For my 2003 Honda Accord all I do is make sure ANY antifreeze/coolant I buy states it is Non-Silicate because in my owners manual that is all that is required but most will state Silicate and Barates Free. I've used Peak Global Lifetime exclusively and my Accord now has 257,000 miles, radiator is fine, and it still has the original upper and lower radiator hoses. I did just change the thermostat and for no other reason other than I was bored that day.

So glad that I came to you video before I went to Wal-Mart. I'm smelling auto freeze and wasn't sure if I had to use Honda's product or not. I never got the owners book with my used crv so I wasn't sure. I just called my local Honda dealer and it's $20. I will be glad to pay extra if it's gonna protect my system. Thanks for sharing this information.

I just changed coolant in my 1500 Wing. I went online to O'reilly auto parts and pulled up the veh listing which lists the product that is designed for your vehicle. I was very surprised when with all the coolants listed only two were recommended for my Wing. One was a Zerex and the other was Prestone Command which is HD coolant and is purple just like the Honda coolant.

Honda Type 2 coolant is essential. I had my water pump and timing belt replaced in my Acura, the mechanic drained my coolant out in order to perform the work but put non manufacturers green stuff back in to my radiator which I thought wasn't big deal, 8 months later, one pipe in my coolant system started to leak. So, I went to dealership to flush out the green coolant and put the manufacturer blue one in, I observed the blue coolant coming out from the leaking spot starts to crystallize, and magically, the crystallized coolant actually stops the leak by itself, so I concluded not only the Type 2 anti freeze coolant inhibits corrosion, it also repairs minor leak. So, for Honda and Acura cars, I definitely recommend using the manufacturer's coolant.

I switched to Peak 50/50 for many years and do a flush every 3 years or 36,000 miles on my 2001 Honda Civic with now 206,000 miles. No issues whatsoever.
I also contacted Preston and Peak in order to make sure that I can do the switch and they said no problems.
I also have a Volvo and started to use Peak, no issues as well.
As far as you flush your cooling system on a regular basis, you should be fine.
Now Peak and Preston are OAT coolants and they don't mix with certain orange coolants very well (google coolant sludge) but they work well with OAT and HOAT.
I have never seen a radiator cap destroyed like this, pretty sure the coolant is not at fault, more likely the cap itself or you got a knock off OEM?
Either way, if you take care of your car, it'll take care of you.

The problem I have with Honda Type 2 Coolant is that it is only available pre mixed. Even if you remove the thermostat you cant get the old coolant out from around the block, unless you strip the chain down and remove the water pump. That means when you do a coolant change you cant do a back flush of the block as adding pre mixed coolant to fresh water only results in further diluted coolant, same goes for not back flushing, you are only adding new coolant to old worn out coolant. If you are using concentrate you can back flush the block then knowing the total capacity of the coolant system add 50% that volume of concentrate then top up with fresh water. .

I used the pentofrost a3 fluid from a nearby store because it was an emergency and I didn't want to risk overheating trying to get to and back from the dealer .. it claims it's ok for '1990 and newer hondas' .. so hopefully it works well and doesn't cause any leaks/damage .. any others who use pentofrost ?

One man's opinion. The radiator cap on the left came from a car that had not changed their coolant in over five years. My bet the coolant was brown and had water added to the system at some point. The cap on the right the vehicle had the coolant changed at least once over a five year period. I would bet on maintenance over type of coolant. The old standard was every three years. Wally world coolant will work just fine if you keep those standards.

Makes sense to use the name brand especially to protect any warranties. That said, I think we all know Honda doesn’t operate chemical plants and oil refineries. Other companies make the fluids for them. So some of the stuff is made to Honda specs and carries the Honda branding. Other stuff many also be made to Honda specs but NOT carry the branding and be sold for a lower price. The only way to know really is to find out who makes Honda’s brand name fluids and what they label the Honda stuff that isn’t paid to be name branded.

As someone who has worked in this industry before I can say a lot more goes into making the OEM finished product vs the budget friendly one.
The OEM product will control the PH levels, include additives as you mentioned, use de-ionized water or other methods of filtering the water, etc.
Take windshield washer fluid for example. (only an example here) Rain-X all season washer fluid is more expensive for the same reasons above where as the blue cheap antifreeze that everyone sells for 99 cents is actually pretty corrosive due to the PH levels.
Have you ever noticed the cars where the paint is destroyed over the windshield? Also it's more than likely that it's starting to rust there?
Most of time it's prolonged use of these cheap washer fluids that eat away at the cars clear coat and paint.
Finally, it gets under the paint and the elements will just chip away at it.
All that being said, please know that Honda, Chevrolet, Ford, Toyota, etc. are more than likely not making their own fluids. They typically have some other company making the product for them and to their desired specs.
So in closing OEM products are usually the safe bet since your vehicle is designed to use the formulation. Peak, Prestone and similar would also be a good choice but beware the companies who claim to make a product just as good for a fraction of the cost; they are cutting corners somewhere so they can increase their profits and gain market share.

As of today 7/8/22, Honda coolant is around $27 a gallon for 50/50. Peak coolant for Asian cars is $24 for concentrate or $17 for 50/50. With the Peak concentrate I can mix up two gallons at $12 a gallon vs $54 for two gallons of the Honda coolant. Is the Honda coolant that much better? Plus, if I do a water flush, I will need a third gallon of the Honda coolant because the 50/50 would be way to diluted. It would be nice if Honda would put out a concentrate. Just seems like a lot of money for half water when I can get a gallon of distilled water for $1.

@@matthewbeaver5026 I have no objections to what he and you claimed. On the contrary I am on your side. It just does not make sense when somebody compares different measures. $24 for a gallon of concentrate which makes 2 gallons of 50/50 vs $54 for 2 gallons of premix 50/50. easy, does not require any calculation.
Back on the subject. It takes quite some work for a brand to become reliable, and they are sure to benefit it. But charging double the amount is just plain gouging. Premixed coolant is a terrible idea. You have to pay for 2 plastic containers which are now days more expensive then what they contain (1/2 gallons of water each). If a person cannot mix half distilled water and half coolant, then they should just take it to a shop to have it done.
I had a friend who had Tefal iron with a pressurized steam tank. It would give " no water in the tank error" and would not run. I found that one of the thermal switches on the heating element was bad. I asked the service about it. They said they cannot change just the switch but the whole heating block and 2 switches on it. Cost? 1000TL. They used a plug to plug the wire on one side of the switch but they welded the output wire directly to the other end of the switch whose both ends were plugable. I found the switch in italy and ordered it for 80Tl plus shipping and import taxes to a total of 134TL. I cut the welded side and crimped a plug to it. Put the switch in and plugged the wires on. If They had the switch in my country I could have fixed it maybe for 50TL. The system is created such a way that so much have to be wasted and you have to pay more so they can profit more.

That is for motorcycles. This is service info for a 2017 Honda Accord:
"Always use Honda Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 or Honda Extreme Cold Weather Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2. Using a non-Honda coolant can result in corrosion, causing the cooling system to malfunction or fail."
