Why are straight men in other countries so much more secure in themselves and mature about gay topics and scenarios than they are in the United States? To be honest, I don’t think that they’re any different here but they just don’t want to show it. I’ve talked to a lot of guys that when they are being open and honest or drinking a lot more sensitivity comes out. It’s just that they don’t need that in other countries. It’s one of the reasons other countries see many Americans as so immature.

The reason why Americans have such a major issue when it comes to anything to do with sex gay or straight is because this country was founded upon retarded, repressive Puritanical ideals that have been ingratiated into our culture.

(NOT) FUN FACT: this movie was shot in MY town, here in north Italy. In trailers I could literally see squares and places I cross everyday since I was a child.... aaaand we're going to have it in our theaters on February. FEBRUARY, goddammit!

2 weeks since I have seen the movie and I still find myself tearing up on the train, waiting for the bus, while taking a shower.. it's one of those films that will change you forever especially on how you look at love, life, and the fickleness of time. I still think of the two characters and hope that they end up together fully knowing that this is a fictional story, set in 1983...that's how effective this film and their actors are

TJ Tan Same here. It’s been now over a year that I saw the movie and still have such anxiety and strong feelings from it. Never had A MOVIE do me this way, especially for such a long period of time. This movie is at the TOP of my list and should have won many, many more academy awards! Timothée, best performance, Armie, best supporting, music score, etc. I purchased the book and read it twice, after seeing the film. Once on my own and once with audible, Reading along with Armie Hammer. I have the dvd of the movie, but have been a bit apprehensive about watching it yet, because of the effect it had on me the first time!. If you haven’t listened to the book, it is awesome! His voice and the way he reads it, is just so incredibly sensual! I just received my copy of “Find Me”. Have read about a third of it. A bit taken back by the first part, not being about Elio and Oliver. I think Acimen drug out the first part a bit to long, but it is good writing, just anxious to get to the boys! You just have to hang in a bit and I think it will all come together. Certainly hoping for Luca and Jame Ivory, to make a sequel film of Find Me!!🤞🏻🤗

How refreshing to see straight men embracing this film. It not only shows maturity, confidence and security with your own sexuality (unlike many homophobic “straight” men), but it also shows that when love seems organic and natural it just seems like love, not gay love or straight love - just love.
How unrefreshing to keep bringing up sexual orientation in a film that has nothing to do with sexual identity. Had this been about a man and a women, you wouldn't have written this. Stop bringing up labels where they don't belong

I was floored by this film. Its final shot was stunning. If Visions of Gideon or Mystery of Love doesn't win the Oscar for Best Song i'll be shocked.

the final shot over the credits was simply impossible. to just look into a camera and let emotions flow across your face for what seems like forever is unheard of.
The father's monologue can bring a straight guy to tears. So basically we all cried. LOL Such a stunning film, it left me speechless.

The final scene of Elio crying was absolutely gut-wrenching! Excellent display of getting one's heart broken for the first time! Just ahhhhhhh
I'm glad I had already seen the movie when I read this comment. This is why I avoid the internet like the plague when there's a movie I'm really looking forward to seeing but haven't been able to yet.
The cinema switched the lights on and people started leaving during the final scene. It made me pretty angry, as it was so beautifully acted and directed. It reflects the true feeling of first loves and disappointment. So beautiful. So sad.
I know right! People left right as the credits started rolling over the final scene, and I was mildly pissed.
I read somewhere about how Luca Guadagnino try to frame each scene as real as possible just like seeing it with human eyes, they shoot the entire movie in just one lens, in 35mm. He wanted to capture the acting without any technological interference so all the emotions and interactions are captured raw, just like you see another human interaction right before your eyes. I think that's really interesting and incredible. Makes you feel so close to all the characters and makes this movie very immersive.

Heytheregoodie So true. That's the genius of Lucas, right? He figured it out. Too much technology manipulation will impede the connection between the audience and the characters. This should be a lesson learned for all film makers. Keep it as organic as you can, particularly with a romance.

