My hot water heater went out and turned the water off to it and started hearing a whistling sound. Everyone I asked didn't know what it was and my son in laws advice didn't work. After watching this video I opened the lid on the toilet and the noise was there. I messed with the top of the flush thing and that stopped the noise. Need to replace it but I can do that. We suffered with that whistling for at least 2 months. Your advice was spot on, I cannot thank you enough!

You don’t need an hour lecture on this. Turn off the main water source. Turn on all the faucets in your house. Wait for 5 minutes to release the air trapped. Then turn off all the faucets. Turn the water back slowly until the desired pressure. It’s fixed. THAT SIMPLE.

Not to come off like a smart ass but I'm curious why set out to watch videos on something your knowledgeable at? Why not make a video? Some people go in depth so people understand what's going on not just how to fix it. I can change a light bulb but I find it amazing to see the process of making and how they work.

If it's trapped air what would cause it not to bleed out while water is being used? Is it the (0) atom from the water replenishing the air back into the lines? What if anything pushes out the excess air when the water is turned off or only allows air out not in . At that point the air is stagnant. Do I need to treat the lines afterwards? Also my desired pressure is a lot. So what would you recommend to do and what happens if I tried exactly what you explained numerous times and still get the same outcome? Is there a time for certain square footage of a home or quantity of faucets? Do I allow longer time to allow the air to escape? I have questions I need answers and seeing as you are clearly the professional here please tell me or even better make a how to video please and thank you..

Do not make a hammer arrester the way he said. The air in the new branch will get absorbed by the water over time. The new branch will become full of water so the hammer arrester effect will go away and the new capped off branch will be full of stagnant water.

.A new faucet (a dual spray switch tap that allows to switch between a strong shower setting, and normal stream setting) is installed downstairs. Whenever the downstair neighbor switches to strong flow setting I hear a high pitched water stream noise in my kitchen. The below neighbor uses the high flow setting quite often in the day, and it affects my ears as I have an ear condition called tinnitus. But it's loud enough that even someone without tinnitus would find it annoying (the nails against chalkboard type of sound)..why the noise is coming,

It sounds like the pipe is expanding from the hot water entering it. It could be that the supports are too tight and don't let the pipe expand in diameter and in length. I've had some success in making the openings around the pipe a little bigger or using a tough non-metallic pad (maybe a resilient tough rubber) between the pipe and its supports. Hope it helps.

I have a whistle that just started the week I replaced a kitchen sink faucet and a 1/4-turn ball valve supply feed under the sink. What is puzzling is that the whistle seems to always be in one spot right behind the bathroom sink no matter which plumbing fixtures are in use. My washing machine running causes the noise, the kitchen sink (hot and cold), my bathroom sink and shower, and the 2nd bathroom's toilet. My toilet doesn't cause it and neither does the 2nd bathroom sink as well as a cold water feed line off my washing machine's cold water spigot that goes to my fridge. Flummoxed.

Take Pipe Wrencher's advice and install a baffle of sorts, such as the homemade/manufactured Hammer Arrester on the hot water supply. If it only occurs with one fixture and the with the hot water supply itself, it may be the valve supplying that fixture. Moen, Delta and other reputable suppliers will give you a free cartridge for their products. It's worth taking this route before opening a wall to install an arrestor. Good luck!

When the water softener by pass is on, we loose water pressure in our house. When the by pass is off, we have full water pressure in our house.
However, when we turn on the water in the house we hear some loud noises. Seems like the noise come from the pipes from the water softener to the house.

I don't think that hammer arrestor resolves your problem, most probably your issue is combination of things, you need to check or even replace a couple of things to get rid of the problem. You need to inspect toilet filler valve, toilet shut off valve, the tap's cartridge and shut off valves. There is hight chance that your problem is related to faucet cartridge.

I hear a knocking sound every day for the past few weeks at around 4:30 or 5 AM. The sound comes from right outside my bedroom, which makes me nervous because the water heater for the house is directly below my bedroom. The odd thing is that I don't think it is water hammer - the sound is more like a loud woodpecker than a single knock and lasts a few seconds. It also happens in the morning before I use any of my water. What might be the cause of this?

The problem with ur solution is that sooner or later the water absorbs the air and the problem restarts. The second is bacterial growth possibly legionella.

How many units in the building? and when exactly the noise starts (when someone uses a tap? or when someone flush a toilet? and which unit you think the sound comes from?) you need a local experienced plumber to be onsite and see where the sound is coming from!
