And when Moana went through that storm in the sea, she woke up alive at an island. She could've drowned but she had the heart of Tefiti. When Moana jumped into the undersea world, she hit the rocks like a rag doll... yet she lived,
The "drug" (as you called it) that they put in the songs of this movie was Lin Manuel Miranda. He is great. And I hate to disagree with you, but even the song "Shiny" was great.
"How would you explain Moana to someone?" Just a girl. A boat. A chicken. And a dream 😂 *edit: please don't take this seriously. It's like when people give really simply/poor descriptions of a movie. For instance - Hereditary: a group of people helping their friend transition
@@DragonLover-ns2dyif i’m remembering correctly, they actually planned for him to be in the entire trip too, but they didn’t have enough time to animate both of the animals. i could honestly be thinking about a completely different film, so don’t take my word as truth lol
Way more than that if you can figure out the basic details of Moana's story. A young determined heroine that wanted to save her country by apologizing to Tefiti and returning her heart to her because she didn't want their jungle landscapes to disappear. Moana's tribe had the idea that they'd lose more of their islands if Tefiti became angry again, so Moana tried hard with patience to prove to Tefiti that trouble wasn't her intention. Maui's tattoos are supposed to be his history in pictures.
@@niallnochill Always so interesting how music, especially, can hit people differently. "Shiny" was one of my favorite songs from Moana, while you didn't like it. Like you, however, I *really* enjoyed all the song lyrics in Tuvalu, and that exposure to Polynesian culture!
My favorite thing about Te Fiti also being a lava monster is that volcanic soil is actually what makes Polynesian islands so lush and fertile! So it makes total sense that she can be both such a giver of life and a scary, dangerous creature - the takeaway is that we should totally respect and take care of our natural resources and not destroy or take unnecessarily from them or we risk upsetting the balance of nature 💚
the scene at the end with moana and te ka hits so hard as an allegory for women’s rage and pain after being abused or taken advantage of. I literally start tearing up preemptively when I know it’s coming, it just triggers such a deep emotional reaction. It’s such a beautiful amazing scene.
I'm honestly so surprised this film didn't get you crying, because the granny ghost visiting her after she gave the heart back to the sea and the I AM MOANAAAAAA will always make me BAWLLLLLL girl
it made me think of all the times i lashed out at the people who were only trying to help me because of my trauma, i am so lucky they saw what Moana did but this movie is what made me realize it, I did a lot of thanking to a lot of people after this movie ♥
Lin Manuel Miranda (hamilton) wrote the songs for this! Moana's dad's singing is voiced by Christopher Jackson who is Washington in Hamilton. Loved your reaction
I watched this initially surrounded by Islanders. There were a few other families in the theater with us, and the Pacific Northwest has a lot of Hawaiians, people from Tahiti, Samoa, New Zealand. At the end of the movie the parents were all teary-eyed, listening to the last song, full of pride.
You're actually the only reactor I've watched who came in already knowing about that big break in Polynesian voyaging. I learned about it because of this movie 🤷♀️ I find it so intriguing!
I noticed this before, the animators did such a great job on making something like the ocean, without any face or body, be so sassy, or frustrated, or happy like how long did it take them to do that part to perfection🥴
I love moana so much! I had just watched the second one yesterday and almost cried because of seeing Polynesian culture and being represented in cinema. 💞💞Lowkey made me homesick 😪😪
the scene where moana sings to te ka and is walking across the ocean floor... literally my favorite singular scene maybe ever. the visuals. the sound of the song. the lyrics of the song. the many meanings that could be pulled from it. the entire story of the movie leading up to and coming after it... ive yet to see something better tbh
Some interpret this show as a metaphor for women saving women after a man wrongs them. Maui, a man, would be interpreted as the perpetrator as he takes something precious from Te Fiti which leaves her unraveled and in despair. Moana, who sees her pain and emphasizes with her, lowers her guard and shows compassion towards Te Fiti, unlike Maui who consistently tries to bring her down. After Moana shows her compassion and quite literally restored her heart, Te Fiti heals and goes back to her old self
I third this! I love that movie! Definitely both a feel good and a bit of a cry movie at some points! I’m glad it’s getting attention. The animation is so great and the story is really interesting.
the way you kept hating on "Shiny" broke me lol it's one of my favorite songs from the movie! I'm glad you at least came around on Hei Hei, though, haha 🤩
omg i know exactlyyyy what u mean by not appreciating these newer disney movies on a first watch! i didn't enjoy the live action 2015 cinderella and thought it was cheesy but as an adult rewatching it i sobbbed, it had such a positive message 😭
Shiny is one of the best songs in the movie, the voice actor for Tamatoa is such a great vocalist and the song itself is so well written. I love the animation, especially when they switch to bioluminescent. It is truly one of the greatest villain songs from a character that isn't even the actual villain of the movie. My other favorite song from the movie is the is "We Know the Way" so great and I love that Lin Manuel Miranda does the voice for the Chief in that song.
Some cool things you might not have noticed, is at the beginning of the movie the first monster that is drawn when her dad says there are no monsters, is Elsa from Frozen’s Creation, and when Moana packs to leave, we see a melted Olaf with her supplies in the boat, and lastly at the end of the movie the first flower to gain life again was Rapunzel’s magic flower. Also there is an end credit scene where the Crab (Tamatoa) mentions Sebastian from The Little Mermaid.
Fun fact an actual person voiced hei hei, his name is Alan Tudyk. Also Disney did a good job with diversity in the people that voiced the characters and are representative of the cultures shown. The Rock is Samoan and they based the design of Maui off of his grandfather, who was a Samoan wrestler if I recall correctly. Disney’s did really well on this film, I only hope that the sequel will be just as thought out.
I didn't twig to it the first time, but Grandma was supposed to be dead a while ago. She was holding the Heart though, so she stayed active and alive. As SOON as she gives it up she sits down hard and her age catches up fast.
I didn't really like Shiny either, until I read that Lin Manuel Miranda was listening to a lot of David Bowie when he wrote it. After listening to it again through that lens, I get it now.
Glad you liked this one. Moana is really a beautiful film, and out of all disney movies, it's one I recommend people watch in a theater if it ever gets brought back. Her final walk toward Tafiti near the end, the theater vibrates with the music and it is truly an experience.

