A nice touch with Open Book is that while Connie is in the costume store, she points out that the tunic is supposed to be black rather than the red Steven had imagined. But when Cloud Connie comes out, she's wearing red anyway. Then later when real Connie shows back up, she's wearing an outfit that's far more accurate to how _she_ imagined Lisa.
Strawberries grow in mineral rich soil. And some of those strawberries are enormous. So many gems were shattered on these sites and trod into the earth by the continued fighting that even 5000 years later the soil still provides nutrients for the berry fields. T_T
I've long theorized that the reason the strawberries are so huge is because they were Rose's version of Steven's watermelon people, that that's what Pearl was talking about when she mentioned Rose making plant soldiers. Never confirmed though.
And this comes immediately after Pearl asking if there's any Rose left in Steven. Him saying that could be interpreted by Pearl as Rose saying it... giving her the validation and love that she craved.
There's a funny bit about this episode in other countries. In a lot of European languages, the word for scabbard is a synonym for vagina. Pearl goes on and on about Rose's vagina. 😅

Yooooooo we're so close to jailbreak! Watching ur reactions to the first episodes feels so recent, can't believe we're near the end of Season 1 already!
I have an unpopular head-canon about Rose's Scabbard, and it doesn't include any spoilers for future episodes, it's something I said at the time, got shouted down for, but still believe: Pearl ran away to this particular place, one of the highest places above the earth and dangled her feet off the edge. Specifically because she was so shaken by the revelation that Rose kept secrets even from her that she was planning on killing herself. That's why she didn't rush to rescue Steven, she was already that cut off from the world, that deep in her own head, in her own misery. That when Steven hugged her and said, "Well, I think you're pretty great," the reason she tears up so hard is that that was what pulled her back from the brink. "Brad, you have an evil mind. Pearl would never do that." Yeah, I've known plenty of suicidal people in my life, was suicidal myself for a long time. I don't think I'm wrong.
This is about the last episodes: I don't think it's implied that Amethyst and Greg had a physical thing. I mean, Amethyst probably has experimented physically, there is a lot of evidence of her being a very physical creature, delighting in her body in a way that gems just generally don't. She eats, she wrestles, she just gets down and dirty in a way that the other gems seem generally above. I think this is tied into her feelings of otherness, of differentiating herself, of being an Earthling in a way that the other gems aren't. But with Greg? I think it was implied that they developed a mutually toxic friendship to deal with their grief over Rose.
Rose's scabbard is hands down one of my favourite episodes. Pearl's "you haven't even met her" followed by rose's painting almost falling on her, the "what would she think of me now?" "I think you're pretty great", the scene of steven cheering up Pearl after their heart to heart, with pearl being enthusiastic about sharing her stories from the war once steven pulls out Rose's flag. It always manages to hit my feels. Also I've always seen the part where garnet stays quiet until steven is gone as her seeing the future and knowing that if anyone but steven alone tried to get pearl back, it would've gone horribly. Spoiler time, steven says he needs a huge weapon all the time at the beginning of the episode, teasing at the reveal that he was actually Rose's nemesis from the future that came back in time to kill all the remaining gems on earth. When pearl holds her mouth shut when steven asks her "pearl, please talk to me" is because she was hit with a curse that forbids her from explaining plot points that the fandom really wants to know. The "real" connie we leave the room with is another fake, but nobody ever notices so the real Connie is still happily waiting, night after night for someone to come back and help her. Lastly, the books steven and Connie are reading actually spoil the ending of the 16th season of steven universe (luckily it hasn't been released yet)
It's such a choice to have Pearl shown to be so confident, poised, and elegant, with just the occasional dash of neurotic, so that you can have moments like this, where she completely and utterly breaks down. Now that I think about it, they pull the same trick with Amethyst and Garnet; Amethyst is always a slovenly, wise-cracking layabout, so those moments - like at the Kindergarten - when her emotional trauma is revealed are so much more shocking. And Garnet is always rigid and sturdy, so those moments where... ah, shall we say, emotions come out... they feel deeply, viscerally important.
Small point I want to raise, just as a reminder since we've seen Pearl get poofed. Gems don't have gems. Gems are gems. Gems have bodies. I'd say more, but this clarification was intended to confuse before it clarifies and further explaining myself would undermine that.
Rose's Scabbard always blows my mind, especially one specific artistic choice in the very last scene. Here's the thing: I am fully convinced that in any other American kids' show, during that last scene with Steven and Pearl on Lion's back, when Pearl looks briefly down at Steven and then back up again? She would smile, at least faintly. Nope. Not in this show. Her expression remains utterly bleak as she stares forward once more, and that choice -- that lack of narrative reassurance for the young audience -- is honestly one of the most ballsy and unexpected things I think I've seen on television.
This episode never gets easier to watch... The more you know, the worse it huts. Much like when you get to the episode where Garnet & Pearl eecount a battle they had against enemy general Malachite.

