Alright long comment coming upZ I think most of us have heard the story on why season 3 had such a dramatic shift in overall tone. Specifically, how 5ds supposedly was meant to end by season 2, the Bonds Beyond Time movie was being made around this time and such staffing was stretched thin (a similar excuse for Arc V drop in quality due to the DSoD movie production), and most insanely, Carly original Japanese VA being replaced due her being part of a real life cult (which in itself caused major changes in the anime. Such as the romantic aspect between Jack and Carly being treated as if it never happened. Yilaster changed from being a cult like organization to timed travelers. And whatever story they had planned with Aki and the Arcadia Movement, being thrown out the window. All to avoid being associated with cults). That can all be said as an excuse for the shift in tone. But even then, this season was easily 5ds lowest point due to filler, and poorly made ones at that. Like come on, give the filler to the side characters. Let Aki duel the crooked instructor for crying out loud. However, what I heavily dislike the most of this season….Is the time skip….That skip became the golden excuse to avoid the question “how did NDC and the Satellite come together? Affect people views? And what are people views on Aki, or the Black Rose Witch as previously titled?” Welp, none of those need to be answered and you’re wasting time for even thinking of those interesting, possibly episode worthy, questions. There’s a time skip, everything is good, nothing to explain here. Now let’s have a story about time travel…. Yeah a pretty rough spot for this series, that is still my personal favorite. Thankfully, in my opinion, the last season does make it worthwhile again. With an ending that only gets better with age.
This season might have only been filler, but it had some pretty solid episodes and (IMO) the best opening music out of all of 5D's (though Hyperdrive for the dub still kicks ass). That said, I've honestly wanted to do a rewrite of 5D's and this season needs the most amount of rewriting considering how much of it is filler. Fairly certain a good chunk of this season is just straight-up useless filler or can be cut. The only filler I'd actually keep is Crash Town (I don't consider Akiza's learning to be a Turbo Duelist filler, as it comes back multiple times as an important element of the story so it should be kept).
Funny how back in the day watching this religiously week after week I never realised what a filler was or the drop in writing quality lol. Dark signer arc peak tho
Yes but for a ENGLISH dub really only the first 2 were Complete Season 3 got completely removed from the English dub and the only time ZONE shows up in the Dub was to duel Yusei fudo which in turn was based on like the last 2 to 3 Episodes 5DS's had in Japan while skipping nearly all 25 + Episodes Season 4 had in Japan.
BUT the English dub cut out LOADS of Episodes of this season + most of Season 4 in English NEVER got a Dub since of the 154 total Episodes in Japan the ENGLISH DUB cut out at least 25 to 30 Episodes.
