      Sounds better with LaBella " deep talking bass" strings, they are made for the hofner beatle bass. I bought my mine with round wounds and changed right away, .039 .056 .077 .096 is the gauge I used. Awesome sound!

I just looked on their web site and it now goes for 349.00, still an awesome bass with great sound. If you are considering this bass, it's worth the money. With the LaBella strings on it will sound like an upright bass. Hope this helped you!

    I got the Black version of that bass and changed the tuning knobs to Wilkinson Tuners replaced the tail piece with and original 500/1 trapeze tailpiece, installed "Tea Cup" knobs, replaced the bridge with an Ebony 500/1 bridge, changed the (4 screw) control panel with an original 500/1 Ebony (2 screw) control panel and put La Bella Flat wounds strings. The Bass sounds amazing no matter what I play on it. Running it thru a Fender Studio 40 Amplifier is a plus for changing the sound I need for any particular type of music. I did paint over the pick guard screws to a matching off white color and also the pickup holder frames screws to black. Looks and plays Great!!

    The vintage pickguards are held on by pins instead of a screw and the pin is hidden under it :)

    Dave how the pick guard was attached is a pin (short piece of wire) was used to hold it at the bridge (into a hole) and a hole on the side of the neck. For the bracket, they glued a strip of the pick guard material to the under side and the bracket was inserted into the slot between the two. The older basses also had the white/black/white nut which was made of binding strips. I have a 1964-1984 reissue with blade pickups not staple. It has the newer control plate, white nut, and flat wounds. Sounds great just like the records. I also have a new CT Club bass and changed to tea cup knobs and flats. Sounds great as well. The best thing is, IT'S A HOFNER.

    Hi KZHX, Orginal Pickups are available. You might be able to get them from Hofner direct but more like via ebay or the like. I have seen a pair of orginal Diamond series so they are around. The orignal early Hofner PU's have a different mounting which changed in the mid 60's to the more trad Gibson style so you will need to check. The later type should be a direct fit. The surrounds are norrower and changing these would mean drilling new mounting holes to fit. hope that helps - cheers Dave

    Hi, someone else asked this question ages ago, hopefully it doesnt vary from what I said then. Essentially the Icon was made in Indonesia by Hofner. This was discontinued and production was moved to China where it was produced as the Ignition about 24 months ago or more. Construction is exactly the same however the finish on the Icon is slightly different. Depending where you live some places may still sell the Icon however the Ignition now replaces that model. Hope that helps Cheers Dave

    Hi Pedro, If you look further down I acfually weighed this for someone else. According to my bathroom scales it weighs 1.6kgs. Hofner may have a more accurate description on their website. You may find that your instrument like the epiphone Viola and one or two hofner models has a centre core or sustain block. So it will be more weighty. While technically not a pure hollow body instrument the extra mass should provide more sustain and a more focused tone. What brand is yours? Cheers Dave

    Hi dave . I have a 1965 original and I find it to be a really fab bass and I have flatwounds on it and it gives a just amazing sound. In fact I have the strings that are made specifically for this bass that being the shorter scale flats. You get a really good beatle sound like you say. I have owned it since 1988 and would never part with it because to me it is a piece of history and its original although it is the post 64 version with the wider control panel which is a shame

  • @keegan46
    @keegan46  11 лет назад +1

    Hi Guitarhak, thanks for your remarks, my thoughts are these, yes it could suit an rock style. It certainly has great tone for it but from experience I suggest you would need the round wound strin with it to keep a bit of edge to it and sustain. Sustain would be your biggest issue I think. From experience using it in a three piece it works great for slightly more folky styles but when you need a bit more aggression I find it starts to be a bit plunky. This works for some things but not others

    Hi Dave, great review of the instrument. I'm interested in getting one as I'm a big beatles fan, and play in a band myself. Would this bass fit an indie rock style? I play in a three piece so the bass is quite a vital part of our sound. Thanks.

    Hi Dave, I've been researching the Hofner recently to replace my cheapo, schlocky sounding Squire Bass. I know someone asked this a while back, but I couldn't find your answer, so pardon any redundancy, but: Q: Were the Hofner's specifically meant to be played with a Pick? I read somewhere recently that the originals were geared to Guitarists who were looking to double on Bass, & therefore, the different scale length & closer-to-a-6-string dimensions. But I wanted to know if that bit of information is actually correct & if so, if it extends to Fingers-vs.-Pick? And while I'm sure everything usually comes down to personal preference, if there's any Advantage/Disadvantage to playing it with Pick - vs. - (Index & Middle) Fingers. Many Thanks! - - Jonathan, NY, U.S.

