Fun fact: Malachite becomes toxic in water, which shows how unstable the fusion is just by its name. The fact that Malachite in the show is trapped underwater represents how Lapis and Jasper being fused together is toxic and tormenting for both of them.
Garnet is a fusion made of love. She loves herself so much and so deeply it's literally who she is. Fusing with that has got to feel amazing, it could make you feel so complete and perfect and better than you've ever felt alone. No wonder they love fusing with Garnet so much, and no wonder Garnet loves being herself. Look at how much Sugilite and Sardonyx love being themselves, too. It's all held together by how much love Garnet has for herself.
And given that Amethyst and Pearl each have… issues… in the self-esteem department, they both can get kind of addicted. Amethyst through staying in Sugilite, and Pearl… like this.
For such a straight-laced character, Pearl has some of the best facial expressions. With Pearl repairing the communication hub so she can keep fusing with Garnet, on top of the whole "distraction from finding Peridot and Malachite" and "endangering the Earth" things, you also have to remember that fusion MEANS something to Garnet.
Fun fact! In Steven's black and white dream, Garnet is wearing the same pants that Connie's mom usually wears! I like to think that it's because Steven subconsciously thinks that's what "mom pants" look like, or maybe it's just because dreams are made up of things we already know all mashed together, so Garnet got a bit fused (haha) with Connie's mom.
Garnet sees what pearl did as a violation of her consent. Abuse of fusion is very traumatic to her. This relationship takes a while to resolve. I really like how this show tackles complex topics like consent.
"It sure would be nice if things worked out the way they do in cartoons." Well played, Rebecca Sugar, well played. This episode is always such a gut punch.

Fusion isn't sex, but it is such an incredibly powerful way to talk about sex in an all-ages approach. Malachite and Sardonyx here both represent two very different violations of consent that are not the obvious ones, and the way that Sugar and her team manage to teach children such important and weighty issues in a way that is fully accessible and understandable is a masterwork of storytelling.
Cry for Help is the first episode of a small story arc. When it originally aired they premiered all the episodes over the course of a single week. What Pearl did is basically the same as lying to someone to get them to be intimate (in whatever sense of the word "intimate" you want to use) because you know they would refuse otherwise. It was a massive violation of Garnet's trust, and it's understandable that she would be furious.

Welcome to 'The Sardonyx Arc' of the show. Starting around here, the show begins introducing much bigger story threads that don't get resolved right away, they can take several episodes to be properly explored, examined and ultimately dealt with. There's some, like Lapis and Jasper fusing into Malachite, which are just ocnstantly in the background, and others like... well, like this.
It's incredible going back and watching these episodes again after seeing the entire series... because you understand exactly why Pearl is the way she is...
What I love about this show is that they establish the concept behind fusion pretty early on. Fusions occur when two or more gems share a bond, be it romantic (Ruby & Sapphire), platonic (Steven & Connie) etc. Fusions take on a combined appearance of their components, and their personalities are often a combination of the personalities of their gem components. With that in mind, you can easily theorise about future fusion characters that may or may not appear, based on gems we already know. As a life-long Pokémon fan, this scratches the same itch as speculating about what your starter Pokémon will evolve into. I imagine a lot of the Crewniverse who helped to make the show were also Pokémon fans - nay, gaming fans in general - too, given the number of gamer Easter eggs in the background.

9:13 Actually, "Call For Help" is the first in a five episode arc that was billed at first broadcast as the "Week of Sardonyx". It was five new episodes premiering every weekday over a single week, which was an event referred to as a StevenBomb. This was a particularly popular way for Cartoon Network to release new episodes of the show, and even resulted in some episodes airing out of order to accomodate the storytelling. This StevenBomb was the third of seven, not counting the Summer of Steven event, but we'll get to that later.
the way the first episode just. casually introduces that Steven has some kind of empathy-based Dream Telekinesis, and it's somehow NOT the biggest bombshell of the episode, is classic SU magic. this concept will see a lot of play, especially once Steven masters the ability by the end of the season, calling for help from other alien lifeforms to stop a homeworld invasion.
