  • I set up my bush hog and got it adjusted for the first time. It is clear that I am an amateur but I think I got it sort of figured out. It is an Agri X 5 which is a 5' rotary cutter. I still have some adjustments on it and I figured that I need to slow down just a bit to get a better cut next time.

You've got the deck angle theory figured out. As far as the top link goes, if it is too short, as your tractor crests an incline (or even small elevation changes in the field) and the front wheels begin to go downhill, your bushhog will elevate leaving a section of grass that is cut higher (or not at all) than the height you have it set at. Too much length in the top link and you will tend to scalp the top of the incline as the bushhog body bottoms out. You may have to play with that adjustment to get it just right.

Thank you! I appreciate that. I thought it would be good to share things from a beginner's perspective to help show the learning.

Finally someone uses the southern term for a brush cutter, its a bush hog in Tennessee, even though Bushhog is a brand name. Take care around that machine

That is what we always called them here. For the longest time, I did not realize that wasn't the official name for them. It is good to know we aren't alone. Thanks for the words of caution!
