i think marzia knew the whole time. after the dance scene when marzia and elio when swimming marzia says “are you only with me because you’re mad at chiara?” and elio says “why would i be mad at chiara?” and she says something like “because she likes oliver”
Honestly Marzia was such a team player. I wanted to dislike her for getting in the way of Oliver and Elio but I couldn’t bring myself to. She was so sweet and wanted to still be friends with Elio even after everything that happened between them. She deserved love, even if it wasn’t Elio’s.
Virginia Lane Oh she knew somewhat but liked him a lot. Marzia has been close friends with Elio for a long time so she knew him well enough to guess at what was going on. She ended up forgiving him because she realized that he just didn’t like her that way, and she accepted it. She’s still his friend, always will be.

When Elio asks his dad, "Does mom know?" He means, "Does mom know [about you]?" His dad had just confided in him that he almost had what Elio and Oliver had, and never found anything like it again. That would include his marriage. Personally, however, I think the mom definitely knew. She was just that strong and gracious and loving of a woman, that she accepted and loved both her men---her husband and her son---for who they were, and cherished them for it.
no he meant does she know ab oliver and elio and the dad was heterosexual but he was talking about a time when he was with a girl he couldve loved but he held back
HickoryDickory86, I agree with your interpretation. It just wouldn't make make sense that the director needs the audience to know what dad knows about mom's perception of Elio and Oliver. 1) We as the audience already know mom knows. 2) What difference does it make for us to know whether dad knows mom knows (or not).
Just to reiterate, mom definitely knew. Her body language later on in the movie shows: when Oliver leaves the breakfast table first, her eyes instinctively peers at Elio. Furthermore, she explicitly asked Elio whether he liked Oliver.

