Time to ruin another hero from Greek Mythology: The minotaur slaying Theseus. You already saw the title, and yes... Theseus really did that. Though... to be fair, some say Helen was seven at the time, some say she was twelve, and yes... it doesn't make it any better.
Why would Theseus do that? Well... would it be any explanation if I told you he was Poseidon's son? If you know, you know. And if you don't know... this and more of Theseus' atrocities (and the occasional heroics, like the while minotaur thing...) is what we will be getting into in this video, this episode of Keeping Up With The Greek Gods: The Age of Heroes:
Episode 3 Of KUWTGG Season 2: The Age Of Heroes - Theseus
Notes:
There is a little bit less contradictions and multiverse shenanigans when it comes to Theseus - which is very convenient for me. Still, there are notes on today's script...
For one, I don't discuss all of Theseus' adventures - he was involved in more tales than what I cover, some of which are considered 'canon' and some of which are just regional tales that vastly differ, since Theseus was a popular hero and thus involved in many tales. If Herakles was Superman and Perseus was Batman, think of Theseus as something like... Spiderman. Actually, that is fairly accurate since Theseus' heroics also came when he was a teenager.
So with that in mind, there is one story that I left out because it would have gotten overly complex to explain the origin of his antagonists in this tale:
Theseus settled the conflict between the centaurs and the sons of Ixion.
Ixion was a king that was once punished by Zeus for trying to sleep with Hera yeah, (this is the short version) and he later fathered the race of centaurs (yeah, there's more to this), and since he also had human offspring that weren't massive fans of the half-horse-half-human centaurs, a war for the heritage of Ixion's lands broke out, and... well, Theseus settled that war.
Really wanted to include that story, but maybe I'll do a different video on beasts from Greek Mythology in which I'll cover it.
As for Theseus' marriage to Antiope: In some versions of this tale, Theseus' wife is actually the queen of the Amazons herself - Hippolyta. It's just that that version doesn't really work in context with Herakles, since Herakles kill Hippolyta, so she can't die in Theseus' war against the Amazons.
Other than that, just for reference... when Theseus kidnapped Helen he was already roughly 50 years old. Yeah... just food for thought to make this whole situation even worse.

I get a lot of questions about my artwork and where it’s from or rather who draws it. Well the answer is that I create it - I don’t draw it. I use AI to create the artwork, using specific prompts, specific style influences from 18th and 19th century artists, and I spend about 10 hours per video just on the artwork. Each video has roughly double the artwork of what you actually see in the video, so a lot of it is unused.
The good news about that is that you can get all that artwork on my Patreon:
The artwork I do use, and the artwork I don’t use.
Plus, by subscribing to my Patreon you are making a major contribution to Briefed and helping me to keep this channel going, because this is my full time job and the survival of the channel and quality of the videos greatly depends on said support. In return for supporting, you get more than the artwork though - you also get access to exclusive videos and you can download every video you see on here to download and keep.
If you choose to become a Patron - thank you. I do not take it for granted.
Footage:
In the beginning and throughout, I used a clip from Immortals, then Troy for the Helen of Troy bit, and other than that there's a clip from Scarface, the Marvel movies, and the Ryan Gosling beatdown is from Only God Forgives.

I just keep thinking about how originally, "hero" just meant someone of divine birth. I wonder where along the lines we started thinking it meant someone good.
Real
It doesn't necessarily mean someone of divine birth [though heroes do usually have divine lineage in their ancestry, it may not be their parentage]. In context, a hero is someone who is capable of great feats [regardless of the morality of those feats] and suffers some form of tragedy. It just becomes more "believable" that a single person can beat a whole army or whatever if they happen to be the kid of a god [which is why they often were divine], but there are non divine-born heroes, like Diomedes, Agamemnon, Ajax [the Great, of Homeric myth], or even Sisyphus [considered an absurd hero, who cheated death twice, but was punished for it].
beautiful comments by both babylon and DogMechanic. great addition for context to the video
That's the problem with real history, people don't want to know the real aspects of History none of these people in Greek mythology Were Heroes, since they were flawed people because they were supposed to resemble the gods who were flawed themselves like all religions that are man-made.
Facts in Percy Jackson Luke was remembered as a hero
Even when he tried to kill a child multiple times send said child to Greek hell and start WW3 plus groom another 12 year old 😂 like what did you all forget he tried to
Kill you 5 minutes ago. Redemption is fine but bro is a war criminal not a hero
I've come to the conclusion that Greek mythology is an unhinged X-rated soap opera
ironically the ancient writers of the greek myths would think the same of todays events
*YUP!!!*
My favourite running gags now are the idris elba "wtf" meme, and thor's "thats what heroes do". I was hoping you would use it when you did, and it brought a smile to my face 😂
haha I can't go a video without them because they always work 😭
Theseus was finding all the weirdest pranksters on his journey: from sciron to the inn keeper to dude catapulting with pine trees like a looney tunes villain
“Herakles, aka the biggest cheat code in Greek Mythology” 🤣💀 I don’t know why that was so funny to me, but it’ll live rent-free in my head from now on.
I’m so glad I stumbled across your channel! You have such a gift for storytelling. Seriously, I’m binge watching all your Greek gods and goddesses videos right now! Keep it up, this is great!❤
thank you, thank you 🥹 what a beautiful comment, and happy to have you on board for the journey 🫡