satuesday It opened in my city this past weekend (15 Dec) and I went to see it. Since then, I’ve watched hours and hours of interviews, clips, reviews, fan-edited trailers...just hearing the first few bars of “Visions of Gideon” makes me well up (heck, writing that last clause made me well up)....
I’m going again this weekend-exquisite torture.
I saw this on a whim at NZIFF expecting a good movie and it absolutely floored me. It's been almost 3 months and I can't stop thinking about it. Timmy put in the most incredibly raw performance of the year, and I'm really hoping the Academy can get over their age bias and let him steal that Oscar from Gary Oldman.
No words can describe how I felt watching this movie. It's by far my favourite movie this year and maybe all time. Everything about it was perfect. I can't believe that this movie even exist. I am in utter shock. 10/10
@bigray1999 Yes I have and no joke I also rated it 10/10 on IMDB. Both offers something so different from any other film that makes them stand out so well. I love that LGBT films are getting better with representation and storytelling that captivates us in so many different emotions. The future seems bright for LGBT films 😊
Thank you!! I just got my Blu-ray, so I don't have to keep going back to the theater (6 times). I love your emotional reactions and especially your thoughtful (first-viewing) reflections. I have gained immeasurably by multiple viewings and the luxury of paying closer attention to some of the most ambiguous moments and rich supporting performances. The whole movie seems more a fluid succession of moments than constructed scenes-sort of like life? I'm a filmmaker, and I have been studying and watching movies my whole life. I have never experienced such power in screen intimacy before. Such power exists, of course, in Renoir, in Bergman, in scores of other great directors' work, but here is a generosity I can't remember ever having experienced before, a loving warmth in the best that life and love have to offer. It points to a safe the way through the deepest sorrow by embracing equally, "the joy," as Professor Perlman says. Everybody working on this film is at the top of their game. But I have to say, Tim Chalamet is amazing, very nearly magical. This is a big talent.

Uh yeah. I’m already crying watching this review and imagining how beautiful this film will be when I watch it. I feel like it’s one of those films that stay with you long after you watch it and that’s honestly the thing I look forward to the most in cinema. 100% sure I’ll be floored. Great review, guys!

This is the best review of this stunning love story. You guys brought up all the wonderful elements that combine to express completely the evolution of a meeting, a friendship, and ultimately a relationship. Good job guys. I've watched it countless times, watched every You Tube interview about it, and it's just the most compelling story and film I've ever seen.

I have to say that it’s so wonderful watching you two guys as giddy and gushing about this film as I was and people I encounter at parties and in restaurants and all over. It’s such a joyous and bittersweet work of beauty . As a gay man I’ve been disappointed in some gay curmudgeons that seem to feel the need to be contrary . Arguments about whether the two central characters are bi or gay or just having a atypical experience, are besides the point. This is not about sexual identity. It transcends that . The fact that two straight guys are as giddy about this as I am shows that the choice to structure things in this way was a correct one. ( forgive me if that sounds like I’m saying that two straight guys couldn’t appreciate the beauty of an experience not their own, I don’t mean to say that, believe me ) This film speaks to everyone ! This is about one of the most central experiences of what it means to be human in its best of ways ! Of course you’re tearing up ! Thank you again guys !

In the USA it will come out staggered. It started in November 27th throughout major USA cities; then on December 22nd a grand number of cities will be premiering it, as well as, January 2018. Keep your eyes wide opened and check your movie theatres close to you every Friday and see which one will have it.
"Teary mess"...that was me. I saw it yesterday and it is in my bones. I left the movie in a trance. It is so hard to describe to anyone unless you have seen it and have the kind of heart that understands the connections in the movie. You mentioned a song, not sure which you meant but the killer for me was Ravel. That piece happens to be one of my favorites and when it was played during the ending monologue, there weren't enough tissues in my pocket. The people on both sides of me may have thought I was crazy (although one guy was sobbing pretty hard himself). I want to see it again and again. I don't remember any movie having this kind of impact on me. Ever. I want to see it again and again. Your review is so perfect. Thank you.

Finally got around to seeing this stunning film and I can’t stop thinking about it for days after. A film hasn’t had this kind of hypnotic affect on me leaving me in a dreamy haunted haze for days since I saw Tom Tykwer’s 2002 “Heaven” starring Cate Blanchett, which was also set in Italy. Really enjoyed your review and I’m a huge fan of your channel, keep up the good work.
I love your passion for this film, and I am glad you 'got it'. Too many "empty" movies are being made today. This little low budget, indie movie is a work of art, shot on film, not digital, and using only one lens. I have a feeling it will be used in film making classes for years to come.

Hey guys, I’m a film student from Denmark and was really lucky to watch this amazing movie in October at the LGBT film festival Copenhagen MIX! Here the original premier is 3 January.
The movie was amazing, I have rarely experienced a theatre so quiet when the subtitles goes on, many where crying others just absolutely heartbroken.
I’ve spent many many summers in Italy, this just took me back, I could almost smell Italian summer in the theatre.
I believe Oliver is 24 ??? I may be wrong?! But it’s dose not matter there live is beautiful, it may become a problem in the states, but in Europe nobody will complain, we have a different perspective of people and life.

