  • The Swiss Tech Stahlern performed well. It easily made tinder, feather sticks, kindling, and wrist size fuel to sustain a fire. And it made splitting wood very easy. The Specs are as follows:
    8.75" Full Tang fixed Blade,
4.5" AUS-8 titanium coated, stainless steel, full tang blade,
4.25" Canvas Micarta handle for a durable and textured grip,
Notch on the spine for throwing sparks and starting a fire,
    Premium Kydex sheath,
    Red aluminum accent lanyard hole,
    Included reflective fleck lanyard cord.

@thevirginiabushcrafter8833 My experience with the Haltbar has been very positive. It's a heavy knife but feels very high quality in the hand. I have mostly used it in the kitchen to cut up meat and veggies, but it is VG10, which is Japanese chef knife steel, so it performs as expected. The handle is quite righteous, very natural feeling and my favorite thing is how it feels when it gets water on it. The grip is further improved. For $50, I have not seen a fixed blade that can compete with this.

  • @Gator-357

Like the Bushman spear. I use one as a walking stick also. As for the Stalhern, I got one about 9 months ago when Walmart had the first drop on all the Swiss Tech knives. It's a tough blade and holds an egde very well. However, I do have quite a few gripes about it that they could have easily incorporated and still kept the same price point. The handle is way too blocky and presents hotspots with extended use and is too straight, should be slightly curved for better ergos. The tip is too upswept for a lot of tasks and should be a little more elongated and have a slightly sharper point. The ferro rod is on the wrong side and interferes with the thumb push when drawing the knife and tends to get snagged on clothing. The clip should be moveable, not dedicated to on side and place on the sheath and it is way too loose and the knife tends to spin around when carried on the belt. Also, I do not like the red aluminum accent insert on the handle. They could have extended the tang and kept it a solid piece without the red on it. With all of that being said, it is a very capable blade with good edge retention that can take a beating and hold up to abuse. For the price, it is a very well made and reliable blade and the G10 is very grippy, almost too grippy. With a few modifications it can be made to be an excellent fit in your kit or carry. I ended up putting on oversized burlap micarta scales that are wider and longer than the factory scales and added a couple of finger grooves for better ergos. I also removed the factory clip and sanded the sheath smooth where it mounts and added a Cold Steel small C clip that can be repositioned as desired. I also added a kydex ferro rod holder on the opposite side held in place with chicago screws and slightly flared the factory ferro holder a a thumb ramp fro better drawability.

Peace! New friend/subscriber! Great review! It’s awesome seeing a review based on real application and not just beating away on a blade for entertainment. Looks like a solid buy! Walmart sells a full tang Camillus, titanium bonded, 9.5 inch knife for about 16.00 that’s also pretty solid. I was wondering if you’ve had any experience with that one. Also, your walking stick/spear, is it hand-made? If so, is it a Cold Steel Bushman blade on it? And do you have a video on how you made it? Thanks and Blessings to you and your family!

The Virginia Grown Garden, thanks for dropping in; you are appreciated. Yes, I have the Full Tang Camillus, Titanium Bonded, 9.5-inch knife and I like it so much that I bought another one, I now have two of them. I've also used them in some of my videos. At the time I purchased them, they were $10.00, and they are some very good knives. My walking stick is a closet rod I bought from Home Depot. I cut it down and shaved some of the end off and put the Cold Steel Bushman Spear on it and then put a screw through it to make sure it does not come off if I have to use it. However, I don't have a video on how I made it, but I've used the Ferro Rod that comes with the Sheath. The Walking Sticks allows me to always have two points of contact on the ground at all times. I can also sweep the ground as I walk in the Bush to make sure I don't run into any snakes or step in any holes. Also, it can be used to keep preparators at bay at night and day and it can used as a Defensive Tool against two-legged preparators as well.

Excellent Radical. But I'm surprised the SRK is not full tang. But the Stahlern is awesome, and it will do anything that any other knife will do; it also depends on the use. Also, the Stahlern is budget friendly. Stay Safe.

@@thevirginiabushcrafter8833 I know I was surprised too as far as what I was seeing they’re a 3/4 tang, what I’m wanting my knife to serve for definitely requires a full tang. Also appreciated you stay safe as well and you just got my Subscription! Happy Crafting from your neighbor to the West! 🔵🟡

@@radicalcoyote3772 Hey Radical, I'm with you. I always carry two full tang knives into the Bush with me. One is a backup that has a four-inch cutting edge and the other is a full tang with a cutting edge up to 10 inches. I want to be prepared as best as I can. Stay Tuned and Stay Safe.

I recently purchased one these knives. It hits the marks of what I wanted from a knife for my intended purposes at a price point I can tolerate. Ultimately, what sold me was the sheath. Sturdy, if low-end material, it functions well and seems like it will hold up long-term. My problem with "budget" fixed-blade knives is the junk sheath/holster. No matter how good the knife, if the holster is useless, the knife is uncarriable. And if the knife is uncarriable, then it is relegated to taking up space in a tool box/glove compartment/fishing box. Useless for my purposes. AUS 8 is a legitimate blade steel if given the correct cryo/heat treatment. Have you sharpen that knife and if so, what was your experience?

lostcat9lives, Well Said comment. I did not need to sharpen the Swiss Tech Stahlern after using it in the Bush and giving a full review and demonstration; however, a sharp knife is a "safe" knife, and a "dull" knife is a dangerous knife. So, I sharpened it with a 10" Diamond Sharpening Rod and honed the edges with an Accu Sharp Sharpening Steel. It is so sharp now that I can hold it with my thumb and forefinger and with very little pressure, just let the blade slide down and slice paper. I am so glad that knife was gifted to me; otherwise, I would have never known about it. Stay Tuned and most of all Stay Safe.
