My own sister, huge Morrissey fan, passed away last fall. In her hospice room I had so many Smiths songs playing. You never know how it will be until t's yours
I always interpreted it as a failed homicide attempt... in the end he wants to "whisper his last goodbyes" (kill her for good) because the doctors feel like she could pull through and get him in trouble.
The Smiths are my favorite band of all time. I love the combination of Morrissey’s sad lyrics with the upbeat sound of the band behind him. Just fucking amazing all around.

This is the happiest, darkest song in history, but it's absolutely brilliant. To write a song with these lyrics in G major is funny as heck. Love the Smiths.
This song kills me everytime I listen to it. I had a best friend, her name was Claudia. We grew up together and did a lot of things together. Part of her childhood, she lived sick and almost die, but she got out of all that illness shit and we lived our teenage wildly and had a lot of fun. This year however she passed away and it cuts me real deep now that I'm writing this. "The Smith" in particular, were one of our favorite bands, we used to lay down on her bed and listen to the smiths and other bands on a rainy day, those moments together, were priceless for me! I used to see her sleeping and thought "I love her and we'll be together for so long". This song in particular reminds me, when she was on her 19th birthday and in coma, I was not allowed to go see her, cause' she was really going away, eleven days later, she left this world and I never told her happy birthday or even saw her! With tears in my eyes! I want to share this comment with all of you ! And say that I miss her and will forever love her and never forget her.