Man, I love when my perception of people is being positively altered. You guys totally schooled me today. I got a super important lesson in not judging a book by its cover.... From two very attractive young guys like yourselves I totally expected a bunch of gay jokes and unintelligent, negative remarks all around. I was sure I knew your type exactly, but watching this I got the exact opposite: a thoughtful, intelligent, open-minded review of the best kind.
Ultimately this only reveals how my perception of certain people is warped by bad experiences and the media in general. So, thanks for opening my eyes and heart a little more and much continued success.
Excellent review of an excellent movie. This Kiwi guy has become obsessed with CMBYN - along with many people around the world. People say "Oh, an OSCAR doesn't necessarily reflect the quality of the movie", but what it would do is encourage more people to go and see it, and that would be a good thing. This review stirred up emotions within me again when Jay started tearing up about Michael Stuhlbarg. That monologue broke me down. I could not stop crying. I think most of have been there where Elio was. Great review I will send this to anyone on the fence about the movie.

It was in my city two days ago. Timothee himself was here at the theater in Hollywood and I couldn't get tickets, I checked every day. The day after I was able to go see another movie, and I passed the red carpet where he was. I am so frustrated. Then In America it's only gonna be in New York and LA, I live in LA. It comes out on the 24th in only two theaters, and I can't see it, because I have to go home for thanksgiving. I actually cried. It'll be out of theaters by the time I get back. I might have to wait for a while.

You two did a great job. I watched the movie, read the book, read the script, and watched it again. I think the power of this movie is that straight or gay it is moving people to see it and consider that love has no bounds and can not be restricted or type cast. I felt the acting was excellent. They made me believe this was all real. This brought back a lot of emotional memories for me. Every father should watch the speech given my Michael Stuhlbarg. We put so much pressure on young people to live a certain way and in so doing build guilt in them for years to come. I can't wait to see Timmy Chalamet in his upcoming movie "Beautiful Boy". From a first time love to a drug addict. What a a range of acting. I haven't seen it but rumors are already circulating for another Oscar Nomination.
This review was almost as good as the movie!! Rather than spend countless words trying to capture my thoughts on the movie, I'll quote a few words from the Irish Times that I feel sums it up perfectly: 'deliciously sad'.
It’s really hard for a book to get my attention, but after watching the trailer I HAD to read the story. There was no way I was waiting for the US release date. This book captivated me in a way that nothing (movie, show, or story) ever has. The book was such a wave of emotions that perfectly described human relationships (not just same sex relationships). It was like I was reading my own feelings. Which is so extraordinary because I was never able to put my own feelings into words. I’m sure Luca Guadagnin will have his own masterful way of making me an emotional mess, and I’m SUPER excited to watch this movie, but can we give some credit to André Aciman for writing this story? This man is a literary genius, and it really made me wonder what he’s gone through to have such insight on human emotion. From the movie clips that I’ve seen, the actors have been nailing the detailed descriptions in the book through their facial expressions and body language alone. I’m really happy. But the book gives you so much insight on what’s happening inside Elio’s head, and a lot of Elio’s inner monologue is what made this story so great. I highly recommend reading the book if you ever get the chance.

I agree. The book and movie is supplementary of each other. The movie brings the characters to life and the book gives you insights into their inner thoughts and why they talk or move the way they do in the movie. Little changes here and there but nothing is ultimately lost or sacrificed

Omg, you just made me more excited for this film! Hopefully it gets some awards, and you should definitely check out Sufjan Steven's music, especially "Carrie & Lowell". The guy is super talented.
It's so exciting every time I see that more and more people feel the exact same way I do about this movie. All of the things you guys mentioned about it, about what makes it so amazing and special and important, are all the same feelings and thoughts I had about it. Any time I've seen a review for it that's anything less than thrilled, I feel like they missed so much of what this movie accomplished. There's no way to accurately describe how much it moved and affected me. It's the first movie in I can't even remember how long where I immediately went back to see it a second time in the theaters. And I plan on seeing it at least once more while it's still there.I have to give a shoutout to all the actors, but Timothée in particular. Absolutely one of the best acting jobs I've ever seen.I agree that it's not absolutely *flawless* but I feel like any of the flaws that it has are not truly flaws in the first place, merely lovely little imperfections. This movie is about as close to "perfect" as I could imagine any movie ever being, so I give it a 10/10.

This movie cannot get enough praise. This is truly a landmark. Already saw it twice in theaters, dying to see it a third and even more dying for it to be released for home viewing so I can buy the Blu-Ray and watch it a 100 times more. Academy Awards, just give it Best Picture of the Year already.

I finally saw "Call Me By Your Name" this weekend and I am still recovering from it! It is such a brilliant piece of art that really gets to the core of the beauty and complexity of first love. I am currently typing with tears in my eyes. It has been a while since a movie affected me so much. This is a great review and it's so refreshing to see two guys who have such love and respect for all types of movies. Art is so important in life and it's great to see other people moved so much by it!

