
We hated Japanese songs at that time, but nobody dared to sing English song… ;) and nobody understood us when we played that song at the annual school autumn festival. Good memory ;)

@@bongo2565 I understand; however, other than Santana, I've never heard of any of those artists. I like Yamaha gear generally speaking, but if you're going to capture the attention of guitarists you want to buy your guitars it's much more enticing to have your product seen in the hands of the biggest artists. During the 70's here in the U.S. Gibson and Fender dominated the market.

    • @superlead1002

@@johnnathancordy I'm not sure about the differences in the mindset of pianists to guitarists, however, the 60's, 70's and 80's very much established Gibson and Fender as the dominant brand played by influential artists. That's not to say no one played Yamaha guitars, but they were rare to see on stage with biggest most influential artists of the time. Once the precedent is set, and younger players strive to attain the guitars of their heroes, the mold has been cast. Just my opinion for whatever it's worth...🙂

@@superlead1002 Thanks much for the response! I guess I might have been a bit sarcastic in my previous comment, and yes, I totally agreed with you. They do not promote like Ibanez does. To be honest with you, I am actually bit surprised that Yamaha continues to make guitars with some unique and somewhat innovative features. As a Japanese user and my guitar buddies in Japan used to say (more than decades ago… I am 57 now by the way), Yamaha went on the downhill and almost gone in the market after the SG era, but I guess we were wrong.. ;) I recall that I read an article saying that Ibanez constantly visited many pro musicians internationally and built close relationships, and got their feedback and incorporated them to their guitars. Like, JEM model for Steve Vai. I wonder if Yamaha has done the same…
By the way, I see you play Tokai Les Paul. :) I met the president of Tokai at 2018 NAMM in CA. He treated us and my family politely at the show. Looking at your t-shirt, we may be the neighbors as I now reside in East Coast, USA.. ;). Thanks again!