As a Norwegian I am obligated to say this Chille tid is a reference to the Norwegian phrase …”chille tid” which translates to “chilling time” and was used on the Norwegian Cartoon Network for …something. I don’t fully remember. And yes I love these episodes these are really good episodes and it only keeps being great
"Chile Tid" Garnet:"...I win." Steven:"Don't you guys need to rest too? You look exhausted!" (Garnet face lined, Amethyst drooling, Pearl looking like a female Rick Sanchez) Garnet:We look AWESOME. Lol, Pearls dream. Garnet:"I'LL show you how it's done."(Two steps back, faceplants, begins to snore) "Cry for Help": In the second episode, I like how "Crying Breakfast Friends"tied into the plot. Steven said that he's forgive the character, while Garnet gives a non committal noise(and obviously tied in to the final line of the episode). Too bad they never do that again.... Lol, 17:15 Amethyst's reaction when Steven moves her hair. The music and the shot of Sugilite smashing the tower and the pieces falling in one punch is epic every time.
That's one of the things I love about this show. The first half-ish of Season 1 is your typical episodic cartoon, but those episodes pull a lot of weight in how they establish tone and setting and character. The second half-ish of Season 1 finally introduces us to the main threat of the series while tugging at some of the established characteristics and hinting at the emotional wringer the show is about to put us through. The season wraps up with a massive flex in plot, emotion, and characterization along with a huge tonal shift leading us into the rest of the series... which it would not have been able to pull off without the 50-some-odd episodes of work that they put in prior to that. Season 1 was a foundation painstakingly built, and now that Mosco is done with it, the sky's the limit; it is delicious gravy from here on out. ... but they don't stop building. They don't just play around; they continue to add new things the same way Season 1 did, through brief hints and flashes that are later explored, so not only does it never get old, it just keeps getting better. All the way up to the movie and Season 6, where the show... successfully pulls off what is simultaneously least expected and most sensible. It is a master class in story construction.
6:46 I'd like to see a psychologist disect that! 10:24 The studio can't really afford that. 10:52 Uh oh... she has that same look for a fusion with Rose. 11:35 And here's my favorite fusion, Sardonyx! And she's supposed to be a cross between a Vegas magician and a Late Show host. 19:31 Can the budget afford this? Just wait till the next episode 😊😊😊
LOL Emperor's New Groove much, love that movie!😂 "You threw off my groove!" Gard "I'm sorry but you've thrown off the Emperor's Groove" God throws old man off of Palace "sooooorryyyy!" 😂❤
Oh YES these episodes, but also OH NO these episodes. Back when Steven Universe would Air they would do so in chunks of episodes they would call Steven Bombs and oh boy some of those chunks hurt to watch, because we knew we wouldn't be getting anymore Steven for Months!
Sure... Ruby and Saphire COULD fuse with other Gems on their own. However, they would never do that if it was not absolutely necessary. But you will be quite surprised with the fusions that exist and you haven't seen yet.
Yeah, the main issue of what Pearl did here is that she was essentially obtaining consent under false pretenses. Which is a very personal violation for Garnet, especially as she's still raw from being forcibly separated, then discovering the forced fusion experiments. Fusion is extremely important to Garnet, it's fundamental to her very being and definitely a sacred act to her. To have that tainted by Pearl's lies, while also adding the complicating dynamic of Garnet being in a position of authority over the other gems, and Pearl's obvious crippling self worth issues, which we only learn more about the background of later... It's a really fraught situation all around.