  • @DioStreams

    I can hear the difference when you use the solo and rhythm switch, when it’s solo, it gives both pickups a kind of sound boost mostly in the low end and mids from what I hear

  • @keegan46
    @keegan46  12 лет назад +1

    Hi Hofnerbass, as a beginner there is no diff between the Hofner and any other bass, that is turning and fret positions are exactly the same. Its short scale and really thin neck makes it easy to play and you wont have to stretch your fingers as far as you perhaps would with say a standard bass like a Precision or Jazz. Consider however what music you want to play as the Hof isnt particular good for slap or tapping and its quite plucky so it wont have the sustain of a solid body. Cheers Dave

    Hi Cocobro, I think you're a tad harsh. Sure McCartney played a short scale Hoff, but he also played a long scale Rickenbacker, P Bass and oh a 5 String Wal. Not to mention guitar, Piano and Drums. Listen to anything from Wings MkI and that's him playing a long scale bass. A lot of recordings mid Beatles from at least Rubber Soul onwards he was playing a long scale Ricky. What you classify as difficult is what makes him an iconic bass player. Cheers Dave

  • @keegan46
    @keegan46  11 лет назад +2

    Hi Jack, when you first pick up the bass the thing you will notice is that its quite evenly balanced. Because of the shape of the body you may notice it does have a bias towards the neck when sitting, You definitely don't notice this when standing or using a strap. Because it is so light even with this bias I have never noticed or found myself fighting with it even when seated. Its still very comfortable to play. Hope that helps. Cheers Dave

    I'm about to build a violin bass, and I'm thinking I'll make a control plate out of some nice wood and wire it up like a Tele with a 4-way switch. Seems like it will have much the same as the tone options here but I think it'd look different in a cool way. Maybe two nickel Tele knobs with the switch in the middle.

    Hi, I guess the simple answer is “a lot”. Essentially the Yamaha is a solid body active long scale bass and the Hofner is a hollow bodied passive short scale instrument. The RXB is an entry level version but looks to be quite a versitle intrument with the active circuitry. The Hofner is a lot smaller and lighter than the RXB and ulimately it will come down to what sounds, looks and works better for your style of music. Hope that helps. Tell me why the choice between Yamy and Hofner?

  • @b1j755

      I found on my Hofner Ign bass the buzzing you mention is caused by the tailpiece , the decorative wires on it vibrates where they fit into the back of the main block ,also on mine the wire that runs across the tailpiece has broken a weld on one side so I am replacing mine with a original German Hofner one , they are a lot beefier than the flimsy Chinese offering as you would expect.

    Come together and Hey Bulldog seem to be played with a Rickenbacker 4001 S, not great examples for "Hofner kind of sound". Not sure of Day Tripper, but I'll bet for the Rick too. What's your opinion of this bass in comparison with the Contemporary Series in terms of quality of materials, sound and hollowness of the body?

    • @davidflynn7113
      @davidflynn7113 9 лет назад

      Hi Christian, I have to admit I hadn't thought about this before however at the time when I made this demo I wasn't really thinking Hoff vs Ricky or like for like. So you maybe right. I think Paul started playing the Rick around rubber Soul which is around the same time as Day Tripper? I don't think Macca was playing his Rick exclusively after that and both the Hoff and the Ricky were being used on recordings. Its hard to know. In fact I don't think he knows. I recently saw an old clip from the Anthology where apparently Paul thinks and George claims he played bass on Helter Skelter. I think that's another youtube topic.
      I have been asked about the Contemporary before but I cant remember too much about it. Reading a brief review of it I don't really know that there is a lot of difference between it and the Ignition except that it maybe a bit more in keeping with the 60's Hofner. One of the versions does have a centre core similar to an Epiphone Viola which gives it more mass and perhaps more sustain (it did give it a different sound) but I'm not sure if this is the same one. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful :) Cheers Dave

    Hi, Yeah we already had this conversation further down. Your not alone in thinking this however as per the Hofner Website, the brochure that came with the bass and the invoice from the music store I bought it from it is an Ignition (based on the 70's Hofner). The consensus seems to be that the names Icon and Ignition are interchangeable with one orginallly produced in Indonesia and the other in China. Cheers Davd

    Hi Seamus. If I was asked to play this kind of music my natural leaning would be to use my P Bass or Status Graphite just because they are more versitile and you can play loud. The Hoff could work. It certainly would have have the the depth of bass but perhaps not the sustain and hence its a bit more "plucky" Its something you would need to experiment with. In a similar circumstance I personally found myself wishing I used something different for that reason. Cheers Dave

    Hi Mr Benny, Well not quite, same materials but built in different countries. The Icon was made in Indonesia (now discontinued) and the Ignition is made in China replacing what was the Icon. Hi. Both basses are made in China. What I understand is that the Contemporary is based upon the 60's hoff (more like Macca's) The Ignition is more based on the 70's. Materials are essentally the same but I have read that the pickups are different but looking at it I'm not sure of that. Build quality might be slightly better with the contempoary. The diff other than looks is that the contemporary has a center block to provide more sustain. This also makes it heavier. Hope that helps - Dave

