I loved everything about the game in concept, shame it didn’t stick the landing until it was too late. Because of its failure, Tekken x Street Fighter is in the shadow realm.
This is actually the game that got me and my 3 buddies hooked on fighting games. We had an incredible amount of fun with this game, before discovering what UMVC3 had to offer which was much more. Eventually we got into Street Fighter 4, where we all spent many, many years playing it almost every single day and entering smaller tournaments from time to time. I'll always remember those years very fondly and all credit is due to Street Fighter X Tekken for being a great entry point into fighting games :)
the amount of old hollywood undead songs ive seen you sprinkle in throughout some videos really got me! havent heard 90% of their music since i was in middle/high school...
I don't know if this is also true, but I also heard that another reason why pac-man and mega man were exclusive to the sony versions is apparently because microsoft did not want any bonus/guest characters and wanted the roster to consist of only the characters from the series the game is representing, which is SF and TK of course.
Bought this at launch and spent a good 20 hours playing it. The gem system was terrible and I eventually gave up, but never hated much about the game. Except Paul. Why he was so weak I'll never understand.
This is how Capcom became bad when it comes to marketing. Imagine releasing lot's of fighting games without focusing on one. Namco did really listen to their fans as they keep on continuing Tekken 7 as the sole fighting game they have for PS4 and Xbox.
@@_KevinLong While not worded in the best way, I think the point they were trying to make was that Namco Bandai was smart enough to not release all their fighting franchise so close together and all at once, avoiding the self-cannibalizing that Capcom's games suffered (which was already in stiff competition with other games being released) and allowing there to be solid focus.
The "3rd Strike" gag was very good- It's always a joy to have these deep dives into Fighting Games, even when they are tragic like this. It's a trip to think about 09er as a term- I wonder if a video exists examining the culture of the FGC and the shifts it took in 09 post SF4
On a personal level, It is truly a shame that this crossover did not work out. I grew up on both of these franchises from a personal and professional level. I was and still am, truly enamored with every aspect of both franchises. I remember both franchises being a big competitor for one another & then completely blown away when this game got announced. Not only was I beyond pumped but I was ready to dive into something new yet familiar to me. Then it came out and I bought it and I actually enjoy it. It’s fun for what it is but it just had so much going against it that I knew it was over before it even began. I was (& still am) bummed that this did not become bigger that what it could have been. On top of that, I was more excited for the eventual “Tekken X Street Fighter” that Harada had talked about but as time went on, I knew that we would never see that game as a reality…
Seriously what the hell happened with that film? The film so pretty and lush to look at but damn the film sucked... it’s probably why the sly cooper film was canceled as well.
I remember watching the movie in theaters with my brother. Even for how short it was compared to general movie run times, I remember coming out going "well, it wasn't bad, but it didn't feel like a lot actually happened during the course of it."
I call it "Skinsuit Theory." Draw people in with name recognition, trick them into believing the impostor wearing the gutted franchise as a skinsuit is the genuine article, and hope they don't notice the smell.
Manuel Alberto Romero I suspect (this is conjecture) that it’s a cycle of auter vs corporate. Essentially, Capcom has a stable of video game auters; people who love video games, playing and creating, and have a passion to create. People like Shinji Mikami, Hideki Kamiya, etc. Then you have the corporate bigwigs who handle the finance sector: making sure the games are profitable so the company makes a profit, and it’s possible to make more games in the future. Ideally, you want both parties to be satisfied, but sometimes the pendulum swings too far one way. I suspect RE3R was a stumble because marketing saw how much people loved RE2R, and wanted to cash in, but the devs may have been a bit burnt out, and wanted something different. They get forced into making a game they didn’t really want, and had to cram in that stupid online component instead of the popular Mercenaries. From a money perspective; online services allow them to charge more money, and they could always release Mercenaries as its own game. They fail to see that the online player royale market is tapped out, and people loved Mercenaries as a side-expansion mini-game.
On day one I went into the options, turned off the gems and comeback system, pretty much forgot they ever existed and honestly had a ton of fun with this game.
Ohhhh The Takedown!!! Proud early access owner here. AMAZING game, even since its very, very early builds (and how FAR it has come). Total love letter to 90s beat-em-ups and arcades, and a delight to play.
Hold on a minute... YOU produced The Takeover? This channel has quickly become one of my favourites over the last few weeks and The Takeover is fuckin awesome!
Bro! Seriously ‘What Happened’ is honestly my favorite videos on RUclips! I’d love to see more of these because I’ve watched the older ones at least 3 times lol. I know these take a lot of time and effort and I want you to know I appreciate the hard work! Keep it up!
Such a shame they fumbled it as much as they did. Going back to play it now you can see that there was a lot of love put into the game. The pre/post fight character interactions that make references that span the entire series of both games, great stages with dual side that have you move locations between rounds. A pretty solid palette customization system, and a huge roster. Really really wish they had ditched the gyms, on disc dlc, and just used some in house music for the cinematic trailers
3:42 When I saw this part of the video, it made me so depressed AGAIN about the fact that I'm still waiting/hoping for a new sequel/game to Justice Academy AKA Rival Schools & Darkstalkers . . .
I miss soundtracks from around this time. Shift 2 Unleashed[from future Project CARS developers Slightly Mad Studios] also had Rise Against and Hollywood Undead on their soundtrack too.
Great video as usual Matt! Somehow I have good memories of the era when SF x Tekken released... I think I was most excited about Tekken x SF... but we got Tekken 7, which sort of became that. In any case, I'm still not losing hope for a Tekken x SF. 🤘🏻
What's funny (or really messed up) is that Capcom was ahead if it's time here. If they released this between 2016-2018... On-Disc DLC, seasonal DLC, P2W mechanics, would all be accepted... Even with games that aren't Free to Play... Heck, if the gems were Gacha based, they'd have probably gotten the 12$/user average...
"Why would anyone crack the game? That's illegal!" Hello 911, what's your emergency? ...What do you mean you're being robbed? That's illegal, people can't do that.
This is actually a very interesting Episode especially since you brought up the Whole Capcom Megaman issue where, during that time, it looked like Capcom was abandoning the whole franchise. This actually crosses over with your other Whu happun, the Mighty No. 9. Both of these games are so interwoven with the whole Bring Back Megaman movement. And actually, Super Smash Bros, also got interwoven with that historical time, but with better news. It was a big reason why Megaman fans went absolutely nuts when Nintendo held that Invitational knowing Megaman newly entered the franchise and actually looked like he was finally given the love Capcom wasn’t giving him for a while. Megaman fans practically gave up hope for a new Megaman before then. Who knows whether that moment was what pushed Capcom to get Megaman back in their radar, with 11. But maybe they already had the idea, but the cancellations pushed back the date they could release a Megaman game. I guess many people speculated Capcom’s reason due to the lame excuse Capcom gave for the cancellation of Legends 3. “Lack of fan interest.” Fans were left with the feeling that Capcom didn’t find their numbers economically viable and were killing the franchise. I know the feeling. I was actually participating in the Capcom Forums, as part of the Servbot group official fan club who was supporting Legends 3 during development, and it seemed there were a ton of members at the time. Even then, Megaman fans were hungry, no rabid for a new Megaman game, as it was a long time coming. I got to see the disappointment first hand, after all that work. Who knows, maybe that speculation wasn’t really true, but Capcom wasn’t good at communicating that.
The concept was sick and I enjoyed playing it when it first came out. I remember doing massive cross combos that were dope. But in retrospect it was a disaster. It would be better for street fighter to have a guest character or two from the tekken series ala Akuma in Tekken 7.
Of all latest Capcom's fighting games, MVCI has to be the one that hurt the most. Such a fun game. I'm playing it right now and i'm having a freakin blast
I remember how this game was hyped as "fighting game of the century" by a ton of fans of both series Not even a full year of it's anniversary release the online lobbies died down & once the popularity of Street Fighter 4'S was growing immensely with it's constant expansions SF X TEKKEN died but I personally loved it

