I have to wonder if he has prior felony arrests, that he only got a slap on the wrist for... I've been noticing that a lot of these soft on crime cities, lower the crime rate, by not charging serious crimes appropriately. This is why the crime rate is actually spiking in soft on crime cities, but on paper they look like crime is in decline. They often times slap the same wrist 20 times, before they finally charge the the person appropriately, after they seriously hurt or kill someone.
Half the time though these cities are arresting people for no reason like what they did to Trump just to get money

$100k in big city maybe, where cost of living is more expensive? I am a cop in Louisiana, Baton Rouge suburb. We make $38k + benefits, which are not nearly as good as the private sector. Yes, I’ve worked both plus military.
Don’t believe for a second that cops outside of big city areas make anything worth speaking of… thus the shortage.
By the way, COL in Louisiana is not cheap either. 3rd highest insurance rates for 12 of the past 15 years nationwide.

However the benefits, being protected by a union, retirement in 20 years, company car (if your PD offers), free/discount lunch/dinner, and job security are many perks not offered at private sector in the 40k range. It's true I didn't do diligent research. I did assume smaller/rural communities had a low cost of living. I just figured all things I mentioned above would be enough to attract people for the job.

There are 3200 individual police forces in the USA. Individually, none has the resources to combat crime effectively. They have different and usually not interconnected IT and radio systems and too many felons attempt to evade jurisdictions by running for county or state lines. And none, except perhaps some state police forces, have a university level multi-year training program like is the case in most other western countries. Their low wages, poor advancement opportunities and low entry standards means that serious mistakes are made and sensationalised on platforms like RUclips.
Risk mitigation is overwhelmed by a officer or deputy's need to apprehend a criminal regardless, and before another jurisdiction can get the credit. Its not uncommon to see video of officers arguing by the side of the road about who stopped the bad guy, and in one instance he drove off in a patrol car while they argued. Its like the place is stuck in 1870.
All County police departments should be amalgamated into each state's police force and jurisdictions amalgamated. Local policing can still be done as Counties can become area commands under a Superintendent. When it's all the same police force, then resources can be pooled and felons tracked using technology like ANPR and pursuits avoided.
Me thinks that mayor has a brown nose. Should run for Congress with that word salad ability. No worries about the good guy's family.