    While I have never seen the Jackson up close the little bit I know about it would make me think that it would be a good bass for your style of music. Primarily because it is a solid body instrument with active circuitry. This would give you a lot more control over sound and tone than the Hofner. However they are 2 totally different instruments . What is it about each that you like? If you decide on the Jackson think about the JS3 4 string version as an alternate option to the 5. Dave

    Hi Dave - Thanks for the informative video on the Hofner Ignition Violin Bass. I'm considering buying one as an addition to my 52 P Bass. I played a 64 Hofner on a session with Brian Cadd up in Byron Bay last year. I was hooked. Is the Ignition series top quality? I know you said it was built in China. I loved playing the vintage one...Thanks for the info, mate. John Beland - Flying Burrito Brothers

    • @keegan46
      @keegan46  10 лет назад

      Hi John, if you were to compare the German 64 Hofner with Ignition then I would say the 64 for quality would win out every time. Having said that Its not about the quality of sound because the Ignition just sounds awesome. Its more the little things Which are relatively easy to fix that kind of let it down a little. The volume knobs for instance are just not right, I changed them for the original Hofner teacups and it just looks spot on. The tuners are a bit plastic but they seem to hold their tune ok for the moment (no slippage). The finish on mine is great however compared to say the German model mine has a more orangey tinge to it. I've actually particularly noticed that on stage under lights more. I like it but again it probably says something about the quality.
      after a couple of years now of playing this hoff quite regularly there is very little I can really find to complain about. Its pretty much the same as you see it in the video. I also have a 57 P re-issue. A sound guy who has heard me play both actually commented and said "I like the sound of your P bass, there's nothing wrong with it but that other bass just has such an interesting tone to it there's just something about it." .And its funny out of all the basses I have for such a relatively cheap instrument its the one I'm most drawn to. Flatwound strings also make a big difference it just seems to bring out the warmth and tone of the bass.
      The only other thing I would say is I am only just now considering having the bass professionally re setup. For no other reason that I think the action is probably a bit high compared to say some of my other basses. I haven t changed it since I bought it but just looking a the string height now beyond the 10th or 12 fret I'm sure it could come down a fair bit.
      If I haven't sold you on it, I saw an interview with Paul McCartney's guitar tech recently and they asked why you never see him play his Rickenbacker Bass anymore. The simple answer is that the Hofner just sounds so much better live and recorded that he decided to just stick with the Hoff. If the Ignition can live up to half that reputation then its truly a bargain.
      Cheers Dave. PS I truly love your work, Hope to see you playing live soon.

      youandwhosearmy?
      Hi youandwhosearmy, I'm not sure who's army but hi to them as well :) Good spotting, I hadn't really thought about it until now. Doing a bit of research it would appear that all the German made Hofners including the club bass have a zero fret. I haven't checked but I suspect the Verythin also has the zero fret too. From around the late 90's onwards you do start to see some with and some without and as you suspect the ones without are probably the cheaper models manufactured outside of Germany. Its actually a good tell to spot the difference between the models. Cheers Dave

      cheers, and thanks for your reply. yeah there is something about the zero fret that is appealing to me. the reason being i don't think i have ever bought a guitar that has a nut cut as low as it could be cut (therefore not allowing for the best possible action) and that includes top quality instruments such as les pauls and strats. i'm thinking that a zero fret would at least mean a low string height at the head end of the instrument. i only own a cheap tanglewood bass for the time being, but i am seriously thinking of getting a smart new bass and playing more and more bass. really enjoyed your video btw. take care

      Dave Flynn Hi. Excellent video but I have another question for you that I forgot to ask last time. According to the Hofner website it says that the action set up is 3mm for E string going to 2mm for the G. Having a look at your instrument, would you say the action could come down without fuss to around 2mm or lower for all the strings. It is something that is making me stall ever so slighly over buying one of these lovely looking guitars.

      Hi Theresa, Actually the only mod I have made to the Hofner since my review is changing the black volume knobs to the more traditional Teacups. I also replace the roundwound strings with D’Adario Chromes 45 - 105’s, a little heavier than the rounds but still sounds great and it’s held up really well no neck issues. I also removed the Hi B Bass writing from the truss rod cover and I did take off the scratch plate more recently which I Like but I might put it back on eventually again 😊 mostly superficial things but all the electronics are still the same. In fact the only thing that has failed really is the input jack. I still love it and it has a great sound and it still gets played quite often. It has a great mojo about it that just makes me smile each time I play it😀

    Hi Stu, your right that through computer speakers the difference between the rhythm and solo positions are probably subtle. I cant here really the difference through my laptop or phone speakers by themselves. If you havent already, try playing the clip through something with some decent bass, Hopefully it will give you a better sense of the 2 positions. Having said that, if you get to try one out you will definately hear that boost in volume which provides another tonal variation. Dave

    P.S, I was just curious. Why do they call this version the "Ignition" model? Is it a play on words as in ignition for starting a car therefore they used the name to imply it is for "starters/beginners"?