Just returned from holiday with my elderly mother. How lucky am I this man lost his Irish man in the last two years. And all the joy he gave us trough his wonderful music, thank you.
Heard this for the first time right when it was released and was hooked on The Smith’s immediately. I was about 19 and now I’m 51 and still hooked. How about you?
Nope. His voice still sounds like breaking glass scratched across a chalkboard sung by a deaf man trying to express disgust verbally. But - to each his own.
@@NaeroK87 you're not looking deep enough into music. Ignore any charts or media coverage and look for some underground artists theirs some real gems especially in rock at the moment
" ... but you know, I would hate anything to happen her..." So much true tenderness, love, care, in his voice when he sings this, brings a tear in my eye.
Exactly what I'm going through right now. I'm dying inside. I never had a girl like this. She is unique. She healed my broken heart. One of my angels. God stop letting the things I love get taken away. She is all I need
If you're from England and of a certain age you will appreciate how The Smiths used cultural British icons in loads of their videos and record sleeves 100% Brits - love em for it
Girlfriend in a coma, I know I know, it's serious Girlfriend in a coma, I know I know, it's really serious There were times when I could Have murdered her But you know, I would hate Anything to happen to her No, I don't want to see her Do you really think She'll pull through Do you really think She'll pull through Do ooh ooh ooh Girlfriend in a coma, I know I know, it's serious My, my, my, my, my, my baby, goodbye There were times when I could Have strangled her But you know, I would hate Anything to happen to her Would you please Let me see her Do you really think She'll pull through Do you really think She'll pull through Do ooh ooh ooh Let me whisper my last goodbyes I know, it's serious
This song has always cracked me up. I took it to be a spoof on those old 1960’s teen trauma songs, like “Teen Angel” etc. Totally unexpected and refreshing from a band like The Smiths, and just one more reason to love them.
I understand this comment is three years old, but thank you for posting your interpretation. While I LOVE the Smiths, I have never understood what this song is about. But your take on it makes sense to me and I will be adopting it now :)
It’s unexpected on the surface but Marr and morrissey were both super inspired by 60s girl groups like that. You can hear it in a lot of their songs if you’re familiar w the genre
😃I am a Dutch native speaker, my English teachers sucked. Glad The Smiths, and especially Morissey, delivered such meaningful and well pronounced lyrics. In the eighties they meant the world to me and they are still relevant.
This is the first song of The Smiths that my coworker recommended to me, ever since I'm always grateful to her for introducing me to such Legends. This is for you, if luck let you see this one. To tell you the truth, talking with you about random topics and making fun of our unfortunate lives and work makes me appreciate you more. Thank you, Madam! 🤗❤️
The best decade is whatever one you're living in because you get all the music. I feel bad for the poor fucks who died in the 50s. They never knew how great music could be.
@@edwardclark7705 thats stupid. Plenty of good music in the 40s actually. I was nowhere close to born yet but to say that right now is the best decade is ludacris. If existence ended on 01/01/1990 id be ok with it. 90s music was good but id be willing to sacrifice it to never have to hear the garbage that began in 2000 and on...thats for damn sure....& why are ppl "fucks" for passing away in the 50s? Your comment is just braindead from start to finish. I guess i should expect nothing less from a millennial lost cause though
@@edwardclark7705 they had big band music, jazz, swing,, not to mention romantic, classical, baroque. Check out Louis Prima’s Sing, sing, sing. What about blues and rock and roll? You should expose yourself to other genres. The dancing looked phenomenal too.
The dichotomy of this song is brilliant. The 2 minutes of this song engages Morrisey's full spectrum of love vs. hate, but many times love and hate are close.
yeah "underground" in other words the most influential indie pop band of all time. yes they're amazing but they are NOT underacted in the slightest. some of their songs are though
One of my all time favs. Brings to mind those songs from the old 'torch' singers, like "is that all there is..." While this is satirical those were just depressing.
The bouncy intro (presumably Johnnie Marr?), is one of the most recognisable tracks ever then it is followed by almost sickly guitar playing afterwards... incredible talent the two had together.
The Smiths are incredible. I’ve listened to them for years, but for some reason always skipped this one. After actually listening to it, I can’t stop repeating it.
Fran M. K. Agreed, and when people call The Smiths miserable they mustn't listen to a lot of the lyrics, Like The Queen is Dead- "Charles don't you ever pray to appear on the front of the Daily Mail dressed in your mother's bridal veil" And, Vicar in a Tutu. Irony's just lost on some people. ;)
I was in 8th grade when I first heard this song. I was over at my new friends house, Allison Barrow, she had just moved into a house down the street from mine, and her older sister,Rachel, put this on and that was it. I was instantly hooked. It was true love. I fell for Morrissey HARD. Never stopped listening. I thought Rachel was the coolest. She introduced me to so much music. GOOD music. At that point I completely stopped listening to the radio (pop) and from there on out it was "alternative" (that's what they called it back then) music and punk.
Just sent this to my ex-wife....despite the animosity and somewhat despicable things she did, I still adore her...I joke about dark things happening to her, but I know I'd be crushed. This guy is genius.
If you discovered The Smiths from Bumblebee, know this song isnt even in the top 30 best Smiths songs. Listen to - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, I Know It’s Over (Rank version), Still Ill, Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want, How Soon Is Now?, This Charming Man, Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me, Well I Wonder, The Boy With The Thorn In His Side, Rubber Ring, The Headmaster Ritual, Asleep, etc.
I just can't stop listening The Smiths. My mom used to love it and I did give anything for them but NOW... They're genuine and I can't stop to listen them, it's annoying sometimes the way I can't get rid of it lol.
I love this song and have since day one since it was released but let me add, what I love about this song besides sounding good, I love that it is so short. What I hate about this song is it is so short.
The film is "The leather boys" from the 1950's in the UK. It was a film about a man who got married and then developed a relationship with another biker. It had to be so subtle because of the censors but the ending where he goes in a gay bar in London with all these queens is hilarious. It starred Rita Tushingham from "A taste of Honey".

I'm so sorry about your sis. It's only words I know but you'll see her again.
The writing in this is genius. It's impossible to know if he's being sincere or is secretly glad this girl is in a coma.
I always interpreted it as a failed homicide attempt... in the end he wants to "whisper his last goodbyes" (kill her for good) because the doctors feel like she could pull through and get him in trouble.
Yeah, he's worked up this heart aching scenario and then - WHAT? She's gonna get better....Noooo.
I agree it is a double entendre song like a lot of old calypso or George Formby era songs. Old Smiths and Morrissey songs have a lot of humour.
Huh... Interesting... I always found this song hilarious because I think he does a shit job of hiding his intent 😂🥰
This song is a hitter. Discovered it thanks to the Bumblebee movie
The Smiths are my favorite band of all time. I love the combination of Morrissey’s sad lyrics with the upbeat sound of the band behind him. Just fucking amazing all around.