That’s what it is too.
Yesssss this channel is so good! It’s only a few months old right now, maybe he’ll get those 1M subscribers by years end, or even sooner; it’s only Feb 2024, and he’s already got over 52k, so he’s already halfway there!

Wtf sick game did Athena and Poseidon have going on?
it was really twisted. they had this forever feud, but some kind of twisted respect for each other at the same time - ultimately humans suffered for it

that Idris Elba clip always gets me 😂 I swear, your videos entertain me more than 90% of shows and movies available at the moment
I just realized I binged all your videos thinking you had like 5 million subs I just now realized you have 50k 😮
You really have some of the best quality of any channel that covers history/mythology please don’t stop bro 😭💪
Just so you know your channel quickly has become my favorite man! Love your mix of information and humor.

I love mythology, clearly there are many tales I haven’t covered.
I’m tickled that I can listen while I’m busy, & you go in-depth with your voice and the storyline.😊
Oh!!!🤣 Your injection with humor, parsley on my plate!🌿
This channel is amazing man, I can't believe I'm just discovering your videos🙏
thanks man 🥹 enjoy enjoy 🫡
I swear to god i can't take enough of these videos. Amazing in depth storytelling, super entertaining. Overall you can see that alot of effort was put in each of his videos. Amazing job thank you for blessing us with your knowledge
I struggle more and more to find moral instruction in ancient Greek mythology. "Ah, but you have to appreciate, it was a different time, Pete." Fuck that! Give me The Brothers Grimm, or Aesop, any day.
That's because greek myth is rarely about morality. There are sometimes lessons, such as in the story where Prometheus tricks Zeus into eating animal fat rather than meat, because Zeus believed his omniscience meant he didn't need to use logic [therefore, "even if you're knowledgable, be sure to think about your answers and solutions"]. Overall, though, it's less about morality, and more about how the whims of the gods effect the destiny of mortals. This is why you please the gods, so as not to be a victim of those whims.
Aesop was thrown off a cliff 😅
But this is why Greek mythology is so fascinating: it is in many ways a reflection of the collective shadow of ancient Greek societies. You can gauge from them what the Greeks feared and what they valued. They also contain many recurring truths of human nature.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I need to tell you that the real Brothers Grimm and Aesop’s Fables were not that g rated either. Look at the real stories and not the sanitized ones, they are just as bad. Humans always had a penchant for noticing and remembering episodes that were rife with violence and bad behavior.
The theory is that the Minotaur myth was constructed as a means to slander Crete as the Minoan and Greek civilizations didn’t get along.
The way i got excited when i saw you posted today. my body is ready for this video
Congrats on 50K subscribers!!!
thank you 🥹 and truly thank you, because you're literally one of the subscribers haha

Your storytelling ability is superb. You have a way of capturing my undivided attention as you reveal the unsavory truth about these classic figures. Keep up the wonderful work. It is purely outstanding.
So Helen of Sparta basically spent her whole life being kidnapped by men. I know she has been mentioned in videos before but it would be nice to see a video dedicated to her story.
I'll check to see if you have after posting this lol
Basically her story is in the story of troy
@@SomeOne-xj6ieher story starts long before Troy lmfao she’s the sister of castor and Pollux, born from a different egg with her twin sister at the same time those two were born