So just a list of little things that I think you missed, forgot, or just what most of the fandom had figured out together by this point in the series (combo from a few reactions) all gems can fuse, they don't have specific partners who only they can fuse with. any gem can fuse with any gem, so yes ruby or sapphire could fuse with the others stable fusions are their own people. its not like ruby controlling one moment and sapphire the other, its just always entirely garnet. but when things break down and the fusion becomes less stable (like in emotional moments) the separate sides become more obvious. unstable fusions like malichite and alexsandrite don't have their own personality because the stability is SO weak. things like the fusion having extra arms or eyes can be an indicator of a fusions stability but not always. the gems took peridot's escape pod when steven found it, which is how pearl had it the tower location was the same place we first saw sugilite, its kinda hard to recognise since we only saw the original was a big building looking thing and we only saw it for a few minutes gems dont need to eat or breathe or do any other bodily stuff humans do. so they can all just go underwater and walk around but garnet and lapis are the only ones we've seen do it tho gems also don't age physically so in the flashback episodes like one of the last fewwhere they look younger, they werent. its just a weird style thing, they are all just the same size n stuff as they are now making rose one TALL lady
I love that final line from Steven. Theres just something so surreal about them calling out the drama for what it is and plainly stating that things dont always get better like they do in the shows. This stuff is real and people get hurt and thats life and you just gotta deal with it. A great message in my opinion. Things dont get better just cause you want them to
Before the slew of "fusion isn't s*x!!!" comments roll in, I'm just gonna give you a snippet of context. To preface--you are correct that fusion is an intimate thing, and intimacy can come in many different forms! The reason why people are pretty reactive to those comments is because a few years back, it became a pretty popular thing online to hate Steven Universe. If you liked the show, you had to keep quiet or else you would be intensely bullied. The show was totally trashed and the online "fandom" was full of toxicity...and one of the main points they used to prove the show sucked was "fusion is s*x so kids are having s*x in su!!!>:(". Thank god that era has passed and su is back in the public good graces, but yeah that time has left some pretty strong feelings towards the concept of fusion as a s*xual thing. thank you for coming to my history lesson lol. -Kit the Kat (from the server)
I've definitely been one of those voices saying it isn't just s*x, my reasoning is actually right here in this episode. If fusion is strongly related to s*x, then what Pearl did in this episode makes her unforgivable in my eyes. Also it does not reflect the way that the in-universe characters react.
10:38 Mosco's obsesion with mixing everything fusion related with romance or sexual tension its just hilarious at this point 😂. I mean, cant blame her for thinking that, the poses and dances are sometimes way too sugestive to be only platonic, but i really dont wanna think their are actually...."that" you know? It would make fusions weird to say the least.
There is certainly an element of physical intimacy. But it's definitely a lot more complicated. Pearl certainly violated Garnet's consent in this episode, but I think the implications of that alone mean we should be viewing fusion as a much broader concept.
Cry For Help is a fantastic episode. It directly parallels Coach Steven, the first Sugilite episode. And we love Sardonyx! What I love about fusion is...weirdly the math? lmao Think about Alexandrite. She comes from Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl; those are her component parts. So if Amethyst and Sardonyx fused... you'd still get Alexandrite. So you can kinda see those personality components. Amethyst is wild and less elegant, so she kind of balances out Sardonyx in a way where Alexandrite becomes more neutral. The same goes for Pearl and Sugilite; Pearl's poise and grace balances out the brutal and savage giant. OPAL AND GARNET make Alexandrite too. You could argue the two of them are both pretty balanced personalities, but in different ways, which could be why Alexandrite is so subdued. SU's version of fusion is FASCINATING and I love it so much.
WOOOO BOY!! And this begins some of the BEST episodes in the show right here! Wait until his Dad meets the sketchy guy from Greg’sList … Steve s is NOT going to like that square!
Ah, this show have such a good drama honestly. Also i think its first time i noticed this motiff of "people you see as better than you also have struggles", with how the episode starts as its more about Amethyst's self worth issues especially when compering herself to Pearl with the twist being that Pearl also have problems. Watching this reactions really reminds me why i genuinely think Steven Universe is propably one of the best animated shows
Stevens powers are controlled by his emotions. Connecting to others is apart of being in tune with your emotions, so he can connect to others via his dreams! At least, thats how i think it works, the connecting through dreams is true
It’s also easy to understand that Perl has been longing for Rose for such a long time. Being Fused with Garnet who herself admits is pure love. Is incredibly addictive for someone who had and lost a relationship.
