      I think it depends on the movie and the viewer. If the movie is a blockbuster, you expect to be plot driven and to have fun with it watching the characters do stuff. If it's a character based movie, the plot doesn't matter much, but your characters and what they think/do. People who tend to watch plot driven films think character driven films are slow paced and boring. People who like character driven films tend to think that plot driven films are plain and dull. It depends on the viewer.
      I tend to like more plot driven movies, but I love character driven ones when I can identify with the characters, like in this one.

      Al Levine I agree but for some reason it didn’t do anything for me here. I wasn’t engaged in the plot and felt like I was watching a documentary rather than a movie. Which I guess works but I was surprised how I wasn’t as into it as everyone else seems to be.

    About not knowing enough about Oliver, that's because it's dealt exactly like that in the book. But honestly, the fact that there are no obstacles in the way of the character's journey is what makes me love this movie so much. It's as the director called it "A pure celebration of love". It's rare to find a movie that takes its time like that without antagonists or melodrama. It's real and genuine. This movie is craft.
    A++++++ imho.

    • @scifinerd17
      @scifinerd17 6 лет назад +80

      Demetri J It most certainly did, the conflict wasn’t necessarily them keeping their relationship a secret, but them leading different lives and drifting apart once Oliver left. It didn’t need to be anything tragic. It’s just the characters’ emotions, that’s all you need. And this movie did it great thanks to the amazing performances by Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer. That’s the sadness of it all with the story of those two. It’s especially sad when Elio’s father revealed himself to also be gay but settling in his relationship with his wife. Not being truly happy. Michael Stuhlbarg gave a great performance in that scene.

  • @junkaiyang9657
    @junkaiyang9657 6 лет назад +258

    Actually, Oliver implied the "obstacles" from time to time in the film.
    When they first kissed lying on the grass after Elio took Oliver to his secret spot, Oliver stopped and said they couldn't do this
    He asked if Elio is going to hold what happened that night against him. (The night they first made love actually) I actually felt really sad when Elio replied no, you can definitely hear his heartache. How possible Elio is going to hold that against him because he truly loved Oliver.
    And several days before Oliver's departure, they walked on the street and Oliver tried to kiss him when they stepped into a small alley and Elio hinted what if someone saw this...
    All of those little detail actually told you that it was hard to be falling for a man as a man in the 80s. But you don't need to make the movie all about it. Seriously, I'd prefer it stay simple and the movie just about the 2 of them. Not every gay movie needs to have so many obstacles, like as a requirement. I'm tired, let them just fall in the goddamn love. What makes everything so sad is that, in such a secluded environment (small town in Italy), with supportive parents, and not much against them in general, they still couldn't be together. Oliver still went back to USA and got married as planned, and Elio somehow, could never escape the love. In the book, he describes, himself having 2 parallel lives, one is frozen ever since Oliver was gone and stayed 17 until he met him again, and the other kept living in his body and grew.
    Seriously, this movie has a lot details you guys should really dig into. It is just as beautiful as I have imagined when reading the book. It doesn't need to be so drama, so cliche Hollywood, so conventionally intense.

    I actually really enjoyed the lack of obstacles in the film. That way, more of the focus is given to the subtle dynamics between the characters throughout. Had there been some great hardship for them to face, it would have forced the kind of drama this film very much tries to avoid. It is slow, but in that patient pace comes an amazing amount of genuine emotion, pure and not over-dramatised. Enjoyed the review, thanks!

