- A look at the Hofner Ignition, the 6 string guitar version of the famous, 'Beatle Bass.'
Theme music 'Mustang,' from my album, 'Warbirds,' by Harpaxe. Available from Amazon & i-tunes. Видеоклипы
I previously had no idea that such a guitar existed. Thanks!
Wow, that intonation is just immaculate. Quite impressed.
You’re looking well John! Great video as always and thanks a million for sharing!
Love your reviews! Cheers 🇨🇦
This is another guitar I've been interested in for awhile. Been wanting a hollowbody, but also something unique, and this might be the ticket. Love your videos, man. Keep rocking!
Thanks Sam, much appreciated.
GLASGOW Through and through Fantastic review yet again Thank you.
This is the best & funny guitar review I have ever seen / listened to! [:-)] I have this same exact guitar......but I still have my pickguard (scratch plate) -- heh heh heh. I replaced my knobs though, with gold 'top hat' knobs.
Thanks Keith, God bless.
that is awesome , thank you for sharing.
Is that the sun coming in through the window? I thought you lived in Scotland.
Happy Advent Sunday.

in all fairness the wether, in scotland has been, on the whole; good to non existent for the last decade, though it can be very VERY cold in the dark winter months. Englands had it much worse in terms of wether than scotland. What with flash floods and haveing jimmy Saville as a national treasure for fck sake .... what the actual fck!! were they thinking with that one??
No doubt, the most revealing, most telling, most basic 'need to know' info, of any Hofner Ignition
demo I have ever viewed in my entire history of researching this particular guitar.
Yes, since about 1 hour ago.!
Was looking for a violin guitar, never even considered Hofner. Why. I figured the price would be
beyond my meager means.
Well, thanks to you, I will be ordering one this weekend.
Any other comments regarding the playability of the neck.?
Thanks RPM, but nothing to add about the neck.
Great review, John. Something sinister about folks our age cranking up the "fuzz", lol. I just bought my third one of these - the first one was black {actually trans-black} because sunburst was sold out. The second, a used sunburst, had a discolored fretboard that was no doubt sold as a second, but the photos didn't show it. Just found a brand new, perfect one, stamping on the back of the headstock, which I'll KEEP! Though they were made in Hofner's Chinese factory, as you said, the quality is stellar, a thing to behold. Hofner told me yesterday they're no longer in production {I believe 'twas about 2-3 years} and as such, will remain rare by normal standards. I guarantee they'll go up in value, especially when Macca moves on to the next dimension {not to be morbid, lol}. Two other things - the early ones had nothing written on the back of the headstock, something to check for if that matters. And lastly, while the pickguard certainly does the 'Beatle' thing visually, the guitar is 10x more beautiful w/out it - the flamed maple back and sunburst front are to die for. Best to you ....
A good read NC. Yours is the first case of Hofner addiction I have come across God bless.
@@JohnCouplandguitar Oh, you should see the Hofner Facebook groups, there are peeps there who fantasize about teacup knobs, lol. They're just so classical given the violin connection. Stay well, sir.
I love seeing this man, who looks like a granddad, playing with overdirve. It’s beautiful.
Actually I have 7 grand children. Great comment!
I just got one new today, and mostly because of your honest subjective/objective reviews (not trying to sell me something).
Interesting issue of the classic Höfner Violin -Bass- ! I liked the uniqueness!
Very nice, Mr. Coupland. I've been wanting a Hofner Club but would now consider this model. I think the company's mini-humbuckers are outstanding. Anyhow, thanks and greetings from Eastern Kentucky!
Good choice Paul.
Hello, Thank you for posting this video. From what I can gather, these particular guitars were sometimes referred to as proto-types, meaning they were a commercial try out. One blogger I read said, "If they were meant as regular guitars , they would have been issued a number like other Hofner Guitars:. He had a point. I don't think they are currently in production.
Great video!
Thanks John im looking to buy one today
Go for it!
Sounds great.
John has excellent communication skills.
I also have a Hofner Violin Guitar, only in cherry red. I replaced the 3 knobs with chrome ones, it looks more elegant now.
great review man very entertaining haha
Thanks Dylan, much appreciated.
Nice video
I bought one (black model) but had to send it back because of a bad fret job. But the guitar is exactly what I've been looking for otherwise -- a small, but hollowbody guitar. So my new one is on order. I wanted to go for the sunburst, but they sold out in the meantime! So I'll "settle" for a red one (Hofner's trans red guitars are beautiful). The only other complaint I had about the black model is that the color coat isn't transparent enough. They use flame maple on the back of the guitar, but with the black you can barely see it.
I dont know much about guitars but this sounds amazing
thanks for doing what you do buddy :)
My pleasure!
I've been eyeballing the Ignition bass for a few weeks now.
MicroGroover29 did you pull the trigger?
Hi john, old no not me like it , lol good man thanks for this .
been wanting a 6 string beatles guitar for yonks, gonna get one soon and play thrash metal on it lol
I would love to have a left handed guitar like this 👍
It'd be easy enough to do. Get someone to switch the bridge, nut and pickups out for Left handed and you'd be good to go. I'd say 2-300 quid and itd be a lefty
What is the last chord you play when you test the guitars?
Its a I, ii, iii, IV, V, ?, I, progression, with open high e,b, and low E strings right?
And i hear a note repeated in the second last chord and last chord that sounds really nice.
