In naval battles you have to get the ships to surrender in order to capure them. If you win a battle, and enemy ships are routing, board them to get them to surrender. routing ships do not fire cannons, and automatically surrender once boarded, so there is no risk of taking damage.

Letter from Private James Rogers of 4th U.S Infantry Company C to his younger brother Jack " Dear Jack, We have seen action for the first time. We had orders to go engage the Iroquois Confederacy at Niagara in the Algonquin Territory. We formed up began marching. Me and Lt Jones and few other men from my company with a few men from the brit busters were sent out as scouts. We ran in to the Indians coming towards us and the army which caught us off guard. Lt Jones wrote a note and gave it to a man from the buster to give to General Greene. I had never seen a Indian before but from what I saw they look like tough people. We made our way back towards the army we all knew a fight was coming and it was was going to not easy. We were deployed on the right of the line. We saw a little of fight at the beginning. I saw the 9th Iron Brigade get hit hard but they held the own. John was slightly wounded in the army. We were order to do a right wheel at the double quick where we could engage the Indians we did take a few lost. I am fine. I now write to you from our camp just a few miles from that battle sight. I will write soon and please pray for the men we lost. Thank mother for the extra socks. Your Brother James Rogers 4th U.S Infantry Company C, General Nathaniel Greene's Army" Also thank you all for the like and comment from the first one feel free to let me know what other units you would like James to write about. Also the letters are about what happen in the last episode.
The Master of the Seas- pt.2: John could just see the British navy blockading the Maryland port aboard Dolphin. Four ships-of-the-line of the Royal Navy had appeared seemingly out of nowhere to hinder the new nation's trade with the European powers. Luckily, the American Navy had been resting at a port in Virginia, so were able to react quickly. Turning to his brother, Thomas, he said, "There," and pointed to the enemy fleet. "Can you see them?" Thomas nodded grimly. After their first battle, it seemed as if John's brother had become more grave and serious, a stark contrast to the youthful, excited man he had been half a year ago. Then again, John thought to himself, we've all changed. Their first battle had not been an easy one. However, the battle seemed to take a heavier toll on his brother, maybe because he felt responsible for the deaths of nine of his crew. But this was no time to be sentimental. There was a battle coming, like it or not, and it would be no easier than the last. --- Actaeon, Congress, and Valiant led the charge against the British ships. Split into two columns, the American ships sandwiched the enemy fleet in between them. John saw Argyll, a 6th rate, being blasted to pieces as the American Navy advanced. When it was Dolphin's turn, the deck of the enemy ship had been cleared of its crew, and the hull had been completely destroyed. It also didn't help that the ship was going against the wind, so stood in the water like a sitting duck, waiting to be shot. Yet again, the screams of the wounded filled the air. John could smell the scent of death from Argyll and nearly vomited. The salty wind of the sea mixed with the smell of the dead would make any man do the same. In what seemed like a few minutes, the entirety of the enemy fleet had been destroyed. Sceptre was on fire and sinking, what remained of Argyll's crew had surrendered, and the massive warships of the American Navy were taking care of another ship that John could not make out. Dolphin's cannons were roaring at Amphion, a fifth rate. Admiral Barry had specifically ordered his captains to try and capture ships, not sink them. This was much easier said than done, for as Dolphin spit out chain and grape shot from her cannons, Amphion was responding in kind with cannon balls that ripped across the hull of Dolphin. Two men went down immediately as shrapnel from the cannon ball struck them in the chest. Thomas growled at the helmsman to turn to portside and get them out of there. John's heart was in his throat as he bellowed commands to the crew. Amphion's cannons were nearly reloaded, and another broadside to the stern would be devastating. The crew frantically tried to get Dolphin under way, but to no avail. All they could do now was brace for Amphion's broadside. Only it never came. Valiant had come over to support Dolphin and had fired a broadside of grapeshot onto the deck of Amphion. In a few moments, the crew had surrendered, and the battle was won. John looked across the deck of his crew. They all seemed tired and lifeless. He couldn't blame them, for they had all seen Death's face.