With that innocence they are definitely going to heaven
And then they'll probably get robbed even in heaven being so naive.
All I want to know is why Pac-Man was in a robot instead of doing, y'know, Pac-Man things.
It was meant to be a joke, PACman in a mokujin bot was meant to bring both to the ppl
@@theamazingmaymay123 Pac-Man in a Mokujin mech kinda reminded me of Tron Bonne.
There's always smash bros...even though he doesn't make his death sound and turn into an asterisk when he gets hurled into the air.
Previous Pac Man games... And cartoons
@Geetamer yep
The only thing that's been said about Tekken X Street Fighter was that Akuma was the most completed character so he was just adapted to Tekken 7
The story of this game just makes me so sad...
@@kennethbryant5819 I certainly hope SFV's launch, and MvCI's everything isn't a part of them mostly getting their act together.
“Remember the Vita Version?” Bro, I barely remember the Vita itself.
No matter how many times I see that SFxT trailer, I will never not be flabbergasted that they used HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD's music for it.
Wow they really did make some bad calls huh
i love me some hollywood undead, but goddamn that was a bad choice for the trailer
JambrosVEVO worse than Gangsta's Paradise for Sonic?
@@SciFiBrony gangsta's paradise was the PERFECT choice for that trailer.
I really loved this game and it was a genuine shame that it was tainted by so many issues.
Where can I play it at ?
@@hugostiglitz491 It's been de-listed from Steam so the only feasible way to play it is to either pirate it or buy a second hand PS3 physical version.
How?
How'd we lose so much

