I rented SF4 in '09 when it came out and got my ass beat online. I had no idea what I was doing outside of the normal motion attacks from Ryu/Ken and the like. Once I got to college, in 2011, and SSF4 was out, I had some friends at school that sat down and taught me how to do everything. My fighting game life changed after that moment. I am still here, year after year, because of SF4. Thank you, Street Fighter 4.

Price does the VA work for SSFIV and onward. Vanilla SFIV's announcer was different and the story there, from what I have heard from an interview (can't remember), is that Capcom had someone do the VA... and when the time came around for SSFIV, they could not find him back after his voice work was done. That SFIV announcer did had voice samples for Dee Jay and T.Hawk if you do data digging within the original SFIV audio data, which they didn't make the cut in vanilla SFIV. Eventually, those two character came through within SSFIV.

FACTS as to why Street Fighter IV is a disappointing game:
Street Fighter IV was nothing more than a mediocre game with that was a huge step back for the fighting game genre.
SFIV is hands down one of worst looking games of the 7th gen. Every character looked bulky and had down syndrome.
The music is pretty forgettable. Each track had that same tinning techno note that made the whole OST so repetitive and annoying.
The gameplay is a simplistic, all you have to do it spam shorts and then lock your opponent into a 7 hit combo to take away 2/3 of their health. Don't worry, the losing player can use a ultra combo that rewarded to the player for playing badly. . .
SFIV is bare bones as it had little to no single-player content. 6th gen fighters like DBZ Budakai 3 for PS2 blows SFIV out of the water in terms of single-player. As I said, SFIV is a huge step back for the genre.
SFIV also had disc lock like costumes which were a FREE UNLOCKABLES in almost every polygon fighter starting from the 6th gen era.
So yeah, SFIV was never good game. SFIV only succeeded based on the timing of its release, basically the opposite of SFIII failed launch. It's only well liked amongst those that were five-years-old and pretended to be like by shills of the FGC. Speaking of shills, you know the FGC is corrupt when DSP exposes them. . . . . . .

Everyone was playing, the gorgeous art style, stages & everything, it was soo amazing, its really one of the best fighting games ever not just SF titles, and its impact is sooo massive, it really revived the 2D fighting game genre, now with SF6 we are entering a new era and SF6 looking like its gonna hit big! Funny enough SF6 its the highest rated fighting game since SF4! Full circle 😂❤ so many memories, just seeing these animations, characters, how the stages interact with each blow, its amazing, also its the reason why i started watching esport! That daigo vs Justin wong evo final was legendary! Since SF4 release i got to know everything about the FGC as a community! "The appeal of Smash Bros. is that anyone can take a controller, readily pick up the fundamentals and, within the spam of ten minutes, a beginner can sit down and get loud with a pro and enjoy some exciting gameplay"

Vanilla SF4 - The era of have and have nots, being able to FADC DP into ultra was so ridiculously powerful a character basically either had it, or they weren't viable, and among those who had it, Sagat was king. Non-ex invincible DPs were just OP in general in this generation, since FADC made it safe even on block, and fire balls returned to being pretty good, albeit not ST levels of game defining. Despite some balance issues, this version will always hold a special place in my heart for bringing back SF, a franchise I don't think I quite realized how much I missed until I played SF4 for the first time.
SF4 Home Edition - Not talked about in this video, but the home edition of vanilla, while not changing the balance of the arcade characters, added a ton of new home exclusive characters who were basically all ignored in competitive play because most tournaments were on arcade cabinets which didn't have them, so all of these characters showed up super low on tier charts till SSF4 when they were finally available in arcades, despite the fact characters like, say, Cammy, were actually quite strong, just the strong players weren't using her.
SSF4 - Arguably the best version of the game, easily my favorite, significantly nerfed DPs and FADC into ultra, making characters with out DP into Ultra finally viable for the first time, and just generally compressed the tier lists as well as any SF game has ever such that an insane portion of the cast was viable and in the conversation for best in the game. Also added selectable Ultras ala-SF3, with many of them filling in gaps for characters who had largely useless or match up specific ultras in vanilla. Not relevant at high levels of play, but the nerf to DP also reduced the frequency of flow chart ken in lower levels of play, creating more variety at lower levels then ever before.
SSF4 AE - Easily the worst version of the game, this version was so bad it eventually caused me to take a break from the game, which was really hard for me after how much I'd loved the first 3 versions. Yun was massively, and per interviews, intentionally, over tuned resulting in a stale meta of yun vs yun in nearly every tournament and at all levels I played at. Also I found oni and evil ryu super un-hype personally, game already felt bloated with shotos and they just added to the bloat.
USF4 - Was briefly the best version of SF until people realized how busted Elena was. Never felt quite as bad as with Yun, more comparable to how strong Sagat was in vanilla, Elena users definitely still got upset all the time, but she was OP enough that she kept this from feeling like the definitive edition which for me, will always be SSF4. Also can confirm, almost no one I knew was hype for Decapre, the opinion always seemed to be that her inclusion felt like proof they were rushed and strapped for cash so they just re-used Cammy with a new skin, even if she did play quite uniquely.