12:53 he missed a cool factor in the movie. Elio had been on the phone 2 times prior to this. First with Marzia and then with his mother. Both times he was unable to recognize them; two people whom he had known his whole life. But he was able to recognize Oliver instantly.
I'm glad you picked up on the little things that make this movie incredible. Everyone who worked on this is an amazing job. Hope you do more videos like this in the future!
This guy was way overreacting to the Dad. If you notice when Elio asks his Dad whether Mum knows, it's unclear whether he's asking about himself or about his Dad. It's a subtle and beautiful touch.
Wait, what implies that dad is talking about his sexuality? From what he said I get that he found someone who could be what oliver was to elio but he didnt go for it and settled with elios mom. Dad could have a love story just as powerful as elio and Oliver's. Not necessarily with a man. But I have seen so many people say that, and I'm genuinely curious what gives it away?
Fun fact: they filmed the movie in chronological time so they could feel everything so real, and at the end timothee had a little like AirPod (¿) and he was listening to visions of Gideon
The age of consent in Italy is 14. Serenityq26 - what you said is disgusting and derisive, apart from the fact that it’s factually wrong. Did you not watch this film? Elio (the 17yr old) pushed for a physical relationship, Oliver tried repeatedly to prevent it.
serenityq26 “White” so you think that if someone is “supporting” that that’s automatically a white thing? What do white people do today that is pedophile? In Afrika a 13 ist married to a 26 so is that not pedophile. That happens really often in Afrika but I don’t say supporting Pedophile is a African thing? And he didn’t even supported Pedophiles. you’re so mad about 1 Year till he’s “legal” (in America but they are in Italia”) but his parents where fine with him and he also was Oliver never forced him to do something and didn’t try anything it was always Elio. So yeah watch the movie before you talk about stuff you don’t know nothing about
I feel that when Elio asks: "Does mom know?", he means the deep love he and Oliver felt for each other, something that the dad has picked up on, displayed by his deep monologue, but the mom, throughout the entire movie, views the relationship as a summer fling/ teenage crush rather than fully realizing the extent of her son’s feelings and experiences, so I thought that was a really nice aspect of the movie when the dad says "I don’t think she does."
I honestly thought the dad was telling Elio he was gay too, and that's why he was asking if his mom knew. Like I've only watched it once and that's what I thought and I'm here shocked that no one thinks that too lol
@@eneswk same, I thought his dad was saying how he was in love with another man once and so Ellio was asking if the mom knew that the dad had those feelings
Some stuff in the movie I don’t understand, or at least I didn’t as much the first time, I’m catching on to things more and more when I watch the movie, but that part of him asking if mom knows is the many little stuff I hear throughout the movie that don’t fully understand but I questioned it and thought a lot about it afterwards trying to comprehend, the mom seems aware and accepting of Elio and Oliver but like u said in that summer fling/crush type of way, she’s doesn’t know the full extent of what they’re actually r to each other but the dad seems very aware, the dads iconic talk with his son he’s sounds like he even had sort of the same thing Elio and Oliver had, this movie makes me feel and think so many things it’s crazy
@@eneswk Your interpretation is correct. ELIO asked his dad if his mom knows this heretofore-unknown story of his father's gay past. This revelation shatters the seemingly perfect and open family life they have. But yes, some things are better left unsaid.
Richell R. i think oliver said “do you mind?” hoping that elio would stop him. of elio had said “yes, i do mind.” then oliver wouldn’t have married her. it’s a shame that elio didn’t say anything
This movie has sooo many amazing things to appreciate, but something I personally really enjoyed is that it never felt slow in a bad way. Like, the movie as you said didn't have thaaat much dialogue, there were long scenes just based on body language, yet they were made in a way that they felt so necessary and the acting just was great. All this moments without dialogue could've slowed down the movie but they didn't, it flows perfectly. Like the scene in the end of Elio crying infront of the fire place, at that point one could just stop the movie and skip that crying scene, you technicaly wouldn't miss anything "important" yet in my opinion is one of the most important scenes in the movie and it's just perfect.
12:40 It's funny, I never interpreted the "does Mum know?" as Elio asking about him and Oliver, but about that Dad has come close to true love once, and it wasn't with her.
Same, I was so confused when Dylan mentioned Oliver and Elio, like "wait, isn't he talking about his dad never giving himself completely away to another person?"
True, I'm sure he wasn't... Surprised no one told Dylan like higher up, I thought the dad had something with someone he shouldn't have had feelings for.
@@danielag.medrano8987 He came back around at the end of the vid and mentioned that he realized it I believe. Or rather caught his drift later on when he mentioned how much he loved the dads monologue
That speech from his dad changed my life. Like, literally it changed my way of handling relationships. This book and movie are so touching and I cry even watching just your video lol. There are rumours that there's gonna be a sequel and I hope Luca (the director) gives them a good resolution because the book doesn't and that left a hole in my soul. I love everything about this story ;;___;;
caro when I read it two or so years ago, I understood this as Elio finally being able to feel love of some sort. Before he really didn’t love himself en hearing Oliver say his own name (Elio) back to him in a loving way they made that love connection. I don’t know if I really understood it as how the writer wanted it to be interpreted but I found it a sort of victory for Elio to finally feel some sort of love
@caro I thought it was a reference to marriage/union. When a couple marries, the wife usually takes her husband's last name. Since they are both men I guess they would take eachother's last name. So the "Call me by your name, and I'll call you by mine" line, implies that they are life long lovers in a sense that are taking eachother's identity for their own. They form one bond.
Another thing I really enjoyed about cmbyn is that the same sex attraction was never a source of conflict or despair, which is so unique. Even if it is realistic that thats what happens, it nice to see lgbt people in movies who can just exist and be happy, not have to suffer for their arc.
You didn't pick up the dad part. The dad once had his own Call Me By Your Name story but never came close to being with that person.. he kinda meant he settled for the relationship with Elio's mother.. that's what he meant when he asked "does Mom know?" (About that relationship)
I agree that the story jumped too quickly to the winter scene. It would have been intense if we had been given one or two scenes showing Elio normalizing and adjusting to life without Oliver during the fall, autumn colors fading in, beginning to get over the heartbreak... and then to get that phone call and have to relive it all over again. All the same, an outstanding movie, and this was one of the best review and reaction videos for it. Great job.
The problem with that is the family leaves and goes back to the US for the school year and only comes back for Christmas season. The book skips straight to winter, and I don’t think they wanted to establish him at an American school and a whole new location just for a montage.
Love seeing a more masculine "presumably straight" guy watch a movie like this instead of a superhero movie or action film. The way he delved into the story and analyzed is so refreshing to see from a younger straight guy. Love the video!! Can't wait to see the movie!!!!
Ok in the scene where his dad is comforting him in the end, I think he didn't realise the dad was coming out to his son in a very subtle way. And Elio was asking if mum knew he was gay not Elio himself. Or at least that's what I got from it
the guy with the white blazer who watches elio play the piano is the author of the novel YOU SHOULD READ IT you will hear what elio is thinking when he’s not talking in the scenes in the movies ITS THAT GOOD OF A BOOK i read it before watching and you will hear him in the movie because you know what he’s thinking

