    I completely agree with your opinion on power bi service being so intricate and cumbersome for business users, i do not however see this as a big improvement, maybe for occasional users that might need access to a report once in a while, but for distribution for me, the apps are still the way to go.
    Love you videos by the way, no nonsense, short and to the point. Thanks!

    • @CurbalEN

      I am seeing this as opening an excel file in sharepoint or wherever it is at, without the need to install anything.
      What i am not saying is that power bi standardise reports should be distributed this way. A BI platform made for business users should be the way to do that.
      Hopefully it makes sense :)

    I just tried this, works well. One observation though - the data is as at the time of the last refresh & I can see no mechanism to initiate a refresh. So to be useful, there needs to be a process around that. Might be perfect for historic snapshot scenarios.

    Big companies tend to have an E5 licence that includes PBI this allows access to the service and also allows users to build their own reports and share them. Admin can give E5 users access to workspaces and datasets to build reports.
    I wonder if E5 licence allows you to share in Sharepoint and one drive.
    Thanks for the updates 😀

    That's why you get a premium capacity or now fabric and setup an app for the workspaces, then use audiences for different access. Then the end users just have 1 url to go to the app which has all the reports they need access to.

    • @CurbalEN
      @CurbalEN  Месяц назад +1

      Not all reports need to be distributed to wide audience. Treating a Power BI file as any office file is the way to go imo

    I assume this only works for Import-mode reports where all data resides in the PBIX file?
    Not sure I like this idea since it will be harder to govern what reports and report-versions exists in the company now.

    I'll experiment with this. So far no joy, but it may not be in our region yet. PPU should be ok for access. The main thing will be if it can work with thin reports. It's early days though and often these features come out through the Pro and PPU before hitting capacity.

    There's a caching issue in PowerBI and SharePoint. For example, after editing a file in SharePoint and saving it, my colleague makes additional changes online. When I reopen the file, despite seeing their changes in SharePoint, sometimes it only shows the version I saved previously. However, downloading the file gives me the updated version

    • @CurbalEN

      @@CurbalEN I guess there is some use for it. It does not hurt. But in my org everyone got used to current offering. There are just so many ways to make the report available. If someone cannot use PBI site or PBI app or Android app or Teams tab, then I don't know :D They probably will not understand the report anyway

  • @yeyoremix
    @yeyoremix Месяц назад

    My points of view on this:
    This adds an extra layer of risk to permission management. As people who shouldn't be accesing data from a report that is saved in a shared location could access it now by just opening the report. Although that risk existed before, except now it's increased to users who don't have PBI Desktop installed. The big question is, can external users access it as well if they are invited to a shared location that holds one of this pbix files?
    I never saw PBI services as an user environment, I always thought it was a developer one. And distribution was always meant to be done trough embedded reports or links you can embed on sharepoint. Maybe Microsoft is not clear explaining this to users but tha'ts the feeling I get from how the product is designed.
    Anyways, this will be great to share adhoc reports that you are not sharing as a published report and should help keep workspaces cleaner. I can see why you are excited!

    • @CurbalEN
      @CurbalEN  Месяц назад +1

      You need read permissions to view the report , so you should be ok!
      Power bi service is meant to be the way to distribute files, hopefully they will reconsider this!
      And yes! That is one of the reasons why i am excited :)
