Love how you said no to the grand a half Epiphone and got a comparable guitar for half the price . Really puts the new Epiphone pricing into context 👏. I’ve got a couple of Yamaha SG’s, both of which were less expensive than the current new range of Chinese Epiphone’s 😎

I got one of these after watching your review of the basic model (I decided that between this and the pro there wasn't much that would justify the extra £'s). I concur with everything you say, except your comment on the colours available. Mine is Hot Merlot and looks fabulous and I like the others as well. This is a fantastically spec'd guitar for the price point. The build quality is excellent and it plays really well. I recommend people get one if you are going through a bout of GAS.

I just purchased this guitar ( gold one) on the weekend after 20 minutes playing it in the store - it is UNBELIEVABLE for the price. On par with my now $3000 Musicman silhouette special. Stainless steel frets, incredible neck and the satin finish is smooth as silk - it sounds very loud and resonant acoustically. The pickups are fantastic, very punchy and articulate. Volume maintains treble throughout. I am flabbergasted - it feels like a 3000$ + guitar... the push pull switch is great with overdrive- especially the bridge pickup , but less useful on clean.

I think Colin’s outstanding guitar playing in the latter half of the review tells you all you need to know about the incredible tonal qualities this guitar can produce. I own one in the sunset burst. You clearly loved rocking out with this Col! I have had the exact same model for the past year and love the looks, versatility and tone. As you say, ergonomically it is just right, the belly carve is just right and the neck is silky smooth. Those P90s are pretty hot but the passive boost does tend to muddy the clarity; depends what you are after tone wise I guess. Thanks for a great review; you managed to play at speed even without those go faster stripes!

Excellent assessment and comment! Like you said, I only wish that the P-90 version would also get sold with a hardtail and the racing stripes like the humbucker version. It’s also sometimes uncomfortable to play rock while muting strings with the fancy tail that’s usually more suited to playing clean tones - a Jazz player would really like the tailpiece on this model. The carbon reinforced neck is a huge bonus and should be done on all guitars at this juncture. I do like the specs, colors and aesthetic Yamaha biker vibe otherwise, just those changes would make the P90 version perfect for rockers. Have to admit that this tailpiece is well designed, though.

So I went down a revstar rabbit hole a couple months back when I was gassi’n for a high-fret access guitar and what i concluded was that they hold their money throughout the price points, the standard offers what the pro does for half the cost, they are on the heavy side, they come in flat colours unless you buy an older blue Jean model which is tiger striped.
I got to the stage where I decided I liked the P90 version in sunset finish Standard version and had almost scored one off eBay but the deal fell through… I still check eBay from time to time but although I haven’t played one I kind of think I’d rewire one to a simpler 3 position setup and maybe change the pickups to suite - I’ve gone off trick switching.
Must say col.. really loved your jam… l always find them entertaining but this weeks one was a vibe mate and your vibrato is getting killer 👍

Thanks for that review Colin - really enjoyed all of it. There is the RSPro 20x - rusty brass charcoal - has the racing stripes. I’ve got that guitar in that colour and also have the previous generation P90s RS502 (Japanese denim blue). Both are great guitars. I like the previous generation for its simplicity and just think it’s a fantastic guitar. The more expensive pro guitar that I have is significantly lighter, resonates better and has fast neck, but I think the benefits of actually having that over a standard are marginal. It does though, more than hold it’s own (its a humbucker guitar) against the Gibson LP that I have - in fact in many ways it’s superior and way cheaper. These guitars have good upper neck access, clarity and great feel. The focus option really comes into its own on with more gain - I use it a lot. Keep it going -ATB👍👍

I've had one of these for around six months after wanting one for quite a while, I went for the Hot Merlot and love the colour but that totally a personal think. But the Guitar itself is unreal for the price the frets being stainless steel for me make them effortless to bend and play and really the over all quality I received the guitar in was unreal tbh. I've had Fenders and Gibsons and 4 times the price that haven't had the attention to detail that these have had. I always recommend these to people looking for a decent yet affordable guitar as I just think for the price its hard to beat as the build and sound are just amazing.

I got to noodle on one of these last week. Amazing. The humbuckers sounded great, but the P90s were amazing. Hoping to have enough saved up to pick one up this summer.

Always got time for you, Col! Looked and played superbly, and you didn't need to tell us you'd had fun, we could see it in your playing. Miss you when you're gone, so I look forward to your next yt foray.

Very nice guitar. The fretwork looks beautiful. I have an affinity for proprietary models from companies that also make decent copies of other models. This one for example, the Epiphone Wilshire, etc. It's nice that some brands offer something unique instead of just the same old clones. Regarding going off on tangents, I've come to expect that and usually find it rather enjoyable. Garrulous is a good description of your presentation style. Thanks as always.

Colin, You gave that geetar a good workout and you sounded good with it. Yes, that was a very nice "bit of noodlin' " you treated us with. I wholeheartedly agree that, that guitar has character. Plus, the price keeps it in the ballgame for people with G.A.S. on a budget. This is a GOOD one to plan ahead for! I smell G.A.S.! Thanks again Colin for another great lesson!

I was wondering when you'd get around to reviewing the Revstar Col...
    And bang! here we are!!
I've had a strum on a cpl in shops (unplugged) and I'm impressed, l don't wanna plug one in... trying to come up with an excuse for another guitar when Ive a few needing upgrades etc.
    Soon-ish though!!👍🏼

My RSS20 is the most comfortable to play, perfect balance and the neck and frets are perfection. The Epi LP 59 Ltd Edition feels like a log by comparison and now lives in its case. The Revstar is my ‘desert island’ instrument.

I have the humbucker version of this. I was after the P90 one but found a B stock humbucker in blue at a daft price I couldn't resist. Lovely guitar but I haven't quite learnt how to play it yet :D

Splendid guitar. Nice to see Yamaha gave it an individual voicing. I have a reason to buy one to go with my SG standard.

I have been watching for quite some time now and that was probably your finest playing yet. The guitar must really speak to you!
    Mind how you go

about the focus switch and readings, it must be wired at the very end of the circuit so what happens is when it engages the secondary coil must go to the outpuit, and this fixed reading must be the resistance given by this secondary coil

I woke up at 4 this morning I needed the middle aged toilet stop couldn’t really sleep so put this video on.
I love Yamaha as a brand no frills good honourable craftsmanship the Japanese precision is something to be very respectful of.
You played great geez I could tell you enjoyed that guitar. 👍

To me, Yamaha has a certain design aesthetic that comes through in a lot of its designs. BB basses, Revstar guitars, rounded proto-superstrats from the late 70s, and 60s and 70s motorcycles with the tuning forks on the tank. Yamaha might not have the old rock pedigree of Fender or Gibson, but it's an iconic brand whose history shows through in its new designs.

This guitar somehow 'invites' to be played. Never had the same feeling with aby other guitar. Jumbo frets awesome. Definitely buying it in near future

Such great guitars. The black is nice but the Hot Merlot has a blacked out back, the Sunset Burst looks like it sat too close to a campfire and the blur is corny looking. I like this one.

That was some nice playing on an excellent sounding instrument. I've got the humbucking version in black. It has the racing stripes, but they're quite subtle. I also have the sunset burst with the p90s. I think it's beautiful, but that's all personal taste. ...... Great vid.

Nice one. Remember you doing that other one with humbucker.
Nice to finally get to see this one.
First Yamaha guitar I got interested in. Somehow the brand is marked as motorcycle brand in my brain.
You can add your own go faster racing stripes Colin.