the amount of old hollywood undead songs ive seen you sprinkle in throughout some videos really got me! havent heard 90% of their music since i was in middle/high school...
Can we get a "What Happened" on Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark to coincide with the release of Spider-Man: Miles Morales in the future?
Dose Bono is What Happened?
I don't know if this is also true, but I also heard that another reason why pac-man and mega man were exclusive to the sony versions is apparently because microsoft did not want any bonus/guest characters and wanted the roster to consist of only the characters from the series the game is representing, which is SF and TK of course.
Bought this at launch and spent a good 20 hours playing it. The gem system was terrible and I eventually gave up, but never hated much about the game.
Except Paul. Why he was so weak I'll never understand.
This game the best 2 d fighting game for me
This is how Capcom became bad when it comes to marketing.
Imagine releasing lot's of fighting games without focusing on one.
Namco did really listen to their fans as they keep on continuing Tekken 7 as the sole fighting game they have for PS4 and Xbox.
Have you actually never heard of Soulcalibur VI and Dragonball FighterZ?
@@_KevinLong While not worded in the best way, I think the point they were trying to make was that Namco Bandai was smart enough to not release all their fighting franchise so close together and all at once, avoiding the self-cannibalizing that Capcom's games suffered (which was already in stiff competition with other games being released) and allowing there to be solid focus.
@@_KevinLong soul calibur 6 is kinda dead tho
I like Capcom USA guy, hope he becomes a recurring guest.
The trailers for this game were really good though, even if they were a money sink.
The "3rd Strike" gag was very good- It's always a joy to have these deep dives into Fighting Games, even when they are tragic like this. It's a trip to think about 09er as a term- I wonder if a video exists examining the culture of the FGC and the shifts it took in 09 post SF4
"Patriarch of the Tekken Clan" I laughed my ass off. Harada-san better see this and put Kiryu in Tekken out of respect lmao
Not 7 though, two seasons too late and the game is garbage now. Keep him for t8
Kiryu's creator doesn't want him fighting women.
Kiryu doesn’t hit women so he’s a no go
We are doing this the wrong way. Hear me out what if we put tekken characters in an RGG game

Man tournaments for this game were super awkward with how most games would end up having the timer run out.
Remember "Last Bronx", the forgotten little sister of Virtua Fighter?

I just picked up Last Bronx earlier this year, and I'm very impressed. Just as solid as VF2

The Ratchet and Clank Movie: What Happened.
The show’s last update was around two years ago. It was supposed to have premiered last year.
That's very simple actually, the film is just a "Jack and Daxter - All Cutscenes/Movie | 69:45"
I call it "Skinsuit Theory." Draw people in with name recognition, trick them into believing the impostor wearing the gutted franchise as a skinsuit is the genuine article, and hope they don't notice the smell.
"Dude from Infamous I don't remember his name." Matt I've never been so disappointed in you >:(
Matt didn't once say "Lame it out" during this whole video about X Tekken. He's changed, man.
Oh I'm getting your game brother! Day one! I saw footage and I'm highly impressed!!
Spiderman Turn off the Dark would be a perfect non gaming topic