Street Fighter IV was the game that made me go from someone who plays fighting games to a fighting game player who wanted to learn something deeper than just mashing buttons and throwing out the occassional hadouken. I'll always appreciate it for that.

i remember i was like 7 or 8 and i was in the car while my dad was explaining the characters of vanilla SF4 while driving to his friend's job at a flea market so me and my brother can actually play the game, and i was so infatuated by how cool he described them. that was the first time i've ever heard about SF or any fighting game before, so i didn't know what to expect lol. i just remember seeing the character select screen from afar and i think the first character i ever played was bison. maybe that was my brother, maybe it was me, idk, but that was one of the best times i've had playing a game, and i remember asking my dad so much to get it for me. around 13 years later and i'm getting back into it, still holds up as one of my favorite games in general

I remember sitting down and watching my brothers play this when I was still in elementary school. One of them got so good to the point where the other started banning characters 😂 So he ended up learning even more of the cast to the point where he beat him with Dan. That was the last time my oldest brother played and the beginning to when I joined in. It's kind of sad in hindsight but it was really funny back in the day, wish I could go back and relive that moment.

Watching this series the second time now, because I love Max's retrospective videos.
And I have to say, even I bought SF4 back when it got released, and my last FG before it was SF2 on SNES (and Alpha 3 for a weekend). I was not part of the FGC in any way shape or form, but seeing SF come back, got even me hyped. Idk what it was, nostalgia for SF2, just wanting to jump into a 2D fighter again, after being stuck on casual Soul Calibur and Tekken...who knows. But the itch I got from seeing a SF4 trailer was really something else. And now I still get goosebumps when hearing those first few notes of the intro of that game.
And now I am still a casual, but deeply ingrained with FGs...all because of SF4.

something worth noting with omega mode is that while a lot of the new things characters got weren't directly carried over into sf5 there are a few cases where they definitely did use a concept from omega mode for a different character, like omega Hugo had a parry/counter which functioned nearly identically to how Abigail's v skill 1 would later function in SF5, for example

SF4 was a wild crazy time. I wasn't really into SF much but when 4 was coming out, every person i knew and every person they knew, was hyped for it and playing it. If fighting games were born in the arcade, SF4's launch was when the entire genre went super saiyan. I had never seen so many people getting into a game, let alone a fighter.

I love SF IV for so many reasons. The art style was unique, the new play mechanic was simple to understand but incredibly deep on both an offensive and defensive level, and the game felt so satisfying to play. I remember the hype around this game and it creating a buzz around the genre that hadn't been there since seemingly the late 90's, as all the various other games (including some from Capcom) meant that Capcom was competing against itself much of the time. But this game stood out. It was just as much fun to watch as it was to play, and I have many memories teaching my young nephew the special moves. I still play it today, and it is my favorite Street Fighter. And yes, Indestructible is awesome.
