Wow. Ben, I have sought out every review and reaction I can find for this film. I have to say, I think yours is hands-down my favorite. You are articulate, thoughtful, sensitive and intuitive, and that in itself is SO refreshing. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Call me subscriber #53! I cannot wait to hear more from you.

Can I second that? This IS refreshing. I have decided that I am going to write a screenplay for Timothée, even if it never gets made.

I'm italian and I live in Crema. This film is so beautiful, my city, my places, my life, my experiences, my dialect, the riflessi's lake, the Serio's waterfalls, the fontanili, Bergamo, the Garda's lake, Sirmione... it's my life, it's me!

I'm So jealous. On my list of places to travel, Italy is number one right now. The country is absolutly beatuiful and I love the language.

This movie haunts me. It broke my heart but in the most beautiful way. It has made such a big impact on me. I have ever seen anything as raw and real as this film and I have never been able to relate to a film so much on an emotional level. Is so much more than just young love, it’s about when your love with someone is so great, that you are no longer just yourself, but you are also them as well. And together you are just one being. I just think that’s beautiful.
    Amazing review.

I watched this movie with my girlfriend yesterday. Honestly, I didn't want to see a movie about gay romance, but my girlfriend is a big fan of Timothee Chalamet since Lady Bird and his oscar nomination. So we went together and I can say, it's a great movie with great actors, beautiful cinematography. We both really enjoyed this movie.

Hey Ben, it's always great to listen to someone talk about how CMBYN moved them. This film just opens people up in a magical way: it manages to surprise even those who were already dying to see it by going deeper than anyone reasonably suspects it can. Anyway, one thing you didn't get quite right: even though it flows together like it was all purposefully written for the film, Sufjan Stevens' contribution to the soundtrack is only three songs -- Futile Devices (which was a remix of one he recorded a few years ago), and Mystery Of Love and Visions Of Gideon which were written for the film.
The rest can be divided into two groups: the pop tunes that were playing on Italian radio and in the clubs back in '83, and classical and modern classic pieces. It's that last group that I think you may be thinking were also Sufjan, as it's been so perfectly chosen. The first half of the trailer (and what plays when they're doing a lot of the cycling) uses Ravel's Une barque sur l'océan to create the mood. It, and some of the pieces that Elio plays on the piano by Bach and Satie, are on the soundtrack album. It's totally worth getting, BTW. The piece that Elio plays three different ways for Oliver, isn't on the soundtrack album however. Neither is the Poulenc piece he plays when "Sonny and Cher" show up. (Too bad!) Anyway, I'm glad this film meant so much to you; I just wanted to plug the soundtrack because I think it adds even more to it. Cheers!

Thanks for the beautiful review, Ben. Besides the priceless performances of Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer and Luca Guadagnino's deft direction, let's applaud Sayombhu Mukdeeprom's cinematography. As you know, he used a 35mm lens for the entire film, but what you might not know is, Mukdeeprom created the impression of a sun-bathed Italy, even though it rained 28 out of the 30 days they shot there. I also enjoyed seeing your own ''Id or Ego'' short. Best wishes on your filmmaking career!

Timothée was not acting -- he was BEING the part. The joy exuded from Timothée in the movie and even afterwards is palpable. I can taste it. Don't want to sound corny, but Timothée is deeply in touch with his inner self. Timothée IS love. He not only feels love -- he *IS* love and he shares his love with everyone he meets. Not a fake bone in his body. He is joy incarnate. You have some of his qualities as well. I hope you are an actor too.

Ben, I forgot to mention... If you're into it, you should listen to the audio book. It's narrated by Armie, which I think gives an intensity that no one else could possibly bring to the table. I've been re-listening to it all day, and thought you would truly enjoy it. It's about seven and a half hours. And if you do, please do another review! I know it will be good! Have a great day.

Wonderful review. This was the best movie of the year I have no idea why it did not win more awards including the Oscar. Timothee Chalamet was a revelation. You seem to be very bright and knowledgeable. Can't wait to see more reviews from you. The two films I am very much looking forward to this year are Beautiful Boy Starring Steve Carrell and Timothee Chalamet. . Timothee plays Nic a struggling meth addict and Steve his father. The book is incredible. The other is Boy Erased starting Lucas Hedges and Nicole Kidman. It is about gay conversion therapy and what Lucas's character goes through. The book is also amazing. Both movies are getting major Oscar buzz.

I LOVED this movie- and I generally don’t care for slow paced films. It’s the best since Brokeback Mountain.
I’ve never really wanted a sequel to an independent dramatic film before; but I am hoping for this movie’s sequel. Apparently the novel continues with the two characters 15-20 years later.

Hey Ben! What a great review.. I share your love for this.... for me its more than a great film, its a true work of art. I have just returned from Italy where I visited some of the locations from the film, including the villa... which was extremely lucky as its not open to the public. The place is just incredible! I've just done a little cover of Mystery of Love on my channel and in the video you can see the villa and some of the locations. Thought you might like to see! And it was such a joy to hear your passion for this film. All the best, Alex
