    I learned a lot from that term “pigment pushers” that you often use. I am getting better blends by “pushing” and releasing the brush where I want the color to land. My transition buildups are a lot stronger since I really applied this.

    When I started painting my White Scars, the realisation that made everything easier was that I'm mostly painting greys and shadows, and only use pure white for surprisingly few parts of the model (and usually on the top of the head, backpack and shouders).

    I watch so many of the newer painters around me struggle with white as well. Sometimes even with good advice, they still do the same thing: keep blobbing white on until they get an uneven and chalky mess, followed by complaining about white. The secret is to not paint white at all, but the illusion of white. Use off-white colors that coat well, alternate warm and cool if you want, and then save the true white for final glazes and edge highlights. It takes very little skill up front - though doing this is practice, and practicing will improve the skill - and yields a very "clean" and bright white (that you can later add damage and chipping to if you want). It is also easier than trying to layer white over and over again, and no chalky finish as you are using very little of the actual white pigment.

    My cheat code for white is basecoat Kantor Blue and spray white from above. Easy ice cold white. You might get some speckleing but you can mitigate it by using white ink or a heavily thinned heavy body acrylic.

    I got a bit of an artistic background (been having evening weekly drawing courses with an actual drawing teacher for a few years now, I'm still not very good at it for the time spent learning but I know a few things at least), so I already knew for the fact that pure white is never fully white. White has shadows of colors, but this apply to every color in fact: a colored surface will reflect a slightly different color where shadows are cast (like in the recesses) and another one where raised edges catch light.
    Also, a tip from personal observations: those colors are often slightly next to eachother on the color wheel (like an analogous colors pattern). Let's take for instance a golden armor: the base gold tone is something around a warm yellow. So, it wouldn't be surprising to see an orangey color (more orange than the base tone) in the recesses and a lemon yellow (more yellow than the base tone, opposite to the orange tone in the recesses) on the raised edges.

    I think it's just a general lack of knowledge. We expect paint to work as we paint it on, but we forget all the various factors, such as pigment quality, thin/thickness, undercoat, etc. It's very easy to over think things and generally when I first started using white I desired a kind of chalkiness as it gave the red top coat colors a muddled disorganized colorization that looked good. At least for my painting skills back when I was a teen. Now having been away from the hobby for 10 years and having been through graphic design school, I have a much more matured approach for applying layers and color schemes that requires a bit of knowledge, a bit of experience, and most importantly patience. Thank you for the lessons.

    example 1: spend 10 hours blending from dark blue to white using 6 different colors with different mixes which will result in inconsistent miniatures and an eternity to paint 1 army.

    Can you share some insights on the gloss varnish and the pin wash with oils? I tried it several times, but the gloss varnish did not work well or the consistency of the oil pinwash is wrong. The result is always a messed up oil pinwashing, where the oil do not only stays in the recesses, but also besides them. It mostly looks messy.

    Do you ever airbrush straight white? I have a lot of trouble doing it so is there any advice because no matter how much I thin it it still wont flow smoothly.... and does the silver grey go through the airbrush more easily easily?
    My normal painting method is to prime grey, zenithal white, controlled wash over the model and then reapply white with a brush...

    • @bat33.12
      @bat33.12 Год назад +1

      pick up some white acrylic ink, Daler Rowney FW is ideal, and because it is so much finer pigment and a higher amount of pigment than any acrylic white paint it airbrushes easily. You can thin it with normal airbrush thinner or better still just thin it with vallejo flow improver. There's a bit of a learning process to using this but you can lay down very thin layers and still have good coverage without risk of pebble dash finish from course pigmented acrylic white paint.

    It's the white _value_ that makes for chalkiness, not white _pigment_? 😅Is this interpretation correct @trovarion? I had always assumed the advice "don't use much white" was about titanium white itself making for chalkiness. I've tried to use non-white pigments for tinting my mini's main colors and avoid premixed colors with a ton of white, but it's always a bit awkward for the highest highlights.
