    Lionheart's History of Russia: A One-Off
France has gone too far. Decades into the great French hysteria which has set Europe aflame, the revolutionary anarchists continue to refuse to back down. The excitable Latin crowds have made a demonstration before the world of the perils of giving any man the chance to grasp absolute power. Even the great Napoleon Bonaparte, chief among enlightened men, has been seduced by the tantalising prospect of dominion.
God knows it takes greatness to rule, a quality in which Europe is sorely lacking of late. Upon whom can we rely to stop the French threat? The mad King George of Britain? Charles of Spain, despised by his own people and ready to be supplanted by his son? Prussia’s Friedrich Wilhelm, a man so meek he takes orders from his wife? I think not. Even the Austrians appear lackadaisical in the face of this crisis. Are these the men with which we are to defend Europe’s monarchies? No. The old order is dead.
But in death comes rebirth. Opportunity, where there is loss. For Russia - marginalised, disregarded, unappreciated Russia, the death of the old order makes way for something better. Much belongs to the Romanovs, more than the Germans are willing to acknowledge: Poland, by rights an extension of our western border, was divided up unfairly to mollify better kings. Now Prussia sits upon lands they claim for the Germans, but the Junkers are as leaves upon an ocean of Slavs. Slavs in need of a homeland. Slavs in need of a liberator. If the Prussians and Austrians should prove themselves incapable of keeping the French at bay, who will protect the subjugated Slavs? And the infidel turks, who sully Christendom’s holy places with their ungodly ways - there is no power who would intervene to save them now, in the name of petty games of politics.
The experiments of enlightenment are over. Someone must step in to restore the balance, to return Europe to its natural order. The world needs greatness, now more than ever. They need a man who was born to rule, of good pedigree - they need a man who was not afraid to remove weakness, even his kin, from the throne for the good of the empire. The world needs a man untouched by the western madness, who will stop at nothing to do God’s will on earth.
The world needs Alexander. The world needs Russia.
“There’s been a change of plan.”
Field Marshal Kutuzov was practically murderous. You could tell because of the tone of his voice, light and almost friendly. The field marshal was the great bear’s great bear, a lumbering powerful mass of a man, too much of a mythological hero to be real. You didn’t have to believe the stories about Kutuzov to be in awe of the man; the wounds where he had been shot through the temple, twice, were testament to the fact that the man could not be killed. His blind scarred right eye, terrifying even in its sightlessness, fixed itself on Dmitry Dokhturov over the brim of a letter which he held in one tight meaty fist.
“Sir?” Dokhturov asked cautiously. The sounds of the camp beyond the tent filtered through the canvas in the brief silence that followed.
“The young tsar” Kutuzov rumbled with a hint of bitterness beginning to show itself in his voice “has seen fit to change our direction east.”
    Dokhturov cocked an eyebrow “East?”
“East.” Kutuzov’s mouth was working noiselessly, tasting the words for Tsar Alexander, the patricidal ruler he quietly disdained, that he might have used if he were alone “The tsar wishes us to abandon our allies to Napoleon in favour of some border dispute with the turks instead.”
Dokhturov acknowledged the news silently. What could one say? If the tsar wished it, there could be no question that it must be followed “Bennigsen is..”
“...No further west than Minsk, yes.” Kutuzov cut in “One would think that a man with his reputation could be trusted to see off whatever threat the Mohammedans might pose.”
    “Then… why, sir?”
Kutuzov grimaced “Tell the men outside that no-one is to enter, Dmitry. I don’t want this overheard.” The order given, Kutuzov discarded the letter onto the cluttered table between them “It is unwise to try too hard to understand the mind of our young tsar.” He grunted and stood, pressing his weight onto his knuckles clenched on the table “There could be any number of reasons; I half suspect that idiot Dolgorukov put this scheme into his head. What I fear is most likely, however, is this: I look too likely to succeed.”
    “Sir?”
“You are not to breathe a word of this so long as you live, do you understand me?” Once Dokhturov had given a hesitant nod, the field marshal continued “Alexander does not like me, and God knows he has not yet earned my respect. He has placed me in charge of a hastily assembled army which is to lead a fractious coalition against a French army which rumour has it is unbeatable. Horseshit, of course, but I tell you Dmitry the tsar has far too much respect for that bastard Napoleon. Oh I’m sure he’d be delighted if we pulled it off, and I have every confidence that we would have done, but more than that he would be ecstatic to have a reason to replace me with someone he likes more.”
Dokhturov didn’t know what to say to that. To cast such aspersions about the intentions of the tsar was unthinkable, and yet… Unbidden, his eyes found the map lying at the centre of the table and the Pratzen Heights that had been marked out. Kutuzov caught the direction of his glance and grunted.
“Put it out of your mind, Dokhturov. I know we would have crushed Bonaparte at Austerlitz, as sure as Swedes are swine. There will come another time, another battlefield, where we can put the French to flight. Who knows, it may even work out for the best - no reason to share the glory with the Austrians if we don’t have to, eh? Now get the others in here, I want preparations for our new Turkish campaign to begin immediately. God knows what we’ll tell the Austrians, maybe this is all a ploy to get the Prussians to get off their arses.” He chuckled to himself, and then seeing that Dokhturov was still standing there added “Well, what are you waiting for, a kiss on the cheek? Get on with it, I want to be in Constantinople for my birthday.”