Rose's Scabbard was combined with the last four episodes of season one to create the first "StevenBomb": five new episodes shown on a Monday-through-Friday basis instead of one episode per week. Linking RS with the season finale amplified the emotional power of Rose's Scabbard (which would have dissipated a bit had the original intended order been followed, with stories intervening that had little or nothing to do with the business of the finale). The StevenBomb finale episodes began with Rose's Scabbard, and will pick up with The Message. You'll understand why the internet was broken when this StevenBomb ends. "If we lose, we'll be killed; and if we win, we can never go home." This line still hits me, and reminds me of the high stakes the Crystal Gems were fighting for. Pearl's holographic recording appears to be from the very beginning of the war, so this implies that Rose Quartz and Pearl were the original Crystal Gems, and Rose was likely their leader. If she was, it's no wonder that GAP still hold Rose Quartz in awe, and leaving aside Pearl's special feelings for her. When Steven first saw Pearl after he managed to reach the top of the floating rock, you could see that he was pretty mad at her, but when seconds later he sees how upset she was he instantly reverted to Caring Steven. Steven was so excited and impatient about seeing Connie cosplay that he didn't notice that "Connie" came out with her cloak in a color that he should have known was wrong from the conversation just moments before (red rather than black). Very subtle indication from the Crewniverse that something was off right from the get go.
Re: Rose and Greg, part of the reason Pearl's feelings are so complicated toward him is that she was the one who dated him first and Rose "stole" him. There's much more that I'm skipping over, but that's the gist of it.
I love Rose’s Scabbard because I think we can all relate to Peal’s infatuation to Rose. Even if it’s possibly one sided and probably not as close as you’d want it to be, you don’t just get over your feelings for them as easily as that. Plus the way she say Steven reminds her of Rose… That’s just so tragic. 😢
The music for Rose's Scabbard is still one of my favorites ❤ Whenever I hear it, it makes me feel like I'm reminiscing about something good... that I can never have
Jailbreak reveals that steven is actually a psychotic 40 year old serial killer who is just imagining these adventures. He is broken out by his crew who are all voiced by the gems.
I like how in season 2 we shift between the truth and his delusions. Each episode is a mystery, will it be a Steven delusion or a serial killer episode?
Rose's Scabbard is a fantastic lore drop. The show never gives us confirmation on Pearl's theory, that Rose can see through Steven's eyes to an extent (some would argue we do get confirmation, one way or the other, but they're wrong lol) and that's what makes the "well...I think you're pretty great" at the end so powerful. Because if you subscribe to the theory that Rose is in there, you can see that statement as her influencing Steven to comfort Pearl on her behalf. And if you believe the opposite, that it's all Steven, then there's still someone in the world who loves Pearl. The audience doesn't know, but Pearl doesn't either, but it's comforting either way, and that's beautiful. Way back in the day, someone on Tumblr took the music that plays over that scene (the track is called 'I'm Still Here') and wrote lyrics for them from Pearl's perspective, and it's really beautiful. Anyway, can't wait for the reveal that Lion is Pearl and Rose's secret love child that Rose kept from her, making him Steven's half brother and Pearl's idiot son.
fun fact about the doppelganger Connie, if you pay attention to some of the chatting real Connie and Steven had you will hear the differences in how each person imagined the equipment that the Character got during the story, that's why Steven's conjuration of doppelganger Connie looked different than the real Connie because they had imaginations when it came to what each piece of gear would look like.
oh yeah, THIS is SU's snowball era. as in, it feels like the quality and lore details are just building up and gaining momentum like a snowball down a hill. just like the one which will smash through the Delmarva State Prison, freeing dozens of the imprisoned anti-gem extremists in the S1 Finale, Jailbreak
I always had (& still do have) a soft spot for Pearl, she was my favorite character from the beginning because while she is deeply talented, loyal, intelligent, and committed to her beliefs/morals, she's also deeply flawed in how overconfident, pompous, and insufferable those traits can make you. Her devotion to Rose is equal parts love and respect which is such a powerful combination of feelings it's no wonder she self destructs every time she has to try and face them. Her personal journey across the arcs of this show and Future (the sequel series to this one) will always be my favorite thing about the entire series.
We’re almost to the reveal that Garnet was a general in the gem empire at one point. That’s why she’s so big and why she has futurevision . After all, clairvoyance is one of the best superpowers a military leader could ever ask for: legendary strategist Sun Tzu made a huge deal about the importance of having good intelligence networks for a reason, and supernaturally seeing possible futures largely accomplishes the same thing with a far lower resource investment.
It's probably a good thing most of the community would rather torture you with another "crickey" situation than actually spoil you. Tho the urge to just quietly point at something or let you know when something _isn't_ important is pretty strong. In any case Steven's such an innocent bean. Probably too much for his own good. Connie's a good balance for that.
4:10 She did actually have three. You're gonna love Nora! You are correct about Rose and Pearl through, most people actually misundstand it. Pearl was obsessed with Rose, she practically existed to serve her. Rose was close with her, but not in the same way.