I must know every smiths song off by heart 👍👍
I’m 35 and ever since the movie, perks of being a wallflower, love them. I can’t stand today’s music of mumble rap and auto-tune “pop” songs.

What happened to her in the end??
Hey are u ok now ? What happened ?
I hope she pulled through.
If you're from England and of a certain age you will appreciate how The Smiths used cultural British icons in loads of their videos and record sleeves 100% Brits - love em for it
When I think about The Smiths, this is the song I always go back to. It’s just perfect.
Girlfriend in a coma, I know
I know, it's serious
Girlfriend in a coma, I know
I know, it's really serious
There were times when I could
Have murdered her
But you know, I would hate
Anything to happen to her
No, I don't want to see her
Do you really think
She'll pull through
Do you really think
She'll pull through
Do ooh ooh ooh
Girlfriend in a coma, I know
I know, it's serious
My, my, my, my, my, my baby, goodbye
There were times when I could
Have strangled her
But you know, I would hate
Anything to happen to her
Would you please
Let me see her
Do you really think
She'll pull through
Do you really think
She'll pull through
Do ooh ooh ooh
Let me whisper my last goodbyes
I know, it's serious
It's bye, bye, baby goodbye.
Hats off to Johnny Marr for this diddy , and wonderful guitar piece.... made me take notice of Mr.Marr and his finesse on the acoustic.
The british pronnunciation is very cool. I really like and enjoy when I listen british bands hehe
Pura melancolia. The Smiths foi uma banda genial.
What a talented and attractive man. Most honest performer alive. So much respect for him.
The Smiths changed my life. Their music and especially the words were out of this world. 👍🏾💪🏾😁
Awesome song for then an now...I sure miss having good tunes like this...Ty youtube for existing
My favorite The Smiths song ................... greetings of Peru 🇵🇪 ...
Why is it some of the best songs are also the shortest? BRILLIANT band, Morrissey's voice and Johnny's guitar........!!!!!!!!!!!
Giuseppe Ferrazza this a short version. Go and find the extended version it will give you three extra minutes
This song is one of the reasons why the 80's was the best decade for the coolest songs.
This Man's Voice is still Heaven in 2020...
2023 until this world dies
And Dec 23
Great song. Beautiful melody combined with Morrisey's handsome face - a killer!
The cellos gives me chills❤✊️
The sheer amount of sass in the face and voice at 1:39
Guitar melodies on this are beautiful
exactly!!
thats johnny marr for ya
Unique sound , voice , lyrics! Love the Smiths!
Anybody wanna walk with me on a rainy day in a small European town, with this softly playing in the background? Such an amazing song!!
Whatttttta song! THAT uplifting beginning and then THOSE lyrics, brilliant and so catchy - short, sweet & to the point...
The dichotomy of this song is brilliant. The 2 minutes of this song engages Morrisey's full spectrum of love vs. hate, but many times love and hate are close.
His face,his voice.Love him.
Most of Morrissey's songs come with phrases from movies back in the sixties and seventies. It's not depressing, it's inspired.
Gorgeously happy and traitorously resolute. How anyone can think The Smiths are about something as simple as sadness is beyond me.
Rob Bird amen. It's always refreshing to encounter someone who gets it.
우리나라 에선 검열로 수입 금지되서 90년대 초반에 해적판테잎으로 들어봣는데 듣자마자 반함..테잎이 닳도록 들었는데...

