- When guitar collector Barry Gaskell contacted the show to say he might have found John Lennon's original 1959 Hofner Club 40 guitar that was sold in Hamburg in 1960, we just had to include it on the show. Barry is still researching the guitars authenticity, so if any of you guys out their can help, then please get in touch.

Hello folks.
The back of the neck (and headstock) was painted black on Lennon's (by the factory) and his didn't have the KF badge on the tailpiece either. Close though!
I inherited my Dad's 1957 Hofner Club 40 and it looks more like John's guitar than the one in this clip ! It's absolutely beautiful. Purchased in Matchettes in Belfast in 1957. He played in a show band back then with Teddy Palmer. they were called The Beathavens.
John left Hamburg on December 7th 1960.
The plaque in the case is suggesting that John sold this Hofner Club 40 to pay his fare back to Liverpool. Not true.
This isn't John's Hofner Club 40.
How does this guy know John didn’t have any money. There was a rumour that John sold the club 40 for the deposit for the 325 but as Paul is seen playing the club 40 with John on the Rickenbacker, that’s also proved incorrect.
Lennon’s Hofner 40 wasn’t purchased in Hamburg, but actually in Liverpool. It was purchased from Hessy’s music store. John worked as a construction worker in the summer of 1959 to save up enough money to get it. Imagine John Lennon as a construction worker...The price was 30 pounds and he paid 17 pounds as a down payment on it.
ive still got my dads club 40 from 1958 ,with all original paperwork
Keep it safe!

Very good to watch and listen to.
The receipt from Hessy's Music for John's "Club Footy" is reproduced in Andy Babiuk's fabulous book, Beatles Gear. It gives John's occupation as "Student," and says Mimi made the payments on it because "Son in Germany." Mimi made the 17 pound down payment on 8/28/59. Total cost of the guitar at that time looks like 30 pounds/9, including a 2 pound/2 service charge for paying in installments. It was paid in full with a 14 pound payment on 7/31/60. I do not see a serial number for the guitar on this receipt. Don't forget that Paul McCartney also played this guitar, re-strung for a left-hander, before they sold it. Paul is holding it in Astrid Kirchherr's iconic picture of the five of them at the fairground.
They made about 400 of these in 59. So it must be somewhere.
you should have played Sheik of araby
John's did NOT have the KH (karl hofner) badge on tailpiece if I'm not mistaken.
trop cool ....Superbe Guitare
Hi, interesting video. I have recently come into posession of a 59/60 club 40 which is very similar to the one in the your video. Trying to get some info on it and or contact with someone like barry gaskell who can help possibly. Thanks :)
Hi Paul, thanks for watching. You can contact us at BRG@lancashireone.com with what you would like to know and we will pass your questions on to Barry.
Contact me for info.
I own one of these.
What is the serial number? ("blind-stamped" at the top of the headstock rear)
It is now known that John gave his Club40 to Mal Evans in the 1960's and Mal's son still has it.
Everyone is super knowledgeable about John Lennon's 1st guitar
It´s not Johns Hofner. I have one reissue: neck and headstock are black, the body is higher.
Hi Stu, The clip has everyone talking. The guitar came via the Liverpool project. No more information as yet. Thanks for watching.
I've never seen a club 40 with a body as thin as this one John's included.
It was a bit of a surprise for me too!
You obviously have a serial number to date this guitar to 1959, so why not check it against the serial number on the hire purchase agreement that Mimi paid the £17 deposit on.
1000 pounds my ass... show me a club 40 for a thousand pounds and hit me up.
That guy doesn't know he's dead lmao