@@Briefed_Mythology always do!!! Kinda bummed it's only 28 mins and what, 5 seconds?! I NEED MORE!! Patreon, here I come! 😄😄😄
I thought it was only Herakles that had a macabre origin story, but it seems that whole suicide squad (Argonauts) was nothing but anti heroes
I’m gonna say it again, love the videos and the mythology you cover and give great facts!! Keep it up!!
I feel like a recurring theme in Greek mythology is a lack of communication. Like there's so many times where one of the characters could just confront the person they think betrayed them before ordering their execution or whatever but they never do until it's JUST too late lmao
yessss 😭 if those were movies I would call major plot holes haha
When Briefed uploads a video the world stops and watch, Im binge watching all of these and congrats on the 50k!!!
3 days… just finished binge watching all of your videos. You are the kind of youtuber that i hit the like button before even watching the content. Great job!!!
Great video Brother!
thank you brother my brother
You could literally read a book of baby names and I’d be running to listen! For real 😂 you make any name sound beautiful
LOL! When I grew up in the West Indies, we read a ton of Greek mythology. It was weird back then and even more weird now.
I love listening to your breakdowns, and listening to how the times have changed so much now. Someone who was viewed as heroic back then, is a straight up sadist now. And they were the "good" ones.
Every video is a masterwork! Fantastic job my friend!
thank you 😊🥹
3:30-3:45 Can I just say that if this is before or even after the whole Medusa thing, this puts Athena on whole other level of messed up. 😵💫
It's probably after Medusa, since Perseus existed and was the OG hero wayyy before Heracles was even born
Love your videos man keep em coming!
thanks 🫡 and congrats on the first again haha
Great video👏👏👏.
I love how Theseus and Pirithous thought they could just kidnap a goddess, queen of the underworld no less, and make her play housewife. Like she couldn't just say no to some mortals or have her very powerful god-of-the-underworld husband just smack the hell out of them. Greek mythology's crazy.
right? even if hades hadn't slapped them around, persephone could have too
I never laughed so hard while watching a Greek mythology video. Great storytelling! 😂😂
Fav history channel by far.
thanks 🥹
Ariadne by Jennifer Saint was an eye opening book about Theseus

The amount of times I hear about demigods, it made me think that I’ve maybe never heard about demigoddess. Are there any and if so, what stories do they have?
Helena of Troy
@@wolfsbanealphas617 Thanks for the answer. I didn’t ask the proper question. I know there were plenty of demigods and demigoddesses, but are there any with superhuman powers (other than beauty)?

I would like to say thank you for making these- I loved the watered-down versions when I was wee and have loved them all my life. I share your videos with friends who don't understand the love of mythology and the truths they contain- I know you have so much on your plate with Greek and Norse - but could I entice you to look at the Celtic and the Irish body of myth as well- I think you might like them especially the Hero cycle

There is something very poetic about Theseus losing his life in the domain of his actual father. You would think Posiedon would come to his sons rescue but he was like nah I'm good.
Love your.content.
0:36 Suic!de in the tree.... is that from the movie Dracula 2000?
Educational, entertaining, and oh so enjoyable to listen to. I go to bed with you several nights a week luckily my hubby is understanding and confident bc he encourages your voice when I can't sleep. So every video of yours usually gets played 3 - 4 by me.
I remember the story Theseus when I was in high school. Even read books on Greek mythology. Watching documentary on Greek myths, on you utupe channels. Even the film. Lol 😂... But I have never a full story like this. True. a lot of the storys have been cut out in one way or another. I is this the original story or all mushed story put together. Whatever. Magnificent story telling. 👏👏☕👍
A few days ago when you posted a photo I almost said it was Theseus but I decided not to say that then because I couldn’t see any horn symbolism. I need to trust my gut more often.
I don't know if C.S. Lewis originally said this or quoted it, but it ran something along these lines, "It seems the great virtues of the heroes of antiquity were actually great vices!"
oooh I never heard that quote. I like it - I like it a lot
here before 1M subscribers. just leaving my bookmark now.
I don’t know why King Aegean couldn’t have waited until everyone got off the ship to figure out if his son was dead or not instead of just throwing himself off a cliff just because he saw a black sail, but he didn’t actually check
man had a flair for the dramatic
Telling people about your show, tried doing it on my online forums and got reported for spam. But, everyone says its original, unfortunatley, like me, we watch it on the big screen and don't get to like and comment. Good show mate.