America's Eyes Part 4: Major Blackwood’s interview of the naval captain had lasted hours and he had written many pages of important information. Some of it would seem insignificant to any other officer who read it, yet it contained all information a man need to become Captain Oaken. A glass of untouched wine sat upon Blackwood’s desk as he read the information for what must have been the tenth time. It was a few days later before Blackwood was ready to use the information. A man sat before him, a man who had been vital in the war for independence. “I didn’t think would see you again sir.” “It has been a while Edwards, but war calls you once again. I need your help once more.” “What is it this time? A trip to Canada?” “England.” Blackwood said with a smile. “England sir?” Edwards said with a questioning look. “A few weeks ago, we captured the British fleet and a captain with it. With a few promises and threats he told me everything about the workings of the British navy. Everything and anything you can think of and before you ask everything about his own life. You are Captain Oaken.” “Sir, there is a slight problem. Wouldn’t it be noticed that this new Oaken has a slight colonies accent.” Edwards questioned. “Oaken was born and raised in the Americas. He was appointed Captain by a letter from the admiralty. And a letter is probably already on its way here summoning him to answer for his actions. You will sail to England on a traders’ vessel and head to the admiralty, it is highly likely you will remain there and be given a desk job. A prime place to feed us information on all British naval movements.” “How long do I have?” “As soon as the summons arrives you will leave. The same courrier system will be used as previously. A dead drop in the city and the message will be dispatched here. Follow the same procedures as before, if burnt escape immediately. There is one slight difference, a new book of code words which you need to learn as well as all the information. Any questions?” “No sir.” Edwards replied and held out his hand for the sheets of information. “You are dismissed.” Blackwood said. Edwards saluted and left. Just as Edwards left a knock came on Blackwood’s door. “Sir dispatches from the Iroquois front.” the messenger said. “Seems there is no rest for me today. Pass them over.” Blackwood reached out for the red ribbon wrapped letters.
Not sure if its been addressed, or even needs addressing at this point, but for interested parties, to keep your admiral from being the front ship, get your ships in the formation you want them to be, usually manually which can be a bit tedious, put your admiral in the desired location (I usually put him behind a double wall of ships in a line), then group them together in a control group. This will keep them in formation and your admiral safe until its down to the "Melee", which good luck at that point.
in the Naval engagement being shot "up the bum" as you so delicately put it is called raking fire, hence the classic naval maneuver of crossing the "T"
Addendum: also i cringed when i saw you trying to sail 1 of your lines between the enemy lines, this is potentially catastrophic as it would expose your line to broadsides from both enemy lines, thankfully you tacked to starboard
Now that was an excellent naval battle! When you just make sure that your ships can all hit the enemy instead of worrying about being fancy, things tend to go well. Obviously a fight against a more equal enemy might require more maneuvering, but this was a great beginning.
Well fought Captain LionHeart. I hereby promote you to Admiral. 3 cheers for Admiral LionHeart!! The terror of the seven seas! Hip hip huzzah!!! Hip hip huzzah!!! Hip hip Huzzah!!!!
I just imagine the American admiral looking through his scope at the enemy admiral's ship, only to see the other admiral doing the same but flipping him the bird, and the american admiral just easily enraged by this forcefully fires one of the front cannons near him at the enemy admiral.

There is a special Maryland infantry units you can recruit from Maryland as long as there is a fully upgraded military governors camp.
I'll admit to minor worry when I saw M & C in the title, but you carried it off nicely. To capture ships, they must be boarded to make sure, and there are other good tips below how to reorganize your battle line. Suggest running down routing ships, demasting, boarding and capturing, as the routers stop firing canon - grapeshot broadsides just before boarding reduce their ranks and reduce your casualties. Still have an issue, when you have the wind at your back or back quarter, the enemy stays aggressive and on the attack. Get closer, form line, sit and await their approach, demast with chainshot as long as possible, switch to either explosive or standard, if necessary until they're beat, switch to grape and finally board. I don't know if it is possible in TW-D to simultaneously board a targeted ship with two of yours, one of yours on either side, or if here one is under the various usual games restriction of single ship boarding actions. But, please do everything you can to keep the weather gauge and remain upwind of the enemy. Melee in mixed lines of ship battles reduces your efforts to focus them down. Always look for opportunity to straighten up and maintain focus fire.
Buy the constitution and put an admiral in it it’s the best thing I’ve seen When I got it my navy was away so I sailed it over alone and it got intersected by a first rate I danced around it got hit a couple of times but the Constitution is a tank a few rounds of chains and grape shots and a boarding action and I got the biggest ship in the fleet for the next three years