While she helped her people, it was assisted by her own desire to explore.

I know that you usually do reactions on movies or shows but I was wondering if you would do a reaction on the musical Epic. It is not a movie per se but a bunch of music that tells a story, specifically the Greek Odyssey. Many people have made animatics to them so you can see the characters come to life and I think you would enjoy listening to it so much. The reason why Moana’s grandma died immediately after giving Moana the heart of tefiti was because the heart was KEEPING HER ALIVE
.i never thought about that😢😢
And when Moana went through that storm in the sea, she woke up alive at an island. She could've drowned but she had the heart of Tefiti.
When Moana jumped into the undersea world, she hit the rocks like a rag doll... yet she lived,
OH MY GOSH?? You just blew my mind
yeah i thought that was sort of implied throughout the movie. te fiti started dying without the heart, and so did moana’s grandmother
Why didn't you capitalize Tefiti?
Maui's tattoo about his parents throwing him in the ocean is on his back. It's quite literally his BACK story 😅
Omg
Oh god😂😂
Brilliant. I'm using this from now on!
Omg I’m dead

Agree Shiny is a bop!
THANK YOU I WAS ABOUT TO SAY, WDYM THAT'S ONE OF THE GREATEST VILLIAN SONGS WE'VE HAD IN AWHILE
Saint WAS a great song, But I've recently fallen in love with the Jonathan Young cover of it.
Shiny is LMM's crack at a David Bowie/Ziggy Stardust style song. The artist who sings it gives it a very Tim Curry vibe.