      @frankjuster8726 5 лет назад

      @xcorgi it's original name was the "icon" because it is an iconic model thanks to the beatles...later changed to the "ignition" because it's the "one that started it all"lol.

  • @keegan46

    As a three piece depending what you do I think you would probably be using some effects. You would need to experiment with this. In my setup I find the Hoff just doesn't work that well with effects. Particularly with ones I probably associate with playing in a 3 piece like distortion, octave, chorus, auto filters etc. I think its just the hollow body nature of the instrument. This is where you would need to check it out for yourself to see it will work for you. Hope that helps. Dave

    Which brand of strings do you use? I just bought one of these, and the guy who sold it to me said that I could buy just any brand and any type of strings, Can you recommend some brands and specifications please????????

    • @davidflynn7113
      @davidflynn7113 9 лет назад

      cesar d leon Hi Cesar. No you cant put any strings on this bass. Firstly, make sure that you buy Short Scale strings. You may have to search around or purchase these online as some music stores dont regularly stock them. I have heard of people cutting down normal long scale strings to fit however if you do this you are in danger of either damaging the turning keys or worse, effecting the tension on the neck.
      You can use either short scale roundwound or flat wounds. Personally I use Di Adario Chromes which are polished flatwounds. Very nice sound. I hope that helps. Cheers Dave

    I bought one after seeing your review. I saw there were other kinds of Violin bass that preceded the Hofner. For the price I think its great. I did buy a old style pickguard at the same time. It actually has pins you nail into the neck and bridge. I managed to get some old control knobs(eggcup style they call them). I was going to change the control plate but thought I was getting a bit ridiculous. Thanks loads for the review. It actually did make me get one and I LOVE it, Cheers

    Hi, I just received an Aceto violin bass for Xmas and for the life of me I can't find any information on it or any reviews, all I could basically find is that Aceto is known for violins and some solid body bass guitars, I'm not sure if it's a knockoff or not, any information would be appreciated, thanks

    • @davidflynn7113
      @davidflynn7113 8 лет назад

      Hi Keith, from what I can tell you maybe correct. Without seeing a picture, what you might have is an Eric Aceto designed instrument. If its the same person then yes he is more known for violins, mandolins and guitars. I am not aware that he makes many basses which makes me think it could be a custom designed model. I'm not sure that helps very much but it would be great to see a pic. The name is a bit too uncommon to be a knockoff but anything is possible. The main thing is how it sounds. its a great story anyway. Cheers Dave

I can send you a couple of pics but to give you a description, it looks like the Hofner but mine is a dark purple in color, the control box doesn't have switches, it has two volume controls and one tone control, it has the same floating bridge, but within the string tree there's this funky little design that leads down to the tail , I just subscribed to your channel and thanks again!

    That's what I thought, too. I have just ordered an "Icon" through a US Internet supplier. I spoke with the US Hofner distributor (the only one) and he told me the product names are interchangeable in 2012 (this may not last as I think Hofner wants to move to Ignition for brand identity -- my guess). He told me that the current units are definitely made in Indonesia today.
    Maybe they use China for some markets (Australia) and Indonesia for others (US)?

    • @keegan46
      @keegan46  7 лет назад

      Hi Babade, Think anything Paul McCartney or Beatlish (Pop, Country, Rock, Jazz, Blues, folk) and you can play it on the Hofner. Personally I tend to play it in a band where I want something warm that fits with say guitar, piano,, acoustic guitar drums. But you can just about play any style you want. However it isn't a slap bass, You will never get Marcus Miller, victor Wooten, Mark King kinda tones out of the Hoff even with round wound strings. I think it was never really designed for this purpose, the hollow body, warm pickups and just the layout doesn't really work. Hope that helps. Cheers Dave

    Hi Seamus again. Thats a really loaded question and any thing I say here will just be another bass players opinion. Since you mentioned G&N, Duff McKagan tended to use Fender P basses and I think Yamaha. Take a look at my JV series P bass and HM series squire episodes and it will give you an idea. A Fender P or J bass are always a good starting point. Seriously there are so many options that it will always come down to what you can afford and personal preference. Cheers Dave

    I always thought that all German made violin basses were hollow.The Ignition/Icon basses are also hollow which makes them closer in terms of construction to the originals than the Contemporary Series which as you say,have a centre block.
    Don't know about quality of the respective hardware though.
