    I have searched high and low on RUclips to find information that might help me find the cause of a clunking sound you so accurately described in #6 in your plumbing noise causes. Every time I turned on a faucet in my home there was an immediate clunk sound in the water pipes. After finding your post I replaced the pressure balance valve as you recommended on my shower valve and the clucking sound was gone! HALLELUJAH!! I wanted to " THANK YOU" for sharing your experience and knowledge with us out here that are far less informed on these matters. Thanks again!

      There's many cases where some factory miles away caused this sound. There's a famous case of some tire or glass factory in in the north east had a machine that caused an entire town to have a hum and they only found out 25 years later, the day the plant shut down. Turning your master breaker off is a good start things like refrigerators have humming compressors.

    During a bathroom remodel, our other bathroom shower started to make a banging noise coming from inside the wall where the shower valve is. It only happens if we have the valve set to both cold & hot (to make it warm). If we turn it all the way to hot or cold, it stops. My thought was, as the contractors were turning off & on the main water valve to work on the other bathroom, they turned on the water to quick and it ruptured something in the valve. They said it's just air in the pipes and it will go away the more we use the other shower, but I think the valve got messed up. Thoughts?

    I have a stationary whistle in the wall by my bath 1 sink. Using the washer out in the garage, the kitchen faucet, the toilet in bath 2 and the tub/shower in bath 1 produces the whistle. The toilet in bath 1, and the sink in bath 2 does not produce the whistle. It began a couple months ago when I replaced my kitchen faucet and a 1/4 turn valve under the sink (cold side). It does it on both cold and hot sides of the various fixtures. Any guidance is appreciated. My handyman brother is all ???

    Thanks for doing a video that actually makes sense to the layfolk! You didn't seem to mention a low humming I'm getting at home when I turn on water upstairs and downstairs(hot and cold). • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  Год назад

      TheAKK, if you have an RO system you could have a hole in the storage tank bladder. That can make a humming sound. If you have an expansion tank on the water heater or a well tank, those bladders can go bad and make a noise. If you have a pressure regulator on the house, they make noise when they go bad. If you have a boiler system, they also have expansion tanks. That could make a noise if heating your water. I don’t think it could be the faucets if you’re getting the noise both upstairs and downstairs.

    At times, plumbing in one washroom will squeal loudly (like a smoke alarm). This will happen only sometimes when water is running somewhere in the house. Originally sound was coming from one faucet when water turned on anywhere in house. Had cartridge changed and a few other things on that faucet (by a plumber). It still makes the sound (at times)...now I noticed the sound comes from the toilet area of the same washroom! I don't hear it from the faucet lately, just the toilet (at times). Is something moving through the pipe and stuck? I live in an area with hard water. When plumber changed cartridge, he also changed water pressure regulator valve as it had build up and might have had a slight leak. Thank you for your helpful videos and advice.

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  Год назад +1

      Mimi Combow, turn the shut off valve on the toilet off and see if the sound goes away. Try this for about a day. If the sound stops, it’s either the fill valve or the shut off valve to the toilet making the sound. If that’s not it, do the same on the lav faucet and see if the noise is gone. Angle stops are notorious for making noise but are seldom checked. If you have the older style compression angle stops that you have to turn off, there is a washer in them that can get loose and make a noise. I’m thinking it’s the fill valve on the toilet.

    Hello, we just moved into a 1973 mobile home and the water heater location is in the bathroom and it is a very small water heater. There is a noise under the bathroom vanity area, to me it sounds like "loud white noise" .We have looked under sink, looked for leaks but can't find anything. It is a Florida home with well water that I think 5 houses is using, the pump and everything is behind our house. We turn off water to our house and the water heater breaker when we leave and the noise is still there but we don't drain the lines. We have water sprinklers too but they are turned off. We did notice that the big tank outside has a rust spot on the bottom and is leaking some. We are going to call a plumber to come check it out but I am wondering if it has something to do with the pump and the tank outside. There was a pressure gauge on the big tank outside and it was at 20. If it is an outside issue then our HOA has to get it fixed. My husband is going to crawl around and check out the water heater from the outside. Any advice? Thanks!

    Greetings, been watching your videos all morning....pretty sure i've narrowed down the hammering noise throughout the house to my gas water heater manufactured 01/2005. I never knew about flushing the system so that's never been done. It sounds like, due to it's age, that is not the thing I need to do. As you've suggested, I will be looking for a certified plumber to install a new heater if needed (no "box stores").. Wish me luck and thanks for the advice!