Elio's father's "lecture" to him, followed by the drastic change to winter, the phone call, and Elio's reactions. I had a 3 month relationship with a guy I love dearly that he ended a couple of months ago. He was only the 2nd guy I'd ever dated, and it ended in my having my heart broken--in the traditional sense of the term--for the first Tim's in my life. Hey Chris. I'm going to have to disagree with your "obstacle = drama" comment. For me, the movie was mostly about internal obstacles., rather than external, which are the kind you are referring too. In the beginning of the film, what keeps Elio and Oliver from becoming close isn't a sense of shame or morality regarding their sexual proclivities, but the fear that the other, seen as "better" by both men, would not want them. In Elios conversation with his father he says that he believed that Oliver was BETTER than him. His father replies that Oliver would have felt the same way about Elio. The scene where the title of the movie is uttered, "call me by your name", is the moment where Oliver recognizes that to get over the hurdle of envy, they must almost switch places, to experience love through the other's eyes. That's what I think makes the movie so special. It's not about any kind of externally forbidden love., but by the love one denies oneself because one does not see themselves as worthy of being loved by the one they want.

    • @martincordova6827

      Carlos Miguel Ugalde
      Hey Carlos, good to see that you cares enough about my comment to reply. Forgive me, but i actually never got around to seeing Carol, but I don’t know that the movie completely lacked conflict. Elio was conflicted about his attraction to an interloper who he’d openly mocked, on top of being, well, a dude. That conflict then shifts into Elio’s fear of being abandoned after taking the leap. You may not relate to the fear of rejection and confusion of identity, but to me, this is a worthy reconstruction of romantic coming of age stories. And while I did not see Carol, I can assume you mean to compare them because they both feature gay coupled. This is a trite and lazy comparison, I would imagine.

    I disagree with the “it should have more obstacles” part because in most LGBT love movies you have some kind of cliché obstacle like unaccepting parents or one member of the couple getting beaten up by some radical homophobe group. It’s so refreshing to finally see a film that doesn’t portray any kind of violence or injustice towards LGBT couples and just treats them like it would with a hetero couple. It’s beautiful to see Oliver and Elio explore their love without anything but time in their way. No hate, no violence, just love and the bittersweet consequences of the only obstacle every single human being shares: Time.

    More obstacles? Moonlight was over years. This movie is 6 weeks. Time is the obstacle. Also, the story is Elio's, a 17 year old is not caring about Oliver's back story. 17 year olds are not looking at deeper meanings, the only depth is their emotions, that is the story, not what they did for the past 5 y or 10 years that brought them to this moment. The moment is the story.

    Psst. Guys.
    He didn't call it "gay" because neither of them are gay. They're both bisexual.
    Additionally, it was the director's wishes that this not be referred to as a "gay movie" - according to the director, it's a film about "beauty of the newborn idea of desire, unbiased and uncynical, with a sense of joie de vivre. If this movie has one lesson", Guadagnino said, "it's that actually, we should always be very earnest with one's feelings, instead of hiding them or shielding ourselves."
    So there.

      James N. O'Sullivan Its also because the characters themselves don't really put a label on themselves. You get that vibe from the book too. The characters are these very intelligent philosophical types who see beauty before gender. It cements that later on in the end as well since**************SPOILER ALERT********************************

    Just saying that it's a bisexual tale, not a gay one.
    By reading the book you can clearly tell that both guys are bisexual.
    If you're bi and you're with someone of your same gender, that doesn't make you homosexual; if you're bi and you're with someone of the opposite gender, that doesn't make you straight.
    That's just what my bisexual friend told me when I mistakenly said that this was a gay themed movie.
    That been said, it's a masterpiece, a movie truly made to enchant generations on.

    Call Me By Your Name gave me the same feeling of being there (in on the secret) that you described. I think the not having "obstacles" is what adds to the uniqueness of this film. In stories similar to this, we often look for that struggle or the big unveil and though this one has its own version of that it does it in a way that is believable. Moonlight tells its story with intersectionality so on top of discovering his identity the protagonist has all of these other obstacles that make his life hard overall. I think it’s nice to see another take on this discovery of identity that isn’t following the same script as you pointed out. I really enjoyed this film and it was one of my favorites of the year. There is talk of a sequel so maybe we will see more into Oliver, it would be interesting if it followed Oliver since this has more of Eilo’s perspective.