It is obvious what the origin of Lion is. Remember how Lapis was a gem stuck yo a mirror? Well, Lion is a gem stuck to a chest. A very ornate chest. Pearl doesn't know about Lion because Rose got him one day while antiquing. Pearl was making lunch at the time. Why was she making lunch? That was the fay Rose wanted to experiment with eating. Led to a whole adventure that ends with Pearl swearing to never eat again.
The wedding dress was actually foreshadowing! In a future episode, Steven has to prevent another Gem war from happening by marrying Connie and Garnet officiates the wedding.
It took me a while to get it too, but Connie was in a wedding dress because the book ended in a wedding(Lisa the character Connie was playing was getting married), that’s why when he revealed he liked the ending that Connie disappeared.
Ohhhhhhh my god this is the first time I’ve seen rose’s scabbard since finishing the show and yeah pearl’s crashout here actually makes a lot of sense!
Can't wait for the episode pearl talking to Steven while she was doing backflips and frontflips and start glitching like it's normal while Steven is just eating chips!
Jailbreak is really important to the story, Connie gets abducted by some new gems and they're gonna learn A LOOOOTTTT about them while trying to escape
Pearl actually had a messy breakup with Rose after Rose had a fling with JFK. They eventually became friends again, but Pearl never got over her feelings.

Plus the thing with Amethyst. Greg gets around.
@@elbruces I guess you could say Greg's relationships are rocky.
@@elbruces I remember it was a meme for a while that he had gotten with all the gems at some point. I don't think anyone expected it to be true
Rose probably had to ask" "Pearl, you have to tell me what's wrong" many times over the millennia.
I was waiting for this one !
Rose's scabbard is probably my favourite episode of the whole show
This show loves to drip feed you lore on tiny drop at a time, often leaving you more questions than it answers
Many Moons into the future, Connie and Steven form an animation studio called Mirweb. Stevonnie was the VT(Vocal Thespian) for one of their character.
It's okay I think a lot of us thought the same thing about the wedding dress. it was an intentional bait and switch
It's amazing... she makes a big deal about how she's not understanding, and then Mosco says some things that are just like... uh, put a pin in that.
The end of Season One is one of the highlights of the entire series imo so I’ve very excited that you’re almost there
fun fact about the doppelganger Connie, if you pay attention to some of the chatting real Connie and Steven had you will hear the differences in how each person imagined the equipment that the Character got during the story, that's why Steven's conjuration of doppelganger Connie looked different than the real Connie because they had imaginations when it came to what each piece of gear would look like.
oh yeah, THIS is SU's snowball era. as in, it feels like the quality and lore details are just building up and gaining momentum like a snowball down a hill. just like the one which will smash through the Delmarva State Prison, freeing dozens of the imprisoned anti-gem extremists in the S1 Finale, Jailbreak
Wait till she finds out that greg and rose played rock paper scissors over keeping lion biggest plot twist 😮
You are so smart, I love watching your reaction because you always guess what's going on
I still think about the Rose's Scabbard episode, all these years later. 💔
Your investment in Pearl's and Rose's dynamic is going to pay off BIG TIME!
Now now, don't go spoiling Peter Gabriel's cameo in the "Sledgehammer" episode!
The show's already been great up to now, but this is one of those episodes where it REALLY feels like it's "grown up" a bit from where it began.
4:10
She did actually have three. You're gonna love Nora!
You are correct about Rose and Pearl through, most people actually misundstand it. Pearl was obsessed with Rose, she practically existed to serve her. Rose was close with her, but not in the same way.
Pearl has a secret rap career
This better be true. I'll be upset if its not
@@ThomasSH 🎵 Round and round🎵
Lion is important because hes actually a fusion of a pink sapphire and a random alley cat and our rose adopted him cause shes so nice 😉
You will get answers to these questions. Some not until season five. You have a roller coaster ahead. I look forward to your reactions
Love how excited she is about Jailbreak when it’s actually just about Greg committing tax fraud
It's too bad Steven reverts to his egg form before he's able to confess his feelings for Connie.
Ohhhhhhh my god this is the first time I’ve seen rose’s scabbard since finishing the show and yeah pearl’s crashout here actually makes a lot of sense!
It isn't just this show, but I love how close some of your guesses are and yet so far off.
Omg! Hi! So my sister won't stop talking about you after seeing ya by that train! She's so happy she got to meet you.
(I'm her sister btw)
I cry almost every time I watch "Rose's Scabbard"
Each episode is just getting better and better
"Stay innocent Steven, never change" 👀
Can't wait for the episode pearl talking to Steven while she was doing backflips and frontflips and start glitching like it's normal while Steven is just eating chips!
Jailbreak is really important to the story, Connie gets abducted by some new gems and they're gonna learn A LOOOOTTTT about them while trying to escape
Pearl actually had a messy breakup with Rose after Rose had a fling with JFK. They eventually became friends again, but Pearl never got over her feelings.
Just wait till Steven finds out that Rose had thousands of gems that were all lost or given up during the war.