Also... when I have the water turned on, it also "spits" at times...? I went downstairs into my basement ((where the water pipes are at while the water is *TURNED OFF*)), and I'm hearing water running through them quite loudly too, but I don't see any leakage or anything like that...?

    Great format and demeanor! What are the sounds associated with inadequate or blocked venting? As part of remodeling, I disconnected the vent stack and attempted to compensate for the loss of venting through use of an air admittance valve. Subsequently toilet flushing, laundry or other rapid draining results in an obnoxious belching noise from that general area. I'm wondering if the AAV is too small, and am hearing the pipes rattle from pressure as the system draws in air beyond the capacity of the AAV. After a handful of seconds, the sound goes away, crickets. Thanks.-JH.

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  2 месяца назад

      When a vent is not working, you’ll get a gurgling sound. When you flush a toilet, you’ll get a sound from a lav or tub drain because it sucks the trap dry to get air. You might have bought a cheap mechanical vent that might not be working properly. Hopefully, you have access to this vent. I recommend a studor vent that comes in at 1 1/2”, 2”, 3” and 4”. Rule of thumb…. When using a 3” drain, you can use a 1 1/2” vent.

    Enjoyed your video. Hoping you may be able to w. There is a very loud thunking noise after water has drained the house and is heading to the septic tank. Depending on how much water is being used there could be more or less thunks. 1.6 gallon flush 2-3 thunks. Washer draining 3-4 thunks. 10 minutes shower continuous thunks about 15-20 seconds apart. Any ideas? Thank you.

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  Год назад

      @aliciasmith4255, do you have a sewer ejector pump? It might be that the check valve is making the noise. When the pump is done pumping and turns off, the check valve closes hard, causing the thunking noise. You might need to repipe the pipe to the septic to eliminate the down pressure on the check valve.

Also I asked worker to check the roof, they don’t find anything wrong. My kitchen appliances function well. What do you think makes the noise? It’s annoying and disturb my sleep. Thanks!

      Candy Li, here is a list of things to check out the noise: if you have a water well, do you have an expansion tank? Do you have an expansion tank on your water heater? If you have an RO drinking system, the expansion tank can make noise. Do you have a circulating pump on the water heater? When expansion tanks are going bad, they can make a moaning sound. But, you usually hear the noise during the day, not at night.

    We have city water sir and noticed low pressure from our bathroom faucet(cleaned the aerator) and thought we fixed the problem. Then the washing machine valve quit having water come out on the cold side the same day. And now the bathroom faucet won’t have water more than drips coming out. Any ideas on where to begin looking or what to troubleshoot? Thanks

      There are screens on the hose or washing machine connections that need to be cleaned or changed. Clean the faucet aerator again and it will probably work. If you turn the water off to the house or any valve connected to the house, turn the valves back on slowly.

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber

      arnulfo delgadillo, is it the hot or cold water that is coming in brown? If it’s the hot water, I would recommend draining the heater and flushing and refilling it. As your house was built in 1974, they might have used galvanized pipe nipples on the tub spout instead of brass nipples. They probably used galvanized nipples on the bathroom sink angle stops. Go in and change the nipples to brass. You shouldn’t have to repipe the house.

      gw Little, I don’t know what a show line is but whatever you hooked the Pex up to, is it a compression valve? That means, does it have a washer in whatever you attached the Pex to. If it’s a new shower valve, it’s probably a pressure balance valve. If the valve does not have equal pressure on both hot and cold sides, it will make a chattering sound. I don’t think the Pex is the problem. It could be whatever you connected it to. I hope you can give me more information.

    Great video, thanks. I have a rhythmic vibration heard throughout the house (about one cycle every second) when outdoor irrigation lines are running- when the sprinklers are on, but not just a drip line. Doesn’t happen with showers or sinks or the hose. It also happened yesterday when I slowly turned back on the main water supply valve to the house after repairing a broken pvc sprinkler line: if I turned the main valve too fast, it began the vibration, but if I slowed down, it dissipated. I tested my water pressure at the nearest hose to the main supply and it was 70psi.
    I’m concerned my 1979 copper lines have mineral buildup and need to be replaced? Any ideas?

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  Год назад

      Jordan Larson, it sounds like you have a loose washer in your supply valve or one of the sprinkler valves. The only supply valve with a washer in it is a globe valve or a hose bib. I recommend replacing either one of those and use a ball valve. The sprinkler valves have a large washer and usually you can just replace the valve. It’s not your copper pipe. The pressure on your regulator is not too high. Valves that have washers in them have a screw that can get loose, causing the washer to vibrate.