Can you share the notes/tab for that last chord? Love the vids!
Starting with a standard E = 221, 442, 664, 776, 998, 12 11 13 and finish with E 13 14 14. Strings 6, 2 & 1 remain open.
im wondering that strap is also hofner??? it seem suit with that guitar
Great review from somebody whose obviously been at the sharp end of public performance.
Indeed, from bar room brawls to leading worship on a Sunday morning. Life can take some very unexpected twists and turns.
I love your accent
I have one they are well worth it
This is what the Fender acoustasonics should have sounded like
where did you get the sunburst finish? i can only find the black one. fell in love with its neck sound
I got this from Thomann in Germany.
@@JohnCouplandguitar they must have been sold out:( hope I'll find it second hand
well, the lack of shielding around the switch etc, makes for a very loud audible feedback buzzing, another video shows what exactly is going on with these builds. I wish I had known this was really an issue, before I bought one.
Perfect for Beatles fans who can't play bass but can play guitar
Does yours hum very loudly when you turn both volumes down? Mine does that even on a clean amp and it drives me nuts!
No, it behaves itself perfectly but then I am only playing at house volume.
@@JohnCouplandguitar So am I, on a clean amp and at low volume... I've had two with the exact same issue.
Dear John...
Greetings from Los Angeles, California , USA - Planning to purchase the Hofner Beatles 6 string violin guitar model you reviewed - Question ? - Why did you remove the pickguard ? - Does it get in the way ? - Or did you just prefer the look of the guitar without the scratch cover?
Regards,
dm
p.s. any other comments about this guitar you could share - after having owned it for a year ?
Hi Daryl, it was just the look I did not fancy. I am not keen on bling.
Hi John ,
Thank you for your reply to my question regarding pickguard ...
After owning the Hofner 6 string for a year are there any other comments about the guitar that you could share ?
Are you still as pleased with the instrument as when you did your review video ?
(Note: I am purchasing this guitar primarily to play classic early Beatles ballads )
Happy New Year,
dm
@@darylmaynard8397 After a couple of months I was given two 335 style guitars in exchange for reviewing them on my channel. (The Quincy and the Hartwood.) My wife raised the eyebrow and something had to go so reluctantly I sold the Hofner. That said it showed no adverse signs and I was happy playing it. Regarding the 335's the Quincy was the better of the two and is now the one I play most often.
Dear Mr. Coupland ,
Thank you for your replies ...Understood ...My wife has imposed a two guitar limit on this household as well ...Wishing you and Mrs. Coupland "good luck & good fortune" in the Year of the Rat 2020
Best,
dm
When I check the edges of the neck, I call it "doing a sharp-edge-io"
Love it.
This is exactly what I need. Where can I get one from?
This came from Thomann in Germany. They seem to get a small batch in every so often.
Yes, I have just got one from them in the red finish. It looks premium.
I absolutely hated this video. It convinced me to get yet another guitar to sustain my GAS (guitar acquisition syndrome) disease. They are getting rare to find but I found one and bought it this morning. This will make my 13th guitar. Now I'll have a Hofner Ignition violin bass and guitar. The ignition bass I already have is excellent without a blemish and it sounds great. Thanks for your entertaining video.
I have the same ailment.
@@JohnCouplandguitar It appears to be terminal. It's worse for me because I also play bass, mandolin, keyboards, ukulele and banjo. Somehow I've only got one banjo - so far.
@@JohnCouplandguitar My Hofner 6 string ignition is supposed to come today. Did you find a case for yours? The violin bass case doesn't work from what I understand.
No. a bag will have to do.
I keep watching this video, i'm very desperate to purchase this guitar but just can't find one anywhere
It might be worthwhile asking Thomann if they plan to stock them again. If enough folks badger them it might just happen.
@@JohnCouplandguitar I finally found one for sale and because I'm so excited for it to arrive I once again keep watching this video in anticipation haha thanks again for the fun review
I'm gonna start telling people I'm only 5'9" because I play heavy guitars. I like that.
Way to go Josh!
Is this also hollow body?
Yes, it is completely hollow with no centre block.
I saw an original version of one of these in a charity shop in York in 1977. It was going for £52, and I didn't buy it. You can tell I have been regretting it ever since!!
It could be worse. I once met a man who had donated a Steinway piano to a bonfire. Years later he discovered that it was worth thousands.
@@JohnCouplandguitar Thanks John - that makes me feel much better!
Is it a floating bridge?
Yes it is.
@@JohnCouplandguitar
Thanks John
That makes it a pass for me but sure looks cool
is that a hollow body guitar with out any sound holes or is it a solid body guitar?
It is completely hollow, hence the light weight and it is slightly head heavy.
Any chance you want to sell this guitar?
Hi Flo, I no longer own this instrument. After being given two 335 style guitars by suppliers my wife, 'Suggested,' that i sell this one.
@@JohnCouplandguitar a true bummer, finding this guitar in this finish is impossible online.
@@frankyquiroz4371 . Thomman in Germany have them.
You're a wondeful man and I hope you know that
Blushing from head to toe.
Damn I thought that was a bass rip
An easy mistake to make. I do not know if this will help but the neck on this is a deep U profile.
I cant understand a word this man is saying .
Sadly not everyone can be born Scottish.
@George James Probably American!
Sassenach numpty
Get yersel to Glasgie and neck a pint or two of heavy. Soon ye'll ken it all.