Capcom of the early to mid 2010s was just all over the place as a company. Glad they got their mojo back.
For the most part. They do have stumbles here and there. RE3 remake is an example of their stumble right now.
When they need more money, can always smash the ‘port RE4’ button again.
Which they have, only now it’s a ‘remake RE4’ button instead
So, what happened for them to change direction? What structural changes occurred between then and now?
@@meyes5671 dude just go play an arc system works fighter
"why would anyone crack the game that's illegal" ok that just made me sad that poor thing.
On day one I went into the options, turned off the gems and comeback system, pretty much forgot they ever existed and honestly had a ton of fun with this game.
I really like how Matt gets developers comments to further contextualize everything
I'd love to know what happened with Megaman X6 or X7. Cause THOSE are some stories I would love to hear.
Seconded!
Same, but feel like the story probably boils down to "the interns got drunk "
They couldn't figure out 3D

Ohhhh The Takedown!!! Proud early access owner here. AMAZING game, even since its very, very early builds (and how FAR it has come). Total love letter to 90s beat-em-ups and arcades, and a delight to play.
Oopsy...Takeover :P (And i'd JUST heard and seen the name onscreen...age, bruh).
Honestly I did enjoy the game. I even feel that specific Mega man fits perfectly in the Street Fighter Universe.
He Does, Unfortunately.
Don’t care what anyone says. I would’ve loved to see him in USF4 to have the roster at a nice 45.
Hold on a minute... YOU produced The Takeover? This channel has quickly become one of my favourites over the last few weeks and The Takeover is fuckin awesome!
The trailers and addition of Cole MacGrath made me wanna play it at the time, but after seeing Bad Box Art Mega Man, I avoided it like the plague.
Bro! Seriously ‘What Happened’ is honestly my favorite videos on RUclips! I’d love to see more of these because I’ve watched the older ones at least 3 times lol. I know these take a lot of time and effort and I want you to know I appreciate the hard work! Keep it up!

High key the best capcom fighting game next to 3s
Great game, better than slow fighter 4 anyway.
I am part of this group!! I also have the vita version! If that makes me lame....SO BE IT!!
I love the game apart from the DLC practices.
I loved the game but hated the damn gems! I would probably still be playing it
Such a shame they fumbled it as much as they did.
3:42 When I saw this part of the video, it made me so depressed AGAIN about the fact that I'm still waiting/hoping for a new sequel/game to Justice Academy AKA Rival Schools & Darkstalkers . . .
Marketing: people will crack the game and find the on disc dlc
Producers: wait thats illegal
Bring it back! I loved this game it’s so underrated
The intro to SFxT was one of the hypest thing ever created
Facts !!!!!
I have to admit the best part of this game were the licensed songs from Black Tide, Hollywood Undead, and Rise Against
I miss soundtracks from around this time. Shift 2 Unleashed[from future Project CARS developers Slightly Mad Studios] also had Rise Against and Hollywood Undead on their soundtrack too.
Hollywood Undead in SFXT was epic. Love that band.
im ready for "Playstation Home - What Happened?"
"the third strike is what counts"
the only thing we ever got of the Tekken version was Akuma in T7
"If you're like me, and I know I am..." Underrated comic gold
That's illegal!"
Hello 911, what's your emergency?
...What do you mean you're being robbed? That's illegal, people can't do that.
"'Cause this story is about to get... down-right-fierce"
I just want you to know that this is why I psycho crushed the like button
Down, Right, Fierce... that's a Hadouken joke! Extremely well done!
Of all latest Capcom's fighting games, MVCI has to be the one that hurt the most. Such a fun game. I'm playing it right now and i'm having a freakin blast
"That's illegal!"
Dammit Japan, you just gotta show your paradox in adapting to modern tech.
The moment The Takeover hits the PS4, I'm gonna grab it!
I remember how this game was hyped as "fighting game of the century" by a ton of fans of both series
Not even a full year of it's anniversary release the online lobbies died down & once the popularity of Street Fighter 4'S was growing immensely with it's constant expansions
SF X TEKKEN died but I personally loved it
