    Josh,that's one of the down falls of the Vintrac or any other mower where your mower deck is out front it gets to it a lot sooner. Less chance to see it, on a bigger tractor your up higher, better to see stuff, 3pt mowers your driving over it before giving you a chance to stop. But don't matter what you hit a rock with somethings gotta give. Great video,& thanks for showing everything. Ok back to work.

My Swisher T60 5 foot finish mower has steel spindles, I have yet to break one and I've put a ton of hours on it. I've seen people custom fab up steel spindles to replace there aluminum ones, might want to look into that.

    That grease zerk fills the spindle housing with grease which in turn greases the bearings. Pump it with grease until it comes out the breather. Some bearings have 2 rubber seals, some have 2 metal ones, some may a combination. Either way, pump those housings full.

    So the Ventrac has been put to the test on the Stoney Ridge Farm and from everything you have shown us it's done a fabulous job. I am curious as to why there would not be some type of shear pin for the spindles? Unless the spindle is designed that way for this reason. Either way, the farm looks outstanding, 🚜-Woooooo!!!

    Anti-seize compounds are also used to improve gasket performance and removal, prevent thread galling during installation, thermal cycling, dissimilar metal corrosion and protect the joint from highly corrosive environments. The most correct ant-seize compound to use is application dependent.

    FYI sealed bearings are great. It keeps debris out of the bearings. The failings of some manufactures is that they install bearings both top and bottom of the spindle. That's fine... its just that they do not remove the 'inner' seal so that when you put grease in to the grease zerk it would actually get to the bearings that will need it. Other wise you just fill the cavity with grease and then the bearings fail cuz.... no grease.

  • @andrewkiwi1

    Its well designed with a engineered stress point with the circle of holes in the hub. This will save you from twisting the deck. That would be harder to repair because if the alignment of the shafts are out and it will throw belts.

    Although putting the blade back on and using the pipe was a definite way to hold the pully still, it dose take time. It might well have worked to just put something like a wedge of some sort under the belt as it enters the pully. This way as it turns the wedge will tighten the belt and stop it from turning. May not always work depending on the traction you get on what you use as a wedge. But it takes little time to try it and will save a lot of time when it does work. Keep in mind that I have not personally worked on a tractor like this before, but I have used this on other things. ;-}}

    Good quality spindles will have the bearings sealed on the outside and open on the inside from what I understand. If you have one that is sealed on the inside it is only a shield and can be pulled off without damaging the bearing.

    • @augustreil
      @augustreil 5 лет назад

      Not a good idea to remove the inner seals, especially on the top bearing. By doing so, when the grease gets hot, it will not stay in the bearing. Leave the seals in and pump it full of grease until it comes out of the top and or bottom. There almost always is a big washer that covers the outside bearing seal, protecting and keeping them from blowing out from greasing. I've done the trick you're talking about 25yrs ago and does not benefit the bearing whatsoever. It's actually worse. Edit: Grease will push through both the inner and outer seals with no damage to them, thus filling the bearing cavity.

    Like you said about the sealed bearings on the new spindals…..I came across the same video that one guy had put up.So in 2015 I rebuilt the deck on my JD lawn tractor.I took apart the new spindals that I sent for on Ebay…..sure enough sealed bearings on the inside too.I was able to peal out the seal with a pick and grease the spindal….now the grease can feed the bearings.I brought this up to this one guy at my local JD dealer and asked him about this.Only one guy knew anything about the idea of what I was talking about and what good does a grease fitting on a spindal do if grease cant get to the ball bearings.I compared the price I paid on ebay...to what JD wanted.It was quite a difference.From then on I dissected my new spindals from then on and passed on the information to my friends.Then this guy at the JD place called me and said one day he took one apart....and found that the seals were in place on the insides of the new bearings he stocked.He said he will start passing on the info.I asked him....why not ask the people who designed this....call them up and demand to know why........Wooo

    Josh, something to share with you that I just discovered. You got a bunch of grass to cut like I do. I have a bunch of bahia mixed with mine and blades dull in no time. I would use my grinder to sharpen them but never could get them back to what they were. They finally got so bad I would replace them. I came across another youtube channel that was talking about Allamericiansharpener.com. I went ahead and got one. The first sharpening took a while in order to rebuild the edge correctly. But after that only a couple of passes are needed. It's a jig that keeps you at the proper 30 degree angle. My cuts look a lot better now and my cutting speed picked back up because it was cutting with less load on the mower. At $60 a pop for blades and going through a 2-3 sets a year, I'll recoup my $200 investment in no time. I'm hoping I can bring it down to a max of one set a year. Time will tell on how much metal remains to safely use the blades at the end of the cutting season. Just something I wanted to share that you might want to look into.