What a tender treasure from my adolescence. I could never get tired of this masterpiece.
Greatest alternative rock band of the 1980s decade
Dark sarcasm in this song: I do love it.
The darkest lyrics mixed with such Beautiful music
The smiths are so underrated, what an amazing band.
Underrated ??? Lol
@@eduardomota2429 They’re also so underground, no one’s even really heard of them. Not even you.
yeah "underground" in other words the most influential indie pop band of all time. yes they're amazing but they are NOT underacted in the slightest. some of their songs are though
It's always the last notes that get me, after the last words. Marr's guitar speaks a thousand words to me in just that few seconds.
The smiths are addictive
they really are
the voice of Morrissey is amazing!
His voice is amazing
One of my all time favs. Brings to mind those songs from the old 'torch' singers, like "is that all there is..." While this is satirical those were just depressing.
Hadir selepas baca komen di TikTok, lagu The Times - Gadisku dalam koma. Rancak pulak lagu dalam English ni. 🙊😆
The Smiths have to be the most underated group in the world. I love his singing voice.
the smiths still sound amazing, brings back so many memory's.
Take this song with a pinch of salt i love this song johnny marr is genius on guitar and morrisey is funny yet spot on with lyrics. Love it x
The bouncy intro (presumably Johnnie Marr?), is one of the most recognisable tracks ever then it is followed by almost sickly guitar playing afterwards... incredible talent the two had together.
It's very clearly a bass riff. Try Andy Rourke instead. Brilliant player and criminally underrated.
The Smiths are incredible. I’ve listened to them for years, but for some reason always skipped this one. After actually listening to it, I can’t stop repeating it.
Love playing this one on Valentine's Day! 😂
Love how up-beat the music is- in stark contrast to the lyrics.
Fran M. K. Agreed, and when people call The Smiths miserable they mustn't listen to a lot of the lyrics, Like The Queen is Dead- "Charles don't you ever pray to appear on the front of the Daily Mail dressed in your mother's bridal veil" And, Vicar in a Tutu. Irony's just lost on some people. ;)
From a time when pop videos were bad but the songs were instant classics.
his honesty is refreshing.
Only Morrissey could make the lyric “There were times when I could have murdered her...” sound so pretty. 😂
#Facts❤
...and that's the humor.
Death is pretty
Don't forget about the strangling part!! 🤣
@Hunter Vonnegut Obvious spammer is obvious.
I'm very glad that i start to listen to The Smiths at a very young age
What a sad beautiful song. Bravo Smiths.
Ohhh the 80’s 🎶🎶🎶. Great memories 💕 great music, just simple and fun 🤩…. Such a unique song 🎶
Just sent this to my ex-wife....despite the animosity and somewhat despicable things she did, I still adore her...I joke about dark things happening to her, but I know I'd be crushed. This guy is genius.
My ex wife ended up on unsolved mysteries...don't ask me why😂
Why is this banned from hospital radio, people need a sense of humour in traumatic times
Hearing this song would quickly wake me from a coma.

another smiths song that you wish was longer, but it will never be...
...just another testament to their genius
This one started the whole ride for me.
So short , yet lots to unpack...
Try this song next time you're at karaoke. You'll get a lot of weird looks but the people that get it will lose their damn minds.
i dont get it
can u tell me why i really wanna get it or know what your talking abiut

I was a huge fan of the Smiths before I watched black mirror, heard it in San Junipero, decided to come look for the music video
I'm positive that my girlfriend was singing this while I was in a coma two months ago 😂 This is why I love her
She sounds like a keeper.
Saladbar the greatest thing i ever heard
Could u hear her? Were u able to hear when u were in the coma? (Glad ur ok btw)
'i won't share you', another song made by The Smiths, is even more of an anthem for the keepers.
people in a coma can hear, they can't react most of the time
I just can't stop listening The Smiths. My mom used to love it and I did give anything for them but NOW... They're genuine and I can't stop to listen them, it's annoying sometimes the way I can't get rid of it lol.

Beautiful tune. Intrigating lyrics. One of the favourites ever
Such a great song personal favorite of all time
I don't know why this song always makes me smile.
So uplifting, makes you ready to tackle the day ahead..
I love this song and have since day one since it was released but let me add, what I love about this song besides sounding good, I love that it is so short. What I hate about this song is it is so short.

Such tenderness, I hope she'll pull through too! Puts me in a coma just contemplating the profundity!
Loves me my mozz. Its just so special.a million memories
This song has been stuck in my head all day
The film is "The leather boys" from the 1950's in the UK. It was a film about a man who got married and then developed a relationship with another biker. It had to be so subtle because of the censors but the ending where he goes in a gay bar in London with all these queens is hilarious. It starred Rita Tushingham from "A taste of Honey".
Always a triple listen. Too cool to be so short. ❤️❤️❤️
Don’t know whether to laugh or cry at this brilliant song .
One of the finest Bands of all times...really!
