  • Mafia II was released over a decade ago, but does it still hold up today? In this video, I take a deep dive into the world of Empire Bay to see if Vito Scaletta’s journey through post-war America remains as captivating in 2024 as it did back in 2010. From the rich storytelling and unforgettable characters to the unique gameplay mechanics that set it apart, I’ll explore what makes Mafia II a timeless classic-or if it's been outpaced by modern open-world games.
Join me as I revisit this iconic crime saga 14 years later and decide whether Mafia II still deserves to be called one of the best open-world games ever made.

Truth could be, the open world in Mafia 2 is a means to storytelling, not the other way around. There is a simplicity to the game's linearity and the use of the open-world for this, and it's good, it's efficient. It's also one of the core problems with Mafia 3, and I think we Mafia fans all agree on that; Making a GTA-style open world just for the sake of making a GTA-style open world is not gonna do anyone any favors.
No need for a million side activities as you mentioned, it also makes subsequent playthroughs much better and less time consuming.
At first when I finished M2 and realized there is no free ride mode, I was a bit disappointed, but in retrospect, even that gives its way to build up the narrative:
*Spoilers for Mafia 2 and RDR 1 and 2*
By the time the story ends there really is no point in having a free mode anyway, as Vito's time in Empire Bay is shortened and he's soon to be exiled (dunno if that was actually the intent before Mafia 3 but still,) and even if he wasn't going to be exiled, he's practically broke, possibly soon to be homeless, barely scratching a living together living the hellish life of a mafioso. He's lost all the people he cared for due to bad luck and mistakes, he's now alone. And that's the end, it's over, a free ride mode, realistically, is pointless for the most part. Vito always was supposed to live poor, even at his best it was shortened to a couple months of enjoying that wealth.
The same also goes for RDR1 and 2, as the radical change in the player character in epilogue chapters makes the point that the previous character's time is finished, it's all gone, you can't play them no more. That makes the impact of each of their ends even more significant, as there is no return. The endings for all these 3 games have had consequences, the fun is over. It never could be there after all that's happened.

It's not a open world like mafia 3.
The world in mafia 2 was used as a backdrop for the story.
After the story you can't explore the city.
    But still great game.
    Best mafia game IMO.

Although you cant play the game after completing the story, I do find that in-between missions you can roam about the world as you please. You're not limited to the games missions. Mafia 1 is still my all time favourite but Mafia 2 is a close second.

This game is too linear to be considered a open world crimr game compared to games with more expanded content and side content such as Gta and Saints Row. Mafia is just a linear stoty based game with Empire Bay mainly being used for the storylines, side missions and side activities that are available for thr the player in each sections in the game. That is how I see it.
