Too many covers try to replicate the exact sound. Huge kudos to Radin for taking this beautiful ballad in a new direction.
I heard this version as the first one,then i fell in love with the Smith's original one. Still love to come back and listen to this one tho :)

misses the humour of the original
Mark Callaghan idk playing is straight is a good choice. The original is dripping, trying to match that is just to come off as less than. I like the cutesy romcom movie version I just wish they slipped it into a meetcute just to show no one listens to lyrics.
Beautiful, beautiful work by Radin. Just heard it and love it...he does a great cover of Yaz's "Only You" as well. I actually found this video looking for other "Girlfriend" covers as I just uploaded my own.

I agree.. this is too love ballady, this song needs to be sung with a mixture of emotionally reserved black humour and eventual hysterical despair... the seven stages of grief in one song, which was what the original (by the best band ever - The Smiths) had

I love this version and I love Radin. But still I have to say that The Smiths do it the best. I'm a big Smiths/Morrissey fan. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Joshua Radin to. But I like his own song better than his covers

I like Joshua Radin, but he'll never come close to the Smith's greatness. I think. The original is way better - and here I may sound a bit harsh, but heh. The original is one of my all-time favourite songs, so yeah, I can't do anything but sound harsh.

Why do people think it necessary to go slating peoples work when they couldn't possibly achieve anything close to the work they are slating? I dont know. I don't know this Joshua guy, but I'll put forth the opinion that if you're to cover a band such as the Smiths you should be willing to accept that no matter the dynamics of your rearticulation; you will never suffice to the genius of the original artist and should be willing to accept criticism for it.

@tinyrebellion What would be the point of somebody covering the song in the exact same style as the original artist? This is a good attempt and I'd much rather listen to this than somebody trying to do a Morrissey impression and failing. If you want to hear what a bad cover sounds like, go and listen to Noah and the Whale's attempt at this song, it's ghastly.
Gah, I mean it's good that Joshua Radin gets more attention, but why in god did Miley need to do it? I'm not saying that she's bad, but she feels like she's a product of a music company.
Completely changes the point of The Smiths, if you're going to cover The Smiths at least get the up beat tune combined with the dark lyrics

i think it's good but is too sweet. the original worked so well because the music & lyrics didn't fit & so conveyed real emotions whereas this is just a guy singing a classic song with a nice acoustic guitar. don't get me wrong i think joshua radin makes great pop music but it just doesn't feel right for the song. one of those days is a great song though!!!