Sardonyx is a reddish-brown gemstone with white bands that is made of alternating layers of sard and onyx. It is a type of chalcedony, a layered mineral, and is the birthstone for August.
Thank you for giving me something to look forward to Mosco! I love SU Thursday and Saturday. Best part of the week. Also yissss I love this stretch of eps! I can't believe Pearl LITERALLY dies for real!
15:40 "They're enjoying it far too much" Knowing their hstory, why wouldn't they? They trust and love each other, no shame in fusing with yoru bestie :}
If you go back to the episode where Pearl fixes Greg's van, you can see that he's so happy that he hugs her and Pearl is visibly disturbed by the experience. Clearly this caused some lingering trauma that she hasn't fully processed yet.
I love Amathyst, in the second episode, she felt so left out, alone and a screw up when Pearl and Garnet started fussing. However, when she realised what Pearl was doing, she wasn’t happy that Pearl had messed up too. She knew how badly Garnet would react and she understood why Pearl did it. Amathyst tried her best to defend Pearl even through she knew it was probably pointless. For all that we say that fusion can represent any sort of relationship; Pearl fussed under false pretences and violated Garnet’s trust.
this is the only episode that explains why they call themselves "the crystal gems". in peridot's message, she says "This is Peridot, transmitting on all frequencies from abandoned Crystal System colony planet Earth". earth is considered part of the "crystal system", and because they defend earth, they are the crystal gems
I think thinking of it in terms of s'x can actually help quite a lot with explaining why Pearl acted the way she did in "Cry For Help," I mean s'x is one of the highest highs our brains can possibly feel, so the idea of knowing someone that is *very* good at it, it could be very addicting to want to do it more, now just think about it instead of physical stimulation the emotional stimulation of temporarily being a part of a very stable relationship that is Garnet, knowing that love and closeness, but only having access to it temporarily, it can be quite painful to willingly pull away, I'm not saying to to imply in any way that what Pearl did was okay, I just feel it's very understandable especially for someone like Pearl, if you know you know.
A lot of fans were waiting for this fusion. At the time, the wiring schedule was kinda a mess and there were months between episodes. So her saying "was I worth the wait? Of course I was"! To me, is the crew nodding to us
We don't really dream in black and white either. Those are still colors. Dreams are formless, and they are filled in with color later when we are trying to recall them.
Something I wonder is. With most of the gems when they fuse you see more of an even mix of the two gems. But in garnet she looks mostly like ruby more than sapphire. I wonder why.
Technically, we don't even dream in images, nevermind colour. We dream in just. Information. Dreaming is more or less the brain sorting through a ton of completely random information, processing it all over the course of the night, but because it's all being done at once it creates strange, nonsense stories.
Steven was actually just having nightmares. Lapis and Jasper are revealed to have worked things out and just chill swimming through the ocean trying out being a copacetic fusion There was a very brief time where Garnet unfused, and Pearl fused with Sapphire while Amethyst fused with Ruby, because they’re similar in personality. This is why they love fusing with Garnet so much (in addition to feeling stronger like Amethyst said), it’s the closest they get to fusing with the individuals. Not that they don’t want the other to be involved, it’s just different types of connection
There's going to be a future episode where Connie's mom had to refer Pearl to a psychiatrist to discuss her Rose/Greg fusion dreams. It's...enlightening.
For people with self esteem issues, Garnet's self love is like a drug.
EXACTLYYYY
I feel called out
Fun fact: Malachite becomes toxic in water, which shows how unstable the fusion is just by its name. The fact that Malachite in the show is trapped underwater represents how Lapis and Jasper being fused together is toxic and tormenting for both of them.

