    There are manuscripts and other such documents from Timbuktu. They were in the news a few years back when there was this whole buzz about radicals wanting to burn history because it somehow didn't "conform to islam" according to their warped logic. There's actually a TON of written African history out there, its just not catalogued and translated; i guess because there's not that much interest from the general public. Its also the issue with archeological research in Africa.

      The Byzantine Emperor said that Timbuktu was a far more beautiful city than Constantinople. As a gift to Mansa, he sent 1,200 Greek convicts as slaves. Mansa kept some for himself, then distributed the others amongst his noblemen. Here was a case of Black men owning white slaves.

    The problem with Mansa is that his history is mostly verbal. The only writing was from an Arab scholar in his way to mecca.

      The Tarrikh al Sudan and Tarrikh al Fattash were both written in the 1500-1600s and record him, both books written in West Africa and both able to be ordered on Amazon.

      He built all kinds of things according to the people who lived there when asked which of their ancestors built these structures.
      To add, the verbal history in African culture isn't like European history that changes depending on who won a war.

    Mansa musa didn’t only get rich off of gold though a lot of his money also came from salt deposits and slavery.
    And the gold he did have also came from the trade routes he controlled.

    I wish there was more info on what life was like for the average person in the mali empire walk around the ancient cities of timbuktu and gao, it must've been quite something in its hayday

      Read the book "Everyday Life in an Early West African Empire" by Robin Walker. Has some good detailed info there.

      Selling 2/3rds of the worlds Gold alongside Copper and Ivory were lucrative. Which is where the bulk of the Mali Empire's wealth came from.

      Yes correct. European scholars, Arab scholars and Africa scholars all recorded him, wrote volumes on him and it was even the reason that France and other explorers made the trip to Timbuktu and West Africa (Sahel) but you Eric haven’t heard so he’s irrelevant lmao…
