    Thanks for the video. One comment: On a screen with a resolution of 1920x1080 you don't have all that space available. For example, in power bi online you only have 1651x845 for the dashboard. The rest is for menus, toolbars and filters. So... maybe 1600x800 is ok for design.

    Very important topic. I believe this is equally important like learning DAX. At the end of the day, the intended users should be able to consume the reports without hassle. Also, I second with you point to set the aspect ratio at the very beginning which will definitely save a lot of effort later on.
    Thank you @Ruth for creating & sharing this with us. 😊👍❤

    Sometimes I need a bit more width than the default 1280 due to various slicers and visuals, but I want to keep the 16:9 ratio.
    This ratio can be maintained by simple division. If I need the width of my canvas to be 1408, I simply divide 1408 by 1280 (1.1). Then, multiply the height by this number: 720 X 1.1 (792). This becomes my custom canvas size of 792 height and 1408 width. These H and W settings maintain the 16:9 ratio.
    Of course, the same approach could be used to first determine the canvas height and apply the same division of the new canvas height by 720 and multiplying that result to determine the width to maintain 16:9 ratio.

    When I first started with PBI I didn't know this setting existed and I wondered why I couldn't fit anything on my report page. Some of the reports I created with my old company are still there, cramped pages struggling to fit visualisations on such a tiny canvas, so painful.
    An then I discovered the page setting, oh boy, what a game changer. This topic should be #1 lesson in every PBI beginner video.
    The sad thing is, when I see PBI reports that look cramped, the first thing I wonder about is "does that report creator know there's a canvas setting?" Sometimes I think there's a lot of people out there that don't even know about it.

    Thanks, really useful video. We've been having a problem where some users in power bi service get scroll bars on matrix viduals where there's not much space for columns. I'm assuming that'll be caused by this, so maybe we can fix it by playing with the aspect ratio or asking the end user who has the issue to change their resolution

    • @CurbalEN
      @CurbalEN  Месяц назад

      They probably wont be happy with other resolutions than those their screens are made for. If you have too many users with other resolutions you might want to design for them.

    So what size is the ideal ratio to fit in the PBI app window? This has been driving us mad for a few years! 16:9 gives horrible white space columns in the app! Thx

    • @creyres
      @creyres 6 дней назад

      I second this. If you hide the vertical nav bar the dimensions are different. The comment below says 1651x845 or round to 1600 x 800 (2:1). I might go up a size to HD+ (1600x900) for user that have a 1920x1080 screen size. Hopefully minimize white space on the left and right side. I do like the idea of 2x screen resolutions for the same report (make a bookmark to a different page with the same content).

  • @cathrerinezetadrones3169
    @cathrerinezetadrones3169 Месяц назад

    What are your options on setting these up as 2k or 4K? We tend to show these on large screen and I think this help the design because we can fit more values on the page and use larger fonts. Their Old school excel charts are usually cluttered but they are use to seeing more bars in bar charts

    • @CurbalEN
      @CurbalEN  Месяц назад +1

      If your screen resolutions are go 4k go big! , but be careful as someone opening it up on a normal resolution size will see everything small. Maybe 2 versions?

  • @Fray789
    @Fray789 Месяц назад

    Get video, but it is possible to add a scrollbar to your reports. After you upload it to pbi online, open the report, edit mode, click view in the top ribbon and set it to fit to with. if you have set you high before to larger than screen size a scrollbar will appear

    This is where loading specific arrangements of objects based on the destination device comes in handy. This can be done in CSS but means being able to move/resize visual/fonts based on resolutions. I did this in Design Studio (business objects) long ago.. a pain to build out and test, but you can 'change' the report as needed during load on the device. Likewise orientation on phones/tablets/rotatable monitors.

    The visible part of the canvas (excluding toolbars and panels) is the reference, _not_ the screen’s aspect ratio. Further, setting the pixel width and height to other than the screens pixel size will probably result in different levels of magnification (affecting text size). Right?

    • @CurbalEN
      @CurbalEN  Месяц назад

      The resolution of your screen as well as the aspect ratio will determine how things are displayed on your screen. Based on that you can design your reports accordingly. Try with different screens to see how that works.

    I always struggle with this. I work in a large nonprofit health system with screen sizes that vary wildly. The standard unchanged setting is pretty useless in terms of what you can fit, but I struggle to pick a 'standard' for higher resolutions. Invariably I will work with a stake holder who wants to fit as much as possible for what they view, but then once they share it with others we start getting complaints because of all the varying screen size. Don't really know what the 'right' answer it, but thanks for vid!

    I did a lot of testing at my last company and came up with a custom size of 1775x800. It gave me the most real estate while still displaying correctly on the most screens. My current company built everything with the standard size of 1280x720 😥

    • @CurbalEN
      @CurbalEN  Месяц назад

      Yea,… this is not a setting people usually change. Huge pain to change unless you use the json file as a template and that will probably mess things up :(

  • @kaidobor1
    @kaidobor1 Месяц назад

    8 size limit to font is really a problem. I'd like to see 7 as option. Possible to overcome with setting it in style json file, if you are adventurous. One more aspect to consider though. People seldom look at report full screen without toolbars, taskbars, or sidebars, as in Power BI report or app in broweser or in desktop app. Some space is to be left for those as well. This is likely a reason the default is with 16:9 with 720p.

    • @CurbalEN
      @CurbalEN  Месяц назад

      Yeah, they have to pick something… Maybe 1280x1080 is a good middle ground but designing anything on it is a pain :(