You nailed in that you feel as if you are present and privileged to see into the dynamics of their relationship. I thought the same thing about the flies...I think it was partially the realism of the locale but more so a nod to the fleeting moments between the two or even a nod to the fact the we, the audience, were the flies. Acting was superb. Hammer and Chalamet are breathtaking in their roles. Watch the press videos of them together and you can see the chemistry off screen. Film isn’t meant to be consumed like fast food. It’s meant to be tucked into and savored like a wholesome dish. This film was like that. This is not a background film you can just talk over or pause or get distracted by. It’s the kind of film you escape into. I felt like I was able to escape this quarantine and be in Italy. I loved the way the characters switched languages back and forth and gathered for meals and stole kisses and caresses, smoked cigarettes and swam and played and read and traveled. I loved that they walked around in shorts and bare feet and no shirts sometimes. I felt like Elio was introducing me to Italy and it’s culture. It was beautiful to see two people fall in love and be so intimate, regardless of their gender. Having a deep connection with another human being is amazing, magical. The movie did a fantastic job. It gets an A in my book.

    Your comment about obstacles these two character should face troubles me, especially in the comparison to Moonlight. Why does there need to be obstacles? As an lgbtq person, this is the first movie where being lgbtq comes with no obstacles. The conflict presented isn't tangible. For once, the conflict isn't society, parents, self worth, or anything that we get to see, it is time. For once, a portrayal of lgbtq people in our world were treated as just people, a small slice of life where them being lgbtq is not an issue. There is no tangible conflict or obstacle these characters face because there shouldn't be, because they are just two people who are alive with time not on their side.
    As for your comparison to Moonlight, the two movies don't share similar themes. Moonlight deals with masculinity, identity/self worth, race, and the dynamics of poor disenfranchised communities. This movie deals with our relationship with time, obsession, and friendship.
    They don't share similar themes, they both just have lgbtq people in them. That doesn't make their experiences the same, and both movies showcase a completely different life, character, and thematic message.

    I think the lack of challenges they have to overcome (apart from Olivers obviously internalised shame, and the ever present closing time of their summer together) is actually what made this movie so impactful to me.
    It is heartbreaking at the end even more so because you realise that their relationship had the potential to last so much longer than it did, especially with Elio's loving and accepting parents. It feels like it wasn't too far out of reach, and yet it still ended. And really, did it have to? This movie takes away the happy ending that it so easily could have given to us. I think that's a feeling many of us can relate to.

    How refreshing to see straight men embracing this film. It not only shows maturity, confidence and security with your own sexuality (unlike many homophobic “straight” men), but it also shows that when love seems organic and natural it just seems like love, not gay love or straight love - just love.
    Why are straight men in other countries so much more secure in themselves and mature about gay topics and scenarios than they are in the United States? To be honest, I don’t think that they’re any different here but they just don’t want to show it. I’ve talked to a lot of guys that when they are being open and honest or drinking a lot more sensitivity comes out. It’s just that they don’t need that in other countries. It’s one of the reasons other countries see many Americans as so immature.

    One of my favorite things about the movie is that there is no villain. No AIDS, no gay bashing, no homophobic parents who don’t approve etc. it’s just a story about first love, and two people who have chemistry, but are in two different phases in their life so it sadly doesn’t work out. I wasn’t too big of a fan of the books and where the story went in those, and I’m really happy with the changes made in the first movie. In a perfect world the new sequel film they are working on will take a completely different path and find them seeing each other again 4-5 years later. Possibly ending up together?

    I actually think that the "lack of" obstacles was a good thing. Even though they already had obsticles (being two gay men in 1983) the movie was so slow and calm almost, that drama wouldn't have really fit. Also, nobody other than themselves and their situation actually restrained them. Its almost as if everything let them fall in love knowing it would soon have to be over. I personally think thats what made the movie so beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. Also, the lack of drama and conflict actually made it feel more realistic because in life you don't see "drama" the way you see it in a movie. It isn't so in your face. But overall I think them just falling in love and time separating them was enough to make me fall in love with this story.