Underneath the kitchen sink there is a white tank looks like the one you show here, and there are water filters, but when I didn't hear any sounds under the sink though, the sound is heard up on the corner wall by the cabinet, but there is no water pipe up 5 feet high on the wall. • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  2 месяца назад

      You could have a bad RO tank. If you can lift the tank easily, then it’s fine but if it is very heavy to lift, then the tank has gone bad and needs to be replaced. Another thing….if the RO drain is connected between the basket strainer and the p- trap, it makes a water running noise. The easiest way to fix that is to connect the drain on the outlet arm of the p- trap. The water in the p-trap will silence the noise. You hear that noise when the RO is making drinking water.

      It’s probably the bladder in the water tank that is going bad. They can make any kind of sound when they go bad. If there is a snifter valve on top of the water tank, push the needle down and if air and water come out together, it means the bladder is going bad. Or, if your pump goes on and off frequently, that might mean the bladder is bad.

      IAMGiftbearer, to check the toilets to make sure they are not leaking, put a couple of drops of food coloring in the tank. Make sure no one flushes the toilets for at least an hour. In about 30-45 minutes, check to see if the bowl water is the color of the food coloring. If it is, that means the flush valve is leaking. That’s the part in the tank that has the flapper. Buy a new flapper that is manufactured by the toilet. Do you have a water softener? If you do, it might be caught in one of the regeneration settings. If you have a basement or crawl space, check if there is any water leaking. If you have an air conditioner or a swamp cooler, the noise might be coming from that. Check these ideas out.

      Do you have an expansion tank on the water heater? A bladder in the tank could have a hole in it, making that sound. Sometimes if you have corrugated water supply lines, that could be making the noise. If you do, just adjust them by moving them around. It could be a pipe in the wall that is touching some wood. Not much of a fix for that as you need to open the wall. See if any of these ideas help.

      Sean Wong, I need more information as noises can come from any faucet or toilet or even an expansion tank if you have one in the house. Do you mean the lav faucet? The first thing I would do is remove the aerator and see if that does anything. The noise could even be coming from the fill valve in the toilet. A squealing sound often indicates a bladder with a hole in it on the expansion tank. I would also check the water pressure at the water heater before you use the faucet. You might be getting thermal expansion when the heater heats up. In that case, you would need to add an expansion tank on the cold water inlet side of the water heater. I gave you some homework so check these ideas out.

      Doesn’t sound like this particular bathroom gets a lot of use. I say this because the trap seal on the drain of the tub has probably gone dry from lack of use. You can turn the tub faucet on, run water for 30 seconds or less, and that will fill the trap back up. You can do this once a month or less or, if you don’t use this bathroom at all, pour 2 cups of RV antifreeze in the drain because RV antifreeze does not evaporate. I believe this will solve your problem.

The only time it’s hard to replace is when they didn’t allow enough room to get it in and out. A way to check this is to disconnect one of the unions and see how much play you have.

It’s driving me nuts at night and I don’t know where it can be coming from. I don’t think it’s my unit as the it seems like it’s a bit further away. Any thoughts?

      Karen, does the irrigation run at night? Is there a water softener or whole house filter system in your building? Water softeners run every few days and a filter system can be set to run every day. Ask questions about these ideas.

      I’ve never heard of that. One thing you might try is adding a #5 (2 1/2 gallon) expansion tank on the cold water side. Add it at the cold water service valve at the hose bib drain using a 3/4” water flex. Any location would work on the cold water feed. That would probably be the easiest and cheapest way to go. No more than $100 in parts. Opening walls gets expensive.

      You may be getting expansion on the hot water lines because they are touching wood. It’s not going to leak and too costly to fix the problem.

    Question...
    We had plumbers come out, they worked on a leak above the ceiling in our master bedroom.
    On the day they were finally down with the project, a loud vibrating/humming sound came about after they turned the water back on. The sound has now been on going for two days. We called them and they came out. They shut the water off the noise went away. 45 minutes later the noise came back.
    Any ideas as to what it could be?
    One guy said maybe they turned on the water too fast? Another one said it might coming from a leak in the boiler room?

