Honda Cooling System Service/Fluid Change

  • In this video, I show you how I service the cooling system on a Honda. In this case I am doing a drain and fill on an 2.4L Accord. This procedure should be similar for 2008-2012 model 2.4L Accords and many other Honda models. The exact vehicle in the video is a 2012 Honda Accord Special Edition.
Some Honda models have a bolt to drain coolant from engine block, but many models do not, and the bolts usually require sealant or a new gasket if loosened/removed. The models with engine block drain bolts typically will drain about 1/3 gallon more coolant. There will still be be old coolant in the system no matter which setup the model has. I will typically do two drain and fills on the coolant system if I am concerned about getting all old coolant out (with a complete warm up and cool down period in between).
Loosening coolant drain block bolts on older vehicles that have never had them removed can sometimes lead to issues like leaks or stripped out bolts, so be mindful of that.
Honda coolant is long life, so if the vehicle has been properly maintained, one drain and fill from radiator every 60,000 miles or so is typically what I recommend.

95 Civic DX - 1.5L - I replaced my radiator (definitely needed it), cooling fan assembly, cap, and upper and lower rad hoses.
The work went well but it appeared I had air in the system. Coolant was getting pushed out of the rad and into the overflow. I shut the
car down, let it cool, topped it off, drove home then clicked on your link and bought the Spill Free funnel.
    It was very helpful.
I am still concerned that after 20 minutes I still had lots of bubbles but I will monitor things for a week or two.

I followed the video and changed the coolant in my 2014 CRV this afternoon and it works like a charm. Just heads up - do not remove the drain plug all the way out, or else some coolant will spill on the floor unless you have a huge pan.

  • @boomerguy9935

On my Accord, Element, Fit, Civc and HR-V cars which have radiator caps, I can leave the cap open on the coolant reservoir/overflow and the cap closed on the radiator, which allows the reservoir to be sucked empty while draining. Then you can remove the empty reservoir for washing/rinsing much easier.
The Lisle radiator fill kit comes with different caps to fit the radiator which allows the cooling system to "burp" itself during warm-up. Very easy to do!

Great vid, thank you. This was my first coolant change and I now have a lot more confidence. Got the same funnel system and squeezed top radiator hose before removing funnel also. Great tip. The coolant in my 2005 Honda LX was changed when car was cold, so I was able to touch lower radiator hose to verify when thermostat had opened up. Fans did not come on at this time, so the fans may not be only thing to use as indication of cooling cycle. It was also easy to watch the funnel from driver's seat and see bubbles start to rise up. During the second cooling cycle I saw the coolant level drop a bit in the funnel. Thanks again!

Good tip about the stubborn block plug. A wd-40 or similar overnight soak will protect against an stripping that aluminum block threaded hole. Patience is always key' in mechanics, dont get in a hurry and plan twice the time for the job until you get some experience.

I have used the Lisle spill free funnel for quite some time and it works fine. However, I also have that Astro pressure test kit but just recently started using the vacuum fill tool. It took me a time or two of using it to get the procedure just right but I have found it significantly faster to do the vacuum fill. I can do an Odyssey with the dual heater cores and get heat from both immediately and no need for the numerous hot/cold cycles on the HVAC that the service manual calls for. The trick to the vacuum fill is getting the pick up hose all the way down into a bucket of coolant, before attaching to the tool, to make sure there's no air in the hose. The nice thing is the coolant goes into those hard to burp areas of the cooling system. Remove the tool, top off the radiator, put the cap on, run it for two fan cycles, test for good heat from the heater core(s,) top the radiator again, and ship it.

Did this coolant service on a 2011 CR-V today. All went as planned except for a few hiccups that always happen no matter how straightforward the repair.
The petcock was at such an angle, I couldn't get a good grip with neither my fingers nor pliers. It took about 20 mins to get all the old coolant out.
Lastly...I could never get the fans to come on. I did the rpm hold. Even waited for 30 min. When I turned the A/C on...both fans came on but stopped when the A/C was turned off.
One thing.... shouldn't we have turned the heat on before draining as to drain the heater core? Great video dave...and the tip about squeezing the hose before removing the Lisle was awesome and worked.

I appreciate the comment, thank you! I did mention in the video to move climate control to hot, to open up heater core. This is only actually necessary on older Hondas with a control valve to the heater core, newer Hondas do not have this and so it makes no difference if the climate control is moved to heat or not. I do not turn blower on because that can turn on cooling fans.

I tried aftermarket approved power steering fluid "FOR HONDA OR ACURA" written on the bottles. The aftermarket fluid frothed in the reservoir and started making power steering pump noises soon after, not good. Changed to factory fluid for the right year of Honda Accord and no more frothing or noise.

But I was hesitant to do that because that bolt has never been turned and I'm worried it won't end well. Based on your expert advice, I think I'll just drain from the radiator only. Then fill the coolant following your instructions in the video. Then do another drain and fill in a week or so. Would that be ok?

I had the 2002 CR V coolant changed at the Dealer and we heard gurgling sounds for a long time until I think I realized there was air in the system. I saw an ad for a Subaru coolant flush and it was $189. Probably Honda has increased their price too.

Get that kit, I have owned one for awhile, they work and are much cheaper than going to the dealer. And they work on just about any car or truck.

Thanks Michael - I have the kit and have used it once on my 1998 Accord EX V6 and it was a big help. I need to take the time to do the 2002 CR V. I was surprised the Dealer didn’t get it right and left air in the system. Both Hondas are great cars after the junk I’d been driving and with proper maintenance and driving they just last and last.

Thank you for the video. After I did the flush and put the new coolant in, I let the car reach operating temperature and was running it at like 1,500-2000 rpm and the radiator fans didn’t turned on. Would that be a problem. If so what might the problem be? Thank you.

Great video. My cooling fans never came on. I know they work because ac turns them on. I noticed a lot of bubbles. They stopped and after 45 minutes I turned it off. I might need to replace thermostat?

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  2 года назад

It is possible to have a bad thermostat or bad Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor (or fan switch), but not always, sometimes it can be difficult to get the engine warm enough to turn on the fans, especially if it was only idling. Usually I will bring the RPMs up to about 2,500 for a bit which helps and usually gets the fans to turn on. A scan tool can help in situations like this by showing what temp the engine computer is seeing on ECT1 (with a cheap code reader) or both ECT1 and ECT2 (with a scan tool that can read Honda specific info).

On my Daihatsu Skywing (Taiwan version of a Charade) I have found it necessary to disable the cooling fan and let the coolant boil into the (ordinary) funnel. Potentially damaging, but I think not as risky. as running the car with air in it.
I use two funnels stacked since the special funnel shown probably isn't available in Taiwn. Just got an Accord but dont yet know if my stacked funnels will fit it.