    I don't understand the double standard where an underage guy can have a relationship with an adult and it not being wrong in this film. I guess because they are good looking and the viewers wish it were happening to them. If it happened in real life...people would be calling the authorities.

    Oliver is my favorite character in this story and I do believe he’s largely meant to be mysterious to both Elio and us. We learn little tidbits about his life, enough to paint a rough outline of his personality and motivations, but not quite enough to sufficiently ‘know’ him. I think that’s one of the many reasons he’s so incredibly intriguing.

      What about the FACT that this is a pro pedophilia movie? What about the FACT that the only 3 or 4 people that mention age things are afraid to say what this movie is? Pure pedophilia. This would not fly (at least for the next 2yrs) of it was a 25yr old man and 16-17yr old girl.
      Be a man, Call it what it is, do not be ashamed or shy for calling out pedophilia. They are monsters!

    I totally disagree with the "more obstacles" critique. As an lgbt person myself, I get really tired of lgbt movies always shoving some unecesary drama in our faces, it's either a disease or just society forcing the characters to hide or run away from their love, we can never get a movie where two people will just love each other in peace, they either die or have way too many obstacles to stay together. even if in Call Me By Your Name they didn't stay together by the end, the movie treated them in a far more loving way than most gay movies, and that's why the end hit so hard, the love, like you said, was palpable, and made the viewers feel hopeful for the characters future, the movie even hinted at a possible happy ending when it showed that Elio's family was supportive towards their gay relatives, but Oliver's own personal life was still a big issue, specially in the 80s. Still, it was refreshing to watch a romantic movie that I could relate to without a constant struggle and characters acting sad and miserable because they're gay, it was beautiful, hopeful, and light.

  • @larapaulyn1488

    the lack of obstacles in this movie is what made it beautiful and realistic. the antagonist is the time, themselves, the society and the life itself that they're living in. Sure, Elio is free and has supportive parents, but Oliver had a girlfriend, a father that would throw him in a facility if he finds out his son is dating a guy, and he was just there to finish his book and nothing more. this is why lots of people can relate to it and fell in love with it. we don't need that dramatic CONFLICT to feel real love. when i started to watch this movie with no idea but the trailer, i never knew I would cry so much after and think about it for weeks and until now. there's something about this story that touched me in different levels.

    “Call Me By Your Name” is a great film. Its beautifully shot flick that takes place in a small town in Italy and it’s like a spending time in summer. Like stay in the sun, stay quiet in the summer stand, and stay relax whatever with your friends and relationships (kind of LGBTQ by the way). The characters were excellent including Timothée Chamalet’s outstanding performance which he has done very well in his young appearance in the movie and Hammer is always well acted and well mannerism in this movie also. Two of them worked well and they seem connected like much gay couple whenever they stay connected or something secret on their own. The story is nice and just a summer days of relaxing and then one character is being sympathized to relate one traveler who wants to be connected as lovers. The music is beautiful, the cinematography is gorgeous, and it’s the good-looking movie. One issue is that sometimes the gay slurs and other have to be hand to hand in other gay things they do is a bit weird and sometimes can be a little forceful and they have to do what they manage to be gay people as themselves. However, they seem okay and the whole part is where these young guys have to be bonding each other as they do in this movie. Great movie and I give 9/10.
    Call Me By Your Name was nominated 5 Academy Awards for Best Picture.

    Watching this movie made me remember how idealized first love can be and therefore the most painful one. It's like the summer in the film represents a season, a brief finite time that will eventually end. But the memory of it never fades, even in the warmest or coldest of seasons.

