  • A viewer of the channel recently alerted me to a new old stock, mint condition case for my 1967 Hofner G459VTZ Super Beatle 6-string hollowbody violin guitar that was being sold online. It inspired me to drag it out of storage and do some much needed work on it. We'll tackle some fretwork, shim the neck, restring, and demo it. We'll also talk about the history of these rare and fascinating models.
The 459 model series, included the 459, 459TZ, and 459 VTZ. They were introduced in 1967 and featured some of the earliest active circuitry for electric guitar. The active circuit, which runs off a 9-volt battery, has a Treble Boost and Fuzz built in.
Fuzzy psychedelic rock was all the rage in 1967, and in that respect, the Hofner 459 models should have been a success. But the soaring high price tag and stiff competition from better positioned American brands like Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, and Rickenbacker meant the models didn't sell well and were discontinued after a few short years.

There are several Hofner Guitars in San Francisco’s little kingdom of guitars
Real Guitars @15 Lafayette Street in San Francisco.
There, you’ll find a constellation of five shops crammed into one building, the oldest of which has been running for over 30 years. The owners and operators of this institution have held onto their lease and clientele by serving the local music community and maintaining a special vibe.
This little kingdom of guitars is tucked away on an alley off one of the busiest intersections in the city. Jesse Cobb grew up here and describes the place as “a nondescript building on a rather isolated, dirty street.” Jesse’s dad, Chris Cobb, owns a part of this kingdom.
Real Guitars co-owner Ben Levin says unlike other shops, this place is like a community center. “People just come by and talk politics and movies and TV with us and just hang out,” he says, “we’re like a corner store.”
The first thing you walk into is Real Guitars. Open since February 1986, it’s the oldest vintage guitar shop in the city.
Cobb walks me through the shop. We maneuver past stacks upon stacks of amplifiers. Guitar pedals and parts ooze out of what Chris jokingly calls the office. The place has so much character, Woody Allen filmed a scene for the film “Blue Jasmine” here.
“We need a bigger space but it just wouldn’t be right if we moved anywhere else but where we are,” says Cobb. “It’s the kind of shop I went to as a teenager in the ‘70s.”

That just reminded I forgot to pickup my spinwinder: having something that winds around the bobbin in lieu of the bobbin being the moving item itself is so much better for equal tension around an irregular pickup coil that this would require

I initially wasn’t impressed with it as it was in pretty rough shape (frets needed some serious work, and it was grungy as heck, wouldn’t stay in tune at all), but I was pleasantly surprised when it was all done. The thing stays in tune really well and sounds pretty good.

The indentations on the back of the neck may have been made by the neck support in a case that had the padding worn off and the wood exposed. Those type of marks are exactly like ones I have on a guitar I bought that had worn down the neck support in its case. But those marks could have happened just from leaning it up against an amp or something. I just can't see how a capo would make marks like that. Capos are designed a lot better than that. Maybe some kind of home-made jobbie. But I think there would be marks from the 1st fret up to about the 9th fret, maybe higher, if a capo WERE the culprit.
I sure wish there was an easy way to get the back of the neck smoothed out on my '82 Ibanez Musician 550.
That Höfner is one beautiful, vintage guitar!! I imagine it's hard to determine its worth, for insurance purposes only! I'd NEVER sell that guitar, except for maybe a trillion dollar bill!!

    • @TheGuitologist
      @TheGuitologist  3 года назад +1

A zero fret ensures the timbre of the open strings will match the fretted notes. It also makes more consistent string action possible from 0 to 1. It has the added advantage of being easier to build because you don't have to carve a nut perfectly, you just level a 0 fret to the rest of the frets and slot the nut with no regard to slot depth.

You should use a tapered shim under the neck as a thin shim at the heel of the neck will cause the neck to drop just past the shim making the last few frets hump up and buzz out. It takes time for the hump to develop but without even support the neck will hump when shimmed with a thin shim at the heel, that’s what the paper was doing, kinda .

Never knew of that guitar before this. Thanks for the vid.👍 I trust you in that there was no way to quickly remove it but, I would've liked to see some explanation of how that trem arm was attached. Many crazy things came out of the sixties lol.
BTW who was singing the song about "numb/or dumb on a plane"?? As usual Shazam was useless.

Nice version of on a plane. One of my favorite tunes. I really enjoyed this video as always. Guitar sounds incredible as always too. Is that a Peterson strobe tuner on top of your amp?

Removing those slots on the zero fret SEEMS it would have the same effect as lowering the nut on a guitar without a zero fret.
Any issues with the first few frets buzzing afterward, or did it not matter given your were working down those frets anyhow?

Nice video!...I have the non trem tobacco burst model here somewhere . Its all original and stays in its case. I seem to remember that it also had a phase switch. The original owner had the bridge set up for slide playing so technically it has NO fret wear.
