  • For my Presets visit: johnnathancord... Here are what I think are the most important things to check when buying a guitar, whether in a store or not, to hopefully avoid spending money on a guitar that isn't going to make it past the honeymoon....What to you like to check?

Not forgetting the most saddening thing to do, the reality check, usually occurs after consulting the powers that be. It can be heartbreaking 🙁

Also, I love when you do a video on a new concept that you are working on and then you flawlessly integrate it into your playing.

John you have just given many guitarists a really exhaustive quality check on just about any guitar. I especially liked your comments on the intonation and fretting. So Important!

Everyone should check for small holes. My ultra luxe fender came with something that looked like air bubble stuck below lacquer, didnt think much of it. 5 months later i was cleaning guitar and i found total of 11 holes on guitar body. Guitar was infested by some insect, probably ash borer that was eating it inside and made tunnels out. Fender is replacing it under a warranty.

Thanks, for the really good tips. Especially for an enthusiastic buyer (my son). The guitar one dream of doesn't have to be just the right one.

Great practical tips 😄 I spend ages researching how a new one might sound. I recently bought a Fender Tele Magico as I fell in love with the sound. When I got to the shop, it’d been on the wall ages and strings were completely dead, and they plugged it into a cheap little practice amp. It sounded like 💩. But because I’d spent hours listening to different demos I knew it wasn’t how it should sound. Got it home, new strings, my rig…heaven.

All true but checking if frets are level is hardly possible without doing basic set-up work like setting the neck straight and lowering the action.
I don't believe the strings would have been stretched so I wouldn't expect a guitar to stay in tune in a shop. It wouldn't have been set-up as I want it either. Intonation says nothing certain. It will need adjusting when action of string gauge are changed.
So really, I think buying a guitar in a shop is a bad idea. Better get it online with a proper return policy and take the time to go through things properly. Then by all means, go through all the points in the video and more.

Another thought I had - things like finding out a truss rod is ceased might happen literally months into ownership? So in that case, it's kind of....bad luck if that happens to you?

    • @Leo_ofRedKeep
      @Leo_ofRedKeep 2 года назад

@@johnnathancordy Truss rod issues would be a warranty case reaching beyond the usual return policy conditions but if you buy a 2nd hand guitar from someone on a car park, do insist on checking it on the spot and watch out for a twisted neck too. These are clear deal stoppers.

    1. Bring a STRAP or ask to borrow one. Stand up and play. 2. Grab a comparison guitar off the wall. One you already own or have played. 3. Turn down and just play the guitar for awhile in the store. 4. Go home.
My two favorite guitars took months to pull the trigger. I wanted to see if it still drew me in every time I stopped by the store. If they were sold, ehh, wasn’t meant to be.

For me, not a youngster anymore...first and foremost the weight ....then the shape, finishes, tone, electronics...kind of in that order...most of all that can be researched online providing there isn't a good music shop nearby AND they stock what you're looking for.

So I have been getting into fret leveling lately. I bought a lot of Stewmac material. Including a long fret leveling beam that can be used WITH THE STRING ON! I used it twice with great results but my crowning job wasn't that great so I brought it to the tech, he did another leveling with the neck off, supposedly the best way... I got the guitar back with nicely crowned frets but plenty of high spots!! WTF?? My technique makes much more sense.
Also another theory... If you really want low action on a strat, you need to stair-step your high frets, like the last 7 or 8 frets... A stepping down stair. Especially on low radius strats!! I finally tried it and IT WORKS.
Anyways, I'm not going to techs anymore for fret issues except refret... But even that I intend to learn...
With a fret rocker, you can spot a bad fret job in a shop in 10 seconds.
    Cheers 🍻

The past couple years I been learning setup and pretty much how to do everything from truss rod, bridge and frets etc. and it has been the best thing I’ve done. Too many times have I brought a guitar into the shop and the tech give it back with more problems. Stew Mac is the best for luthier tools imo

Guitars should only be bought if they look really cool...not just cool, but wow cool! Playability and quality craftmanship is meaningless otherwise...just my philosophy 😉

Glitchy editing makes this hard to sit through - it’s like the host can’t get through a sentence without some cut and paste. Feels weird. Sorry to be negative - maybe just leave in your awkward pauses or whatever it’s fine, the editing is too odd as is.