    Hi Stony Ridge farmer! Seen as you wanted questions id thought id ask, instead of having heaps of different machines and implements that only are suited to one machine, how come you didnt just get a tracked skid steer and use it for everything. It could do mowing, clearing, fencing, forks for unloading, trenching, digging etc as well as youd have less compaction on your land and quicker and easier attachment changeout, aircon cab etc.... Or do you just prefer tractors? TIA

  • @michaelj.rusyniii2864
    @michaelj.rusyniii2864 5 лет назад

    Guys, I never saw a relief valve on a spindle below the deck, mostly because they won work in all the dirt, moisture, and rust, most of you know that your lucky if the grease fitting works unless you grease it after every use. So most large spindles have a plug on the opposite side of the grease fitting not a relief valve and the bearing are only sealed on the outside. The plug has 2 purposes, one is that if when you install the spindle and the grease fitting is in a bad location you can swap it with the plug to a possible better position and second as I said before, you remove the plug and grease the spindle until clean grease flows out of the plug hole this this method tells you that enough grease has been added and also prevents you from blowing the outer seals out then reinstall the plug. When the spindle is then rotated at speed the grease will be sent into the bearings.

      On every spindle housing I've rebuilt, the zerk is for greasing the bearings. Why would a spindle need grease ? It's the bearings that hold the spindle that needs the grease.

      Because a sealed bearing doesn’t take grease from a fitting, however the shaft through the spindle still needs to be greased

      @@shawnhagen6871, A sealed bearing will take grease, trust me, they do. And they will take grease without ruining the seals. I have 6 walk behind mowers of my own for the last 25 yrs. That zerk, at least on all my spindle housings is for the bearings. The bearings are what holds the spindle shaft in place.
      Have you ever seen pillow block bearings ? The zerk on those grease the bearing directly, not the shaft running through it.
      Edit: The grease that is pumped into the spindle housing first fills up the housing itself until it reaches the bearings.

      @@shawnhagen6871, I'm sorry you don't understand how bearings and grease work. The reason I have so many mowers is because, get this, I OWN A BUSINESS.

    I have found the bottom bearing does not have a top seal just the bottom outer seal. So you do need to grease it. The top bearing is fully sealed. Makes some sense. If the top bearing didn't have a bottom seal, the grease would just fall out. You wouldn't want to pack the spindle so full of grease to keep grease in the upper bearing. There would be no air cavity to allow for thermal expansion.

      kb7722 his spindle has a relief valve for excess grease

      Bill Smith that just means you lose grease each heat cycle. Again based on the ones I’ve taken apart and even saw some on RUclips take apart, the upper bearing is fully sealed. So no need to pump the spindle full of grease. Just need enough to cover the bottom bearing.

    Wife Some times good and some time Not. It depends on the project. I have broken two spindles on my JD deck and replaced them it was easier than changing the belts.

    I’d search for a total deck rebuild before I buy part for part because you will spend a lot more money a deck rebuild kit will come with all new blades belt and three spindles for prolly the price of 2 spenders or a spender and the blades if you can find the deal for it some where online

    When I bought my finishing mower I also bought steel spindles that will last much longer than cast ones. Don't know if they are available for your machine.

    Hate to nitpic but that big swivel head breaker bar is a ratchet, not a breaker bar. Breaker bars are solid, they never ratchet.

    See if you can replace with non magnetic spindles, usually the older ones are less magnetic, if you install brand new spindles the rock magnets are still quite strong, they suck Rocks right in and destroy themselves 😥