Does she just really like geology?
That's such a cool fact. I've never knew about it, it love how well though out the gems are to each character and fusion.
D@mn, that adds a whole nother layer to that horrible fusion experience
I said this in the season 1 finale and said it was a representation of a abusive relationship
I think the most underrated tell of how badly Pearl messed up was Amethyst's reaction.
No outrage, no freakout. Just pure dread and despair.
Yeah. Usually Amethyst jumps at any chance to jab at Pearl, now she was just "Dude, no..."
Also because she immediately understands WHY she would do that.

Lol, 17:15 Amethyst's reaction when Steven moves her hair.
The music and the shot of Sugilite smashing the tower and the pieces falling in one punch is epic every time.
Oh my stars, you're starting one of my favourite Steven Bombs 😍❤️
Ask Elijah what's a Steven Bomb😙
Ohhh it's time, one of my favourite arcs in the whole show begins!
Also when the show is finally gonna start doing arcs, and it's a real treat!
I just realized we have to wait until season 3 before my favorite character actually gets to do something 😔
Wait Onion doesn’t show up till season 3?
6:46 I'd like to see a psychologist disect that!
10:24 The studio can't really afford that.
10:52 Uh oh... she has that same look for a fusion with Rose.
11:35 And here's my favorite fusion, Sardonyx! And she's supposed to be a cross between a Vegas magician and a Late Show host.
19:31 Can the budget afford this?
Just wait till the next episode 😊😊😊
What's said at 1:04 is hilarious! I'm dying right now! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Like you said, fusion is an intimacy thing. And Pearl manipulated Garnet into fusing with her.
LOL Emperor's New Groove much, love that movie!😂
"You threw off my groove!"
Gard
"I'm sorry but you've thrown off the Emperor's Groove"
God throws old man off of Palace
"sooooorryyyy!"
😂❤
Swinging by as usual from the Patreon to watch, upvote, comment, and feed the YT algorithm!
Wait u til you see the fusion of peridot with another gem. Funniest accident ever.
0:43 which is Exactly why she told you
Oh YES these episodes, but also OH NO these episodes.
It's a really fraught situation all around.
this is completely unrelated but i love the triforce necklace
So just a list of little things that I think you missed, forgot, or just what most of the fandom had figured out together by this point in the series (combo from a few reactions)
all gems can fuse, they don't have specific partners who only they can fuse with. any gem can fuse with any gem, so yes ruby or sapphire could fuse with the others
stable fusions are their own people. its not like ruby controlling one moment and sapphire the other, its just always entirely garnet. but when things break down and the fusion becomes less stable (like in emotional moments) the separate sides become more obvious.
unstable fusions like malichite and alexsandrite don't have their own personality because the stability is SO weak. things like the fusion having extra arms or eyes can be an indicator of a fusions stability but not always.
the gems took peridot's escape pod when steven found it, which is how pearl had it
the tower location was the same place we first saw sugilite, its kinda hard to recognise since we only saw the original was a big building looking thing and we only saw it for a few minutes
gems dont need to eat or breathe or do any other bodily stuff humans do. so they can all just go underwater and walk around but garnet and lapis are the only ones we've seen do it tho
gems also don't age physically so in the flashback episodes like one of the last fewwhere they look younger, they werent. its just a weird style thing, they are all just the same size n stuff as they are now making rose one TALL lady
Can't wait to see your reaction to the next episode. I won't spoil but you'll see just how much this messed with Garnet.
I love that you two are always together now! You're adorable together!
Ah, this show have such a good drama honestly. Also i think its first time i noticed this motiff of "people you see as better than you also have struggles", with how the episode starts as its more about Amethyst's self worth issues especially when compering herself to Pearl with the twist being that Pearl also have problems. Watching this reactions really reminds me why i genuinely think Steven Universe is propably one of the best animated shows
Pearl's panicky "No! no no no no no no!", really conveys that she is legitimately scared.
