A story about a young man encountering an older, probably affluent man, on a hill in the country. Young man's bike gets a flat tire, so the older man pulls over and gives him a ride. Younger guy and older guy are possibly romantically interested in each other, but the younger man is married (?).
Johnny Marr. That opening riff. The whole song. Incredible. One of the most underrated guitarists. As a guitarist myself I can say that soloing is infinity easier than the complex chord based riffs Johnny is known for. It's easier to play one note at a time than rapidly switching chords. Also Morrissey. The most gifted and hilarious lyricist and a great singer. He is oscar wilde born again as a rock singer
The reason I started listening to the Smiths was the guitar playing. Along with the bass and drumming. It’s only as I’ve gotten older that I started listening to Morrissey’s lyrics properly.
I've spent the last two weeks learning all the guitar parts to this song. Just brilliant little riffs and arpeggios that constantly move along and fit perfectly. Genius. And the fact that he can rip them off so easily baffles me.
@@jamestolson2526 yeah i like to play jazzy, jam-bandy type of stuff, lots of soloing. To me, soloing is relatively easy compared to good rhythm guitar playing like Marr. Although the phrasing is pretty different, im sure the stuff i like to play isnt too dissimilar to what you play. I mess around with a lot of modal and pentatonic riffs, and im a decent player when it comes down to that kind of stuff, and non-musicians are often particulary impressed, not realizing its as simple as it actually is. I totally suck as a rhythm guitar player though.

The smiths have had such a resurgence of popularity especially among generation z. I grew listening because of my parents and was teased in middle school for liking them. I remember when this video had 800k views and now it has close to 50 mil. I’m happy more people are discovering the smiths.
They were massive here in Britain but never cracked America. But since their music has been used in films, video games, TV etc they finally got the fan base they deserved (similar story with the Pixies).
I wasn't much of a fan at the time the Smiths were active - like every good red-blooded American boy back then I was into hard rock at the time - but over the last few years I've grown to appreciate and sometimes even like their music.

I always thought Indie was a dumb term, because you could apply the term to anything involving independently produced music (Hardcore Punk, Post-Punk, and most early alternative rock bands were signed to independent labels). I perfer to use the term alternative ONLY for that reason, because the Smiths were an Alternative to most of the mainstream music acts of the 1980s, and they had the jangley guitar sound that was at the time being used by alternative rock pioneers: R.E.M.
Kevin Thomas I know that. But technically you could throw hardcore punk bands like Black Flags and Circle Jerks under that label because they were on independent labels. That's my biggest gripe with the term Indie. You can literally apply it to ANY rock music that has been produced and released on an independent label.
Day 4 Can't get over what my buddy said to me some days ago. "If it wasn't for the music we wouldn't have any reason to hang out". Over time it's broken my heart, and (along with other things) has made me realize the *only* thing he's had interest in, deep down, with our friendship, was the opportunity to gain something. Listened to a lot of talk today about "soul ties" and I'm looking forward to trying to break as many poisonous ones as possible. Also, God bless The Smiths
That's really fucked up dude. I don't even know you, and with things the way they are now it's probably not a good idea to say what I'm about to say, but here it goes. I love you. And no, not in a perv way, not a woke way, and neither a hippie way... Rather, just in a manner to shed some sugar upon your shit sandwich situation. So yea, from brother to brother, with chastity, awareness, and innocence as the foundation of my heart, I sincerely speak now the words of simplicity yet great power: I love you, God loves you, go in peace... that's all she wrote. Amen Have a good rest of eternity
Welcome to the comment section. It is comprised of memes (mostly ones ragging on Morrissey), people professing their love for this song or the band in general, and that one guy who uses this as a diary.
Good music always needs members, whatever the genre is you need others peoples ideas with your own skills. That is what they did in 70-80´s. Nowadays almost everybody can make a music in their basement alone with Fruity Loops or other music software and it is never the same if you don´t have others with you to play instruments/help with chords or lyrics. Music can be a good again if we stop being selfish and start doing co-operation with skillful musicians.
Tommimatskuu kinda true, there are really good musicians who would honestly I think would be better if they did more co-operation with other musicians, how do you think hip hop became the biggest genre? Rap groups became more popular than bands and there was a bigger focus on features rather than shutting out an album with songs that you wrote in your basement. There are obviously shit rappers who have no fucking talent that get popular but the majority of rappers even though to some people may sound garbage are actually really fucking talented. And it’s with that collaboration that they get better. We need more bands to try this and make more fantastic music because the whole scene seems stale rn and now more than ever we need people showing off their talent
@@f.f5771Yes exactly dude! example De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest and list goes on. I think this change happened in few decades back, because i remember that there was a really good bands in early 2000's and then when the electronic music became popular all changed brah... Mortises has beautiful phrasing. I love the way he rides the melody, staying on but finding different pockets to come in and out. Beautiful tone and great control

Johnny Marr's guitar is otherworldly.
There's actually another tune in the background playing all on it's own- but breathing in sync. That is utter genius

I first heard this as a youngster dancing drunk at my sisters wedding in 2006 in Dublin. Asked the DJ what song it was and took a strong mental note to remember the next day. Best discovery I ever made.
Ya..well...thing is... at least 47m of those views are mine :D

i think it's just the same with any gen that gets into remotely indie music, you'll eventually land upon the smiths.
I wasn't much of a fan at the time the Smiths were active - like every good red-blooded American boy back then I was into hard rock at the time - but over the last few years I've grown to appreciate and sometimes even like their music.

Punk rock like discharge or black flag is easily the best for work stress
Why is everybody trying to call this Hipster, like its some kind of genre rather than a subculture. Its alternative rock. Just enjoy the music.
Indie is the word your looking for
I always thought Indie was a dumb term, because you could apply the term to anything involving independently produced music (Hardcore Punk, Post-Punk, and most early alternative rock bands were signed to independent labels). I perfer to use the term alternative ONLY for that reason, because the Smiths were an Alternative to most of the mainstream music acts of the 1980s, and they had the jangley guitar sound that was at the time being used by alternative rock pioneers: R.E.M.
nice profile picture
+Max Seuberlich Its just short for independent. Meaning many of the bands belonged to independent labels.
Kevin Thomas I know that. But technically you could throw hardcore punk bands like Black Flags and Circle Jerks under that label because they were on independent labels. That's my biggest gripe with the term Indie.
You can literally apply it to ANY rock music that has been produced and released on an independent label.
Day 4
Can't get over what my buddy said to me some days ago.
Solitude is infinitely preferable to false friends. Be good to yourself.
How are you?

I'm glad my mom showed me these guys. I'm hooked. 80s music was ahead of its time
you had to have personality and talent then.
Music can be a good again if we stop being selfish and start doing co-operation with skillful musicians.
d x tell em! Good on ya for having this mentality
I don't mean in a bad way (I listen house/edm sometimes) but it just changed everything.
