Nice job. I use nylon mauls in my leather works shop. I started with a 12 oz maul and settled in with 32 oz working maul which seems to be just right for what I need. It reminds me of the children’s story of the three bears. You keep trying different weighted mails until you settle on just the right weight.
Great job on this build. I enjoy using mauls for carving and joinery work. Using those pins to line everything up is really cool and makes it repeatable. Great video.
Very beautiful tool, and informative vid. I do leather work, and want to add metal to my work...Stamp and carving (leather and metal ) also. You have given me many ideas. Thanks and have a blessed new year.
Cool build man. I enjoyed it. I actually need one of these. I just made a leather sheath. I punch stich holes with stitching chisels and did a basket weave stamp. I had a little wooden mallet that i thought would work well, but it did not lol. I ended up swapping to a 3 lb hammer which probably good for my tools long term
Great build that looks amazing. The fact that you are able to repurpose old items that have personnel history for you is kewl :) Practicing the locator pins / take down build technique is a great idea, good practice and a stronger more versatile tool. Happy New Year to all as well, from South Aus :)
I have a question. I have looked for many videos about bandsaws used for cutting metal, and I haven’t found any good information on what can be used, unless you buy a Milwaukee one for $400. I noticed in one of your other videos that you have/had a Wen band saw. Is that what you used to cut the large pieces of steel in this video? When I tried it on my Wen, the blade got dull about 2 inches into cutting a 1/4 inch piece of steel. Any advice would be appreciated.
Hey Jacob, I've never tried the WEN. I have a BAUER and it's been going strong for about 2 years now. Check out the description of this video for a link to the bandsaw and stand. (Way cheaper than $400...) - Cheers man.
@@RedBeardOps Thanks a ton. I went back and found that it was a WEN drill press you have. Thanks for replying so soon. Have a great new year! (Fellow Texan from Pasadena)
Hey. I am trying to find the video on your respirator. I too wear a beard and its the only one that looks like it really works. Looking through the vids I don't see it. Help me please!
Your little explainer about this not being a tutorial reminded me of a guy who commented on an AVmake video. The guy was making a knife with basic tools and someone commented that he broke his own rule because "a forge isn't a basic tool"
This was an awesome build, I really did enjoy it, but why not do something a little special for the pommel too, I get function over form, but you invested so much time in the aesthetics of the rest of just to finish with a lock nut. Either way, really glad that I found your channel!!! Well done. P.S. I have a red beard also, though now it seems more gray than it used to. LMAO
Lol, I'm sure it's still glorious! I did think about fabricating a nut, but the lock nuts do such a good job at keeping everything held together that I decent to take the easy way out. Cheers sir!
Why not just put the spacers in the lathe to make sure they’re concentric to the hole and to also get a good finish? You probably could have made the cap and top spacer out of one part in the lathe too.
Happy New Year! I hope yall's 2021 builds are epic! 🙌

Hell, I just had one delivered! Great timing, James 🇬🇧🙏🏻🇺🇸
That came out great! Nothing like making a tool if you need one!

Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed the build!
Beautiful work... lots of care and thought put into what amounts to a 'soft' hammer. Great job and something to be proud of!
Thank you very much! Have a great weekend!
Very cool build! I did a video making one a while back and I used UHMW. I might have to get some nylon and give each one a test. 👍🏼
Thanks man!

Really nice work James! I love to repurpose things. My wife calls my resource pile a "junk pile". Can you believe that?
Wow! I can't believe she would say such a thing! 😉 |||| Thank you sir!
Nice work! It looks like that lathe is becoming a very handy tool in the shop.
Happy New Year!
Cheers from Canada
Thanks, you too! Yep, I'm trying to get my moneys worth out of the restoration for sure! Pretty handy to have around for sure.
I think I need one of these! 😁

Nicely done. It will last you a lifetime.
I hope so! Cheers Ian!
That's a sweet job. If you need a stitching pony, look at the one on Tony Needs Hobbies.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Great job dude! Loved the fact that you used locator pins to make a perfect take down maul! :)
Glad you liked it! Cheers man

likely!
Why are nylon head used for these?
I went with Nylon since it was cheap. Many plastics would do the job. (protects the punches)
@@RedBeardOps looks nice to.
Aww it puts a smile on your face. I’m so moved🤮
Glad you liked it Bob! 😆
I made my maul with 6" hex cap bolt with two washers between 3"dia nylon rod and fitted it in teak wood handle.... Urs is much more complicated 🙄🤔.
For sure! lol
I was kinda right. It's a hat, but for a maul. 🤣
LOL, you were close!