    • @jamiengo2343

I do too! I think it gives extra emphasis on the smaller locations and makes them more unique, rather than having small province regions which you just stack with what you need. For example, in the UK in this game, there are a whole amount of smaller locations such as Portsmouth and Oxford which makes me just so happy, particularly being from Portsmouth. Idk, there’s something about it I suppose

  • @Nelsonwmj
    @Nelsonwmj 3 года назад

    Lionheart,
Firstly, CONGRATS AND WELL DONE for returning to Napoleon Total War with Darthmod and playing as the Russians. This was also the first faction I played as on my own, and with Darthmod enabled as well.
Quick tip: NTW cavalry CANNOT be left in combat with infantry, not even the melee Hussars. They're best used for cycle charging, especially the lancer Uhlans, and disrupting enemy formations and artillery. Watch out for their stamina as well, they do not last well in terms of energy if you run them halfway across the map before they engage with the enemy, and they take a long time to recover back to being fresh or at least active in a battle.
You haven't seen it happen yet so far, but once you go up against European powers like France, Prussia and potentially even Great Britain in future, you will see a lot of square formations happen. DO NOT ENGAGE them with cavalry, it is sheer suicide. Squares are your best friend in countering enemy cavalry flank charges, make sure you keep an eye on the bigger battlefield picture at all times. A well-timed triggering of "Form Square" can gut any cavalry unit that strays within firing or melee range.
Artillery is king in this game. Always try to have firepower superiority over your enemy whenever possible. Use and abuse canister shot to the hilt, and do whatever you can with your infantry formations to funnel enemy troops straight into the maw of your guns. Very important to remember this once you start going up against Napoleon's Grande Armee infantry columns which are by far the largest and densest in the game.

    Vladimir's Diary, part 1:
My father fought in a war. He was a captain who had seen action against Italian and French navies. Now, I continue on his legacy as a foot soldier moving towards Bucharest. My good friend Dimitri had already angered the Major.
We all have hopes of drinking vodka in Constantinople before the year was out. Anything else would be an unbearable let down. But for now, Major Abramov wants us ready. For should we succeed, the Persians will probably strike back with a vengeance.

Love this game so much thanks for the video. Please don’t forget about the trade nodes in the Black Sea. The easiest to get to from your Crimean trade port. You asked about the best Russian artillery. The unicorn is definitely up there for their big range but the howitzers and rockets are the most useful in my opinion. Anything where you can worry less about terrain and line of sight because they fire over your troops is a bonus cause sometimes the terrain just isn’t there and that can help cut down on friendly fire incidents. Also the rockets have the terror factor.

(I would love to submit a Unit named “Tachankas Finest)
    The Lords Beginning 1......
Another day, another time to be alive in the Motherlands glorious empire. Alexie “Tachanka” woke up in his small room as he quickly got up and dressed as he was within the city of Minsk . As he looked out his window as he put on his officer uniform of white and green and put on his side his saber, he would not have an easy day he knew.
Napoleon Bonaparte, new Emperor of France, was on the move and thus the Bear of Russia was stirring from its hibernation. But he also knew that his Motherland was in danger from the Ottomans to the South and old grudges with the Swedes from Carolus Rex certainly were a thing.
Alexei quickly got out of his room as his saber bounced against his leg and hip as he went to his current commander as he walked by other Russian officers having just woken up. He passed the halls of his military quarters full of candles and pictures of either officers or battles before he came to his commanders War Room and knocked for entrance.
“Come in.” Came a rough voice as Alexei headed in.
His commander looked at him with a cigar in one hand and papers in the other as Ivan Rigrobtriv looked at Alexei and said, “Alexei.... your new orders have come. We prepare war with the Ottomans...”
“The Ottomans? Have we finally had enough of their influences to our south?” Asked Alexei.
“Correct... we have substantial troops moving south to start taking the city of Iasi. But we need good leaders and since you’ve just gotten out of Officer School, I have secured you some new troops to lead.” Said Ivan.
Alexei saluted proudly before Ivan as he said, “When shall I go?”
“As soon as you can... the men will need officers like you to lead them.” Said Ivan.
“Then I shall prepare my bags!” Said Alexei and he smartly saluted again before he did an about face and left the room to begin prepping to leave for the new front.

Yes, Unicorn Guns are the artillery you want to work up to for the Russians. Russian Lifeguards are also quite good in melee, although I believe they are outclassed slightly by the guards of other major nations in a firefight.

Unit Suggestion: Rename the 11th Regiment of Foot Musketeers (their current name in-game) into the 11th Musketeers "The Old Stubborns" for their surprisingly solid fight in melee in your first battle against a decent melee unit.
Edit: It actually also got 300 kills, not bad from a basic Musketeer Regiment

2 tips for Napoleon TW. First off, militia give a garrison policing bonus, each militia gives +1 repression, so they're and easy way to keep happiness. I find also that it's well worth lowering taxes by 1 on both classes first turn. First off it makes it much easier to keep places happy. Even more importantly though, by turn 20+ it starts more than paying for itself. Lowering taxes increases the growth per turn of towns, making it so around turn 20-30 you're making more money from each town than you would by keeping taxes at the starting level.