I can't wait!! There's SO many amazing story beats and character moments, I'm so excited for you to experience them!!
Stevens powers are controlled by his emotions. Connecting to others is apart of being in tune with your emotions, so he can connect to others via his dreams! At least, thats how i think it works, the connecting through dreams is true
Also, love how you're noticing all the milk references. Subtle foreshadowing for the upcoming farming arc-- its a fan fav ;)
It’s also easy to understand that Perl has been longing for Rose for such a long time. Being Fused with Garnet who herself admits is pure love. Is incredibly addictive for someone who had and lost a relationship.
It's absolutely personal cuz it feels like garnet being used , especially when it's fusion,
Sardonyx is a reddish-brown gemstone with white bands that is made of alternating layers of sard and onyx. It is a type of chalcedony, a layered mineral, and is the birthstone for August.
2:45
I mean a life jacket would be kinda useless to someone who can’t drown
Thank you for giving me something to look forward to Mosco! I love SU Thursday and Saturday. Best part of the week.
Also yissss I love this stretch of eps! I can't believe Pearl LITERALLY dies for real!
15:40 "They're enjoying it far too much" Knowing their hstory, why wouldn't they? They trust and love each other, no shame in fusing with yoru bestie :}
Elijah: I'm sorry...
Mosco: No your not! >:(
"This is a lot, happening right here" describes at least 1/3 of the entire series.
OMG OMG YES YES! My favourite fusion!! I’m so happy for these episodes but sad for what lies ahead. Big Pearl fan, but she fudged up big time!
oh the sardonix arc
If you go back to the episode where Pearl fixes Greg's van, you can see that he's so happy that he hugs her and Pearl is visibly disturbed by the experience. Clearly this caused some lingering trauma that she hasn't fully processed yet.
Another reason why Pearl did it, is because even after “Coach Steven”, Pearl still sees herself weak, and wants to be strong.
I think Sugilite was so angry wasn’t just because Garnet was angry but it Amythest was also upset with Pearl, not as much but still
You just made my night I was hoping you would post I’m so glad you cheer me up
Lapis ain't fusing with anyone after her experience with Jasper
Too much trauma
FINALLY ONE OF MY FAVOURITE EPISODE))
this is the only episode that explains why they call themselves "the crystal gems". in peridot's message, she says "This is Peridot, transmitting on all frequencies from abandoned Crystal System colony planet Earth". earth is considered part of the "crystal system", and because they defend earth, they are the crystal gems
I always loved Cry For Help simply because it's a mirror of Sugilite's episode!!
Love the different attributes of the fusions, Sugilite brute strength, Sardonyx showmanship.
A lot of fans were waiting for this fusion. At the time, the wiring schedule was kinda a mess and there were months between episodes. So her saying "was I worth the wait? Of course I was"! To me, is the crew nodding to us
Spoiler: Garnet is a fusion 😮
We don't really dream in black and white either. Those are still colors. Dreams are formless, and they are filled in with color later when we are trying to recall them.
saw this when desperately looking for something to watch 🙏
also amethyst is secretly a ditto in disguise from the pokemon universe
Can't wait for her to realize that Stevens dream powers are foreshadowing that he's been in a coma the whole show
Something I wonder is. With most of the gems when they fuse you see more of an even mix of the two gems. But in garnet she looks mostly like ruby more than sapphire. I wonder why.
Loved the sitcom fantasy and Sardonyx is perhaps my favorite fusion
WOOO!!!! The best batch of episodes by far, i'm so excited
everyone say: thank you elijaaaaah
the sardonyx ep is a personal favorite… but the next few ones are incredible!! can’t wait for your next reactions ❤
Sardonyx is one of my favorite fusions!
Lapis and Jasper are revealed to have worked things out and just chill swimming through the ocean trying out being a copacetic fusion
There was a very brief time where Garnet unfused, and Pearl fused with Sapphire while Amethyst fused with Ruby, because they’re similar in personality.