    I love both of your interpretations of what the flies could mean. I noticed them too but never thought to look into them like you did, awesome. would love to hear your other interpretations of subtle things in this film, its got to be one of my favorites. I love how it doesn't follow the rules like you mention, and the slow buildup really does put the audience into that lazy summer right there with the characters, which allows the relationship between them to be the focus. your critique is spot on too, i would've liked to have felt more attachment to the characters.

  • @congratsyougotpwnd
    @congratsyougotpwnd 6 лет назад +1

    The true antagonist in Call me by your name is time. Like you said, just like with the fly, its life is short. Elio and Oliver both kow their time is up when summer comes to an end. It's summer in Italy and all they do is read, swim and go on bike rides - they're in their own little world where time doesn't matter. It's paradise - an ideal world, in many ways. The obstacles in their day-to-day lives don't seem to matter either (e.g. Oliver having an on-and-off relationship with a woman). Despite the ever looming obstacle of time, they choose to ignore it in favor of being with each other. Having each other fully for those few summer weeks. When they return to everyday life, they're forced to face time, distance and other obstacles, which in turn complicates things.
    I think time is a big enough obstacle and Luca (and André Aciman) definitely made a conscious effort in not giving them hurdles in the form of homophobic bigots, sickness or death, which is a trend in a lot of LGBT stories. It's refreshing to see an LGBT story where the hurdle is as universal as time itself.

    Chris you are sooooooo right. This movie was so amazingly good. The story was so real and beautiful and believable. The feeling of this film was so genuine I couldn’t take my attention away from the screen. Definitely a great movie. You feel that mystery of that is he or is he not question. And then when everything comes to light how the passion for each other was so real up to the point where you see they’re falling in love. And then to feel the heartbreak for both of them. Just bravo. Sorry for the spoilers but I had to comment on it.

    CMBYN has this perception in which you feel as though you’re absorbed and immersed in the film. Hammer and Chalamet’s portrayal of the characters was extremely captivating that it felt authentic and not just simple acting. Additionally, I happen to believe that there were faint obstacles involved in this film- which was Elio’s reluctance of admitting to his feelings towards Oliver prior to confessing them later on. Overall, this movie was prominent in such a way that as a result, the audience will feel attached to not only the timeline and the setting, but also the characters.
    Both actors deserve an oscar.

    There aren't supposed to be hardships beyong time and historical context. It's just a story about two people who fall in love over the summer and grew because of it.
    By the way, that simplicity is what took the script so long to be produced. People wanted a ''bay guy'' and ''obstacles''. I think some producers wanted the mom to be against it (which would have been cheap as fuck), or something, but thankfully they remained loyal to the story they wanted to tell. And honestly, it is that simplicity that remainded me that I need to make a pause on Hollywood movies for a while and watch other stuff.

    André Aciman, the author of the book, created a story that steps away from the typical love stories. If you’re looking for a story that exposes the same things (secrecy, dangerous love triangles, unaccepting people), then CMBYN is not for you, Chris.
    PD. An A- doesn’t do the film (or the book, by that matter), justice.

    Considering it only cost $3 million to make, his film is a master class for young directors on how to get most bang for your buck and that your film doesn't need to look low budget , despite its low budget. Also not every story needs to have conflict. This was a coming of age story that was beautifully told and beautiful to look at. It has a haunting power that should have most people thinking about it for days on end after viewing.

  • @nitsugazemag

    Call Me By Your Name is a movie about two people falling in love. The conflict is that hesitation and the back-and-forth tension comes with it. I'm glad it didn't take the usual route where society frowns upon such a love, but takes its time to show love unfold. Not all LGBT relationships are fraught with violence, social backlash, etc.. Moonlight had a specific story to tell which was resonant in its own way. Call Me by Your Name might be the polar opposite where it's all about the blossoming of a romance that is both fleeting and bitter-sweet where Moonlight is about a relationship that never came to fruition, well, not in the way one might hoped for. In this regard, I feel it is unfair to compare. I enjoy both for their distinct perspectives. These are two very different film philosophies and lenses which these stories are told.