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  2 года назад

      Rebeca Andrade, do you have an expansion tank on the water heater? When the bladder goes bad, they can making a squealing sound. You might have debris in your tub and shower valves. You might have to change the cartridges. You can isolate the sound by turning off the angle stops at the fixtures. Turn one angle stop on at a time and keep going until you hear the sound. That might tell you which fixture is making the sound.

      You mean you turn off the water supply to the toilet? If it is, change the fill valve in the toilet tank. If you are on a pressure regulator, check your incoming pressure. Best spot to do that is on the drain of the water heater. There should be no more than 60 pounds of pressure on the house side of the pressure regulator.

    After changing the valve in the kitchen, we started hearing noises in the bathroom wall between the toilet and the shower. Coincidentally, a few days later, also change the valve in the shower. The noise happens after using the shower and also flushing the toilet. It is a vibrating, banging noise like the pipe, vibrating against the wall, repetitively almost like as if you had pressed the spring on a door stopper. What do we do to fix? I can send a recording.

      @TheGrumpyPlumber  2 месяца назад

      If you have an angle stop on the toilet that is a compression valve, the washer might be loose inside it. Just replace it. If you put in a pressure balance shower valve, you might have a bad cartridge, even if it’s brand new. Replace the cartridge. You may have old globe valves on the hot and cold shower supplies that have washers inside that became loose. It would be wise to replace the hot and cold shut off valves. Hopefully you can find the problem.

      @testt4548, first thing I would do is turn off the angle stops to find out what fixture is making the noise. I could almost guarantee that it’s a washer in an angle stop that is causing the noise.

I installed 2 Water Hammer Arrestor on the cold and hot water valve for washing machine, it didn’t resolve the issue. Please help if possible. Thanks

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  Год назад

      @seangholipour3884, first thing you should do is turn off the toilet angle stops and the hot and cold angle stops on the lav faucets. Then turn the faucet on and off quickly at the tub and see if that stops the noise. If the noise stops, turn one angle stop one at a time and then turn the tub faucet on and off and see which angle stop is bad. If that’s not the problem, then it could be the pressure balance shower valve that needs to be repaired. It could be a bad balancing spool in the shower cartridge that could be bad.

    What’s the cause of a loud humming sound in wall behind sink pipes?

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  4 месяца назад +1

      I don’t know the cause but, if you have flexible aluminum connections on the water heater, you might try to straighten them or turn them. There might be a sink faucet or toilet making the noise. You really didn’t give me much information to go by. Do some investigating on your own.

    In my townhouse, several times throughout the day, we'll hear loud thuds. Not knocking, clunking, or ticking. It sounds like when those guys that deadlift 200+ pounds drops the weight on the floor and the whole gym can hear it. We've been dealing with this noise for a year now but neither us nor the neighbor is doing anything to cause it. Sounds like it's behind the wall by the bathroom upstairs. Any thoughts?

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  7 месяцев назад

      Do you have expansion tanks on your water heaters? They can make that noise when they go bad. Back in the 90’s all the shower valves had to be pressure balance. The valves have a piston and they can make a noise, like when you flush a toilet or the irrigation goes on. Any change in water pressure can cause the valve to make a noise. You need to have new cartridges installed if that is the problem.

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  Год назад

      Roger Lampton, you’re having a problem with the diverter for the hand sprayer. You have to remove the spout to find the diverter which is located in the body of the valve. If this is a $100 faucet, it’s not worth repairing and you probably can’t find the part. If it’s a Delta or a Moen, you can get the part. If it’s a very expensive high end kitchen faucet, you can also get the part by calling the manufacturer.

I just moved into this house a couple of months ago and I have not been into the attic to see if that pipe is fasten down. Is there anything that I can do it stop the hammer knock? Thank you for your time.

      Edward Bodell, first thing I would check is to make sure the expansion tank is good on the boiler. Then I would check the piping to make sure all the exposed piping is strapped well. Use plastic grommet straps.

    We have a 1973 house with copper pipes and the water supplied by a well and pump, and the previous owners did not have a sand filter on the pump.
    Soooo the pipes have a little bit of sand in them. How do I know the bathroom toilet tank had about an half of a inch of sand in the tank.
    But we replaced everything in that bathroom including the shower valve about two years ago. Just last night the wife was taking a shower in there, and the pipes started banging Constantly like a water hammer it didn’t stop until I went in there and opened up the sink valve and then it stopped. It definitely was coming from the shower.
    What could it be?
    Thank you.

      You’re having a problem with the pressure balance valve. You need to replace the cartridge. It could be a problem with the angle stop on the toilet too if it has a compression stem.