We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster , that we go bankrupt by the age of thirty. And have less to offer , each time we start with someone new. But to make yourself feel nothing , so as not feel anything. What a waste. 💔 ugh
I was really drunk when I watched this movie and I was expecting it to be a nice summer romance so I sobbed relentlessly through the end of the movie and then got incredibly angry because the ending made me sad. Also when Oliver said he was getting married I literally shrieked
I love your reaction and how you point out the silence and how it speaks volumes. I remember when first watching this I thought that they said something to each other at the train station but when I rewatched it I realized that they don’t actually speak to each other. Their connection and emotions are so palpable it just seems like they’re speaking to each other.
I cried on and off for three days straight after I finished watching. Truly it is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. Everything is just freaking AMAZING
By the way Dylan, the “I don’t think mom knows” was talking about the father’s homosexual relationship when he was younger, which is what he had just confessed to elio. That’s what elio was asking about
I think he was saying that he'd come close to have a love like oliver and elio did (or do), not that it's with a man (well, could be) but more of like the feels, like this intense first love, it's just what I think tho
No. "Does Mom know? I don't think she does" is about Elio/Oliver relationship. Dad lies to Elio in that moment. Luca didn't like the line because clearly she did know but the author insisted it be in there for some reason. Plus, I know it's a bit confusing but Dad didn't confess to almost having a gay relationship. He confessed to not being courageous enough to love as deeply and with as much abandon as Elio did.
I like to think that the pause Professor Perlman takes as he looks in his wife's direction before he says to Elio "I don't think she does" means he doesn't want to speak for her. So, he tells a white lie until Elio can talk to her himself. I also read somewhere that a scene was cut in the Perlman's bedroom that makes it clear that they overhear the boys. I love that idea. They are so cool. His mom's gorgeous.
His mother actually didn’t know until later, her line “he likes you” was actually taken from a book character Vimini (she figured them out) she was a 10 year old genius with terminal leukaemia, in the book she had a whole side plot going. since the line of great importance with Elio figuring Oliver out they gave the line to the mother.
As a gay man I appreciate your reactions on both channels to the LGBT content. I was wondering in your reaction you commented when Oliver ran his finger around Elios. Rene nope, if you have read the book then you’ll remember how the dad continued the sentence with “but even if she knew i think her reaction would be pretty much the same” (referring to his reaction to the topic) which already gives away the fact that they were speaking about Elio. They cut that out, i don’t know why tho
When they're talking about mum knowing I think they mean about the dad not being fully in love with the mother and the father possibly being gay.. that's what I thought when I watched the film awhile ago

Or the waterfall one
@caro in the book, oliver says that while doing elio... so the meaning is really powerful as their bodies complement each other
caro it’s their own way of saying ily
caro when I read it two or so years ago, I understood this as Elio finally being able to feel love of some sort.
Luna S. aaahhhhhhhh

I remember when first watching this I thought that they said something to each other at the train station but when I rewatched it I realized that they don’t actually speak to each other. Their connection and emotions are so palpable it just seems like they’re speaking to each other.
i love how dylan reads the movie in such a detailed way
I cried on and off for three days straight after I finished watching. Truly it is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. Everything is just freaking AMAZING
Like Hephaestion, who died
Alexander's lover
Now my riverbed has dried
Shall I find no other?
My song
do you think Hephaestion was Alexander's lover?
@@akshitamaheshwari2978 You should watch the film Alexander, starring Colin Farrell
@@Dove101 it was a shit film lmao. Also there's no reputable evidence that Hephaestion and Alexander were lovers
It's Christi I respect your opinion about the film but regarding Alexander’s sexuality it’s merely common knowledge...
The director wanted us the viewers to feel what Elio was feeling, especially during the credits they wanted that scene to stick. It was good
By the way Dylan, the “I don’t think mom knows” was talking about the father’s homosexual relationship when he was younger, which is what he had just confessed to elio. That’s what elio was asking about
ikr!!
That's actually up to interpretation, I so it as he never found true love
Wizardporn2008 The mom in the movie CLEARLY KNOWS. The director obviously made a different decision to the writer of the book.
When mystery of love starts playing, I'm crying from then on till the very end
"What genre?"
" Timothee Chalamet "
😂😂😂😂😂😂
As a gay man I appreciate your reactions on both channels to the LGBT content. I was wondering in your reaction you commented when Oliver ran his finger around Elios. Mouth if you missed the fact it was exactly as Oliver first touched the face of the statue? Your action as filmed was how I felt till I watched the second time.
This might be my favourite reaction of yours, I keep coming back to it. Thank you
Timothée cried during the credits, if that’s not good acting then I don’t know what that is
I watched this movie recently, and I remember the feels during dad's speech; but to see this again and see Dylan's reaction at the same time - tears rolling..