Shooting away from USA, being in Italy, yes a very romantic setting for sure. Oliver is 24 per the audiobook. Your take on Elio is spot on. Love is love is heaven. Elio had fantastic parent's.

Soul Munk the thing that bugs me is that in the best actress they tend to almost always reward the young newcomer while actor is the opposite, he is better than oldman, while oldman was spectacular Chalamet was out of this world but he wont win cause he is young

This is, for me, the best movie EVER. I've cried, got butterflies, got angry, smiled, laughed, got in awe, and cried again. EVERYTHING about this movie is art. Love is Love, just as you said and i'm so proud that an italian director made an approach towards LGBTQ+ ; and what a movie he made !! ❤️
There have been talks of a Sequel but if they make a scene about Oliver’s postcard on his office wall with something written at the back, I swear I will fucking cry in the cinema and all the way home until the following day.

I think the fact that they shot the film in chronological order helped the actors to create a truly natural feeling bond on screen.

And I agree that Stuhlbarg’s monologue is one of the most heart wrenching, honest pieces of acting ever. But the final scene... I just can’t even.

I'm pretty sure Oliver was supposed to be 24, not 25. But anyway... that was a beautiful review. I haven't seen the movie yet but I read the book (the last few pages had me crying my eyes out on a bus) and I feel like you guys captured the same ideas watching the movie as I did while reading the book.It's such a lovely story; so human and genuine, and pure and profoundly tender. Which is not something you usually see with stories about men. This one is so tender and soft! Gorgeous. And the music! I sincerely hope Sufjan Stevens gets that oscar.
Great comment. The last section of the book had me a wicked mess. The meetings in New England and back at the villa both were overwhelming for me. But, Luca is on record as saying he wants a sequel, and Armie has already agreed, too. If that happens, it could be more powerful than I think even this movie will be.

Can't get enough of CMBYN. Been a month since I saw the film and read the book but still obsessing about it. I closed my eyes listening to Prof. Perlman when he was talking to Elio. That was really moving. I also had a hard time finishing the book without putting it down because of tears streaming down my face. There was never a film that affected me this much.

I love what you said about the music, it was just elemental.
The voice of that summer for Elio for sure! Sufjan's songs especially "Mystery of Love" (wow!) and then "Visions of Gideon" in that long lasting last scene with Elio, it broke our hearts and still said "Yes" moments in our life are everything, every emotion, every flavor, every colour, sad, blissful ... everything!
Luca Guadagnino created something so darn visceral and sensuous and tender, it decimates you and dares you to resist feeling and thinking and being compassionate.
The novel is a work of literary awesomeness and there's a lot that in the film is verbatim, right off the page, word-for-freaking-word ... Prof's/ Stahlbarg's talk with Elio is right out of the novel but given complete and utter life.
Armie Hammer was, he was Oliver. Just so true! And Timothee Chalamet gave us the most raw and real glimpse into a young human being that can be imagined. That was not just a performance, it was something transcendent, (or to use Jane Austen's word) it was "incandescent".

I just got the opportunity to catch this right before it left theaters and I cried 1,000 million tears.
Honestly, I just love how relatable this is regardless your sexual preference or identity. Love is love and heartbreak is heartbreak and man, do you feel it! Such a beautiful movie.
You mentioned their on-screen chemistry despite not meeting until they arrived in Italy. At interviews and press junkets, they both mention that Timothée had arrived 6 weeks early to learn Italian, piano, and guitar, while Armie arrived about 3 weeks after that. Much like the movie, Timothee played tour guide and since shooting days were short (by American standards), they spent evenings together having dinner, discussing scenes, watching movies, listening to music...
Since Luca Guadagnino lived in the town where the film was being shot, he’d also entertain the cast at his home.
The “cocoon” of Italy helped the cast really live the experience so that’s why the chemistry seemed so natural.
Very well articulated! with the exception that Chalamet is to be pronounced as Sha-la-mae, and Sufjan Stevens as Soo-fien Stevens.

It’s February 2023 and I just watched this movie a couple of months ago. I’ve seen it several times since. There’s an extra on the DVD with commentary by Timothee and Michael which is wonderful. They talk the viewer through the movie and hearing their appreciation for each other’s work is stunning. Great review guys, I absolutely agree. Thanks

I was so waiting for your review, I didn't know you were gonna do it before the US premiere. did you guys like watching it better than " Dunkirk" or not? which one should win best picture? I've always prefered sensibility and pure character study, and in this case, character developement and coming of age. but you guys both gave dunkirk a 10, which says a lot.
